Hey Jack (or cousin):
Thought I'd mention, my father (Leland A. Schiefelbein) died in 2005 of Leukemia. My uncle, Byron Benjamin Schiefelbein (he went by Sheffield after WWII) died 10 years ago of esophagal cancer.

I wouldn't normally have shared all our stories with y'all, but with my grammy, father, uncle (and grandfather as well) dead, I can only hope that the telling isn't too upsetting to anyone. I write. And I tell the truth. We didn't consider these stories secrets when I was growing up, so I don't see any harm in sharing them with 'family'.

Hope you check this site and see this update. I know it's been some time since you posted it.

God bless ~ Arlene

Re: Schiefelbein-Wolfgram

My grandfather was Engelbert (Benji) Schiefelbein. My grandmother was Hildred Applegate. My father was Leland Anthony Schiefelbein, 2nd son of Ben and Hildred.

You definately have all the right information! It was pretty cool to see all their names and dates. I still recall my father telling the story of his grandfather's death.

Dad said that he was well known for his drink (a family trait that he passed on to Ben) as well as his amazing physical strength (again, a family trait). He loved a bet. So one day, after a long afternoon of drinking, he went out and took the reigns of his horse and wagon, to head home. Someone had played a joke on him and had switched the reigns. The horse (or horses) went wild and took off on a full run, going over a train track and throwing great-granddad on his head and killing him. Have you ever heard that story? It's a legend in our family.

One more: Ben Schiefelbein took after his dad. My father told of how he once, on a bet and after much drink, picked up huge bags of feed in one hand, then the other hand as well, and finally a third one in his teeth...and he carried them across main street Hastings (300 lbs) and back...and won the bet. Another legend story we all remember.

Sadly, this side of my family is not our best. Ben attempted to kill my grandmother, Hildred, in California in the 50's. She had run there, away from years of abuse from my grandfather, with my dad when he was young. Ben was sentenced for attempted murder and given 14 years (if I remember right). My grandmother survived the attack, but spent the remainder of her life in fear that he would find her again. I never met Ben Schiefelbein; not a person held in high esteem in the family. But Grammy Schiefelbein (Hildred Applegate) was a great character! Wonderful sense of humor and I'm told, someone I greatly favor.

Thank you for your data and I hope that you found my family tales interesting. I know we always have.

Sincerely,
Arlene Schiefelbein

P.S. One other piece of info: Dad was born on the old Schiefelbein farm. I have a painting of it (by my father) in my living room. Dad said that Martin was unable to keep the farm running and after his death, Leocadia 'farmed out' most of the kids, including my grandfather, Ben. That experience was apparently quite dreadful and had a lasting, negative affect on my grandfather.

Last one: Ben Schiefelbein fell out of a hay loft in his youth, taking the impact on his head and hitting a metal stake, or nail head. Leocadia grabbed him up and stuffed his head into the flour bin, in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Her efforts saved his life. However, he lived the remainder of his life with a terrible temper (when drunk, which was daily) and it was the cause of his loss of self-control the day he attempted to kill my grandmother. Just another amazingly interesting testimony about our family. You have to admit, pretty impressive...albeit sad.

P.S.S. I didn't know I share the same birthdate as my great-grandmother Leocadia...Dec 9th. Pretty cool. Thanks for that!

Arden,
I hope this message finds you......I believe I may have some information on your Bertha. I have been researching Schiefelbein / Schievelbein rather extensively and believe I have pieced together that the Bertha Schievelbein you are looking for may be one I found in Guadalupe Co, Texas who's family traces to Birkholz, Kries Dramburg, Pomerania. She was married to a Carl D. Koepp. I would be curious what additional info you may have discovered since your last post.
My research on the name is broad in scope, but this line is of particular interest to me as my family also comes from Kries Dramburg. This line is at this time unrelated to me.
Thanks,
James

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I havn't been on here in a looooong time. Ventura, know the place well. My Uncle Carl, and his wife Francis, who passed away in mid 80's, I believe, used to live on one of the first blocks on the main hiway that goes into town from hiway 18. Anyway, thanks for the reply, and maybe I'll look here more often now, John Schiefelbein.

Paula,
I have only a little on Johanna which is taken from her grave marker. Johanna Louise Panke b. 4/8/1830, Schoenfeld, Kreis Dramburg, Pommerania married Christian Schiefelbein b. 10/18/1825, Pommerania. Johanna died 4/2/1892 in Wisconsin. Christian died 8/5/1898 also in WIsconsin. They had 8 children that are known. Since that posting to which you responded, I have tracked down the elusive Leonard and his family in MN. I have very extensive records on most of there children's families. That brings me to a question, where do you fit in? I have 7 generations, and more people than I can count, yet I do not think I have you in my tree. Please send me any info that you can so I may locate you on the appropriate branch.
I look forward to hearing from you,
James

Please contact me directly at my posting address (click on my name).

I'm looking for ancestry info on my grandfather HAROLD SCHIEFELBEIN. I believe he was born in Wisconsin. He married LILY MARIE SCHWARTZ in the early 1920's in Illinois where she was born. They lived in Champagne, IL for awhile then moved to Milwaukee where they remained. They had 5 children, 3 daugthers and 2 sons. They divorced in the late 50's and he passed away in October of 1962. I know he had at least one sibling but I really don't know anything else about him. I would love to hear from any family and all info will be greatly appreciated!
Hi Your post is pretty old but if you're still looking, please email me. My grandmother was Lily Marie Schwartz and married Harold Schiefelbein in the early 20's in Illinois. They moved to Milwaukee where both passed on.

I can't be sure if this is who you're looking for as I don't know the given names of my great-grandparents. That's the information I was looking for when I found your post. I do know they were farmers in, I believe, Iroquois County near Watseka, IL, where they raised 8 children.

Even if this is not who you're looking for, please let me know you saw this reply.

Laurie

My grandmother seems to believe there were Schiefelbeins who were somehow connected to our family throught our Steffen side. Do you have any more information about your Steffen? Even if it is not from Milw., maybe they are connected somehow. You may contact me at jhkamine@cs.com if you find anything. Thanks.

SCHIEFELBEIN

I am searching for info. on my SCHIEFELBEIN ancestors. My father was Robert August Schiefelbein(JR). He was born in Chicago, IL on Apr.25, 1933. He married Shirley Glovier. My grandparents were Robert August Schiefelbein(SR) & Esther Leone Hoose. Robert SR was also born in Chicago, IL in 1894. My ggrandparents were Theodor(e) Schiefelbein & Augusta Tesch(Tisch). Both were born in or near Berlin, Germany. Theodor was born Jan 1867 & Augusta was born Nov. 1862. Their eldest child, Elsie, was also born in Germany on Feb. 1890. They came to the US in 1891. Augusta was missing a hand due to blood poisioning. When coming through immigration she was given the baby to hold so they would not notice her missing hand. After arriving in Chicago, IL they had 4 more children. I believe there was also a baby or child who may have died. If anyone has any info. I would appreciate it. I get as far back as Theodor & Augusta & that's it. I think Theodor may have served in WWI. I have his original discharge papers but they are extremely difficult to read because of age. Karen

The relative who gave me my info. doesn't know of any. Any relatives who might be of any help have passed away. So I'm really not sure what to do next. I am still pretty new at this research stuff.

I am researching my great grandparents. They were from a town right outside of Berlin, Germany. My great grandmother was Augusta Tesch. She married Theodore Schiefelbein & they had a daughter Elsa or Elsie. They came to the states in 1891 to Chicago, Illinois. I'm not sure if there was already family here or not. They sailed on the Weimar. I believe there was a history of blood poisioning in Augusta's family. She had a hand removed from right around the wrist area down. When she came through immigration She held the baby so it wouldn't be noticed or she would have been sent back to Germany. I really don't know much else about her. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Please contact me if it does.

I'm responding to your note for two reasons. First, I'm researching my grandmother's family line which has the Schieffelbein (sp variation) name and secondly, because I was born, raised and married in Ventura, Ia. My husband is from Clear Lake.

My grandmother's line comes from from William Schieffelbein, born 1863 at Gruneberg, Brandenburg providence, Germany. He came to American when he was 21 years old and settled in various locations in North and South Dakota. William married Anna Louisa Quardt from Tracy, MN. Both William and Anna Louisa are buried in Minot, ND.

I have checked my grandmother's papers and do not show any Otto or Ruby (Rudy) in her family line but will get with her to see if she has any information. I will also contact my father to ask about Carl who lived in Ventura - the town only has a population of 600 people (a small town farming community) - so my father should have known him.

Marla Gray

No, I didn't get an answer yet. One person tried to find the obit. but couldn't. I also sent a letter to the hospital & the cemetary. I do have the death certificate which is where I found the info I have. I'm not sure what to do next. Karen

Germens from Russia Schiefelbeins

I'm looking for Schiefelbeins who came from the Volga river area around Saratov Russia. My Grandfather was Joseph and he came here in the early 1900's fleeing the "work" camps of the revolution. Any distant cousins out there?
