Johanna Schmitt

I am having a lot of trouble finding any info on my grandmother. Her maiden name was Johanna Schmitt, she was born in 1927 in Germany. She married a US soldier (Samuel Hursh). They had a son while in Germany in 1948 and came to the US 6 months later in 1948. Basically I hit the wall at Germany, I can't find any info on her birth, her parents, siblings, or her immigration to the country, anything like that. Does anyone have any ideas?

St. Louis Schmitts

My great grandfather was John (called Jack) Schmitt from St. Louis, Mo. He was born around 1867 and died in 1951. I am looking for any pertinent info as very little is known about this branch of our family. His first daughter (Lillian Schmitt) was born in 1889. I am not sure if he was married to her mother (Kate Leicht) or not. If he was, they divorced soon after her birth because he and his second wife, Clara (maiden name unknown) had a daughter (Leona Schmitt born about 1902). I know the second daughter, Leona, married a man named Edwin C. Haack. I have no other info on the Schmitt side of the family and would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows more than me!

Henry Schmitt - St. Louis - B. 1864

Looking into the ancestry of Henry Schmitt, my wife's g-grandfather. The information I have is that he was born on June 24, 1864 in Missouri and died on 24 Sep 1927 in St. Louis, MO. (Oddly, he is not in the Missouri SOS death certificate database, but he is buried at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in St. Louis.) He was married to Mary Heinzer about 1896. He also apparently had a daughter named Amelia from a previous marriage who was born in Aug 1889. He had a brother named John R Schmitt, born in 1883 and died in 1961. The only information I have on Henry and John's parents is that they were both born in Germany based on the 1900 Census.

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows 20 students with their teacher in front of their school. The photo is labeled "High 7th Grade W. Van Zandt School Texas March 12, 1923". On the back of the photo is written "Josh Schmitt". There are no other markings on the photo. Maybe someone will recognize one of their ancestors.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If one of these is your ancestor, please contact me.

POW/MIA, Korean War, SCHMITT

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Moniteau County, Missouri as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: HERBERT H SCHMITT
Born: May 2, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Schmitt family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Helen--
I am so excited in finding your query regarding the Schmidt/Schmitt family from Hessen, Germany. My 2-great grandmother is child #6 on your children on Andreas Schmitt and Catharina Wahl. Looks like Catharina (b. 3 Oct 1832) is the sister of your great grandfather, Philip.

I had Catharina's surname spelled SchmiDt, believe from her marriage to Anton Rheude. I knew she was from Hessen, Germany, and had her birth date (which might be her christening date) as the 25 Oct 1833. So you can see why I am so excited in finding your query. I did not know her parents or her siblings. Now I do!!!!

Please let me know your source for your research. May I include it in my notes? Also, do you know or have any information regarding her husband Anton Rheude? I believe his full name is Philippus Anton Rheude, born in Hoerdt, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, christened 24 Oct 1823. If that is correct, then I have the rest of his heritage several generations back.

I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you for posting this information!!

Sincerely,
Mary Utschig Read
Can anyone access passenger lists for ships from Germany to New York City in 1888? I am trying to find my great great grandmother, Karolina (Lena) Schmitt. She is said to have left Germany on December 10, 1888 and arrived in NYC on December 24, 1888. I would like to know the name of the ship and whether or not she was traveling with anyone. She was originally from Steinach an der Saale, Bavaria and she settled in Syracuse, NY. Thanks.

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 896.

LANCASTER

ANTON SCHMITT, proprietor of the Phelps House; was born Nov. 4, 1830, in the village of Dexbach, Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Briel of the same place, who was born March 15, 1829; they emigrated to this country in 1854, and came to Lancaster June 10, the same year. Mr. Schmitt is a farmer and miller by trade; he bought a farm in Section 2, town of Beetown, on which he lived until April, 1855, when he purchased of J. Allen Barber a grist-mill and farm in the town of Lancaster, called Grant Mills, which he operated and tilled the farm until 1869, when owing to poor health he sold the mill and moved to the village of Lancaster; in 1870, he engaged in the general merchandise trade, which business he carried on in Lancaster and Fennimore until January, 1876; in 1870, he bought 28 acres of land in the village of Lancaster on which he built a dwelling house and other improvements, planted a vineyard of 2 acres, orchard and small fruit, which he has cultivated successfully in connection with his other business; is one of the first and most successful grape and small fruit growers in this part of the county. Has six children - Louise, born in Germany, Dec. 20, 1852, now living in Dutch Flat, Cal., married to J. E. Knott; Caroline, Aug. 18, 1855; Carl, April 20, 1857, died Jan. 2, 1870; Adolph, born April 25, 1859; Amelia, Jan. 12, 1861; Elizabeth, March 20, 1863; Veronica, Oct. 8, 1865; the four daughters and one son are assisting their parents in their present occupation. Mr. Schmitt has passed all the chairs in the I. O. O. F., and has been a member of the lodge for twenty years; always been in active business life, and self-made.

[I am not related to this family.
George Schmitt and Margaretha Wetterich of Wisconsin

Everything about George is unknown. All I know is from the records of his sons, mainly Martin. Martin was born in Osaukee, Washington County and baptized in Nenno (same county) in June and July 1859 (respectively), so presumably George lived in that area at this time. However, by August 1860 Frank was born allegedly in Milwaukee, which is not exactly nearby. The 1860 census has a George and Margaretha Schmitt in Washington County (Trenton), but Marg. is 59 years old, not exactly of child-bearing age. To complicate things, son Martin (who would be 1) is not listed in the census at all, implying that the family may have been skipped. George Schmitts in other areas do exist, mostly in Milwaukee, so the possibility of Frank truly being born in Milwaukee does exist. A George Schmitt of Barton in Washington County did enter the Civil War in 1861 and died in 1864, and our George would be of fighting age. However, no George was found in Barton in the census, so this is only a guess. In fact, the only Schmitt family in Barton in 1860 was allegedly Erlitz Schmitt's family, so is not an individual I have ever encountered.

I am looking for any Schmitt family descended from Frederick and Barbara Schmitt. Fred came from Osthofen Germany in the 1850's and had a brother Matthaus and two sisters. Some descendants have taken the Smith name but there are some Schmitts left. They lived in Wabash County-some might have moved to Indiana. If you recognize any of this information--please let me know!

Adam Schmitt

Searching for info on my 3x great grandfather, Adam Schmitt. I don't know his year(possibly 1815-1835??) or place of birth, but my 2x great grandmother (his daughter) was born in 1871, in either New York or New Jersey. According to family "stories" Adam had 3 wives and a total of 23 children. Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) his third wife, had 8 children Elizabeth (Lizzie), John, Mabel, Josephine (my 2x great grandmother b.1871) Amelia, Celia, Kate and Phillip. Many of these children ended up living in the Jersey City area. Josephine married Domenic Buongiorno, and after his death James Corbin. The Schmitt name may have been changed to Schmidt or Smith. Thus far I have been unable to find a birth record for Josephine, which I hope will have a few more clues for me to go on. Any help greatly appreciated!!!

I have a Margiretta (Margaretha?)ROOS (Rose?) who married a Jacob SCHMITT, 07 Apr 1833, Waterloo, Waterloo Co., Province of Ontario, Canada.
They later moved to Illinois and then Missouri and I can help anyone with the history after the marriage BUT I need help before and at that time. Who were the parents/siblings? From where? What church did they marry in? Mennonite? Lutheran? Catholic? (Sweden? Germany? France?). She immigrated with family at age 14 from where she was born: Dettwiller, Alsace but was that in France or Germany at the time?
There are many ROOS' and some SCHMITTs buried in cemeteries in Waterloo but the indexes give no dates and this was pretty early in the settlement of the area.
Any Help would be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance
Patrick Scoggin
jscoggin@nmsu.edu
I am looking for a Joan Schmitt who is my mother-in-laws birthmother. The only information I have is she was young when she gave birth to a daughter on Dec. 2 1936 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in the Villiage of Rockville Centre in Oceanside, New York. We seem to think that she was from Wisconsin, and she was staying with a sister who worked at the hospital where she delivered. The birthfather deserted Joan, so we are not positive if they were married.
She was adopted by Milton and Alice Ehlers.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

Fred Schmitt, Commander of Spanish War Veterans, Dies at State Convention

While attending the 38th annual encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans at which he presided as state commander, Fred J. Schmitt, 61 of 416 Cornelia street, co-proprietor of a local plumbing shop died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the Milwaukee Veterans hospital after having suffered a heart attack in convention headquarters at the Schroeder hotel Wednesday morning. Mr. Schmitt was not well when he left Janesville but because of his duties as head of the Wisconsin division of the U. S. W. V. he went into Milwaukee Sunday with his wife and daughter, Joan.

Following the annual election of officers earlier in the week Mr. Schmitt was presented with a jeweled badge for meritorious service, as department commander. The presentation was made on behalf of the veterans by Mr. Schmitt's brother, William T. Schmitt, Janesville.

Born Jan. 21, 1876 in Lamars, Ia., Mr. Schmitt came to Janesville in 1893 when he became associated with the McVicar Plumbing company. In 1919 after he had served as manager of the federal employment bureau following the World war, Mr. Schmitt and Alfred Jerg formed the partnership of Jerg and Schmitt, operating a plumbing and heating concern at 119 North Main street.

Mr. Schmitt became a member of the U. S. W. V. through his service with Company A, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish-American war.

<This is part of an article published on page one of The Janesville Daily Gazette (Rock County, Wisconsin) on Friday, July 23, 1937.
