OBITUARY: Elizabeth Jane (Brewer) Sayles.

Newspaper: Akron ''Register-Tribune.'' [Plymouth County, Iowa].
Publication Date: Thursday, February 18, 1909. (Volume 22. Number 27).

Obituary of:
ELIZABETH JANE (BREWER) SAYLES.

SAYLES -- At her home in Akron, Iowa, Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 1909, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Sayles, aged 71 years and 12 days, of pneumonia.

While she had been in poor health for a long time, the last illness of Grandma Sayles, as she was affectionately called, was of only a few days duration, the end being hastened by advanced age and incident infirmities.

Elizabeth Jane Brewer was born in LaPorte County, Indiana, February 05, 1838, where she passed her girlhood days. She married Jonas Sayles at Rolling Prairie, Indiana, April 18, 1861. They came to Union County, South Dakota in 1882, buying a farm five miles southwest of here. There they resided until the death of her husband, April 30, 1892. Since that time she has made her home in Akron, [Iowa]. Well and faithfully did she perform the duties of life in the long span of years allotted her, and sweet and lasting will be the memories of her goodness by those near and dear to her. She is survived by one son, Elmer M. Sayles, a prominent attorney at Primghar, Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. H.F. Hansen [Lula / Lulu May Sayles], north of this city; also a sister, Mrs. Ellen Couchman, of Lyons, Nebraska, all of whom were present during her last illness. The community extends its sympathy in their bereavement.

The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday), at 1:00 p.m. in the M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church, Rev. J.L. Ayrault conducting the service. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery [Akron, Plymouth County, Iowa], beside her husband.

[end]

.

OBITUARY: Sherman Sayles (1891-1929).
Newspaper: Akron "Register-Tribune." Plymouth Co., Iowa.
Publication Date: February, 1929.

OBITUARY OF SHERMAN SAYLES

"John Sherman, youngest son of William and Albina [Sargeant] Sayles, was born in Union County, South Dakota, on the farm homesteaded of his parents, August 9, 1891, and passed away at the same farm home February 5, 1929, of pneumonia, having reached the age of 37 years, 5 months and 27 days.

Sherman completed the public school course in Union County, South Dakota, and attended the State college at Brookings, S.D. On June 24, 1912, he was united in marriage with Bertha Agnes Blanchard, of Richland, South Dakota. Two sons, Vernon Sargeant Sayles and Glenn Sherman Sayles, came to brighten this home, who, with the widow, survive to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and kind, loving father. With the exception of about two years spent at Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Denver, Colorado, for the benefit of his health, he has spent his entire life at the old homestead. He served for a number of years as clerk of the home school, which position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of Elk Point Lodge, No. 3, A.F. & A.M., of Elk Point, South Dakota. During his twelve days' illness, to relatives and attendants about his bedside his welcoming smile and cheerful greeting never failed. He leaves to mourn his going, besides his wife and two sons, one brother, Frank, of Union County, S.D.; and two sisters, Mrs. Lottie [Sayles] Maynard, of Union County, and Miss Hattie Sayles, of Akron, Iowa, together with other relatives. His sterling character and genial disposition won for him a host of friends, who keenly feel their loss.

After a brief service at the farm home, the body was brought to Akron, [Plymouth County, Iowa], Thursday afternoon, where the funeral was held in the Methodist church, conducted by Jno. Oakley, of Elk Point, S.D., and Wilson Gow, pastor of the church. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. The Masonic order had charge of the burial service. A quartet composed of Mrs. Ruth Swift, Mrs. Clara Stoutenburg, Wm. Thorne, and Dr. G.H. Wooton rendered appropriate music. The pallbearers were selected from among Mrs. Sayles neighbors and were as follows: Fred Husted, Hiram Holm, Dalton Bellwood, Vinton Adams, Andrew Tillotson and Wayne Austin. The large conjuration filled the main auditorium of the church and the League room to the east. The floral decorations were quite profuse and a deep sorrow pervaded the entire gathering.

Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Miss Viola Maynard, of Alpena, S.D.; Miss Bessie Huckert, of Seward, Nebraska; Mrs. L.C. Wold and two children and Mrs. Edwin Fennel, of Omaha, Nebraska.

[end]

------------

CARD OF THANKS:
To all those who assisted in any way during the illness and after the death of our beloved husband, father, and brother, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks -- Mrs. Sherman Sayles and Sons, Frank Sayles, Mrs. Lottie [Sayles] Maynard, Miss Hattie Sayles.''

[end]

I am related to the Oakland Twp, Brant Co. Sayles Family through William A. Sayles b. 1862 Oakland twp, Brant, Ontario. His parents were John and Elizabeth Sayles. Their marriage (Brock District) was witnessed in 1850 by Charles Sayles, and Charles Sayles Jr. The 1851 Ontario Census shows them living in the same houeshold as Charles and Mileson Sayles with their son Stephen (age 1). From the IGI,I beleve Charles is the son of Mordecai Sayles b. RI-->NY-->ONT.I am trying to confirm this John, Charles, and Mordecai family link. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oneida County 1830 census lists Catharine Sayles and Artemus Sayles both living in New Hartford. Stukely was living with son Artemus in 1840. Catharine (born Oneida County) is listed on 1865 census (Jefferson County, Town of Theresa) as living with son Ezra ( born 9 Dec 1812 Oneida County; died 17 May 1893 Jefferson County). Since only heads of households are listed on 1830 census, I assume Ezra's father was dead by then. Looking for Ezra's father, hopefully son of Stukely, since New Hartford is small and only Artemus and Catharine are listed on 1830 census. They have to be related. Right???

In the bible written under family records is “John Sayles Jr. married to Margaret Knight at Mexico [NY] Sept. 13, 1832.”

I descend from Rachel Sayles, John Sayles's sister. She married Jacob Osterhout. I would like to exchange information

I think Cuyahoga County Ohio is where Cleveland is located . I live about 2 1/2 hours from there near NY/Penn Border and go through Erie PA to get to Cleveland Ohio. Records were poor in 1800 in most states, not only Ohio. I'm 20 min south of Buffalo, NY. I'm not related to Sayles but was doing a little research for a friend doing a book on a Train disaster that happened near Angola NY and Big Sister Creek Dec 18, 1867 where there were about 100 injured and 50 killed. The Sales girls were on that train and were burned and had broken bones but lived. I was looking for a little background info on the family.

Kevin
Angola, NY

I am the granddaughter of Zenith Pearl Sayles Casteel. I believe that she was born in either Illinois, or Indiana, sometime around 1894. Besides my Mother, Lula May Sayles Casteel, children of Zenith Pearl Sayles that I remember are, Johnnie Casteel, Arnold Casteel, Amos Casteel, Richard Casteel, Lydia Sayles or Casteel. There was a Blanche, but I believe she was Lydia's daughter. Does anyone know of this Sayles line, or have any information? Thanks so much.

The only question I have is, we have always know my Grandfathers name to be William JOSEPH Casteel, instead of William JACKSON Casteel. My Father was Wilbur William Casteel, and my Mother was Lula May Sayles Casteel. William JOSEPH OR JACKSON adopted her when he married her Mother, Zenith Sayles. May I ask, how you are related to the Casteel/Sayles line? Again, thanks so much.

Marcelle (Casteel) Chambers

They are not mine unless
However, I do have a Thomas was an uncle. He would have been the right age. There is one interesting point. Josiah's grandson moved to Buffalo circa 1930. There I no good reason for him to go there from Montanna. What is usually the case is some relitive/friend lives in an area an finds work for them before they come out. There is also another upstate Josiah Sales a decade or so younger than mine. I do know many persons kept in better touch with their relitives than we do now. They did not have much to do after night fall. Keeping in touch with distant relitives was one way to aquire trust-worthy news. I saw a letter written by my g-grandfather to a very distant relitive. He had added some silly but well done cartoons to his letter making too expensive for me. This was to a second cousin once removed. He sent local news about crops and prices and asked for the same. Maybe they would exploite a local price if any were too high or too low that they spend a week in transite to make some money.

Much of what I thought I knew at the time of that last email I have had to reconcider. This still holds true.
Josiah W. SAYLES was born in OH circa 1831. His parents were both from the Isle.
He was married for the second time 10/17/1864 Cuyahoga Co. OH. This is on the NY border. I suspect he may have been born there since persons rarely moved east. He may have paid to have a Watkins woman buried in the area he was married after he left town. I guess it was his sister. This is a second clue that he had been in the area for some time. Public records are very poor for OH in the early 1800s.

So, I found this run down Cemetery on the road from Howard, NY to Hornell, NY. I was looking for a gravestone and decided to take pictures of all that was there, being that there were only a handful. Email me, and I will send directions to the Cemetery, if it would be helpful.

Stephen Sayles
Died
Jan. 28, 1872
Aged
83 years, 2 months
