Virgil Elmer Scheffler, the first of seven children born to Elmer Aaron and Martha Marie (VonDerHoe) Scheffler, was born May 31, 1925 on his grandfather Ferd Scheffler’s Stanton County farm northeast of Creston, Nebraska. He lived in Stanton County for a short time, moving to Madison County where he attended school at Creston, and graduated from the 8th grade at the little red country schoolhouse. He attended high school in Madison for several months before it became to cold to ride his bicycle the six miles to and from school.
At the age of 19, Virgil was drafted into the United States Navy. He was stationed in Guam and made two trips to Okinawa.
On October 4, 1945 Virgil was united in marriage to Lorane Hazel Flock at the First Baptist Church in Albion. Since Virgil was still in the service, he was shipped out for an additional nine months before being discharged.
Virgil and Lorane moved to Madison County where Virgil got a job as a janitor of a country school. They later moved to Albion where they raised their six children. He did carpenter work with Pete Paulson before going to work for Kansas-Nebraska Gas Company. Virgil worked along with his partner Bud Beckman was for the natural gas company for 36 years before retiring in 1987. Following his retirement, Virgil enjoyed carpentry work, building utility sheds, shooting pool, playing his guitar, painting, gardening, and fishing.
Virgil had been a Boy Scout leader as well as a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Albion where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, Custodian and served on the Church Board.
Virgil Scheffler died Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Bryan LGH East at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife Lorane of Albion; his six children: Dave Scheffler & wife Carol of Albion; Connie Nienaber & husband Bill of Lindsay; Guy Scheffler & wife Karen, Jim Scheffler & wife Linda, Cathie Bounds & husband Steve, all of St. Edward; Mike Scheffler & wife Theresa of Albion; 23 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Wayne Scheffler & wife Marion, Delbert Scheffler & wife Joyce, all of Norfolk; 3 sisters Marie Kimball & husband Wayne, and Brenda Scheffler, all of Norfolk, and Doris Hledik & husband Earl of Des Moines, Iowa, along with other relatives and friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Aaron Scheffler, and one grandson Levi Scheffler.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Albion with Rev. Blaine Pritchett & Rev. Tim Stahl officiating. Burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
