My Grandmother was Katie Scarlett, daughter of Greeley Scarlett (born Almon Scarlett), son of Greeley Scarlett, son of Newman Scarlett(3), first born son of Newman Scarlet(2), first born son of Newman Scarlett of Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

Most of my information about the Scarlett family came from Carol Craig who published the family history years ago.

Our direct line of Scarletts goes no further since Greeley (2) had only 2 daughters and was, himself, an only son.

Just picked up your message about a James Scarlett in Suffolk. I am descended from several James Scarletts in Suffolk, James b 1758, James his son born 1781, James his son born 1804/5 but then from his second son (the eldest was James) Thomas, born 1838. Any connection? email me at home, thebyasts@btinterent.com
Moira Scarlett

Scarlett family in Norfolk

I can trace my family to William Fisher and Mary Scarlett who registered the birth of their son William Fisher Scarlett in Norwich in 1766 (Parish Norwich St Andrew). This William Scarlett married Mary Cubitt; they had several children including Samuel Scarlett (b 1797, Norwich St Giles), my several times grandfather; he was at some point a warder at Norwich prison. I have not been able to place Mary Scarlett (born I presume about 1730-1750)in other Scarlett trees posted on line, and know nothing about William Fisher's origins. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who could add to my knowledge.

I have Sarah Emeline Wilson as the second wife of Moses N. Scarlett. First wife was Jane Angelina Cates.
Moses and Jane married in 1843. In 1850 Moses( 50y) and Jane (35y)were living in Orange County, NC with 5 y.o. daughter Sarah. Moses was a cooper.
Moses' parents were Thomas and Elizabeth (Laycock) Scarlett.
Information found on the web gives Thomas' parents as Thomas and Anna (James) Scarlett.

In 1860, Moses (55y, a cooper, is living with James Scarlett (60y)also a cooper, and a 16 y.o. named Betsie, in Orange County, NC.

A couple of years ago I was visited by Gary Belding, a descendant of the Tennessee Scarletts. His email address is/was: snakebit@comcast.net.

His street address is:
Gary R. Belding
376 Devon Drive
Lemoore, CA 93245-4344

At the time he had just come from Tennessee where he did a lot of research.

My Thomas was born at about the same time as Moses but he died in Monterrey, Mexico in 1848. It is possible that he and Moses were brothers.

Good luck.

Carol

My husband's great-grandfather was Thomas Scarlett, born 1839. He fought in the Civil War and was the son of Thomas Scarlett who fought and died in the War with Mexico. (This all attested to in pension records.) Beyond this I am stuck. Too many Thomases, Johns, James, Georges, etc.

Am also stuck in determing the parents of Mexican war Thomas' wife, Wiley (sometimes spelt Willie)Crabtree. They were not mentioned in the marriage bond or in any of the pension letters.

Good luck.

Carol

My information is about what you have. In my database I have a couple of marriages for a John Scarlett born circa 1710. Elizabeth Humphreys, Jane Scarlett and Catherine Morris. Nothing to tell me if they were all married to the same 1710 John.

Biggest stumbling block in researching Scarlett is the number of individuals of about the same age with the same given names.I am stuck in 1806 with Thomas, who died in Monterey in the war with Mexico. I can prove everything up to him. Beyond him nothing is certain.

Carol

I have much the same information, except when we get to John (born 1737). I have three sources that say his wife was Jane. No last name provided. And because he is listed as John Jr. I assume his father was John Sr.. However, back then, men could be given that title based not on kinship but upon who was the older of two men with the same name, living in the same town.

I never did determine Jemima's parents.

Who was the Charles in Jemima's name?

Have you contacted Lorelei Scarlett? her husband is descended from Stephen Scarlett who traveled from Orange County, NC to Orange County, Indiana.
I have gone back as far as Samuel (1798)m. Jemima Charles Dunbar (from Joel Charles/Mary Blackburn). Samuel's father was Samuel (1769?) m. Rebecca Lewis (from Nathaniel Lewis/Elizabeth ?). Samuel's father was John , Jr. (1737) m. Mary Dixon (1742). John's father was another John. Can you help with any of this?

There are a number of the North Carolina Scarletts that moved to Jackson and Putnam Counties, Tennessee. Thomas and John are in Jackson Co. in 1840, then in the later years, there are more. Yes, they all have the same names. Some of the Scarletts appear to have remained in Putnam Co. I am particularly interested in John W. Scarlett that went to Parker County, Texas about 1878. The cemetery record in Parker County reports that he is the son of Moses N. Scarlett and Sarah Wilson. He married Almira Carr in Putnam County about 1869. I have a copy of her Civil War Widow's Pension Application. There is also a William Thomas Scarlett buried in the same cemetery that may be his younger brother (half-brother?)

Their son James (1827) married Caroline Pace (there has to be a connection here) and then Sarah Ann Van Gundy. They lived in Indiana. Their son Samuel married Mary Ann Lippincott (my great grandparents). They moved to California, where I am from. How are we connected?
I know this is several years later, but I am researching the same family. Do you have any information on the parents of George Scarlett b. 1752 in Orange County NC. I thought they might be John Scarlett and Elizabeth Humphreys, son of John Scarlett and Elinor Martin. Odd George does not appear on any census reports that I could find. I know he died about 1825 but he must have been somewhere.
