Schaefer DNA testing

Looking at the messages from this group it is clear that many are having dificulties tracing their origins. May I suggest the use of DNA profiling. This can be done for free at smgf.org - the Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation in Utah. Results are posted publically online but recent generations are hidden for the sake of privacy. Nevertheless it is not difficult to determine from earlier members in the family trees provided whether there is a relationship. Schaefer and its many spelling variants is/was a common name in germany so there are likely to be many unrelated 'tribes'. DNA testing helps to decide which one we belong to. I realise there is a certain reticence or paranoia about biometric testing but this is unfounded. My own results are on smgf as well as Y-Search and other sites. But we need many more contributors to make this endeavour fruitful.

happy hunting

Nick Schaefer

I looking for any information regarding Henry/Heinrich Schaefer/Schäfer who married Ann Arkularius before 1856.

I have one son Wilhelm/William Schaefer (middle name was either Paul or Henry or both) born 13 Mar 1856 in Hesse-Darmstadt that owned a musical instrument shop in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa. He was married to Henriette Louise Auguste "Gussie" Krekel. They lived on Main Street in a house that overlooked the Mississippi River.

According to the 1920 census, son William's arrival date was 1866, when he was only 10 years old - so I am hoping one or both of his parents came with him.

There are other Schaefers in Burlington, Des Moines County, but I don't know how they fit it - I'm sure they were related somehow.

Any information is appreciated and I will be glad to share.

I am trying to find the town of origin of my ancestors who immigrated to America from Prussia (Preuben). I know when they came to the US sometime between 1847 and 1851 that the spelling of the family name changed to Shafer. My great great great grandfather came with his family to the US when he was a young child. His name was Charles F. Shafer. He had two brothers named Sebastian and Fredric and a sister Caroline. His father was named Fredric or Friedric and his mother was named Leanna. The entire family came through the port in Philadelphia. The census records I find on them state their birth country as Prussia, but I don't know where to start trying to find where in Prussia they originated. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone? Charles son was David H. Schafer and David's daughter was Clara B. Shafer who married Lewis Franklin Hughey. They were my great grandparents.

Hi, I am stuck and need info. about my great-grandfather Detlefson and the Schaefers in Ladue Mo. There are several family stories that the Schaefer's owned a successful chandelier making business and lost their money in the stock market crash. Detlefson's family supposedly came to St. Louis through Canada from Germany/Bavaria. I was told the orginal spelling of our name is Schafer.

Detlefson's wife was Lula, Lina, or Mina. Not sure. Any replies would be appreciated.

Beth

I attempting to find some answers to one of two dead-ends in my family tree and would appreciate it if anyone might have any information. The only information I have is that a Mr. Schaeffer married a Ms. Phelan, having at least one child whom was named Edward Schaeffer in 1889.

I believe the family was primarily located in Berlin, Prussia/Germany; but I am not sure where the husband and wife were individually born and raised. Their son Edward emigrated to the USA around the time of the first World War. I am descended through him, so I could provide more information relating to descendants should anyone recognise the above.

Common spelling variants:
- Schaeffer, Schafer, Shaeffer, Shaffer, Schaffer, Schaefer, Shaefer, Shafer
- Phelan, Phalen, Whelan, Faoláin, Felan

SCHAEFER, JOSEPH EDWARD; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

SCHAEFER, JOSEPH E.

Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company I, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Stolberg, Germany, 24 September 1944. Entered service at: Long Island, N.Y. Birth: New York, N.Y. G.O. No.: 71, 22 August 1945. Citation: He was in charge of a squad of the 2d Platoon in the vicinity of Stolberg, Germany, early in the morning of 24 September 1944, when 2 enemy companies supported by machineguns launched an attack to seize control of an important crossroads which was defended by his platoon. One American squad was forced back, another captured, leaving only S/Sgt. Schaefer's men to defend the position. To shift his squad into a house which would afford better protection, he crawled about under heavy small-arms and machinegun fire, instructed each individual, and moved to the building. A heavy concentration of enemy artillery fire scored hits on his strong point. S/Sgt. Schaefer assigned his men to positions and selected for himself the most dangerous one at the door. With his Ml rifle, he broke the first wave of infantry thrown toward the house. The Germans attacked again with grenades and flame throwers but were thrown back a second time, S/Sgt. Schaefer killing and wounding several. Regrouped for a final assault, the Germans approached from 2 directions. One force drove at the house from the front, while a second group advanced stealthily along a hedgerow. Recognizing the threat, S/Sgt. Schaefer fired rapidly at the enemy before him, killing or wounding all 6; then, with no cover whatever, dashed to the hedgerow and poured deadly accurate shots into the second group, killing 5, wounding 2 others, and forcing the enemy to withdraw. He scoured the area near his battered stronghold and captured 10 prisoners. By this time the rest of his company had begun a counterattack; he moved forward to assist another platoon to regain its position. Remaining in the lead, crawling and running in the face of heavy fire, he overtook the enemy, and liberated the American squad captured earlier in the battle. In all, single-handed and armed only with his rifle, he killed between 15 and 20 Germans, wounded at least as many more, and took 10 prisoners. S/Sgt. Schaefer's indomitable courage and his determination to hold his position at all costs were responsible for stopping an enemy break-through.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Farmingdale, New York

Cemetery: Long Island National Cemetery

Born: 1918 at New York, NY

Died: 1987

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/schae...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Sophie/Sophia Schaefer -- Voelklingen/Volklingen, Germany

Hi, My great-grandmother, Sophie Schafer, was born October 20, 1865, in Voelklingen, Germany. She was the daughter of Karl Schaefer and Sophia Kramer. I believe Sophie was one of seven children (4 boys & 3 girls). One of Sophie's brothers, also named Karl, was born June 16, 1867, most likely in Voelklingen. Sophie came to the United States in June or July 1890. She settled in Reinbeck, Iowa, but we don't know what brought her to that town. Sophie married George Fuerstenberg on November 20, 1890. Sophie & George had 8 children: Dora, Fred, Emma, Karl, Elizabeth, Martha, Elsie & Mary. Sophie died August 22, 1946, in Minnesota. Does anyone have additional information on Sophie's family in Voelklingen? Thanks!!

I have a wonderful little boy picture of Donald Schaefer, the son of A. E. Schaefer, a conductor on the streetcars in St. Louis. It appeared in a small employee written magazine called The Public Servicer. The picture appeared in June 1930. I would be happy to scan the picture to anyone interested in it.

He received his education in his native town, and worked for his father until 25 years old, when he established the same business for himself, which he conducted for ten years. He also served two years in the army in the old country. He came to America in 1847, and located in this county, and engaged in farming until 1875, when he retired and came to Muscoda to live. He was married, Feb. 7, 1837, to Miss Anna Margaret Meyer, a native of Germany. Peter Schaefer, a son of John C., was born in Iowa Co. in 1849. He lived with his parents until he was 12 years old. He then engaged as clerk in a general store for Mr. Daniel Zimas in 1867.

I have an original studio photograph of “Lillian Schaefer”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1901-1902, in Barrington (on Cook/Lake Co. line) IL, and she looks to be about 8 months old. The photo has mention on the back of Nelta Lageschutte (sp?). I found that Lillian’s sister was Nelta, born 13 Apr 1899, so this surely is the Nelta referred to.

Ancestry Family Tree shows that Lillian was born 29 Apr 1901 in Barrington, IL, dau of John Schaefer and wife Luella B. Meiners.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Lillian Schaefer.

Schaefer living in New York from Austria or Hungary

I am looking for a Schaefer family from Austria/Hungrary living in New York about 1892-1900. This family of Schaefers inherited a fortune (apparently millions) back about 1895-1920 from a rich relative who died in Austria/Hungrary.
My relative, Ella Schaefer (or Schaeffer) came to the US from Austria/Hungrary about 1892 and knew 7 languages. Her family may have lived in Budapest. Her mother Amelia Schlock Shaefer came to the US about 1905. Her father was Andrew Schaefer, but he may have died in Austria/Hungary before 1906.
Ella Schaefer came to the US in 1892, possibly to NY and may have been a translator at Ellis Island before moving to the Boston area where she may have worked for the State Govt as an interpreter. She married George Copp (born 1874 in Austria/Hungary) about 1894 and had children Ella (1895), George (1897), Anna/Helen (1901) and John (1903) all in Melrose MA, USA. Ella died 2 June 1923 MA & was buried 2 June 1923 Wyoming Cemetery Melrose MA.

Ella's sisters and brothers were Lillian (Lily), Carl and Hugo, all born about 1880 in Austria/Hungary, Anna (b abt 1884-87) who married Leopold Gross in MA about 1903, Teresa/theresa Schaefer (b abt 1892 Austria Hungary) and 6 other sisters and brothers.

I am searching for information on Adam Schaefer, born in Hainchen, Hesse Darmstadt Germany in 1855. He came to America in 1867 with his mother Maria and his sister Catherine. Maria and Catherine lived in Pittsburgh, PA, but I can't seem to find Adam. Maria's maiden name is Henrich. I have records from the LDS on the family into the 1700s and would like to share. His father left the family in Germany and immigrated about 1858. Perhaps Adam ended up with him, but I don't know where. Any clues out there?
