Family of John Scherer of Scheren, Germany

John and Mary Scherer are my 3rd Great Grand Parents. I have traced back to them through my Mother's side of the Family (Schafer).
Nicholas Scherer, born in Scheren, Germayn June 1833 and his Brother Matthias Scherer landed in New York, in 1846. Nicholas was then 13 years old.
Nicholas married a Frances Uhlenbrock (Indiana).
Nicholas donated land to the Town of Schereville, Indiana and thus the town was name after him.
His daughter Anna Scherer, my Great Grandma, married to Nicholas Schafer. They had 10 children, Nicholas Jr. Edwar, Mary (Schiessle), Joseph, John (my grandfather) born October 11, 1882 (Schereville), Frances, Albert Elizabeth (Cromer), William and Clarence the youngest.
John Schafer married Anna E. Held, born Dec 6, 1884 (Chicago).
Mildred (my mother) and George were the two surviving children.
I am interested in finding out information on relatives who may still be in Germany or from Matthias branch of the Scherer family or relatives from Nicholas and Anna Scherer's off spring.

Christian SCHERER, b. abt. 1807, Prussia; d. poss. 1860-61, IA.

Christian SCHERER married Wilhelmine Meinhardt after 1845. Was he married prior to this marriage? To whom? Did he have children? Wilhelmine had four children in her first marriage: Theodore H. Meinhardt/Minehart b. abt. 1839; Ernest M. Meinhardt/Meinhart b. 1844; Catherine Meinhardt/Minehart, b. abt. 1845; and Mary A. Meinhardt b. 3 Oct 1846. Wilhelmine (Meinhardt) Scherer and her two youngest children were living with Christian Scherer in Lansing, IA in 1860 census. When did they get married? Where? Did he die in 1861? Where is he buried? Christian was a painter and his stepson Ernest was an apprentice painter. Please help me break down the brick wall.

Christ. SCHERER marriage to Chr. Wlhe. MEINHARD, St. Paul, MN 1858

I found a church marriage record for "Christ. SCHERER to Chr. Wlhe. MEINHARD," 09 May 1858, Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Paul, MN. I am wondering if this is Christian SCHERER and Wilhelmine MEINHARDT (my gr-gr-grandmother). 1860 census shows her living with Christian Scherer (2nd husband) in Lansing, Allamakee Co., Ia. He deeded house to her in Sep 1860, and she sold it Aug 1861. I'm thinking Christian must have died bet. 1860-1861. She was found in Atchison, KS, census in 1865, living with her daughter Mary (Meinhardt) HERTHA and son-in-law John HERTHA (aka John SCHILLING). I am seeking more info on Christian SCHERER, such as a previous wife and family, where he was born, immigration record, death record, obit, burial record. Also if you think you are related to Wilhelmine, I would appreciate your contacting me. What does the Chr. stand for? Thanks!

Old Photo of Catherine Scherer - Louisiana

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows several people on the beach of a lake. The photo is labeled on the back "Catherine Scherer & Eugenia Gray in boat, Larry, Connie & Gary Kelly & brother Kenny, Ponchatoula Beach Louisiana". I do not know when this early photo was taken. Maybe someone will recognize their ancestors.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If these are your ancestors, please contact me.

August Scherer PA & NJ

I am stuck on researching the parents of AUGUST (“Gus”, “Augusta”, “Augustus”) SCHERER in Pennsylvania & New Jersey. i HAVE BEEN STUCK FOR OVER 2 YEARS. Here is a brief summary of what I know:

1. AUGUST SCHERER married ANNIE ZINSZER on 9/29/1888 in Phillipsburg, Warren County, NJ

2. AUGUST and ANNIE had one child – Henry C. Scherer (b. 1890 W. Bangor, Northampton County, PA???) m. Viola Creveling

3. Census records & city directories place AUGUST in Phillipsburg, NJ as early as 1889.

4. Census records state that AUGUST was born in Pennsylvania and his parents are from Germany Wurtenburg?

5. AUGUST is buried in Allentown, Lehigh County, PA next the his wife’s family (ZINSZER)

6. I have checked for AUGUST on other census records (1870 & 1880) but they do not seem to match with the information on the later census records (1895 NJ – 1930).

Now my problem is that I cannot find any information on him before the City Directory of Pburg in 1889 & his marriage announcement in the local paper in 1888.

This is my husband's mother's family and almost all of them are dead.

I am looking for info on my husband's great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Scherer.
She married James R Harris born 1863 in Inwood IN but lived all his life in Plymouth Indiana.
I have no birth info for her think it was in the 1860's the year of death is abt. 1922.
Their first child Daniel Wesley Harris was born 1/7/1883 so they were married sometime before this. (my husband's line)
They had 4 boys and 4 girls.
Daniel's second son Richard told me

"His (James's) first wife was my grandmother and she passed away when I was only about 5 years old. (He was born in 1917)
I beleive that her name was Elizabeth (Scherer) Harris.
I do know that she was German and that she had a hot temper.
She requested that her children not come to her funeral.
She lived on the north side of our house and grandpa lived next to us on the south side, all three houses together.
I remember Gene and I standing with them all when the Hurse drove by.
They were all crying.
All 4 boys and all 4 girls were born in Plymouth. "

I have found James in the 1920 census for Marshall County IN but I don't find the three houses like he says.
His son John is on one side (not Daniel) and no Mary or Elizabeth on the other.

The only Scherer's I find on this board are from Schererville Lake county IN.
I wonder if she is one of them? Does anyone know?
I never realized the name Scherer in Schererville before,
I grew up in Griffith IN, my husband in Black Oak.

ANY help at all would be appreciated!
Jackie
PARENTS OF AUGUST SCHERER IN NJ & PA

I am looking for anyone researching the same SCHERER line I am. Currently, I am stuck on researching the parents of AUGUST (“Gus”, “Augusta”, “Augustus”) SCHERER in Pennsylvania & New Jersey.

4. Census records state that AUGUST was born in Pennsylvania and his parents are from Germany

If you have any connections please email me at flipporoots@earthlink.net
Need help finding info on my paternal gr-grandmother's 1st husband....Mr (?) SCHERER ! They were most likely married in either Union or Montgomery Counties, Iowa about 1890.

My gr-grandmother was, Florence Mary Clarinda WITHROW / WITHEROW. However, at the time of her marriage to Mr Scherer, she may have been going by her stepfather's surname of TRUSSLER. Her mother and stepfather resided in Creston, Union Co., Iowa at that time.

Florence and Mr Scherer had a daughter, Elizabeth Ada (a/k/a "Bessie" or "Ada Elizabeth"), who was born in Union Co, IA in 1891. It is unknown if Florence was widowed or divorced, but she and "Bessie" are listed together on the 1895 Iowa State census residing in Ft Madison, Lee Co, Iowa. Elizabeth Ada married to John W LEWIS and resided in Kenosha, WI when she died.

Florence later married to Frank Lynn BOYER circa 1896 and had 6 additional children. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

<patricia@merr.com>
Scherer of Atchison, KS

Wilhelmine Scherer is my gr-gr-grandmother. Her daughter Mary Augusta Meinhardt (b. 1846 in Germany) married my gr-grandpa John Hertha abt. 1862. My grandpa Louis Hertha was born to Mary and John in Atchison in 1872. I am unable to locate Wilhelmine Scherer on any census or immigration list. I have searched under Scherer and Meinhardt (and various spellings).

The only clues I have are that Wilhelmine had some connection with Wm. Barth of Denver, CO. In a letter of 1877, he wrote to a Mr. Kirchhoff in Kansas City, "I have known Mrs. Scherer and her daughter for years and also the son-in-law. I can believe that it causes Mrs. Scherer much apprehension and grief as she stands alone in the world." (Mary Meinhardt Hertha died in 1876). "Should it be her last wish and she asks for it, I will take over, and in that case she should simply make a last will and testament . . ."

In a letter in 1878 from Wm. Barth to Mrs. Wilhelmine Scherer in Kansas City, it indicates that he received her letter and "the money is not due until April 1 and can only then be collected." Mr. Barth also sends greetings from his wife.

I am familiar with Mr. Barth's history and know that he and his brother Moritz started out as shoemakers in Parkville, MO, which is not far from Atchison, and then went on to make their fortunes in CO.

I also have copies of photos from an album that Wilhelmine Scherer sent to her granddaughter in CO in 1877.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Wilhelmine is also connected somehow with the Meinhardt families in Atchison, KS, but we cannot prove it conclusively.

I have done research in the George Scherer and Johanna Durr (Duerr) family that originally settled in St. Joseph and Jacobs Prairie Minnesota. Three of the original children remained in that area--Blasius Scherer, Henry Scherer, and Annie Scherer Timmers. After George's death in 1896, Johanna and Katherine followed Joseph, Regina Scherer Kuntz, Magdelena (Lena) Scherer Wieber, Theresa Scherer Mayer.
All the children that went to Uniontown married out in Washington. Joseph moved to Idaho, and a few other areas of the country.
Looking for information on the 2 brothers of Magnus Scherer who came to the United States from Baden, Germany after an uncle took their property after father died. The 3 ended up in Missouri and 1 brother (deaf & dumb) stayed in Missouri and Magnus (my great grandfather) and his brother (who changed his name because of the draft) came to Ohio and settled into Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Erie. Magnus might have also been with either his wife or financee, Mary Mueller (poss. Miller) also from Germany.

Researching Scherer, Reitz, Bandelow

Researching Adam and Elisabeth (Reitz) Scherer.
Adam b. 9/30/1812, married ca. 1832
Widowed 24 June 1849. They were from Klein-Glaudenbach Granddutchy Hessen. I believe that is where Elisabeth died and was buried. Adam brought his family to Fond du Lac Co. WI in 1864 per New York Passenger List. At least two daughters, possibly three arrived before 1864. My gg-grandmother, Margaretha, married in 1863 (Charlie Bandelow), and she was in an 1860 Empire township census. Maria marreid Jacob Dilling in 1869 and moved to Washington State. The other children listed on the passenger list are as follows: Elisa. age 32, Cathar. age 24, Eva age 18, Adam Jr. age 15, Adam age 3. All are listed being from Kleingladenbach. I'm interested in sharing info with other family members. I know very little of the family in Germany. What information I have on the Reitz family is what I found through a Dilling relative in Washington state. Hope to hear from someone soon. My email is Warship1@ameritech.net and I live in Wisconsin, not too far from Fond du Lac.

Original Name of the SCHERER Family was GIRARD

A LETTER I RECEIVED:

The original name of the Scherer family was GIRARD, rather than Scherer.

This story which was told to me by Irene Scherer (who did the research of her husband Bernard's family) is that August Girard, came into America through Customs (Ellis Isle) and when asked what his name was, said "Girard". He had a French accent and the custom's officer heard this name as "Scherer" and spelled it as such. From this time on August went by the name Scherer. This is why every effort to trace the name "Scherer" always ended at Ellis Island. This was a frustration to Irene and all those who helped in her research.

No record of the second marriage of August Scherer could be found, nor could any record of the marriage of John Joseph Scherer to Louise Bohlinger be found, until Rita Scherer, examining the state records in Lansing, Michigan discovered that Louise Bohlinger had married John Joseph Girard, rather than John Joseph Scherer. To further complicate things, the children of John Joseph, who were married under the sirname of "Girard" were all baptized with the surname of "Scherer" and their father's name was recorded as "Scherer" -- or various spellings thereof.

The laws of the Catholic Church, at that time, required that an individual be married under his/her baptismal name. Thus, August and his children had to be married under the name of Girard, but could give their children the surname of Scherer.

Alsace Loraine was the home of August Girard in Europe. This territory changed hands often and was either a possession of France or Germany, depending who won the latest war over this land.

--BERNARD SCHERER
