Hi, My father's name was Robert Saylor and he was posted to Shropshire in the 1940s. He may not be aware of my existence. He was dating my mother May Howell. She was sent away when her mother discovered she was pregnant. I was born 29 April 1945. I would be delighted if it was possible to discover my family in the US! I have done research and find that the first Robert Saylor went to the US in the 17th Century from Yorkshire!

Gelanie (Gelane) Saylor/Dave Hall

Gelane Saylor was my great grandmother. One of the three men to whom she was married was Dave Hall, my great-grandfather. I have visited her gravesite in Harlan County, Kentucky, and took a photo of her tombstone. On the tombstone, her name is spelled Gelane, with no "i" though my Mom says it was pronounced Gelanie. At times, Gelane helped her son Grant (one of Dave's sons) raise his children--my mother and her siblings, as Mom's mother died during childbirth while Mom and her surviving siblings were quite young.

Gelane/Gelanie must have been quite a woman, raising her own children from three marriages and then helping with grandchildren.

In fact, I have always loved the name so much that I named my daughter Gelanie (I did insert an "i" to make the name easier to pronounce). My understanding is that Gelane is a Cherokee name, meaning winter dawn. Does anyone have any information to verify its origin or whether or not she had Cherokee heritage?

Joseph Solomon Saylor Sarah Salyer and Hannah

Can anyone clear up the marriages of Joseph Solomon Saylor (b. 1760, NC)? I have found birth indexes on a few of his children and some list Sarah Salyer as mother and others Hannah LNU. I've also found birth indexes that have both mother's names. For example, Lucy Saylor has two birth indexes on ancestry.com (family data collection database) that are identical except one has her mother as Hannah the other as Sarah Salyer. Is Hannah just a phantom of someone's incorrect transcription or is there actually a Hannah that was married to Joseph Solomon Saylor? I've seen many public trees that have both/either/or and most with various children being assigned to each. Any help would be appreciated as I don't want to continue to propetuate incorrect information.
Thanks,
Linda

SAYLOR DNA Project

I have established a SAYLOR DNA project at FamilyTreeDNA.
Participation in the project provides a testing discount.

The PRIMARY purpose is to validate a connection between the early Pennsylvania SAYLOR/SAYLER/SEILER families as suggested by the research of Richard Warren Davis. If validated through DNA testing this would connect the large families researched of Samuel J. Saylor (central PA) and Dr. E. C. Saylor (western PA).

The SECONDARY purpose is to bring together other SAYLOR/SAYLER/SEILER families and to complement the genealogical paper trail.

Testing is simple – requiring only a cotton swab of saliva from the mouth. Because the Y-chromosome DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged for hundreds of generations, the testing will focus on males with the SAYLOR/SAYLER/SEILER surname. Interested females are not excluded; but, must have a brother, father or male cousin submit a test.

You will find additional information on the following web page:
www.ecsaylor.org/dna_project.htm

Stewart R.
I would like to know more about the Saylor family that came to St Louis abt. 1899. Frank E. Saylor died in 1930 and was buried at Evangelical Zion cemetery. I cannot find a transcription for his stone. He had a brother named Claude Chester Saylor who died in 1966,buried at Oakwood cemetery. A third brother changed his name to Sylvester Lewis, and died in St Louis 1833, and was buried at Oakwood.
I have not been able to find obits, or tombstone transcriptions for any of them. If there is a family member with info, I'd love to hear from you!

James SAYLOR, born ca. 1828, Penn to Ohio before 1854

James SAYLOR was born in Pennsylvania in about 1826-1828 and married Hester Ann Kitsmiller in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio in 1854. He was a carpenter and served as a drummer during the Civil War. He later moved to Nelsonville, Ohio where he died in 1872 of injuries he received at the Battle of Island No. 10. These facts are certain, but I cannot find any information about James prior to his marriage. I have, however, found two people by that name and of the correct age in the 1850 censuses of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

There is a James Saylor in Meigs County, Ohio, aged 22 with a wife named Ruth.

There is another James Saylor in the 1850 census of Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, aged 20. He was a carpenter, living with his mother, Sophia, and had two sisters, Mary and Ellen.

Are either of these latter James Saylors the same person as my James who married Hester Ann Kitsmiller?

My ancestor Peter Dodd had a daughter named Cinderella, she married a Saylor. In 1901 his son Hugh was interviewed for a "Biographical History of Nodaway & Atchison Counties, Missouri". In his interview he mentions . . . "Cinderella who married Matthis Saylor and is now deceased . . .". Hugh died childless in 1913. The estate passed to his wife Mary and siblings. Cinderella's share went to the following:
"Lyman Saylor, son . . . Harland Saylor, son . . . Mable Gill, only child of Eliza Ann Saylor Hall, daughter . . . Leslie Dunten . . .
I have a handsome platinum print picture postcard of a pretty little girl identified as Helen Saylor, taken, I estimate, in the early part of the 20th century, perhaps before 1920. She is about three, with big eyes and blond hair. There is no information on location. The postcard was not used. Please contact me if you have an interest.

John Robert Saylor (1908-1988)

My uncle by marriage was John Robert Saylor, born Nebraska (per the 1930 census) on 15 November 1908 and died 9 November, 1988 in Dallas, Texas.

In 1930, John was living with his uncle, Harry E. Biedinger, in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. This may mean that John's mother was a Biedinger. I've run through the census records and have found Harry's ex-wife and children, but no clue as to Uncle John's parents.

Uncle John never had any children but was married to my Aunt Lillie (Nichols) for many, many years. I would like to complete my records on him and wish I'd gotten his parents' names from him before he died.

If anyone out there knows anything about Uncle John's parentage, I would certainly appreciate your sharing the information.
