not related - for board info

Schmit, Joseph

JOSEPH W. SCHMIT Beloved father of three, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2008, at 85. His beloved wife of 55 years, Robin Yarmuk Schmit, preceded him in death on June 4, 2007. They were married in Los Angeles on August 26, 1951. Joseph W. Schmit was born August 28, 1922, in Lewistown, Montana. He was the son of the late Joseph M. Schmit and Constance Dougherty. Mr. Schmit graduated from Montana State College in Bozeman, with a BS in Chemical Engineering in May 1944, and as member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. After graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve. He served as gunnery officer on the USS LCI(R) 646 in the Asiatic-Pacific area until the end of WWII; awards/medals received include the Philippine Liberation and World War II Victory. He was later captain of the LCI(L) 715, and was released to inactive duty as Lt (jg) in September, 1946. Lt Joseph Schmit retired from the USNR in 1964. He attended graduate school at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California from 1947-1949, and received an MS in Chemical Engineering in June 1949. Joe Schmit joined Technicolor in 1949 and held various positions in Research, Technical, Control and Technical Services Departments. He was Assistant Technical Manager and Assistant to the Corporate Technical Director for standards and specifications. He was a consultant in the motion picture and related industries from 1977 until 1984 when he rejoined Technicolor. Joe retired in 1988 but was called back a little more than a year later as the Technical Director of Optical Printing, and continued there until 2002. He was a technical expert on the Technicolor Imbibition Process (aka the dye transfer process) used on movies such as The Ten Commandments to Disney's Swiss Family Robinson. In 1959, Joe was a member of the Technicolor team to receive an Academy Award (Scientific or Technical Class Two Award) for the development and practical application of equipment for wet printing (which prevented reproducing scratches from the negatives onto the film prints). A patent was awarded to Joseph W. Schmit in 1961 as co-inventor of the projection printer used in wet printing. He was a life fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and a senior member of the Society of Imaging Science and Technology. Joe was active in the Boy Scouts for over 75 years, since he joined as a Cub Scout in Lewistown. He was involved in numerous scouting leadership activities including serving as pack and troop committee chairman, WoodBadge training, Silver Beaver, Order of the Arrow, and over 40 years on the Catholic Committee on Scouting (CCS) for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, at one time serving as Chairman. The CCS awarded him the St. George Emblem in 1970 for significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in Scouting, and the Msgr. James E. Dolan Award in 2003 for his many years of dedication, service and support of the CCS and Catholic Scouting. Surviving are a daughter, Diane Schmit, of Hanover, Maryland; and two sons, Michael, his wife Phyllis and daughter Stephanie, of Cupertino, California, and Richard of Fontana, California. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Garrity of New Hyde Park, New York, and Suzanne Healy of Portland, Oregon. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 3, 2008, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with Vigil and Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Crawford Mortuary, 8717 Tampa Ave., Northridge, CA 91324. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 4, 2008, at St John Eudes, 9901 Mason Ave., Chatsworth, CA 91311. Burial will follow at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Catholic Committee on Scouting in Los Angeles (www.ccsala.org).
Published in the Los Angeles Daily News (CA.) on 2/1/2008.
==============================================
Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Lewistown,
Fergus, Montana; Roll: 1255; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 2; Image: 657.0.

Name Age
Joseph M Schmit 41
Constance Schmit 35
Joseph W Schmit 9
Mary C Schmit 5
Margeret Heald 16 (servant)
===============================
I am trying to find my father's mother. Her name is Clara Schmidt. I have heard that her maiden name may be Fox, Davis or Schmidt. I found the name Clara Schmidt on an old medical paper belonging to my father. He was born in Cincinnati along with his brother and sister. His name is James, brother, Victor, sister, Glenna. Their father's name was Kermit Robbins. I have heard several stories about their relationship, but all I know for sure is that the three children grew up in Robbins, Tennessee. I don't know if they were married or just lived together.
Searching for a daughter of Henry Schmit who was born in to an unknown woman. Henry was born in Luxembourg, married Emma Schlentz and had a daughter, Goldie Schmit on March 24, 1907.

In the same time period or after, he also had a daughter with the unknown woman.

Goldie was told that she had a half sister years after her parents died. It was a family "secret" and I am trying to find any information of this woman who would be my Great-Aunt.

If anyone has information, please contact me.

Thanks, Jo Janson Wills
