Additional informaton regarding surname Schaumburg/Schauenburg and castles with same name posted on the German Wikipedia at:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schauenburg

Note that several more castle ruins are mentioned (beyond those I mention in previous post). Also it notes that "Schauenburg" is the old version of the name "Schaumburg". Although Wikipedia listings are not necessarily authoritative - what I read here is consistent with my research.

Quote follows...

Simon Schaumburg born 1870 in Germany immigrated to the USA in 1892 with part of his family. His wife Anna Lindow (according to Death Cert. of Fred, it was Linda), had 4 known children:
William Albert 1894
Margaret Emily 1896
*Fredrich Simon 1898 in Iowa
Simon Herman 1900

*Fred married his first wife (not being sure what happened, if she passed away or if they divorced), he remarried Hazel Grove BELL in Iowa. They later moved to Texas. If any of this looks familiar to anyone please let me know. My husband (Terry) is wanting to know more about the only grandfather he knew. Though Fred is not biological, Terry had a great love for him, I know you will understand how he feels. He is definately proud of Fred. Thanks for your time. Deb

FYI - here is the response I received from the State Archives for Hessen, Germany, regarding the origin of the surname Schaumburg for those from Kurhessen. Very rough English translation follows the German.

The surname Schaumburg is common in North Hesse - you will probably be able to find no data with public records Marburg. It most probably concerns a normal Herkunftsbezeichnung for a family, which originally originated from the area of the counts von Schaumburg or from the medieval hessian court Schaumburg/Schauenburg west from Kassel. This court covered among other things the villages Elmshagen and Hoof. The today's municipality calls itself Schauenburg. The origin of the name cannot be examined from us.

Re: Castles named Schaumburg

Additional research I've done since posting the message above seems to continue to link "Schaumburg" as an old German version of the current word "Schauenburg" meaning roughly "castle with a good view", or as I've started to think of it a very loosely equivalent word to the english "watchtower" (only more like "watchcastle" if that word existed).

I've found these four references to castles called at one point "Schauenburg" or "Schaumburg". With no apparent connection other than the name.

- Die Schaumburg in Rinteln - home castle to the early Grafschaft Schaumburg

- Burgruine Schaumburg near Oberkirch, not sure if related to the Grafschaft, but doesn't appear to be

- Schaumburg-an-der-Lahn, not sure if related to the Grafschaft but again, doesn't appear to be

- Burgruine Schauenburg (I'm told was once "Schaumburg") near Hoof, which incidently is very near Kerstenhausen and Grossenenglis

So, while I thought the origin of the surname had to be related to to the ~1100 to 1640 A.D. Grafschaft Schaumburg territory or the resulting Schaumburg-Lippe territory, it seems now that maybe this is such a common designator of castles with a good view - that there are other possible origins.

Given the proximity, ours may be related to the Hoof Schauenburg. Take a look at:

http://www.gemeinde-schauenburg.de/freizeit_erholung/1_ausfl...
You mentioned "Die Schaumburg" castle that overlooks the Weser river. There is also a Schloss Schaumburg an der Lahn.

Does anyone know of any other castles named Schaumburg?

This is of interest to me since one of the stories that has come down in fragmentary form is that my Schaumburg ancestors (who were at Grossenenglis near Fritzlar in the 1700's and 1800's) did either live in a castle or have relatives who lived in a castle.

Your name is mentioned as is your Great Great Grandfather (Andreas b 1836 d 1917) your Great Grandfather (Riochard b 1872 d 1939) The family of Andreas considered that he had married beneath his station and was cut out of the will. They had 13 children. Do you have a son named Jamie born 1995?

Wes,

I received information from the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck for my subjects of interest. You may want to try their records as well if you haven't. Check:

http://www.ekkw.de/archiv/english/use_notes.html

Turns out several of the baptisms took place at the church in Grosenengliss. My Conrad Schaumburg was born in 1826 in Kerstenhausen. Looks like his wife, Catharina Martin was from Grosenengliss. May be related to your Henry Martin?

It's very difficult for me to read the old script, but it looks like Conrad's parents were (another) Conrad Schaumburg and Martha Trauman (? name very difficult to read).

Curious about any more Schaumburgs from the area you've found going back into the 1700's beyond those on your website. Also, I'm trying to trace the origin of that group of Schaumburgs vis-a-vis the surname and haven't made too much progress their yet. Any info there?

I am also doing research on Schaumburg ancestors from this area of Germany.

I have a birth town/village listed in several documents as either "Karstenhausen" or "Kestenhausen" which was apparently in Hesse (Kurhessen). The posting here that referred to a "Kreastenhausen" looked too similar to be a coincidence.

I am looking for verification of the correct town/village name. Google and German town searches have been fruitless so far in finding reference to any of these three variations on the name. Any help out there?

I'm interested in a Conrad Schaumburg who is most likely from that village. At least two of his children have it listed as their place of birth in US records.

This Conrad Schaumburg would have been born ~ 1829 +/- 2 years. So it is not the same Conrad that you have in your listings - however the prevelance of similar names is interesting.

His wife was Katharina Martin. Children born in Germany were: Jacob; Heinrich; Catharina; Maria; Elisa and Christine.

The history I have on the German side doesn't go back any further than Conrad right now. I'm hoping to find information on his father/mother,etc, and have not checked church records on that side yet since I didn't have the village name. Any additional info on where you found your Schaumburg church info would be great.

Thanks for the info. I've got additional info on the origin of "Schaumburg" as a surname too if you don't have that already...

SCHAUENBURG, Laurie/Laura

We think the last name may be misspelled.

I am trying to locate a Laurie/Laura Schauenberg born 2/15/71. She was born at St. Annes in Los Angeles, adopted out of Covina Adoption Agency, California. Her birth mother is Katheleen Francis Daniels, birth father is Richard Gerry McGarrigle. Her adopted mothers maiden name is Trier.

Laurie/Laura's birth name was Channette Marie Daniels. This is my sisters child who she had no choice in the adoption. Katheleen was 16 and our mother took the baby from the hospital before Katheleen woke up. Our family medical history needs to be given to her. Katheleen has M.S. and all the women have died of cancer.

Any help?

I'll post a message with what I have on the German origins of the surname at the top level of this message board.

Can you tell me whether your Schaumburgs in that area were found in Evangelical or the Catholic records? There is some uncertainty in my info regarding which church records I should search for my subjects of interest.

Thx!

Hesse town/village: "Karstenhausen" or "Kestenhausen"

I'm researching Schaumburg ancestors who were born in a town/village alternately listed as either "karstenhausen" or "kestenhausen".

I've searched the internet extensively and have yet to find any German town, modern or old, with a name similar to these.

The town/village referenced shoud be in Hesse, or Kurhessen. Any assistance identifying the current or correct former name of this town would be appreciated. Several Schaumburg's were born there in the early 1800s.

Thx

German origins of surname

My research has shown that the surname Schaumburg despite being literally translated as "foam castle" in modern German, actually has it roots in ancient German meaning "castle that looks over the land" as the namesake for the "Die Schaumburg" castle that overlooks the Weser river.

Transitions seem to be that in the earliest days (circa the year 1000) it was spelled something like "Scoenborg" or "Scowenborg", then transitioned to "Schauenburg" ("schauen"=to look, "burg"=castle), and then eventually today's Schaumburg.

There seem to be variations on this that still exist within Germany (Schauenburg, Schaumburger, etc.), and well as many variations that probably came about due to changes during emigrations from Germany.

If you do web searches on Scoenborg, Scowenborg, Schauenburg, and Schaumburg, you will get many German sites that explain much of this history, and the territories at points in time known as "Schaumburg". There is an enscription on the old stone tower at Die Schaumburg over the Weser with the old German version "Scowenborg" used.

I'm not a professional geneologist or a German history expert - but these are observations based on my personal web and field research. If anybody has more authoritative information I'd be interested.

Geographic Range of Schaumburg Surname in Germany

From what I have seen so far, it seems that the surname came from north of Kassel, in the area once called Schaumburg.

I am still trying to figure out just how widespread it is south of Kassel. It seems to be more concentrated in the area closer to Kassel than further south. However, there is also Schloss Schaumburg an der Lahn, which is well to the southwest. From what I have read so far, it seems that the castle was a relatively late extension from the northern Schaumburgs.

I still have far more questions than answers on this.

While I am interested in seeing the full spread of the surnames VAUPEL/FAUPEL and SCHAUMBURG in this area, the FAUPEL line that I am tracing is from Niederjossa and came to Canada and then the United States in the 1850's and 1860's.

The church records that I searched were at the pastor's home in Borken in 1981, when I visited there and searched them with the pastor and my sister. I think that there has been a gathering of the old records into a central archives since then, so that it may be that they are no longer in Borken.

I would be interested in what you have on the surname, since I do not have anything on that aspect.

I have to admit that my work on this line has been dormant for a while. But your query finally led me to look it up. Actually the town near Grossenenglis is Kerstenhausen, which you can find on MapQuest. (Unlike many other German town names, this one shows up with only one hit.) There you will see that it is very close to Grossenenglis -- even closer to Kleinenenglis.

So please tell who your relatives are who came from there, and we will eventually see if/how we all link up.
