Thank you, I have not been able to root out many of the newspaper clippings long distance and this info about Clara's wedding to Rudolph Polacheck is useful in two ways. First, it clarifies the confusion over the date of Retta's marriage to Harry Ogden (although still leaves questions about the parentage of Charlotte and Audrey Jacquette/Shauer), and then also it explains a letter from my ggfather Emil E Shauer to my ggmother (his first wife, Isabella Anderson), talking about "the wedding" and the fact that she was going to make the trip back there from NYC even though she was pregnant and he couldn't make it... six months afterward, on Aug 7 1907, she died in childbirth.

I am sorry that I confused you. The record I saw was the marriage of Clarice Shauer with R. Rudolph Polacheck.

Chicago Tribune February 11, 1907 (Page 11): Miss Clarice Louise Shauer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav George Shauer, 501 South Kenilworth Avenue, Oak Park, will be married to Mr. R. Rudolph Polacheck of Milwaukee Wednesday evening, February 27, at 7:30 o'clock, at the house.

Chicago Tribune February 24, 1907 (Page H-3): Miss Clarice ouise Shauer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav G. Shauer, 501 South Kenilworth Avenue, Oak Park, will be married to Mr. Rudolph Polacheck of Milwaukee on Wednesday at the home of her parents. Miss Retta Rose Shauer, a sister, will be maid of honor, and Miss Emella Eiser and Miss Elsie Polacheck wll beribbon bearers. Mr. David Polacheck will act as best man for his brother. Mr. and Mrs. Polacheck will go East for two weeks, and will then reside in Milwaukee.

PS what is your documentation for the date of marriage (1907) of Retta Shauer to Harry Ogde, and his parentage of the girls ? Because, RE Charlotte and Audrey, children of Retta Shauer, they are listed in the 1910 census living in the household of Gus Shauer in Oak Park, Chicago: Retta Jacquette, daughter, age 19 with granddaughters Charlotte Jacquette, age 2, granddaughter, and Audrey Jacquette, age 4/12 yr (ie born about Feb 1910). No sign of the father, either Jacquette or Ogden. Then in the 1920 census, Charlotte (granddaughter) and Retta (daughter, widow) are again living in the household of Gus (George) and Louise Shauer, this time in Valparaiso, and their last name is indicated as Shauer, still no sign of Jacquette or Ogden. But Audrey is listed next door in the household of George A and Nellie Shauer, and is listed as their daughter. Perhaps adopted by her uncle and aunt? Later in life Audrey and Charlotte used the surname Shauer. I have letters from them to my grandfather.
Thank you for your reply and information. My father visited Valpo as a child with his own father (Melville Shauer) and remembers meeting a cousin Justin. Mel Shauer was son of Emil E Shauer, who was either a step brother or nephew of Gustave G Shauer, Justin's grandfather. My Dad lost track of that side of the family, however. I would like to reconnect.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is the right family, I had actually seen the clip about the planned theater. Some of the birth dates and last names are new info so very helpful. Thanks. My Dad remembers meeting Justin. I have a pic of my ggfather with Gus and Gus' brother Louis in Chicago; I think they were half brothers or perhaps the older Gus and Louis were uncles. Haven't sorted out the relationship. But I think my ggfather, Emil, was one link to the movie business as an associate of Adolph Zukor at Paramount Pictures. Thanks!

Re: Seeking descendants of Gustave G. Shauer

My Grandfather, Henry L. Newhouse of Chicago, was an architect who dsigned a theater in Valparaiso in 1920 for George A. Shauer. Economist: THEATER, STORE AND OFFICE BUILDING: Architect Henry L. Newhouse,4630 Prairie Avene, is receiving bids on a two-story building, 73 x 82, to contain a modern theater, with seating capacity of 1,500 and stage, four store and fifteen offices, to be erected at the corner in Valaparaiso, for G. G. Shauer & Sons Company of that town. The theater will be fireproof, reinforced concrete construction, with steel trusses, and the building will have pressed and stone front, steam heat, tile flooring and will cost about $ 100,000.

I did some research on the family of George Shauer. He was born in Chicago on September 4, 1883, and died in Valarapaiso on February 6, 1940. He was married in Chicago on September 17, 1907 to Nell C. Schlesonger, who was born on April 28, 1883, and died in Valparaiso on April 3, 1971.

Gustave G. Shauer (George's father) was born January 26, 1856 in Germany, and died in Valparaiso on May 4, 1934. He was married in Chicago on October 12, 1881 to Louis Charlotte Brundage. Louise was born April 2, 1865 in Aurora, Illinois and died in Chicago on January 19, 1933.

Besides George, Gustave and Louise had four other children--Herbert who was born in Chicago and died in Chicago on April 5, 1909.

Clara was born in Chicago and died in Milwaukee,Wisconsin on August 15, 1970. She was married to Rudolph Polacheck who was born in Milwaukee on May 17, 1880, and died in Milwaukee on June 9, 1946. They had two children, Herbert and Jane.

Retta was born in Chicago on August 21, 1890 and died in Valparaiso on December 26, 1957. She was married in Chicago in 1907 to Harry H. Ogden. Harry died in Valparaiso on March 3, 1933. The had two children, Charltte and Audrey.

Justin O. Shauer was born in Chicago on November 16, 1896 and died in Valparaiso on October 3, 1962. He was married in Valparaiso on February 14, 1922 to Ethel Grandstaff. Ethel was born on December 8, 1898 and died in Vlparaiso on April 1982. They had two children, George and Jane.

I hope this has been of some help to you.

I can verify some of the story. I also looked for Paul Schauer in the uprising records of death. Like wise I heard the story of him riding off to help friends and never returning. These are facts that no one seems to be able to verify. But I can share this. When my family moved to Henderson, Mn in 1964 there was a small mechantile that was owned by the Schutlz brothers and would refer to my father as a distant cousin. Dad never ask what was up but remembered it when I started digging.

If you find anything let me know.

Larry

Ok, here is an update.

I located a August Schauer that served in the 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He enlisted in on Aug 4th 1862. By reading the details, it does not look like he was killed. No further info found, I know that Rosina was my GG Grandma, so now I am a bit more confused. Here is the reference and interesting history of the the MN 6th, Company E.
http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=LTDtwfOx0HQC&...
or search google for 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and Schauer and you should find it.
Thanks for the info, I'll look into it further. I just found it fascinating that it happened there. My dad's uncles did always say that there were Indians buried out in the woods.
One story I remember my dad telling me was how my g. g. grandfather had a pretty good dog and an Indian killed a deer, but couldn't find it. So apparently the Indian came to my g.g.grandfather and asked for his dog's help in finding it. Long story short, the dog found the deer and the Indian gave my g.g.grandfather half of the deer in thanks. Not sure if that's true, but it's still kind of a nice story.
Anyway, thanks for the info on where to look for the uprising details. No, I hadn't heard of this before, but thank you for bringing it up so I can research it further! : ) It's so fun finding out things when doing family tree research!
thanks again!

I know nothing about the Indian uprising other then what I have read in books or on the computer. I do know that my g-g-grandmother had cousins who were murdered by the Indian's during that uprising. That is what started me into researching into what I know. You will be able to access everything that I read on your own.
I am sorry, but I really do not have any specifics as far as family lore here on my end.
Re-reading your email I am not sure if you have 'ever' heard of the uprising??? It did take place and can be read about in area (McLeod & Sibley Co. liberary's) also researcher have written family history books which include detailed stories of the events that took place during this time. I 'think' it was between the years of 1862 & 1864.
Please tell me more about the Schauers and Indian massacre that took place by the church. I am relation to those Schauers and have been to that place many, many, many times to visit family. One of my father's uncles always talked about the Indians and said they were very nice people, but he never made mention of a massacre. He said that they were moved to a reservation.
My grandfather's name was Lawrence and his father's name was Edward. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated! I'm just starting out in the research of the family.

I'm fairly new at this, but I'm related to the Schauers from Green Isle, MN
My grandfather was Lawrence Schauer. He had four brothers Elmer, Leonard, Bernard and Melvin and there were two sisters, one Berniece and one named Mandy. I've just started doing research, but I think that Lawrence's dad's name was Edward.
Do you have any more information on this family pertaining to Edward's parents or his wife, Elsie Krone, parents?
Feel free to email me directly.

You may have already found some of this out, but there is an online Pedigree that I found...here is the address.....
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&...
It seems pretty valid. It starts out with Edward, which is my g.g. grandfather. Then goes up from there. I know that my father has told me that Karolina died in childbirth (1867) after having some children, and then Wilhelm married Rosa in 1869 and they had some children as well. That's all I really know as of right now. Hope it helps a little bit at least!
Happy searching!
chrystal

I have a photo album dating to approx. the early 1900s. Most of the photos are from SW Minnesota. One photo appears to be a wedding photo, taken by a photographer in Westbrook, MN. The photo itself has no identifying information on it. The album has this photo marked as "Rinkalt Schauer." If this is your relative, please email at my AOL address to arrange for a copy of this photo to add to your collection.

SCHAUER, HENRY - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

SCHAUER, HENRY

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Army, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Cisterna di Littoria, Italy, 23-24 May 1944. Entered service at: Scobey, Mont. Born: 9 October 1918, Clinton, Okla. G.O. No.: 83, 27 October 1944. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. On 23 May 1944, at 12 noon, Pfc. (now T/Sgt.) Schauer left the cover of a ditch to engage 4 German snipers who opened fire on the patrol from its rear. Standing erect he walked deliberately 30 yards toward the enemy, stopped amid the fire from 4 rifles centered on him, and with 4 bursts from his BAR, each at a different range, killed all of the snipers. Catching sight of a fifth sniper waiting for the patrol behind a house chimney, Pfc. Schauer brought him down with another burst. Shortly after, when a heavy enemy artillery concentration and 2 machineguns temporarily halted the patrol, Pfc. Schauer again left cover to engage the enemy weapons single-handed. While shells exploded within 15 yards, showering dirt over him, and strings of grazing German tracer bullets whipped past him at chest level, Pfc. Schauer knelt, killed the 2 gunners of the machinegun only 60 yards from him with a single burst from his BAR, and crumpled 2 other enemy soldiers who ran to man the gun. Inserting a fresh magazine in his BAR, Pfc. Schauer shifted his body to fire at the other weapon 500 yards distant and emptied his weapon into the enemy crew, killing all 4 Germans. Next morning, when shells from a German Mark VI tank and a machinegun only 100 yards distant again forced the patrol to seek cover, Pfc. Schauer crawled toward the enemy machinegun. stood upright only 80 yards from the weapon as its bullets cut the surrounding ground, and 4 tank shells fired directly at him burst within 20 yards. Raising his BAR to his shoulder, Pfc. Schauer killed the 4 members of the German machinegun crew with 1 burst of fire.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Salem, Oregon
Cemetery: City View Cemetery

Born: 1918 Clinton, OK

Died: 1997

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/schau...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Vernon Schauer & brothers Leo, Vincent, Edward, sons of Frank/Anastasia of Chicago, all in WWII

I have an original 5x7” photograph of “Vernon and Leo and Vincent and Edward Schauer”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1942, and Vernon and Vincent look to be in Army uniforms, Leo in a Navy uniform and Edward in his Marine uniform. The amazing thing about this photo is that it is taken in the front yard of a home, where there is a military banner/flag in the front window with seven stars, indicating seven sons in service.

I found the family of Frank and Anastasia Schauer in the 1920 census for Chicago, showing sons: Francis 13; Vernon 12; Leo 10; Walter 8; Eugene 5; Gordon 4-1/2; Vincent 1. In 1930 census, I found Edward, among the last of the sons.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Schauer family.

Yes, I am still interested in finding more info on Emil/Elmer Schauer. My father (his son), passed away this past Jan. 2008 at 75 yrs. I have a letter from my grandmother saying that possibly Mr. Schauer passed at age 73 yrs. of a heart attack while watching TV and by profession was a carpenter.

Working on genealogy stuff today and came across your reply to my earlier message on Ancestry about the Schauer family of York/Lebanon and Berks counties.

I'll just throw out some names, and maybe you can find a match. I start with the earliest that I know.

John Schauer and his wife Eva (both born in Berks County ABT. 1796). She died in 1850.
Children:
1) Peter B. (b. 28/Aug/1830 in Berks County)
2) Catharine -- twin (b. 7/Nov/1822 in Berks County)
3) Lydia -- twin (b. 7/Nov/1822 in Berks County)
4) Maria (b. 20/Jul/1820)
5) Ellena (b. 22/Sept/1827)
6) William (b. ABT 1837)
7) John (b. ABT 1832)

My line stems from Peter B. who was a carpet weaver and possible a minister as well. I believe he was married three times. 1) Henrietta 2) Maria M. (Mary) 3) Annie Y. Ella Rhine. At some point, Peter B. moved from Berks County to Lebanon.
I believe his son John H. is a product of his second marriage.
John H. (b. ABT 1862, d. ABT 1938-40). I believe he also was married three times. 1) Annie Kline 2) Mary Kline (sister) 3) Cora L. Coroner's records show that Mary Kline committed suicide by firearm in 1925, but that is after John H. was married to Cora (at least that's what I think) So I'm guessing that John H. and Mary got a divorce somewhere between 1901 and 1903 (because in 1903, John H. was living with his father and step-mother with no mention of a wife. By 1911, records show that he was living with Cora L.

My line stems from the only son of John H. and Annie (Kline) Schauer. Irwin Franklin Schauer (b. 1855, d. 10/Nov/1930). He moved to York and married Annie Rebecca Riley (of the Spring Grove area) on 26/May/1906. Their only son is my great-grandfather who is still living. He turns 95 in April.

Any matches?

Thanks for your help.
Christy Young

I responded to the e-mail listed as bynx@pa.net. I hope you received my message. For other researchers, I will post this family info here:

John H. SCHAUER (b. ABT 1861/1862, d. ABT 1938-40)

m. Annie Kline (d. 8/Jan/1887)
They had one child:
1) Irwin Franklin (b. 1885, d. 10/Nov/1930)

m. 3/Oct/1893 to Mary Kline (sister to Annie) (d. 2/Feb/1925)
Their children:
2) Charles M. (b. ABT 1904)
3) Paul W. (b. ABT 1908)
4) Harry M. (B. ABT 1909)

m. 27/Jul/1907 to Cora L. Miller (Source: York County Marriages 1885-1906)

NOTES:
I believe John H. was married three times. His occupation is listed in various places as laborer and carpet weaver.

Coroner's records show that his second wife, Mary Kline, committed suicide by firearm on Feb. 2, 1925, but that is after John H. was married to Cora (at least that's what I think). So I'm guessing that John H. and Mary got a divorce somewhere between 1901 and 1903 (because in 1903, John H. was living with his father and step-mother with no mention of a wife.) By 1911, records show that he was living with Cora.

SOURCES:
1917 Polk’s Lebanon Directory:
Schauer, John H. (laborer), E. Scull near 9th Avenue. At home: Mrs. Cora, Mabel M., Charles M., Stella M., Paul M., Harry M.

1925-26 Polk’s Lebanon Directory
John H. Schauer (laborer). Wm Penn Hwy, Avon. Schauer, Nov. 14, 1941, Age 78-0-23.
Re: Looking for Relatives of Schauer Family

While I can't seem to match our lines up with the names you listed, I'm sure we must be part of the same Schauer family... I mean... how many Schauers can there be from Lebanon PA? My line starts with John and Eva Schauer (both b. ABT 1796 in Berks County). Their son Peter B. Schauer (b. 1830 in Berks County) at some point moved to Lebanon. He had a son John H. Schauer, who died ABT. 1938-1940 in Lebanon. John H. had has one son to Annie Kline. His name was Irwin Franklin Schauer. This is my line. Irwin was born in Lebanon and eventually moved to York. John H. was married a second and third time and had other children. Any connections?

Sioux Uprising/Minnesota

I am looking for info on a distant relative:
Do not know 1st name (though I think it Paul)
last name: Schauer, married to Emma Bauer(b1837-d1897), child (my GG Grandmother- Rosina Schauer (b1857-d1944), Rosina married a Wentlaff (I think August).

I was told the above Schauer died in the Sioux Uprising and that Emma remarried to an August Schultz. Can not confirm happenings or first name and/or death of Mr Schauer. If it is "Paul" he shows up on 1870 census. But there also appears to be more then one Paul in MN. It was told from Grandma Rosina to my mom Virginia Wentlaff that she remembers her father leaving to fight the Sioux in route to Mankato or St Peter and never returned. Fact or Fiction? Not good info either on death lists for this war, can not find one comprehensive list of victims.

Thanks
Terry Christle
