Not sure if it'll ever be of any help to you or not but I have same-name ancestors: Friedrich Augustus Schmidt, b. 3/29/1833 in Altenbreitungen, Saxony m. Anna Cordula Konigshof b. 5/15/1839, Frauenbreitungen, Saxony. I believe I may have seen this written as Hesse-Darmstadt region? Arrived in US 4/26/1861 on SS Ottillie from Bremen to NY. Settled in Niles, MI. They parented 7 children, including Friedrich Christian Schmidt b. 1858. Sorry I can't tie together more than that but we could find a common relative back a generation or two in Germany.
