Clara M. Rutten, daughter of Peter and Camilla (Lachnit) Schmitz was born on August 31, 1902 at Lindsay, Nebraska. She was the third oldest of thirteen children, and the last of her brothers and sisters. Clara was baptized at the St. Bernard Catholic Church in St. Bernard and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She received most of her education at St. Francis Academy in Columbus. She then attended one year at St. Anthony’s school in Cedar Rapids until the seventh grade.

On January 3, 1923 Clara was united in marriage to Martin L. Rutten by Father Vermullen at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. To this union nine children were born. They farmed in the Cedar area until retiring and moving to town in 1965. Martin passed away on July 3, 1977. Clara lived at her home in Cedar Rapids until 2003 when she entered Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.

Clara passed away on Monday, August 28, 2006 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion at 103 years of age.

She was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, along with the altar society there. She was also an original member of the Fatima Club.

She is survived by five children: Angela Koziel of Omaha, NE; Rita Watts and husband Robert of Cedar Rapids; Marlene Wilson and husband William of Merriville, IN; Veronica Pfeifer and husband Harold of Cedar Rapids; Raphael “Ray” Rutten and wife Barbara of Omaha, NE; son-in-law Orville Robinson of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law Ernie Rutten of Cedar Rapids; 40 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 36 great-great grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 children: Georgia Robinson, Maurice Rutten, Charles “Chic” Rutten, and Mark Rutten; 7 brothers; 5 sisters; 4 grandchildren: Tom Koziel, Dennis Foland, Marty Robinson, Nancy Rutten; 1 great-grandson Christopher Watts.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Fr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will continue at the church after 7:00 p.m. with wake services at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will resume Thursday from 8:30 until 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
