A VETERAN NEGRO FIREMAN DIES.
Jack SAYER, also known as "Black Jack," a negro who
had been a member of the Kansas City Fire Department
since 1891, died yesterday afternoon. He was 45 years
old. He served actively until last October, when he was
pensioned because of ill health.
For twenty years he had a record of never missing a fire
to which his company, No. 11, was called. For several
years before he was retired he was a lieutenant and at
one time refused the rank of captain.
