I forgot to add that my grandfather lived and died in Beech Grove, Indiana. He was an engineer for Penn Central railroad for 32 years. He married Lulu May Grey. His brother and sister names are John Scaggs and Hazel Scaggs. John lived in Indianapolis, Indiana and so did Hazel. But I really want to know if we have any Jewish blood in us.

Thank you Melody Slone

I don't have a Abrahm in any of my research. My Sanders came from Scotland between 1750-1774. And were settled in the Rutherford and Anson Co areas of NC before moving south to GA. None that I am aware of moved into KY.

There was also a girl Betsy but I don't know if she was born in NC or KY.

Do you have info on this Sanders Family?

I'm researching Williamson, I already have a huge file on Sanders. I am not familiar with Scaggs they are not my line. I think that is the fraternal line of the person who's post I was acutally responding to. Williamson's are Monroe Co., GA. Ernest (Earnest) Williamson married Ruby Lou Pelt (est. b. 1889) d/of Waymen Pelt and Sarah Elizabeth Snow. Dates are unknown for Ernest. Ernest and Ruby's daughter Mary Ellen b. Aug. 21, 1925 d. September 2000 was my grandmother.
The Dolly Williamson mentioned in the post is my mother's Aunt Dolly whom lives in Forsyth GA.

Heather I am in the same line. Mary Ellen Williamson Sanders was my grandmother. I see you posted this years ago but I am trying to find the same information on our great grandparents. I do know that Ernest had a brother named James Benjamin? Williamson who married Ruby Lou's sister Emma Pelt and they are buried in Rocky Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in northern Monroe Co. My mother showed me the unmarked grave of Ruby Lou but no Ernest to be found. Do you know where he is buried?

I'm going to try a different approach to searching for her. Let me see if I have this right.

Rose {Rosaline} Crush b. 1910 in India although Australian
Parents traveled in India acting in vaudeville plays.
Sister: Ellen Elizabeth aka Nelly ? Cain both on stage with parents. Cain brother or sister?
Other sisters Loretta aka Lottie and Maisie.
Can you tell me what order the children are in: 1,2,3,4,5. Or dates of any of them.
Rose left for America in the early 1920's.
Did she meet the American in Australia or after she got to America?
He claimed to be CEO or working at General Motors?
Ellen Elizabeth is 98 yrs old.
Austrailian relatives would like to make contact with Rose's family.

Did Rose's husband come to Austrailia or was she a mail order bride ( I don't mean disrespect but I had a Uncle that had a mail ordered bride). They were married as long as he was alive when he died. They had no children. She return to her home state Florida. I recently found where she had died. We never knew her maiden name, could not find a marriage license. When I found her death it told her maiden name.

There are many ways to look and I know you being in Australia it would be difficult to trace a family, unless you had a professional, which I am not. I just want to help because I hope when I need help with my family I will get it also.

Skaggs are famous for their talk tales so telling her he was a CEO of General Motors could have been one of them.

I'm a member of Ancestry.com and will probably go to the extra deluxe version when it is time to renew. Some things I can find now.

Bevia another Skaggs generation

I did not hear from you did you get an answer or find relatives? You said her name was Rose/Rosaline Crush. You gave the name of her sisters however you did not give her parents names. Neither did you give her husband's name. You told what he did, but not his name. In your subject you have (SCAGGS)crush rose {Rosaline} but no dates.

If you have her parent's names or a date when she came to America, or her husband's name. I just need more info to help find something for you. A lady by the name of Juanita Lutterall wrote a book on Kentucky Skaggs, but that is only one resource. If not KY we have others. Right now I'm working on Skaggs in Kansas.

I can appreciate what you want to do. My grandmother was a Skaggs (American spelling) also spelled Scaggs in early years. There were many that came from VA to Ky but also lived in other states.

I'll be happy to help and if I cannot there are many others that are here that may be able to help.

Bev e-mail bas1952@bellsouth.net or just post on this message board.

This much seems to be correct but what you will need to do is ask for copy of his social security form.

Forrest Skaggs b. 5 feb 1901 d. 3-1987 ss# 317-34-1193
died in Madison, Davidson Co. TN
Myrtle b. 20-mar-1918 d. may - 23- 1991
ss# 314-01-6330
died Hendersonville, Sumner, TN

In 1943 Forest lived in Logansport, Polks, (Cass County, IN)
In the directory it also list them Forest Skaggs (Myrtle) slsmn h11281/2 E Broadway.

If you get his SS form and if he filled it out correct it was issued in IN. This should have his parents name on it. If you get Myrtle's it should show her maiden name and then you may be able to find there marriage.

Cass County may help in finding the school you mention before they moved to TN. That maybe what happened. When they lived in TN they where in two areas 1. Am Qui, TN and Madison, TN.

I hope maybe I have given you a piece that you didn't have. Good luck, let me know how things go or if I can help more.

Bev---bas1952@bellsouth.net

The problem is we don't know the names of the parents or the twin. We do know his date of birth was 05 FEB 1901 and he died in March 1987 in Tennessee. He married a woman named Myrtle Lucille Unknown and she is also deceased. They had 2 children - an older son and a younger daughter. They gave up the son at some point to live in a 7th Day Adventist school in Indiana. There was not much (not much at all) communication between siblings or parents and son. I am helping a granddaughter of Forrest, child of the "lost" son with this search. The sister of the "lost" boy lives in Tennessee. I have been searching Indiana censuses without good results. Thanks for any help you may give.

My Scaggs relations are from Prince Georges County, Maryland and I have documemtation that dates to the mid 1700's but the line appears to go back to the 1600's..I am just stuck at the moment on Richard Scaggs, born abt 1732+/- who married Sarah Selby, daughter of William Selby of Chews Folly in Prince Geoges County, Maryland. After William Selby's death, his property was divided among his 3 children and Richard and Sarah Selby Scaggs inherited approx 94 acres. Their parcel of land continued to be called Chews Folly. I am hoping there is someone who has information regarding this family as I am stuck on finding out who Richard Scagg's father was. I suspect his name was also Richard b abt 1696 +/- and his grandfather was Aaron Scaggs who married Susannah -----. One of Aaron's many children was Charles who owned Scaggs Delight in Frederick, Maryland and whose son James may be the James Scaggs who permanently migrated to Virginia/West Virginia. Not a fact, just speculation... Thanks for your help! Leslie

She of Frederick County, VA and greatgrandaughter of Jost Hite who settled Frederick County abt 1732
James bought out his brothers and sisters shares in Chews folly and in his will he give equal shares to his children and wife.
The children of James and Mary:
1) Sarah Virginia Scaggs born 1798 in Va. She married William Gloyd. I thought she was the daughter of Catherine Reaser and James Scaggs.
2) Rebecca Scaggs born 1799 Frederick Co, VA and married George Gloyd the brother of sister Sarah’s husband.
3) Alfred B. Scaggs born January 6, 1801 and married Mary Ann Hyatt Duvall. This is my great great grandfather. I didn’t know his middle name was B presumably for Brinker
4) George B. Scaggs born 1802 in Frederick Co. Va. This is your great great grandfather.
He was married 4 times. You are a descendent of his love child, George W. Scaggs born 1827. Do you know who was the mother? This is so interesting!!
5) Isaac Pinkney Scaggs (named after a minister in the area at that time This is interesting as I had no idea where the name Pickney came from. Usually the old ones used family names but occasionally they used names of friends, etc). Born in 1803 I have 1802 as his birthdate. How did you arrive at 1803? Frederick Co. VA and married twice his second wife was Rachel Larrick. She is from Frederick County, VA. Do you know who his first wife was? I was wrong to say that Pinkney A Scaggs inherited..I rechecked the Census (below)

Adding more children to your list:

6) Selby B Scaggs ba 1805 probably Chews Folly, Prince Georges County, MD
He married 2 times beginning 1827 to 1) E. Perry and 2) S A Bounds

7) Mary Brinker Scaggs b1810 Chews Folly, Prince Georges County, MD
She married C. Haslup in 1828

8) Mary???

9) Elizabeth Scaggs b 1812 Chews Folly, Prince Georges County, MD
She married G Moore.

Below reflects Census records that show Chew’s folly was owed by frist, Isaac P Scaggs, then son George Larrick Scaggs, then his cousin Charles A Scaggs, then Minnie B Gates who was Charles A Scaggs' daughter.

1870 Fed Census Vansville, Prince Georges County, MD (This is Chews Folly)
Head Isaac Scaggs, age 68, b1802, farmer m to Rachel Scaggs b VA. (This is Rachel Larrick)
Son George (Larrick) Scaggs age 23, Can’t read my writing but looks like he owns a grocery store. I would love to see a copy of your map!!!
Daughter Rose Scaggs age 19
Son Pinkney (Asaph) Scaggs age 18, farming

1880 Fed Census Vansville, Prince Georges County, MD (This is Chews Folly)
(Isaac P Scaggs apparently died between 1870 and 1880)
Head George L (Larrick) Scaggs, age 33, farmer, m Georgia W. age 32
Daughter Virginia K , age 8
Daughter India L, age 5
My notes are pretty messy, but it looks like Brother Pickney A Scaggs was also living in this household.

I now skip to 1920 Fed Census Vansville, Prince Georges County, MD….(I need to search a little harder for 1900 and 1910 records)…..Anyway Chews Folly is now inhabited by Charles A (Alfred) Scaggs. He is the son of Charles Duvall Scaggs who was a son of Alfred Scaggs and Mary Ann Hyatt Duvall Scaggs.
But he is the Father-in-law! His daughter Minnine B Scaggs m Jospeh F Gates.

Head Joseph F Gates age 39, Blacksmith/Blacksmith Shop
Minnie B Wife, age 36
Earnest C , Son, age 5
Mildred I, Dau, age 2
Charles A Scaggs,, father-in-law, age 62 b 1858.

1930 Fed Census – Vansville, Prince Georges County, MD

Head Minnie B, Widowed, age 47
Esther, Dau, age 28, b Wash DC, bookkeeper/Dept store in DC. (Don’t know where she was in 1920 Census ! She was 18, so may have stayed in Wash DC)
Ernest, Son, age 15 b Wash DC
Mildred I, Dau, age 12 b Wash DC (Since she was born in Wash DC, going back to the 1920 census when she was age 2, it appears the Gates family had recently moved to Chews Folly to be with her father, Charles A Scaggs.)
Edwin Dooley, age 33, Roomer. Occupation: Chauffeur

This is all I have on the thread of ownership of Chews Folly
Take care,
Leslie

Hi Nancy, Thank you for the info on Richard Scaggs. I have always assumed that the Richard who married Mary Brushier was a son of Aaron. I didn't know that Aaron had a brother Richard! So many Richards...it is very confusing. I also have the information that 3 brothers came to America: Isaac, Richard and James. These names seem to have been passed down through the generations. I checked on Shirley Ulaki on the web but did not find any direct connection. Do you have an email or some way of contacting her? I would be interested to know what records she found as I have been so stuck for so long on any info regarding the Richard Scaggs who married Sarah Selby. I would also love to know how you are related! Breifly, this is my tree:
Richard Scaggs m Sarah Selby
their child James Scaggs m Mary Brinker
their child Alfred Scaggs m Mary Ann Hyatt Duvall
their child Robert E. Scaggs m Annie Peters
their child Mary Duvall Scaggs m Paul White
their child Robert Duvall White m Joyce Lahr
their child is Leslie White which is me!
Hope to hear from you again! Sincerely Leslie King

Hi Phillip, Can you provide your tree as to how you are related to Richard and Sarah Selby Scaggs? Here, briefly, is mine. I will be glad to provide you with additional info if you need it!! Right now I am in Florida until April and don't have all my Scaggs info with me.....

Richard Scaggs m Sarah Selby
One of their children was James b 1769 in Prince Georges County, VA
He married 1. ____ Reaser and they moved to VA. She died and James moved to Frederick Co, VA. There he met and married abt 1798 Mary Brinker, greatgranddaughter of Jost Hite who settled Frederick Co, VA. In 1803 after James' mother, SARAH SELBY SCAGGS had passed away, he bought out his brothers and sisters and moved back to the family homestead called Chews Folly in Prince Georges County, MD. Abt 94 acres that Sarah had inherited from her father, WILLIAM SELBY. Sarah's mother was a Magruder.
James and Mary Brinker's children:
Rebecca Scaggs b VA m G Lloyd in 1822
George Brinker Scaggs b 1800 Frederick Co, VA mar 4 times:
1. ___Anderson 2. ____Anderson 3. ____Boteler (Fuller) 4. ____Clark
ALFRED SCAGGS b 1801 Frederick Co, VA m MARY ANN HYATT DUVALL of Prince Georges County, MD Alfred is my great great grandfather!
Isaac Pickney Scaggs b 1802 Frederick Co, VA married Rachel Larrick of Frederick Co, VA. THIS IS THE ANCESTOR WHO INHERITED CHEWS FOLLY. His son George Larrick Scaggs inherited from Isaac. He had a brother named Pickney Scaggs. I don't know if Pickney married or not. My last real info is the 1880 Fed Census from Vansville, PG Co. Chews Folly is owned by George Larrick Scaggs m Georgia and they had daughters Virginia and India. The next instance I found for Vansville was the 1920 Fed Census that reflected Charles A Scaggs as owing property in Vansville. I would love it if you could fill me in on the Scaggs line that inherited the property from 1880 down to 1971. To continue with the children born to James and Mary Brinker Scaggs:
Selby B Scaggs b abt 1805 in Prince Georges, County, MD married 2 times: 1. E. Perry 2. S. A. Bounds
Mary Brinker Scaggs b abt 1810 in Prince Georges, County, MD m C Haslup in 1828.
Mary Scaggs ???
Elizabeth b abt 1812 in Prince Georges, County, MD m ___Compton and possibly ____Hill
I would be interested to know about the relationship to the Calvert County Scaggs. I didn't know my great great grandfather Alfred Scaggs middle name was Brinker. Looks like some of the children had the same middle name! Don't ask me where the name Pickney comes from. I have no idea..do you?? Well, I hope I have provided some info for you and not confused you too much! Hope to hear back from you! Sincerely, Leslie King

Hello yelrihs1932:
I saw your message posted about James Scaggs b 1769 Greenbrier VA, son George Scaggs b 1800 VA. The names and dates were such a coincidence that I couldn't help but think maybe the James Scaggs you mention is actually my 3rd great grandfather! I am in Florida until April so I don't have all the information with me, but when I get home, I can give you more info if you think this is your relatives. This is the bare bones information I have with me right now:
RICHARD SCAGGS m SARAH SELBY in Prince Georges County, MD. I'm guessing here but probably about 1750. Actually, PG County might have been Frederick County at the time but I don't remember the date Prince Georges County was carved from Frederick.
Children:
Christopher Scaggs(left Maryland)
Henry Scaggs
William Scaggs(left Maryland)
Sarah Scaggs m B Hill of Frederick Co, MD in 1778
Rachel Scaggs(left Maryland)
Eleanor Scaggs m B Norris
Susannah Scaggs m J Atkins
Elizabeth Scaggs m Mr Compton
JAMES SCAGGS b 1769 in Prince Georges, County, MD m 1. ____Reaser. He moved to VA. She died there but they had a baby daughter. I have better info at home! James then moved to Frederick Co VA and
m 2. Mary Brinker from Frederick Co VA. Granddaughter of Jost Hite who settled Frederick County, VA. In 1803 after his mother, SARAH SELBY SCAGGS had passed away, he bought out his brothers and sisters and moved to the family homestead called Chews Folly in Prince Georges County, MD .
Hi Leslie great to hear from you.
I believe I’m related to Richard and Sarah Selby Scaggs also?
Here briefly, is mine.
One of there children was James born 1774 in Greenbrier Co. WVa.
He married 1. Catharine Reaser she died in 1797 Probably in Childbirth.
Then James married Mary Brinker 20 Feb 1798.
James bought out his brothers and sisters shares in Chews folly and in his will he give equal shares to his children and wife.
The children of James and Mary:
1)	Sarah Virginia Scaggs born 1798 in Va. She married William Gloyd.
2)	Rebecca Scaggs born 1799 and married George Gloyd the brother of sister Sarah’s husband.
3)	Alfred B. Scaggs born January 6, 1801 and married Mary Ann Hyatt Duvall.
4)	George B. Scaggs born 1802 in Va. This is my great great grandfather?
Yes he was married 4 times but I a descended of his love child. George W. Scaggs born 1827.
I have written to the Anderson family many times and they have no record of his birth. George B. was married to Sarah Anderson February 9 1825 until her death in 1831. We have very little information on him except for some land records until his marriage in 1856. We have a letter written between to relatives, in which one states that George B. was there grandfather. There is also the fact that my grandfather gave away to a girlfriend his share of Chew’s folly in 1971.
5) Isaac Pinkney Scaggs (named after a minister in the area at that time). Born in 1803 and married twice his second wife was Rachel Larrick. You say the Pinkney inherited Chews Folly. As I read James’s will “And decree --- is after the deceased or marriage of my wife that the residue of my Estate both real and personal be sold by my ----- and the money divided equally share and share alike between George Scaggs, Rebecca Scaggs, Alfred Scaggs, Isaac Scaggs, Selby Scaggs, Mary Scaggs, Margaret Scaggs and Elizabeth Scaggs these their heirs and ----- forever. “
So it was not sold but all given to Isaac Pinkney. I have found a few thing about Pinkney, I have a map that show were he lived and were his store was located.
I would love to see what you have that shows that Chew’s folly was owed entirely by George Larrick Scaggs. He only had daughters and my George W. Scaggs was too old to be his son. This story is getting twisted more and more.
Let’s wait until you get home and I’m going out of the country end of this month. Let’s think about it for a while but if you have something on George Larrick Scaggs as owner of the Chew’s folly please send it.

I just go home late last night and have a lot of thing to check up on so let me look over what you have sent and think about what I have said and we will get together soon.
Phillip Grimes
You can always write me directly at qpa@juno.com
Hi Leslie
I have been very busy so I don’t have time to research my stuff right now but will do so when I get back from Costa Rica next month. I did read through what you sent and I have many questions.

I don’t show any children from the union of James Scaggs and Catharine Reaser. Do you? (Except for your Sarah Virginia Scaggs). I was told by one researcher that James had a sister named Sarah Virginia Scaggs and that is whom the child was named after. My records show that Catharine died in 1797 the year before Sarah was born and James married Mary Brinker in 1798 the year Sarah was born so that maybe were I believed Mary was the mother.
I have 8 with Mary Brinker.

From your information that James was born in 1769 that would make him 30 years old when his daughter Rebecca was born. My information of him has him being born in 1774 in Greenbrier Co. WVa. makes him only 5 years younger. We can look at that again.
You are saying that James and many of his siblings were all born in Chew’s folly? Were did you find this information?
You know that Sarah Selby inherited her 184-acre share of Chew’s folly from her father. How much of it was owned by Isaac P. Scaggs then his son George Larrick Scaggs and then his cousin Charles A. Scaggs. The last you have is that Charles A. Scaggs was the owner of Chew’s folly? Or maybe it was Minnie and this is 1930? How do you know this is Chew’s folly? I know this family and have corresponded with them many time and 10 years ago I visited one if then Fay in Scaggsville but I never asked her about Chew’s folly. I did not meet at her home, we meet at the library and she drove me around town and visited the cemeteries, church and a few of the sites. I don’t have her address with me and we haven’t written in a long time. I will try and get hold of her and ask about Chew’s folly. I don’t have time right now to go down that road but I will start next month when I get home. But if you have anything please send it along and I will pursue it when I get back. Do you have an address for Chew’s folly or some way to identify it or do you think it maybe. What happen to the rest of Chew’s folly that the other Selby children inherited? Your Charles A. Scaggs the last owner you have of Chew’s folly died in Scaggsville in 1954 and Minnie died in 1977 in Washington DC. What happen to Chew’s folly?

I would love to send you a photocopy of the map but I will need either an e-mail address or some were to mail it to. I don’t know how to load a JPeg to this website. The map has an advertisement for P.A. Scaggs store on it. I have other’s form Prince George’s County I bought in books.
There are other Scaggs’s on the map; one is a Hosa Scaggs and another that looks like Hadute Scaggs. I don’t know whom they are, do you. The map is of Vansville Dist. No. 1 dated 1878. The area were P.A. Scaggs is located in Branchville P.O. I have another map printed in 1861 of the Vansville Dist 1 printed in 1861, which show an Isaac Scaggs, but it is very hard to read.
Thanks for everything and I look forward to hearing from you again.
Phillip Grimes
Hi Leslie
My Scaggs Family has lived in Calvert County Md. for over 150 years. My grandfather gave away to a girl friend his share of Chews Folly was willed away in 1971. I have traced Chews Folly back to Sarah Shelby and Richard Scaggs and because of this conection believe we are relatied. There are a few weak spots in my research that maybe you could help me with. I have lived in California for the past 45 years and don't get home to Maryland very offten but I have been told that some decendence of Alfred Brinker Scaggs may still live on a part of Chews Folly. If you would be so kind as to help me fill in some of the blank on my Scaggs Family. Thank you for any and all help you maybe will to give.

Hi,
I think we are researching the same families. I have a William Mason Scaggs b. Blaine, Lawrence County KY March 20, 1829, d. November 30, 1905. m. Adaline Ferguson, b. August 17, 1828, d. January 23, 1908. They had 3 children, John, b. September 02, 1853; Lindsy, b. February 15, 1856; Harry (my grandfather), b. January 07, 1859. All but Lindsy were buried in the family cemetery on Patrick Creek in Wayne County WV. Could John Scaggs b. 1808 be John Patrick Scaggs b. abt 1797 to Peter & Martha Scaggs?

According to Shirley Ulaki, genealogist, our Richards are as follows:Richard-emigrated probably from England and born between 1645-50. Richard Junior born 1682 and brother to Aaron. Ruchard's first wife was Grace. They married around 1705. His second wife was Mary Brushier/Brashier.Married in Dec. 1727 in Queen Ann Parish, Prince George County. He had a Richard III born May 8, 1724. Aaron of Queen Anne's Parish was a son of Richard Sr. and born about 1685. He died around 1715. Aaron married Susanna who was expecting when he died. The children of Aaron and Susannah were Charles born Dec. 09, 1709, Moses (my ancestor through James"Longman" Scaggs) born Jul. 10, 1714 and Susannah born Aug. 11, 1716. Moses was also the father of the early longhunter Scaggses. THat is all I have on the Richards.
