Re: SAYRE, NY>PA>MI, 1804 - 1940

It is hard for me to say if there is, or isn’t, a connection as I have failed to prove who the parents of my 3rd great grandfather, Nathan Sayre, were. I suspect his parents may have been Sarah and Nathan Sayre but I have no supporting documentation to prove my theory. My ancestor, Nathan, was born in Orange County in 1804. I know his mother died in 1807. From there he and his father relocated to Steuben County. His father died 1819. From there my orphaned 3rd great grandfather was bound out and learned the tanning trade. He was married in Elmira, Chemung County, New York on February 11, 1830. My Nathan Sayre is a mystery, I have no proof who his parents were or if he had siblings. It is my hope that someone has him in their records and can help me prove a connection. It is very possible, if not probable, that the Sayre (s) of Orange County all held some connection to one another. Your Jonathon Sayer/Sayre could very well be my Nathan’s brother, uncle, cousin or some other family relation. My problem comes in the proving. I am stuck and need to stumble on to that one elusive relative that holds the answers…and may not even know it. If you have suggestions, tips or ideas that might prove useful please let me know. I am more than happy to share information with distant kin…especially if it helps prove lineage.

I hope to hear from you again.

Lyn
Israel Sayre and David W Sayre

My great uncle Thomas Sayre made a family tree back in the '40s that has some background missing.
I'm trying to fill in the background for Israel Sayre born 1826/died 1865, married to Elizabeth Reed. They lived in Lawrence Cty, OH.
My uncle also has Israel's brother listed as Wilson Sayre with a note as to his daughters' names and that they moved to Garnett, KS in 1885. I can find information on David W. Sayre and wonder if his middle name is Wilson?
Uncle Tommy has Israel's and Wilson's father listed as Daniel Sayre, lived, died and was buried at Barnesville, OH. I'm not sure if this is accurate.
I'd be happy to share what I have here.
Thanks,
Diane

[Found in NYTimes.com]
JUDSON S. SAYRE
Published: May 12, 1986
Judson S. Sayre, founder and president of Bendix Home Appliances Inc., manufacturer of the Bendix washing machine, died Tuesday at the Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach, Fla. He was 87 years old. Mr. Sayre, who started his career as a salesman, introduced the Bendix ''automatic home laundry'' to this country and achieved the ultimate in sales promotion, the identification of the trade name with the product.

It also made a large personal fortune for Mr. Sayre. The South Bend, Ind., company was bought by the Avco Manufacturing Corporation in 1951 and in 1954, Mr. Sayre became president of the Norge division of the Borg-Warner Corporation of Chicago. He retired in 1964.

He was born in Richmond Township, Pa., graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1920 and received a master's degree in business administration from Columbia University in 1923.

Mr. Sayre, who lived in Bal Harbour, Fla., is survived by two daughters, Jean Kane of Williamsburg, Va., and Nancy Foerster of Newport Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
I appear to have also descended from Archibald Smith Sayre through his son William K. Sayre, according to recent DNA testing with one of his great-great-grandsons.

My research has found that William, b. abt. 1866 in New Mexico, died October 23, 1907 in Phoenix from injuries sustained in a mining accident near Wendendale (now Wenden), Arizona. I have found two newspaper accounts detailing the incident and his death certificate.

After reviewing the stories and USGS Topo maps of the Harcuvar Mountains, I believe William and his co-worker were working in the Golden Treasure Mine, located 33.917 degrees north (lat), 113.678 degrees west (lon), due west of Harcuvar Peak and on the north side of that range, accessed through the Cottonwood Pass.

It is my belief that he and my great-grandmother were, though never married to each other, the parents of my grandfather born February 1906.

I'm happy to forward all research.

Regards,

Gregory Morley
greg.morley@comcast.net
Calli Fern Sayre b/Sep 1880 Missouri? parents b/Virginia?

We need any information we can get about Calli and her family as well as ancestors and would enjoy contact with relatives.

Callie's parents are unknown to the family, her mother was allegedly of American Indian descent. In Callie's 1900 and 1920 census they are both shown born in Virginia. In the 1910 census father is born in West Virginia and mother born in Iowa. We do not know if Callie had siblings.

Callie's story starts in 1880 as her family reportedly traveled through Missouri on their way to California. Family history says, "she was born in a wagon train on the way to California and that's where she got her name." Apparently the family stayed in MO or they left her there.

In 1898 Callie married Ralph Hinson, a zinc miner, b/1859 IL. They possibly married in MO as they are in the 1900 Galena, Jasper, MO census. Ralph and Callie had a son Carl b/Apr 1898 Missouri; abt 1902 they had son Pearl C. born Oklahoma; John Q. was born abt 1906 in Oklahoma; and James P. was b/1909-1910 Missouri. I wonder why she was in MO for his birth?

In the 1910 Census for Jackson Township, Washington, Oklahoma, Calli has lost two children showing a total of 6 children 4 living - the four children mentioned above. Her husband Ralph is a laborer in oil supply.

Son Carter is b/abt 1911 in Missouri [another one born back in MO] and they finally have a daughter Bessie b/abt 1912 Oklahoma [our line.] In 1920 they are in Bartlesville, Washington, Oklahoma. Only Pearl, John, Carter and Bessie are with their parents. Ralph is a laborer at odd jobs.

It's possible the Ralph Hinson family was in Levenworth County, Kansas in 1930 but I haven't seen that census image yet.

Callie Fern died 1954 in Barlesville, Washington, OK.

Daughter Bessie married Emery Wilburn Harkrader b/1909 Kansas and they had cildren born in Oklahoma and Kansas. Bessie died 1980 in Taylor County, Texas

Thanks for taking the time to read, perhaps this will help me link up with others researching this branch and hopefully help someone else who may be researching these people.

CW

There are several branches of the name, descendants in four and five generations, living in Meigs county. Daniel Sayre, father of Moses E. Sayre and great-grandfather of the Hon.
Memorial Dedication Ceremony

There will be a grave marking ceremony for Reuel Sayre, a Revolutionary War soldier, on Saturday, August 5th, at 2:00 PM in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Perry County, Ohio. The SAR and DAR will participate. It should be a colorful and impressive event. I'm sure the cemetery will be open to anyone interested in attending. Reuel Sayre's children married into the Bennett, Cooper, Hull, Knoffsinger, and Lloyd families. There are many more descendants of these families. The cemetery is located about 3 miles northeast of Somerset near the intersection of Ohio Route 22 and Township Road 46. You might plan extra time to look around the cemetery. I've discovered old graves there that aren't in any published list.
help finding Belle (aka Isabelle?) Sayre/Sayers Byron, b abt 1840's
Has anyone run across information on a Byron-Sayers family. They had supposedly lived in FL.
Byron father, William?, (b. abt 1840, ,Scotland?) may have been in civil war? He abondoned family.
Byron mother (maiden name Belle Sayers (spelling?) of PA?) later abondoned the 2 children. She may have lived in Northern WI in her latter years, Children ended up in Devils Lake ND on a farm, with a family by the name of Moore.
That abandoned son William, b 1-15-1866, moved to MN as a young adult. He married Catherine Frances Murphy, b. 1872 MN, who then lived in ND, Her parents were John, b 1854, Ireland and Sarah McHenry Murphy, b 10-1859, Canada. They died in MN, and other children included Rose, Celia, Sada, John, James, Frances, Clarence, Fred, Henry and William, all born ND, MN or WI....except Rose who was born in OH?
Abandoned sister Odelia, b. abt 1867 (m. C Sommers) moved to state of WA. Children included Allan, Genevive and Wilfred, b WI and ND.
I have been unable to find anything about John and Sarah McHenry Murphy and little about their children....siblings to Catherine.
I have also been unable to find anything about parents of William and Odelia Byron, William? and Belle/Isabelle Sayers/Sayre Byron, or family of Odelia Byron Sommers.
Ralph, do you have any information on a Isaac Sayre m. Margaret Powell? I know Margaret was born in 1857, and they had at least one daughter Nancy C., born 25 Jan, 1878, Lebanon Twp., Meigs Co., Ohio. I am descended from Margaret's sister, Hulda, who passed on a gene for retinitis pigmentosa (causing vision problems/blindness).If Margaret had the same gene, she could have passed this on to sons, and grandsons through her daughters ( females carry gene, but males express illness).I know Hulda and Margaret were the daughters of William Powell and Nancy Porter, and that these parents divorced. William had more children in a second marriage. Any information you have would be great! Carol Carlson

Hall-Sayre Connection

I am looking for a Hall - Sayre connection. My ggreatgrandfather was Moses Sayre Hall born in Ohio in 1819. His father was Aaron Bigelow Hall according to a death certificate. I am wondering where the Sayre name comes in. Most people were named after relatives. Also the Bigelow name connection. Aaron had three sons that I am aware of:
James, Aaron and Moses and two daughters, Sarah and Caroline. I just can't find the father of Aaron Hall Sr. The three sons were born in Ohio probably Scioto, Nile, Ohio since I found them there in the 1840, 1850 census'. Aaron Hall Sr died in 1845. He had two wifes: Margaret Edison who is the mother of James, Aaron, Moses, Sarah and Caroline. The second wife was Harriet McKinney. They had 5 children: William, Hester, Margaret, Nance and Charles.
Can anyone help?
Janice
