I recently found on Google Books the Acts of the General Assembly of the State of Georgia from 1837 in which Charles Austin Saxon's name was changed to Charles Austin Strawn and he was legitimized as the son of Hiram Strawn, his reputed father on 23 Dec 1837. Does anyone knoew anything more about this?

Saxon family birthmark

I would like to know the history of the Saxon Family birthmark. A white birthmark on the hairline (Hair comes in a white patch) one on the stomach, and one on the leg. I read it once, and how that birthmark was traced back to someone in the 1800s, but I no longer have it. If anyone has this info I sure would like it again. I know my son has the birthmark, so does his father and his grandfather.

I am looking for the family information you mentioned regarding James Franklin and Rowena Jane Stone. I have been going through the census reports and get a little lost. We come through Myrtle Saxon (b. 1900 - d. 1968)and who is the twin to Maggie (d. 1992). Could share anything going further back on those lines? Thank you for your help. You can e-mail us directly, (Lisa_Tim_Barker@yahoo.com) or through here. Thanks so much!

SAXON in Madison Co., AL 1811-1817

I would like to know more about Samuel SAXON who died testate in Madison Co. between Mar and Oct 1817. His will mentions his wife Marina, his son James Henry (to receive major part of estate) and son Benjamin Thomas (to receive one half of proceeds from SC property).

John and Samuel SAXON purchased the NE and NW quarters, respectively, of Sec. 33, Township 2, Range 1E in Jan 1811.

Benjamin T. SAXON got land in Sections 20, 21, and 28 in Township 2, Range 1W in 1815 and 1818 (approx. six miles west of John & Samuel's land, above).

One James H. SAXON, a Mason, was among those who petitioned the Masonic Grand Lodge of Alabama on 1 Dec 1826 for the constitution of a new lodge in "Dale Town" in Wilcox County, to be called the Lafayette Lodge (#25).

On the lodge's membership report for the year ending 9 November 1828, Thomas B. CREAGH appears as this Lodge's Worshipful Master, James H. SAXON as its Senior Warden, and Eli TERRY as a member.

James H. SAXON (born 1790-1800) appears in the 1830 census of neighboring Marengo Co., with apparent wife, two sons, and two daughters.

Marengo Co., AL Deed Book C, page 389, records a sale from Thomas B. CREAGH of Marengo Co. to James H. SAXON of Greene Co.: the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 29, Township 16, Range 4 (on 1 June 1835).

He may have moved into Mobile Co., where a James H. SAXON is recorded in 1837, and then into MS.

Rankin County, Mississippi, Recorded Land Transactions
Vol. 5 1839-40 Family History Center film #0872415:
Page 482, Benjamin B. Smith to James H. Saxon, 16 Nov 1838 - to form a partnership under the firm Style of Saxon and Smith for the purpose of establishing and carrying on a drug and apothecary store in the town of Brandon.

Whether the above are all the same James H (Henry?) SAXON is a question I would like to answer.

One Benjamin Thomas SAXON died in Abbeville, SC in 1832
(will dated 19 Jan 1832, proved 16 Apr 1832); wife Matilda W. SAXON; neighbor Benjamin H. SAXON to be guardian of children (including Sarah M. J. SAXON); sale on 21 April 1832, buyers included B. H. SAXON, Sophia SAXON, B. M. SAXON, et al.

Other Abbeville, SC records may relate to the above:
South Carolina Marriages, 1800-1820 (Ancestry.com database):
Duke BEALL & Martha SAXON 27 June 1811 (by Moses WADDEL)

http://rosewoodrecording.com/Genealogy/Equity10.05.html
Name of complainer. Name of complained against. Box number, pack number, year. Type of document. Abstract of contents:
Saxon, B.H. et al; Prather, Jas W 27 736 1830 Saxton, gdn of Mary A., Sarah, Martha C. Beall

Ben Saxon, Sam, Benj. Thomas Saxon 1814: gdn Sarah and Mary Beall, children of Duke Beall. [Is this Benjamin Harper SAXON, Samuel SAXON of Madison Co., AL, and Sam's son Benjamin Thomas, before Sam's removal to AL?]

Another Benjamin Thomas SAXON died in Newberry, SC in 1842, according to this obituary:
COLUMBIA NEWSPAPERS: SOUTH-CAROLINA TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE: "Died at the residence of Chancellor Johnson, in Newberry, of pulmonary consumption, on the morning of the 7th of April 1842, Benjamin Thomas Saxon, Esq. a member of the bar, and late Commissioner in Equity, for Lexington District, uniting himself to the Presbyterian Church. He was born in Madison county, Alabama, the 22d of February 1819."

This obviously cannot be Samuel SAXON's son Benjamin Thomas, as this Newberry gentleman was not born until two years after Samuel's will was written--but surely he was closely related, to have been born in Madison Co., AL!

Any additional information about any of the above will be gratefully received.

Ron Head (Montgomery, AL)
r o n h e a d @ k n o l o g y . n e t

Just because someone has posted these "facts" on the internet does not mean that any evidence exists to support his or her claims. If there is any evidence to indicate that either Samuel SAXON or his wife was born in England, I've never found it in forty years of searching. Samuel's wife when he died was Mary, but not Mary YANCEY. (It is likely that his first wife was a YANCEY, but we have nothing to indicate her given name.) The wife who survived him was born Mary BROWN, a daughter of Richard BROWN who died testate in Brunswick Co., VA in 1773-1774. She married several more times after Samuel SAXON's death, and was closely associated with her stepson, Benajah SAXON.

More on the Saxon's of East Texas

Hello Ms. Peavy! Glad to find another cousin! Yes, Jack Saxon is pretty much a brick wall. The "family talk" is about all we have on he and Martha. I do have some information from Pauline Young, also a descendant of Jack, that was sent to a Mr. Hollingsworth. A descendant of Hugh Robert Saxon actually went to the library in Pascagoula, MS and searched in Mr. Hollingsworth's records. I have posted a comment on Jack's profile that includes that information in my family tree. Here is the link to that comment: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/Comments.aspx?tid=951168&pi... You may contact me directly at rpsaxon@yahoo.com. Looking forward to talking with you if you like. Thanks and good luck! Bob Saxon

John Jackson Saxon and Martha Ophelia Shirley Saxon were my great great grandparents. John Jackson Saxon born 14 Nov 1833 in South Carolina. Martha Ophelia Shirley Saxon born 30 Dec 1826 and died 30 October 1896. She is buried in Morgan county, Georgia. He is buried in Greenwood, SC. Their daughter Martha Ophelia Saxon Shockley is my great grandmother. Am trying to find out information on John Jackson Saxon and his wife Martha Ophelia Shirley Saxon. It is my understanding that he was illegitimate and his mother was Betsy Burns (possibly a Saxon and married the Burns after having John Jackson - this is "family talk", though, and not fact). If you have any information, would love to ahve it. Thank you! S. Peavy

Sadie's was a sister to my Grandmother,Lona (Saxon) McCoy. My grandfather,Irven E. McCoy had a brother named Willie.
Hi Mark--
I read with interest your post on the SAXON surname message board, in which you said:

**********************
James and Mollie (Davis) Saxon resided in Wayne County, Mississippi in the early 1900's and had four children, Ella, Earl a/k/a Early, Alex and Edwin. I need some help so that I can continue my family tree of relating to these four children and their decendents. Alex was somewhere in Louisiana in the 1960's and would have been in his early 60's at that time. Last accounts Earl was in Washington State in the 1960's and would have been in his 60's around that time too. I have no idea of the whereabouts of Ella or Edwin. I would appreciate any information cocnering these folks.
**********************

I've been gathering information on the SAXON families in the Southeast since around 1969, when I married a SAXON descendant (my wife's great-grandmother was a SAXON from Laurens Co., SC).

I don't think I can offer much help tracking these four siblings and/or their descendants, although I think this might be Earl in 1930:

1930 Walworth Co., South Dakota
Enum. SAXON 42 SC
Margarett 18 MS
Harrison 16 MS
Mary 13 MS
Catharine 04 MS

James SAXON (assuming that this is indeed the same James who later fathered Ella, Early, Alex, and Edwin) was living in 1880 Clarke Co., MS with his mother Nancy, who was born ca 1859 in MS (marked single, but possibly widowed?), in the household of John W. MENASCO and his wife Margaret F. (BRUCE). Nancy is marked as John MENASCO's "sister-in-law," which may or may not be correct--but I haven't worked that out.

[John A. Wesley MENASCO was a son of Matilda Caroline Rogers (SAXON) MENASCO, and a grandson of John SAXON and wife Mary (WALLIS) of SC, Mobile Co., AL, and Clarke Co., MS.]

Living nearby in 1880 were Thomas Jackson SAXON (b. ca 1843) and his wife Mary Matilda (MENASCO) and their children. [Thomas was a son of Alexander SAXON and his wife Nancy (WALLIS), siblings of John SAXON and wife Mary (WALLIS) mentioned in the paragraph above.] Mary Matilda MENASCO was a da. of Matilda Caroline Rogers (SAXON) MENASCO, and a sister of John A. Wesley MENASCO, with whom James and his mother Nancy were living.

Next door to Thomas Jackson SAXON and wife Mary Matilda (MENASCO) in 1880 appeared Harrison SAXON (incorrectly listed as Saxon HARRISON) and his family. Harrison was a son of Pressly (or Preston) Henderson SAXON, and grandson of John and Mary (WALLIS) SAXON. Harrison's wife was Nancy Jemima "Toash" MENASCO, sister of John A. Wesley MENASCO and Mary Matilda MENASCO, and like them and her husband, a grandchild of John and Mary (WALLIS) SAXON.

[Note that Pressley/Preston Henderson SAXON and Matilda Caroline Rogers (SAXON) MENASCO had a brother named Alsberry Newton SAXON--and that "your" James's full name was James Newton SAXON.]

My mind is now boggled--as I'm sure yours is--and all these SAXON's, MENASCO's, and WALLIS's are beginning to run together. I am quite certain that "your" James and his mother Nancy are part of this family, but I haven't quite been able to figure out how they fit in. Perhaps you can take a look at all this and offer some suggestions, or (even better!), perhaps you already know the details and can enlighten me!
I'm not sure why that was confusing. I said:

********************************************
On the same census page with Grant & Mattie GILL in 1900 appears this household:

W. B? SAXON (born ca 1815 TN) and wife Nancy (born ca 1816 TN).

IF John SAXON was indeed Mattie (SAXON) GILL's father, and IF he is the John W. SAXON (age 1) in 1850 Wayne Co., TN, then John M. SAXON and wife Nancy were John W. SAXON's parents, and Mattie (SAXON) GILL's grandparents. Of course these relationships must be proved by additional evidence.

I am not, to my knowledge, related to any of these people, but I have been researching the SAXON families of the Southeast for almost forty years.
Mattie's husband was surely Ulysses S. Grant Gill, born in August 1868 in Ohio (both parents born in OH as well).

Grant and Mattie GILL appear in the 1900 census of North Choctaw, Lincoln Co., OK. They apparently married around 1896, and their sons were born in 1896 and 1897.

On the same census page with Grant & Mattie GILL in 1900 appears this household:

W.
Hi Cheryl

I noticed your message and that your Saxon descendants came to Georgia and Alabama. I am tracing my Saxon family from Manchester, England. Some went to Australia (Thomas Saxon married a Ruth Boxall and settled there). Some went to America and settled in Georgia and Alabama. It all starts with a James Saxon (b. 1786 in Manchester) who married a Hanna (b. 1786). They had a Jonathan (b. 1812), a James (b. 1813) and a William (b. 1815). William Saxon married a Malinda Moore and this is where the Georgia / Alabama dynasty begins.

My link is via Louisa Saxon who was sister of Thomas (who emigrated to Australia). Louisa stayed put in Manchester and married a Thomas Henry Price. She was my gg grandma.

I'd be interested if you have any links with the William and Malinda (could be Melinda) family.

Matthew Baines
London

I might have a link somewhere - I am currently researching the Saxon family of Manchester. James and Hannah Saxon (b1786) had a Jonathan Saxon in 1812 living in Hulme. Jonathan married Eliza Tristram and had Thomas, Louisa, John and Henry in the 1840s. I am related to Louisa (she married Thomas Price) who was my great, great grandmother.

Thomas Saxon Sr is my great Grandfather who was born abt 1870 and died in 1962. I believe he was married twice, both times to a lady named Anna. Thomas had at least 13 children, to include my grandfather Michael Saxon Sr. (1902-1967). I have a newspaper article from around 1950 that pictures four generations of Thomas Saxon ( Thomas Saxon Sr through Thomas Saxon IV). Thanks

Hi Doris!
I just began researching the Saxon name today. Addie Saxon was my husband's grandmother. She was born approx. 1911 and died in 1997 or 1998. She has two sisters that I know of, but I'm pretty sure she had one or two more. The ones that I know of are Annie Bell and Middie (or Mitty). Addie married Andrew Smith. He was killed when hit by a car while riding a bicycle when he was approx. 45 years old. They had children Fred, Bob, Mary Ellen, Marian and Tom. Marian is my mother-in-law. She was born in Greenwood, S.C. and spent most of her childhood there. After the children were grown, Addie married Harold Nobles. They moved to Atlanta. Then they moved back to Honea Path, S.C. They are both now deceased.

I also work with a man named Charles David Adair. He's a radio personality here in Columbia, S.C. He is from Laurens, S.C. and has MANY family members there. He says his sister has extensive info on the Adairs, but I was wondering what you have on the connection between the Saxons and the Adairs.

THANKS!
-Dana Risinger
trisinger@sc.rr.com

If you are going to treat people that way, why reply in the first place. I was confused because of two johns, but after I looked up the census by myself I seen what you were talking about, Thanks very much... by the way there were two Johns and then a Nancy and then John's wife may have started with an N also on what I found.

Hi John, Thanks for your reply, but I think we have two different families. Our James Saxon was married to Sarah nee Commer. He was a pilot - shipping we think, given the year. We are assuming he was born abt. 1833, allowing for the average age of men marrying at 25 yrs age. We have found no trace of them on any census or on any list of registered pilot for the time.
George was their son - our Great grandfather - b. ?/?/1858 in Whitatable, Kent England. d. 13/10/1916 in Rongahere. Otago, New Zealand. m. 11/01/1883 to Ella Halliday, at Cromwell, Otago, New Zealand.
Cromwell at this time was a very busy place as it was a big goldmining area at that time. We did find in the archives a George and John - brothers we assumed - who travelled to Port Chalmers but the dtaes were wrong for our George we thought so I'm afraid we didn't note the date or ship. Sorry. Hope this is of help. Regards Robyn.

Two sons were living with America's sister Quimby family in Jones Co, Ms. I have nothing else on America until my GF's obit in 1952.
