Searching for relatives of my 3rd great-grandfather Adam Schaub/Shaab/Shaup. Adam was born in Hesse-Darmstadt abt 1826. His wife was Elizabeth Overbaur, born in Baden, Germany, abt 1834. Children Catherine and William were born in Illinois 1853-1855, others Paulina, Adam, Joseph, George and Gertrude were born in Jackson County, Iowa, before 1872. Adam owned a bakery in Bellevue, Iowa, and his name in various spellings is in the census records from 1860 until 1880.

The family story has it that Adam went west with one or more brothers, names unknown, and no one ever said where they started from. One of the brothers left for California in the Gold Rush of 1849 and was never heard from again. If this tale rings a bell with anyone, I sure would like to hear from you.
