Interesting ... I have a Catherine Jung married to Martin Weybright who I believe immigrated to America with my Schmelzer family in Sept 1738. They immigrated into Lancaster, PA then to Montgomery, OH and later a younger generation ended up in Elkhart, Indiana. Later, Elizabeth Weybright b. 1813 Montgomery, Miami, OH and daughter of another Martin Weybright / Weybrecht marries Jacob Schmelzer / Smeltzer b. Sept 1805 Maryland and they end up in Indiana as well.

There is another Smeltzer line in old Frederick County, Middletown, Maryland (not mine) that has several Valentin's in it. I think my line also has at least one Valentin as well but we can't document that one yet. We have an active researcher on that line working with the group of us.

Y-DNA .... that would be absolutely great. Tell him that we already have the line of Johan Sebastian Schmelzer, the classical composer and contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, from Austria, documented in our family Y-DNA project. We also have a Schmelzer line from the Chicago area and pointing back to a Wigand Schmelzer b. abt 1620 in Stephanshausen, Nassau, Germany documented well and we have the Schmelzer line of Jacobus Blazius Schmelzer b. 1794 Ombau, Bavaria, Germany documented as well through Y-DNA.

Your's would be a wonderful addition to the Y-DNA project. I'm the project manager and can help with details. I'd encourage you to participate through the family project at Family Tree DNA but that's not required of course.

Hi John,

Well since posting that message, I was able to look at the baptism and confirmation records from Beindersheim (LDS Microfilm). The information I had was from a description of my family in Schlegel's set of four books (can't remember the title at the moment) published in 1917. No information on how they gathered the information, but I have now found that the parents listed for my great-grandfather in the book are wrong. The names listed on the baptism and confirmation records are Johannes Schmelzer and Elisabetha Jung who married 14 Jul 1836 in Eppstein, Pfalz. The names of my great-grandfather's siblings were correct, though the dates of birth were slightly off. I have one male Schmelzer cousin who I'm going to talk to about the DNA testing at Thanksgiving. Maybe we can get more information then. Thanks for replying.

I am searching for information about George Schmelzer (b. 1859 in Germany) and Sophia Saelzer Schmelzer (b. 1869 in Bonfeld, Germany) who probably resided around Pottstown, Pennsylvania, near her sister Louise Saelzer Stirnberg and niece, Alvina Selzer Stirnberg Kerper, in the 1930s. I would appreciate any leads or information that you can provide. Thank you.

Re: Anselm SCHMELZER-2 (Jacob Blazius-1) m. to Margarethe KELLER

 I have been very lucky on this line. Many of the Schmelzers of this line still reside in the Geneva and Bremen area of Ohio where Jacob Blausius Schmelzer settled. The family tradition is that they came to the U.S. (about 1838-1840 from my best recollection) to avoid military conscription, a period later than the Hessian soldiers.
This family has links to Burgoberbach, Ornbau, and Arberg (on the Altmuhl River. These villages are clustered in an area south of Ansbach. I have attached a Google-Earth so that you can see their locations. I have not seen previously any link to Leutershausen.
Prior to my first trip there I sent three separate letters to the priest at St. Nicholas Catholic Church over a period of a year and received NO reponse from him. He doesn't speak English.
But when I showed up at the church door he made copies of church records from the 1700s on his copy machine! While there I also met a distant very distant kinswoman, Karin Sauer, but she does not do genealogy. On our return trips to Burgoberbach we have invited her, her mother and other Schmelzers in the village to dinner.
Another family member is working on Schmelzer genealogy at Burgoberbach and it is he who has traced it back even further than what I received from the priest ... but he does not have a computer, nor an e-mail address and he does not speak English ... so I can only communicate with him when I am there with Karin at my side because I do not speak or read German.
I do not have any known link to anyone (Schmelser or otherwise) in Kentucky ... but then, it does appear that your family immigrated much earlier than mine.
I am getting ready to send a Christmas gift to Karin, if you want to e-mail a copy of what you have I will include it in the package. My e-mail address is wolfhaus@txcr.net.
What other family names are linked to your Schmelzer line in Germany, or very early in this country?

You've done extremely well over the years adding to your ancestry.

John, one of the SMELSER researchers, contacted descendants of Jacob SMELSER, who was in Hart County, KY (his and my line). Without prompting, two stated their family has a story that they are descended from a Hessian Soldier. The two men who deserted in Virginia who were from the Ansbach/Bayreuth troops could be to whom we are linked. They came from Leutershausen, which is a little less than 17 miles from Arnbau. Both locations are on the Altmühl River.

Would you please share where and what records you found for Jacobus' ancestry?

Anselm SCHMELZER-2 (Jacob Blazius-1) m. to Margarethe KELLER

Descendants of Anselm Schmelzer

Generation No. 1

1. ANSELM (Anslum/Absolam)-7 SCHMELZER (JACOBUS BLASIUS-6, JOSEF-5 SCHMOLZER, ANTON-4, WILLIBALD-3, JAKOB-2, SIXTUS-1) was born March 29, 1831 in Ornbau, Bavaria, Germany, and died June 24, 1872 in Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio. He married MARGARETHE KELLER October 30, 1854 in Sacred Heart Church, Geneva, Fairfield, Ohio. She was born August 31, 1831, and died November 17, 1873, presumably at Bremen, Berne Township, Franklin County, Ohio.

Notes for ANSELM (Anslum/Absolam)SCHMELZER:
During the American Civil War, Anselm (Absalom) enlisted in Company C, 62nd Infantry Regiment, Ohio, on September 23, 1864 as a private at age 35. This unit was initially organized on Sept. 1, 1861 and mustered on Sept. 1, 1865. During the period that Anselm was enlisted the regiment fought the following battles:

Battle Near Petersburg, Virginia on 23 September 1864;
Battle Near Richmond, Virginia on 9 October 1864;
Battle at Darbytown Road, Virginia on 13 October 1864;
Battle at Hampton, Virginia on 13 October 1864;
Battle at Richmond, Virginia on 14 October 1864; Battle at Chapin's Farm, Virginia, on 01 April 1865; Battle at Fort Gregg, Virginia on 06 April 1865;
Battle at Rice Station, Virginia on 06 April 1865;
Battle at Petersburg, Virginia on 02 April 1865;
Battle at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on 09 April 1865.

Jean Schmelzer gives Anselm's date of death as June 24, 1872. Other records have shown 1899.

More About ANSELM SCHMELZER:
Burial: St. Phillips Cemetery, Berne Township, Fairfield, Ohio

Notes for MARGARETHE KELLER:
Anselm (Anslum) SCHMELZER and Margarethe (KELLER) SCHMELZER are buried in the St. Phillips Cemetery in Berne Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. In the same cemetery is buried Joseph Keller b. 1808, d. May 31, 1861 and Elizabeth Keller d. April 11, 1864. These could be her parents but more research is needed. Birth date for Margarethe is based on date given on tombstone.

More About MARGARETHE KELLER:
Burial: St. Phillips Cemetery, Berne Township, Fairfield, Ohio

Children of ANSELM SCHMELZER and MARGARETHE KELLER are:
i.	MARY LORETTA8 SCHMELZER, b. October 05, 1855.
ii.	PHILUMENA FRANCES "Minnie" SCHMELZER, b. October 15, 1856, Logan, Hocking, Ohio; d. October 01, 1904, Washington, Daviess, Indiana; m. CHARLES CHRIST, Bet. 1874 - 1876; b. Abt. 1850, Alsace, France; d. Aft. 1900.

Notes for PHILUMENA FRANCES SCHMELZER:
Jean Schmelzer has Minnie's birth date as Oct. 22. The birth certificate may be in error or perhaps Oct. 22 was the Christening date. In the 1900 federal census, Minnie said that she was 40 years old on her last birthday which would make her born in 1859 rather than the 1857 year shown on her death certificate.

Her death certificate clearly states her birth date as Oct. 15, 1857 and that she was 47 years, 11 months and 15 days old. But if she died 14 days before her birthday, she would have turned 48 on Oct. 15, 1904 had she lived and that would calculate as a birth year of 1856 ... so she would have turned 44 (not 41) on her birthday in 1900. Maybe she just wanted to shave a few years off her age when talking to the census taker.

Notes for CHARLES CHRIST:
According to family tradition Charles was born in Alsace/Elsass and came to the United States to avoid conscription. His birth date and birth place are not known. In the 1880 census for Corning, Perry, Ohio, he claimed that he was 30 which would indicate that he was born in 1849 or 1850. In that census he also claimed that he was born in Germany.

Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, Alsace remained under the control of Germany until the conclusion of WWI in 1918. Alsatians who immigrated to the U.S. would sometimes answer “France” and other times “Germany” when questioned about their place of birth by the census takers. Charles Christ may have answered the question in 1880 on the basis of who was currently in power in 1880 and had been for nine years.

iii.	LAYMAN HENRY SCHMELZER, b. 1858.
iv.	MARY ELIZABETH SCHMELZER, b. December 19, 1859.
v.	SUSAN ANN SCHMELZER, b. March 06, 1861; m. JOHN MICHAEL FREEDNOUR.
vi.	MARGARET HELEN SCHMELZER, b. January 01, 1862; d. November 28, 1863.

More about MARGARET HELEN SCHMELZER:
Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery

vii.	JOSEPH SCHMELZER, b. 1864.
viii.	BENJAMIN SCHMELZER, b. 1867.
ix.	SOPHIA SCHMELZER, b. 1867.
x.	LEOPOLD SCHMELZER, b. 1869.
xi.	JACOB SCHMELZER, b. 1870.
xii.	FRANK SCHMELZER, b. 1872.
My "batteries" are recharging and its time to get a summary out to all.

I do think that I can safely say that this was the FIRST family reunion in which multiple family lines of the Smelser-Smeltzer clan attended .... at least with this many distinct family lines. Here were the family lines represented at the gathering.

Paulser Smelser b. abt 1720-1730 - aka Johannes Balthasar Schmelzer
Johan Adam Schmelzer - b. abt 1755 - aka Adam 1755
Johannes Jacob Schmelzer - b. abt 1760 (Brenda's "Old Jacob") :-)
John Schmelzer (Smelser) - b. abt 1780 - aka John Smelser 1780
David Schmelzer - b. 1776 - aka David Smelser 1776.

I believe we had in-total 25 family members from these lines in attendance. Unfortunately health issues, gas prices and the terrible flooding in the Midwest U.S. kept many others from attending. We extend our prayers to those with illness in the family who could not attend and to those impacted by the flooding. I'm not sure we can do much about the gas prices!

Our plans on Thursday June 12th were to participate in a day of research activities on-site at the brand new Mid-Continent Research center just a few miles from the motel. Unfortunately construction delays caused in no small part by extreme weather kept the facility from being open while we were there. We had scheduled the event at least 45 days beyond the originally scheduled opening in anticipation such delays but missed by about one week. Several of us did drive by the facility and must say that it will be a great venue to visit. They have included family rooms in which groups can gather to do just exactly what we had contemplated.

So, in lieu of the research day we did spend a very productive day just getting to know each other and discussing our Smelser - Smeltzer family connections, sharing stories and exchanging materials. I think many of us finally left the room provided us by the Best Western at about midnight. A long and wonderful day.

Day two found us trekking to historic Fort Osage on the Missouri river. Fort Osage was established in 1808 and operated as part of the "Factory" system created by the U.S. Government to compete in trading with the Native Americans along the frontier. The future site of Fort Osage was first recorded on the journey of Lewis and Clark and recorded as a "good place for a fort" in their journals. Later, Clark returns to help locate the spot, design the fort and oversee its construction. Fort Osage operated as a working post until the early 1820's when it was abandoned with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail and the trading that it afforded. Mike, the local historical interpreter did a great job of explaining the history and operation of the fort in character as both the story manager and later on in the visit as a blacksmith. He even created a small, hand-made screwdriver and gave it to "Tex" - aka Brenda (Smelser) Hay. He said something about her having a screw loose! We can neither confirm nor deny that allegation!

In the P.M. the group broke into two groups with one touring the Harry Truman Library and some of the associated attractions in Independence and the other visiting the historic Jackson County Jail (temporary home of Frank James) and partaking of a very nice little German restruant across from the jail and then going to the Pioneer Trails Museum where Cathie Wilson ran into a Gregg family member who was serving as a volunteer at the museum.

And, after an evening meal we all gathered back at the Motel to continue our discussions and fellowship once again late into the evening. We did note that the Paulser Smelser descendants were "early to bed early to rise" types. We wonder if that is a family tradition of long standing or something more recently invented by Lawrence Smelser, our senior Paulser family member in attendance! I think there is a research question in there somewhere!!

Day three found Cathie and I up early and quickly gathering all of the necessary items to hold a family picnic. Charcoal, hamburger, brauts, hotdogs, buns, ketsup, mustard .... plates, knives, forks, napkins ....... oops ........ forgot the matches! Well, one out of 43 isn't bad. But, the fire finally got started.

We held our picnic gathering at the Fleming Park which is part of the Jackson County, Missouri Park system. We had reserved Jacomo 14 as our private picnic area and were not disappointed. The weather was absolutely PERFECT. No wind, crystal clear skies, low humidity and virtually NO BUGS. We all commented that the "Schmelzer" clan in the great beyond were all pulling their weight making the day just about perfect for everyone in attendance at this first ever reunion..and for that (and many other things) we thank them. Oh, and one little thing to report on myself .... well I think it was a little thing at least .... I careful drew up maps for everyone to help them get to the picnic venue. Ooops.....I guess that "right turn" should have been a "left turn". Thats why I never went into engineering or cartography! The good news is that everyone found the spot BEFORE all of the food was consumed.

After the picnic many of the group said their goodbyes and thank yous and took their leave. However, a handful of intrepid and spirited attendees continued on to the recreated 1855 Missouri town housed within Fleming Park and had a great time experiencing the feeling of a hot summer day in 1855 Missouri. A time and a feeling experienced by many of our ancestors.

So, that's a summary of the event. We will be finalizing the collection of photos taken at the event soon and will come up with a way to let you all see them.

On behalf of "All Things Schmelzer" ......... thanks to all of you for helping make this a successful event.

With great respect to all Schmelzer's both present and past,

John F. Smeltzer
Fort Collins, Colorado
Milo, I am very interested in Conrad Schmeltzer and his third wife, Charlotte M. Do you have any information on them? I can't seem to find Conrad and Charlotte after 1900 census where they are enumerated in Tualatin Precinct, Washington Co., OR,

I think Charlotte M. Schmeltzer could be the one who was married to Samuel Haskin in Antelope County, NE. Samuel Haskin died 1892 and Charlotte disappeared right after his death. I have been looking for her.

Well I am very bad at this. I just started. My own dad can't give me any info because he does not remember. BUT.... I do know that John Conrad was from Oregon. They had a Schmeltzer Road and Homestead over there. John had many children including my grandpa Joseph Donald. I know that Joseph Donald married my grandma Sara Ruth Flannigan in 1945 I think. My dad Joseph Blair was born in 1947. Now I do know that in 1949 my grandpa Joseph Donald was killed in a tractor accident in Oregon. My grandma then was forced to move back to Washougal, WA to live with her mother. Anyhow I an hoping to get more info from my aunt, Carrie Anne my dads sister. Hopefully we can match up!
Thank you so much!
Amy

Karl Schmelzer---who were his parents?

I am looking for more information on a Karl Friedrich Schmelzer. He was born in April of 1849 and died in July of 1914, I believe in Germany, or in present-day Denmark. He was married at least twice. Karl Schmelzer's second wife was Josephine Mahl (1855-1933). She too had been married before. I do know that the children of Karl's first marriage (spouse unknown) were Ida, Karl, Helen, and Christine. In Karl's second marriage, to Josephine, they had two children, Karla and Dorothy. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to trace back Karl Schmelzer's line and do not know the names of his parents.

Barbara's story is an amazing one...and her 2nd husband's is nearly stranger.

I've gotten my information from Perry and Fairfield County records, graveyards, lots of info from Barbara's Great Grandson Dwight Kellenbarger (who is alive and well in Bremen just a few minutes from the site of where Barbara (maiden name Schorr) and John Lived when he shot her) and pictures galore.

There's lots of Schmelzer, Kellenbarger, Funk, etc. stuff on my online tree at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~ricknlida/

Tell me who you're interested in and I'll send you anything else I might have...

My interest is first in her 2nd husband Joseph Kellenbarger. Does anyone know more of this mysery man who was really Joseph Stormer...and who had left a wife and family in Germany to come here? His German wife came over here at some point after her 3 Kellenbarger boys were born and when Barbara figured the scoop she gave him the boot and he was never heard of or about again.

My 2nd interest is in Blasius Schmelzer. Is he Jordan's father? No doubt most of you know his "perilous voyage" story and his promise to the Lord for his safe deliverance...

Just click on the "S" on my online page...I've got 38 Schmelzers descended from Barbara Schorr-Schmelzer.

Anyone heard anything more about her 2nd Husband?

Let me know if you want any pics or further details on any of the ones I've got.

And please share URLs if you have info online.

Thanks!

Rick.
(married Barbara's Great Great Granddaughter Lida Downey)

Schmelzer Family Rheinpfalz/New York

I have a direct line history, written in 1917, going back to the 1500s. I currently do not have any back up documentation, so am looking for any confirmation or additional information anyone might have.

First information is of two brothers, Casper and Valtin Schmelzer. Casper was born around 1550 in Frankenhausen. I am decended from Valtin.

The direct line information I have is as follows:

Valtin's son Adam born 1553.
Adam's son Michael born 1596 (married Catherina Fasshawer).
Michael's son Jacob born 1631.
Jacob's son Johann Heinrich born 1657.
Johann Heinrich's son Jacob born 1685 (married Anna Maria Aderhold).
Jacob's son Johann Christoff born 1719 (Jacob and Anna Maria also had Maria Elizabeth 1720; Johann married Anna Maria Ficker).
Johann Christoff's son Christoff born 1748.
Christoff's son Georg Christoff born 1772 (wife's last name Raquet)
Georg Christoff's son Friedrich Georg born 1797 (in Beindersheim)
Friedrich Georg's son George born 1845 (Friedrich and his wife Anna also had Abraham, Anna, and Katherina)

George married Mary Schneider in 1871, and we're fairly certain of most of the family history after this.

If you have any information about sons, daughters, brothers or sisters that match any of this information, I'd love to hear from you.

Heidi

Interested in your Karl Sch Messate #10 of Nov. 5. Wonder where you obtained your information and from whom? I've been an interested observer of this family - the "middle person." I don't see any mention of the family's descendancy from Johann Heinrich, a baroque musician in Vienna in the 1600s. Please e-mail me at plschm@gte.net if you're so inclined.
