Wow. Hello cousin! Your English is just fine, so much better than my Spanish!
I have been working on this for years and this is the first information that may possibly make a major connection for me - for the both of us! I do believe that the Joseph you mentioned is the same older unnamed relative I heard about that tempted the brothers Jan Arnold & Herman to New York to be chemists. Jan Arnold is my great grandfather. He changed his name to John, became a pharmacist in Brooklyn and naturalized in 1904.

Our Hermans may indeed be the same person. Do you know how old your Herman was when he came over or what year he came over? Do you have all the names of the children of Wilhelm and Christine? I do remember hearing that because there were so many children, and there was mention of a farm, the boys came over to make their fortunes in New York with their uncle. I didn't grow up with the Schellings side, although my grandmother & mother (who both married into the Schellings) have been able to fill in some holes & answer a few questions. The rest of what I know I've discovered with this site.

Ship records for the SS Rotterdam list the brothers on the passenger lists landing in NY on 11 Oct 1893, aged 18 and 17. No family contact or other family names were listed. I have never been able to find parents' names. John's birthday is 16 Dec 1876 - died 25 May 1951 Miami, Fl. My grandfather, his son William John, was in college down there on the GI Bill. John married Winona Boehme Voullaire b. 13 Apr 1889 NY NY, d. 25 Aug 1932 in Queens, NY after an operation. She had been a singer, performing in churches and other social functions all over the city. Their children are Arnold B., Margaret, William John, John Arnold jr., Winona Marie and Mary.

My email is jsschell@comcast.net we can continue to share information & stories that way. I do have some pictures of my Schellings which as soon as I can get my scanner to work again I will post on my ancestry page - Schellings/Donneaud/Hammond/Magee. Once I have your email address I can invite you to my page.
Hello. I think you may be interested in a story about one of the Schellings from Nijmegen.

First of all, let me tell you that I´m a Spaniard and English is only a second language to me. Excuse me if I make any mistakes.

My maternal grandfather was Herman Schellings, born in Nijmegen from Wilhelm Schellings and Christine Frie (I don´t know exactly how this surname is written because I only heard my grandmother pronouncing it. This grandmother, María Luisa Valderrama was from Málaga, Spain, and she never spoke Dutch so I can´t be sure of the spelling. My great grandparents lived in Nijmegen and had, my grandmother told me, 18 children. I can´t remember the name of all of them. Some were Marie, Josephine, Hetty, Cato, Margaret, Cornell... One of the brothers of my great grandfather was a chemist and had a business in Brookly, N.Y. His name was Joseph. My grandfather Herman was sent to study to New York with this uncle and he eventually became an American citizen. He entered the public service in the U.S. Customs and was sent to the Dominican Republic that was, at that time, under U.S. administration. During one of his trips to New York he met my grandmother at the port while she was disembarking with some American friends who had invited her to their hacienda in Monterrey, California. Their eyes crossed and it was love at first sight. My grandfather forgot about the friends he was supposed to pick up at the port and followed my grandmother to the hotel where she would be staying for a few days, managed to be introduced to her, and when she parted to California, he followed her, asked he to marry him, she accepted and he immediately parted to Santo Domingo to make the necessary arrangements for the wedding. When everything was ready, my grandmother took her maid and travelled with her to Santo Domingo. The day she arrived, my grandfather was waiting for her and took he directly to Santa Bárbara church where the got married.

They were very happy together while it lasted. The had two children, a boy and a girl. My mother was born in 1910 and in 1914 my grandfather died from a thyfus epidemy. He was buried in the crypt of Santa Barbara church, in the colonial quarter of the city of Santo Domingo, very near the old walls. If you ever go there you´ll see a memorial stone with his name and the date of his death at the right side of the main altar. After my grandfather died, my grandmother, who had already lost her parents in Málaga, went to live in New York, but she missed her country so much that she went back to Málaga, and later came to Madrid with her two children.

The house that my great grandparents had in Nijmegen was bombed by mistake by the U.S. air force, who took it for a German town, during the Second World War. As you now, Nijmegen is very near the German border.

I´ve lost contact with that part of the family. Some of them came to Spain many years ago and I exchanged letters with Marie, the youngest sister of my grandfather, until she died.

So, who knows, maybe we´re relatives!

Any further information will be wellcome. I´d also like to learn more about that part of my own family.

Something else: I remember my grandmother telling me about some of the Schellings ancestors coming from Germany and I have a hint that they could be descendents of the German phylosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schellings (1775-1854). As a matter of fact, my great grandfather was named Wilhelm Joseph and had one brother Joseph and another Friedrich. Seems that they were family names.

OK, some corrections for my post here of Nov 2005. John Arnold Schelligns & Winona Voullaire Schellings had 3 daughters, Mary, Margaret & Winona-named for her mother but known as Nona. 3 sons, Arnold B (Boehme?), William John (Bill, my grandfather) & John Arnold jr. I believe Arnold B went out to California. Winona Voullaire Schellings did sing around New York but I am still looking for information about that & whether or not she sang opera for radio programs. Her father did indeed come from St. Louis, he was the son of Seymour Voullaire & Catharine Watt(s). Her Mother, Marie Boehme also came from St. Louis, born 14 feb 1854. The wedding picture I have is of Nona & Sy's wedding NOT Adrienne & Bill's although they are in the picture. I am still looking for ANY information on Winona Voullaire Schellings' singing & John Arnold Schellings' parents. I know he came from Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands emigrating to the US around 1889 at about the age of 14. Really any information about this branch of the Voullaire's would be appreciated, such as How did Francis & Letitia end up in Guadeloupe, where did they come from & how did they get into the US, there is no passenger record; Roz, I've lost your email to a computer crash. If you see this, send me a message to whymejs@yahoo.com I have come across more info & would still love to know what you have.

Hello! I apologize for not having responded to you. I have just started working on genealogy again.

I did find my great grandparents' marriage date. They were married on October 6, 1867 at St. Mary's Church in Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois.

There were several Schelling/Schilling families in the St. Louis area (including nearby counties in Illinois) from Switzerland. I am sorry, but all I have is the marriage index information for Barbara and Elizabeth, which you already appear to have.

There is a website for the Secretary of State, in which you can find some information on births and deaths, in case that would be of any help: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#...

I don't know if you have death certificates for Barbara and Elizabeth, but I just looked them up, and they are at this website. Both give their father's name as John, but mother's name as unknown.

Sorry I can't help you more.

Mary
i've new info (and some i'd already known) on my branch of the schellings. my great grandfather, john arnold & his father arnold both came from the Netherlands late 1880's-1890's. john arnold had about 5 children. 2 daughters became nuns, mary & margaret. son william is my grandfather (married adrienne donneaud), another son arnold jr., possibly killed in WWII. another daughter, winona named for her mother-winona voullaire. i am now looking for info on winona voullaire (was a singer for an opera program on the radio?) whose father may have come from st. louis later kids & grandchildren of the daughter winona & son arnold jr., if he had any. winona married sy farrell or ferrell. i believe they both stayed in the NY city area. i used to receive cards from nona & sy when i was young. my grandmother adrienne passed away last winter & i have some pictures, one of which is with non & sy on william & adrienne's wedding day. if anyone knows of these folks please share with me any info you may have? this side of my family is small & i would love to find them!

I believe we may have a connection. My gg-grandfather was John Marion Schelling. He came to this country about 1853. Per his obituary he had two sisters living in 1915: Elizabeth Schelling Thorn and Mrs. Fred Heihert. I believe that Heihert is actually Herkert. A Fred Herkert married to Mary appears in 1880 census. Its thin going but Mary was born in Switzerland so I think that I have the right person.

I have also attempted to e-mail you: I found your post on another board

My gg-grandfather was John Marion Schelling. He came to the US from Switzerland about 1853. At least two sisters came with him: Elizabeth and Barbara (Mary). Elizabeth married George Thorn and Barbara married Frederick Herkert. They were still living in St. Louis in 1915 when John died in Macon, Georgia. I believe there were other siblings who probably predeceased John.

He came to Nova Scotia in the 1890's (I think) He made his way to Rochester, New York, where he later married Maude Van Buren and became owner of the Rochester Tread Company. My father told us that he was one of nine brothers that come on that boat and that they disbursed around the U.S. and Canada.
Thanks for your reply. I am looking for information on Hans Jakob Schelling born in 1807, never emigrated to U.S. but his son Alexander {born 1841} emigrated in the 1880's. Alexader was married twice, first to Katharina Mueller who died, he then married her sister Ursula Mueller.
Katharina and Ursula's parents were Andreas
(born 1821) and Margaretha Vogolin (born 1822) Mueller. Both are from Gachlingen.
If this could help you or I, please reply at (schelling@altavista.com).
Thanks for your time.
Denise Schelling

Schelling family

My gg-grandfather was John Shelling (sic) of Monticello, FL and later Macon, GA. He married Caroline Clen (sic s/b Clem) (born 1843 in GA) in Jefferson, Co Florida on March 15, 1863. They are both buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Macon GA. John, a Civil War vet, served in Co I & B 1st FL infantry from 4/61 to 4/62 and then with Dykes Light Artillery from 62 thru the liberation of Andersonville Prison where he was a guard (at least there are favorable things said about Dyke's men). Some of their children remained in Macon, but one moved to Texas. John Schelling supposedly came from
Switzerland but I haven't been able to locate any information to substantiate this. Its possible that he lived in/came thru New York before ending up in FL. He was a cobbler and owned a shop in Macon on Cotton Ave. His grave does not list birth or death dates and I haven't found them in family records. I need to contact cemetery office to see if they have this information.
