Looking for Father

My fathers name was Walter Schmidt, he was a GI during WWII and based in Germany around 1945 in Munchberg by Hof, his mother and father came from Hannover or Kuhln Germany and he was said to have been born on the ship that they came over on, around 1918. He was supposed to be their only child. His parents were supposed to have settled either in New York or St. Louis and they operated a business, probably a bakery of some type. I have not been looking for him because I was afraid of the possible rejection and even now I have second thoughts, but I would like to know where my family came from and more about my fathers side of the family.
