Understand he married & had more children. Not looking for anything, just trying to fill in the gap of his life and maybe gain insight. Miles was born 1922, West Frankfort IL, died 1995, Riverside CA.
Thanks, Linda Lee Allen Stecker
Johann Martin Schmid and Magdelene Frei are my gggrandparents. They did have one more child -their oldest child named Adeline Smith (my great grandmother). Adeline was born June 18, 1840 in Switzerland. She married Joseph Keiser on April 6, 1863 in Wisconsin. They moved to Tama County Iowa in 1867 and then to Sac County Iowa in 1876. They farmed. Their family had 11 children: Edmund, Ida, Albert, Ralph, Mattie, Agnes, Adolph, Walter, Maud, and Austin (my grandpa). A daughter Clara died in infancy. Adeline died November 11, 1917 and is buried in the Wall Lake Iowa Cemetary.

Hello Brett and Angi,

I recently purchased an antique wooden trunk from a Lansing area antique shop. What makes this trunk unique is how clearly the trunk’s original owner (“Joh: Georg Schmidt”) and original purpose (“Auswanderungs Gut” or “emigration good/property” in German) are scrawled on the face and lid of the trunk. Such trunks were widely used to store emigrant’s personal belongings on sea voyages from their native countries to the United States. For some time, this particular trunk had been owned by a Lansing, MI family unrelated to the trunk’s original owner.

In short, the piece is a real heirloom. If you or your family have an immigrant ancestor to whom this trunk may have belonged, please let me know. I intend to sell the trunk, but am a family historian myself and would like to connect with a potential descendant, if possible. For more information, pictures, etc. please contact me directly at justinrfast(at)gmail.com.

Thank you!
Justin

Exterior Description:

The trunk measures 33.6” x 18.25” x 15.75” at the lid’s peak. It boasts original black outer finish, metal strapping, edging, and handles. It is very worn, but in original condition.

Painted in an ornate script on the front face of the trunk is:

Joh: Georg
Schmidt

On the lid is painted:
I.G.S.
Auswanderungs
Gut
Nro. 89

(The lid’s text is extremely faded, but still legible.)

Interior Description:

Two layers of interior paper (one, a brown and white floral print and the other, wax paper) were badly deteriorated at purchase. Most lay in a heap in the center of the trunk. The wood underneath appears to be in good condition. On the inside center of the lid is a hand-illustrated floral frame in pinks, blues, and greens. The remnant edges of someone’s handwriting are still visible along the frame.

SCHMIDS of Illinois

Hello. I am searching for information on the SCHMID family of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. What I have is:

John SCHMID, born 1871 in Alton, IL d. 1947 Edwardsville Il

+ Lena STEEHLINGER b. 1880 in Edwardsville IL d. 1966 in
Macoupin COunty, IL. She was the daughter of Lena
THEUELE and WIlliam STEEHLINGER.

1 - Edward William SCHMID b. 1919 Edwrdsville IL d.
died 1990 in Lake County FL

+ Marceil Virginia THOMAS b. 1919 in
Maryville, IL d. 1972 in Edwardsville IL
She was the daughter of James THOMAS and
Mary GILMOUR.

I read a post in another forum from 2000 that John SCHMID's parents both died when he was young and the siblings were split up with different "caretakers." John was placed with a George GESSERT but kept his own last name. I DID find him in the 1900 census with GESSERT listed as a servant. I cannot find him in any census before that. I am really seraching for his parents!

I might be able to help. But this to could be a long shot. You mentioned the name Klett with Schmidt. My Husbands great great grandmother wad Ada Schmidt Klett. Ada married Frederick Klett. Ada was born Mar 1879 in New Canaan CT. Ada's father was Charles Schmidt born on Oct 1849 in Prussia Germany and died in New Canaan CT. There is a picture of the grave stone on my tree. Charles Schmidt married Rachel Saunders. They had 6 children Ada, Annie, Karl, Robert,Oskar and William. Oskar and William are both buried in New Canaan CT. The name Saunders goes very far back in the late 1600's in Pound Ridge New York. I don't know who Charles Family was or any siblings. Let me know if this helps at all.

When Johann Schairer and Bertha had children, they had Ella (1888-1964) Helena I. "Lena" (1889-1995), Louisa (1891-1970) and Aaron (1895-1952). Louisa had 4 children Hilda, Raymond G., Elmer C. (1921-2010) and Carl E. Von Hofe. Carl E. Von Hofe is my grandfather. My grandparents Carl and Neva Von Hofe took care of my aunt Lena for a little bit of time. I remember my aunt Lena very well. I wondered if you knew any of the Von Hofe family. Susanna Rubin was their mother b. 10/25/1851 in Switzerland, and Jakob Schmid, 8/24/1839 was their father. They had other siblings Hans, Susanna, Gottfried, Rosa. My grandfather Gottlieb married Helen Walter in Phoenix. They had 4 children, my dad is the oldest and will turn 88 in a couple of weeks. There are also two aunts here. I hope you do get this and reply back.
Nancy Schmid

How very neat!! I would love to see any documents, stories or pix that you have. Unfortunately, I have no pictures. A lot was thrown out when Casper's wife (my grandmother) died. Her name was Nancy and her son was my dad, Ronald. I will scan some docs I have like Casper's birth and death certificate. He was buried at The Woodlawn Cemetary at 233rd st and Webster Ave in New York City. I also have some unidentified pix that perhaps you might be able to identify. When I saw the picture of Caroline Knapp on the passport application, I thought she looked like the person in this photo I have. Do you have an email I can contact you at?

Re: Casper Schmid

Let me clarify. My grandfather, (Casper's brother) Frederick Rulolph Schmid is the same person listed as Fritz. We have a letter from the church dated 1909 that has his name listed as Fritz Rudolph Michael Schmidt.
If you are having problems looking this family up, it's because they were always on the move and changing the spelling of Schmidt!! It appears that my father and his brother are the only ones that kept the spelling of Schmidt with the T.
The passenger lists has Casper and Frederick's father listed as Heinrich Schmidt, which was later americanized to Henry. In various cenus reports, sometimes the t is there and sometimes it's not.
This family also moved between Philly and Rochester before finally settling down in Newark.
I would love to have you scan and email some old pics if you have them. I am in the process of making up an ancestor album for my father (he's 90). I have so little pics from this side of the family.
If you want, I can scan and email a pic of Frederick so you can see how much alike they look. They could be twins!
My dad does remember Casper and says "He was quite a character!" I'll ask him if he remembers his wife and son, just give me the names.
Do you by chance know where Casper was buried?
I'm just so excited to have found some long, lost relatives! I do have quite an amusing story to share about Julia, the snake charmer if you want to hear it.
Thanks!
