Nicholas Schmitz in Chicago, IL m. Elizabeth C Foerster

I'm curious if there is anyone who has any more information about Nicholas Schmitz born about 1867 and who came from Germany about 1887. By 1920 he was living in Chicago with wife Elizabeth Foerster and 4 children, Mattias, Arthur, Florence and Alphonsus. He also shows up on the 1930 census. I'm curious about his parents and where in Germany he came from. Thank you for your help.

My SCHMITZ's and SMITH's from Prussia to Wisconsin

I don't have to much info to go on. But my SCHMITZ line starts with a Theodore SCHMITZ, b. abt 1804(?) in Prussia. I don't know if that was his middle name or given. Theodore married a Anna Maria, also from Prussia. While still in Prussia they had two daughters Mary A. b. abt 1841 and Elizabeth Louisa (my gg-grandmother) b. abt 1843. THe family immigrated to La Crosse, Wisconsin (as far as I know). There Theodore and Anna Maria had children, John abt 1845, Julia abt 1849, twins Franklin and Joseph abt 1852, Henry abt 1857 and George abt 1860. Theodore looks to have died est 1859-1870. Ana Maria never remarried. Her children that I know married, were Elizabeth to John J. Cole (Prominent Lawyer of La Crosse) and Franklin to Rebecca Lee. Either the family changed the surname SCHMITZ to SMITH, or it just ended up being that way. Frank and Joseph worked on the railroad. This is basically all i know of this family. I'd like to find out about their family history in Prussia and the descendants of Elizabeth Louisa' siblings, death dates of the parents, etc. Any relatives recognize this family please contact me. Cousins are always welcome. Any help is appreciated.

Peter J. Schmitz of Lorain and Mercer Counties, Ohio

I hope this biography helps someone. So far, I haven't found a connection to this Schmitz family.
Jeanne

History of Mercer County, Ohio, and representative citizens
by S. S. Scranton 1907
page 740
Peter J. Schmitz
Peter J. Schmitz, whose excellent farm of 103 1/2 acres of well-cultivated land is situated in Gibson township, was born in Lorain County, Ohio May 21, 1862. He is a son of John and Mary Ann (Pfiefer) Schmitz.

John Schmitz, father of our subject, was born in Germany, April 3, 1817, and still survives, being probably the most venerable resident of Sharpsburg, Gibson township. He came to America in 1844 and settled in Lorain County on property that his father had purchased. After his marriage, he bought a farm in that county on which he lived for some 20 years, leaving it to remove to Mercer County in 1864. After selling the old farm, he bought 80 acres in Gibson township, this being the farm now owned by our subject. On this he erected a log house which is still inhabited and later bought 80 acres adjoining. Still later he added 50 acres more, situated in Darke County. He was considered a very judicious business man during his active life.

John Schmitz married Mary Ann Pfeifer, and they had eight children, namely: Maggie, who died aged 11 years; John, a wagon-maker, whose home is in Oregon; Joseph, a resident of Gibson township; Jacob, who lives in Minnesota; Gertrude, the wife of Joseph Remanklus, of Jay County, Indiana; Emma, wife of David Schlamp, of Gibson township; Peter J., of this sketch; and an infant that died unnamed.

Peter J. Schmitz was two years old when his parents brought him to Mercer County and was reared in Gibson township. He learned the carpenter's trade and followed that in connection with farming. He has many improvements about the place and in 1905 he built a large, convenient barn for his use. He carries on general farming.

On August 17, 1886, Mr. Schmitz was married to Elizabeth Leiser, a daughter of Frederick and Mary (Agler) Leiser. Frederick Leiser came with his parents to America from Germany. when seven years of age, his parents settling in Tuscarawas County, where he married when grown to manhood. He had 13 children, namely: Valentine, who died in infancy; Philip, who died aged five years; Katie, wife of Patrick Reedy, of Darke County, Ohio; Mary, wife of John Bright, of Dayton, Ohio; Elizabeth, wife of our subject; Charles, of Canal Dover, Ohio; Martha, wife of Englebert Schmitz, of Dayton; Anna, wife of William Camper, of Dayton; Maggie, wife of Peter Rummel, of Granville township; John, a teacher in Gibson township; Carrie, wife of Benjamin Hulsman, of Gibson township; William, a teacher in Gibson township; and Lawrence, who died aged four years. Mrs. Schmitz was 12 years old when she accompanied her parents to Mercer County.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schmitz moved to Oregon, where Mr. Schmitz bought 40 acres of land, on which they lived for seven years and then came back to Mercer County. They have nine children; Frederick William, Mary Anna, Ursula, Emma, George, Henry, Lawrence, Charles, and Gertrude. Mr. Schmitz and family are members of St. Paul's Catholic Church at Sharpsburg, of which he is one of the directors.

Herman J. Schmitz of Seneca Co., Ohio

I'm posting this biography in the hopes that it will help someone. I haven't found a connection to this Schmitz family.
Jeanne

History of North Central Ohio:
embracing Richland, Ashland, Wayne, Medina, Lorain, Huron and Knox Counties
by William A. Duff
published in 1931
pages 1363, 1364
Herman J. Schmitz
As proprietor of the Schmitz Cement Product Company, of Ashland, Herman J. Schmitz is prominent throughout North Central Ohio. He was born at Alvada, Seneca County, Ohio, Nov 22, 1897, the son of Nicholas and Margaret (Reinhart) Schmitz.
Nicholas Schmitz was a native of Seneca County, Ohio. Throughout his life he was interested in general farming and stockraising and owned a well improved farm in Seneca County. He retired in 1914 and removed to Fostoria, Ohio, where he died April 10, 1922. His wife died in 1924. Both are buried in St. Peter's Cemetery, near Alvada. They were members of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and Mr. Schmitz was a Democrat. There were nine children in the Schmitz family, as follows: Nicholas, died in infancy; Charles, retired, lives at Fostoria; Tillie, married Nicholas Kirian, lives near Alvada; Romey, lives near Fostoria; Minnie, married Martin Blechinger, lives near New Riegel, Ohio; John, lives on the old homestead near Alvada; Nora, married Joseph Faber, lives near Alvada; Robert, lives at Fostoria; and Herman J. Schmitz, the subject of this sketch.
The boyhood of Herman J. Schmitz was spent on his father's farm in Seneca County and he attended the district schools. He took correspondence work in mechanical engineering, and at the age of 17 years went to Fostoria, where he spent three years in the employ of H. J. Adams. He later operated a garage in Fostoria, which he sold in 1918 to enlist for service in the World War. He was sent to the University of Cincinnati to study automobile mechanics and later was stationed at Valparaiso, Ind., as an instructor in motor transportation. He was discharged Dec. 15, 1918, and upon his return to Fostoria reentered the employ of H. J. Adams. Later he conducted a garage business at Tiffin, Ohio, for 18 months, after which he spent two years in business with his brother, Robert Schmitz, as proprietors of a cement products plant in Fostoria. Mr. Schmitz sold his interest in 1924 and came to Ashland, where he engaged in the manufacturing of cement products. A branch plant of the Schmitz Cement Products Company was erected in Mansfield in 1928. The company specializes in the manufacture of cement blocks, cement tile, trim stone, etc., and also manufactures a complete line of Selco and Haydite units. In August, 1930, Mr. Schmitz introduced a new composition on the market, which he has termed "Stone Age." This new product is almost as rigid as marble and is manufactured in all colors, to be used in bath room finish, floors, and table tops. It was perfected by Mr. Schmitz after several years of study and experimental work.
On June 17, 1919, Mr. Schmitz was united in marriage with Miss Marie Elizabeth Cook, of Fostoria, the daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth (Eischen) Cook. Mr. Cook was born in Germany and died in Fostoria, Nov. 12, 1918. His widow, a native of Wyandotte County, Ohio, resides in Ashland. Mr. and Mrs. Schmitz have one son, Francis Joseph, born June 11, 1930.
Mr. Schmitz is identified with the Democratic party in politics. He is a member of the Catholic Church and belongs to the American Legion.
I'd love to make contact with anyone who is descended from Nicholas Schmitz and Catherine Minnich who came from Germany to Ohio. I mostly have information on the family line of their son Stephen but I think they had another son named Anton and daughters named Emma and Anna Sophia. In 1870 they were in Lorain County, Ohio. Stephen married Emma Weber and their sons spread out into Henry County and Paulding County, Ohio and to Michigan and New Mexico. Anna Sophia married Peter Raab and lived in Lorain County, Ohio. The names of the other two children are from census records. I think Nicholas was a stonemason in the sandstone quarries in Amherst, Lorain County, Ohio.

SCHMITZ/Germany/OH/PA

Trying to locate information about my father's family, if anyone can help or has a connection please reply. The difficult part about this is that my information is somewhat sketchy and the names are common rather than unusual.

John Schmitz immigrated to the US from Germany. I have a page from his original naturalization papers dated 1890 at the Probate Court of Youngstown, Mahonning County, OH. That is the only piece of "hard" evidence our family has for this man.

I found a census for 1900 in Allegheny, PA it has a John Schmitz b. 1850 immigrated abt 1879. The census shows a son Joseph who was born in OH it says age 13 but the dob on the census looks more like 1884 than 1887. In addition, listed on the census are John's wife, Anna b. 1853 in Germany - a daughter Mary A. born Aug 1881 in Germany which may be difficult to explain if John immigrated in 1879 and John and Anna were married for 24 years at the time of the census. That length of time wouldn't indicate that Mary might have been from a previous marriage. Then there is another daughter Francis born Mar 1892 OH. If this is someone else's Schmitz family and not mine it would be most helpful to know that - I'm grasping at straws right now.

I have a photo of a woman that I believe was Joseph H. Smith (Schmitz) mother - it is one of the post card type and was taken in Cleveland, OH the back is inscribed "To my son Joe, Love Mama".

Joseph Henry Schmitz (Smith) was born 13 Mar 1884 according to his WWI draft registration which I located on Ancestry. He married Hazel Louise Thompson sometime before 1915 and I believe they split up around 1920. (My father, Robert Clayton Smith, was born in Philadelphia 13 Aug 1915.)I do not know when Joseph and Hazel were married and if they were married in PA or perhaps Ohio - she originally lived in Columbus.

I do not have a date of death for Joseph Henry Smith but I know he was probably living in Philadelphia, PA with his second wife, Pauline (no other information about her).

Roberta

Schmitz families in Lorain County, Ohio

My line of Schmitzes, as I understand it, going back, is as follows: Theodore Albert Schmitz (1884-1962) and wife Elizabeth Bischoff; his father Stephen Schmitz (1844-1911) and wife Anna Elizabeth "Emma" Weber; his father Nicholas Schmitz and wife Catherine (maybe Minnich?). Theodore Albert, my great-grandfather, was born in Henry Co., Ohio but died in Lorain Co., Ohio. Census records indicate that Stephen and Nicholas were born in Germany. Stephen died in Lorain Co., and I would guess that Nicholas did, too. I think I found Nicholas in the 1870 census listed as Smith, and his age is 53. It says his wife Kate is 58. There's also an Emma, age 23, and an Antone, age 19. The birthplace of the two younger children is Germany, so if this is accurate, they came to the US after 1850.
There are other Schmitz families in Lorain County from Avon and Sheffield Townships. I've always heard that we were all related, but I haven't yet found out how.
If anyone connects to this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Interested in finding family information for Gertrude Schmitz, born abt. 1832 in Prussia. Came to US, Wisconsin, married a Joseph Merten in FondDuLac Co., Wis. in about 1858, had 3 children. Merten died, then she married August Utschig, 1864 in Marshfield or Marystown, etc. They had 6 children, born in Mt. Calvary and Marystown. Anyone familar with Schmitz families of this area?
Schmitz family from San Francisco

Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone out there sees any connections to the following Schmitz family that originated from New York City, spent a few years in Portland, Oregon and then settled in San Francisco, California.

William Schmitz (born about February 1846 in Prussia) son of Joseph Schmitz and Adelheid Rothkopf married Elizabeth Linder (born about 1853, New York City - died 1898, San Francisco) daughter of Martin Linder and Jacobine Kennel on October 4, 1874 in New York City.

The children of William Schmitz and Elizabeth Linder included:

1. Minnie Schmitz (30 Apr 1879, Portland - 22 Mar 1946, San Francisco)
2. Joseph Schmitz (born May 1880, Portland)
3. Louis Schmitz (born Aug 1881, Portland)
4. Mary Schmitz (born Dec 1883, San Francisco)
5. Charles Schmitz (born 31 Oct 1885, San Francisco)

There was also another son Anton Schmitz (born 23 Oct 1871, New York City) whose birthname was Anton Gluckler as Elizabeth Linder was previously married to a certain Anthony Gluckler who died before her second marriage and it looks like William Schmitz adopted Anton as he was recorded with the last name of Schmitz for all of the records that I have found for him. I have also seen his first name spelled as Antoine.

Minnie Schmitz married a certain man from Scotland named Alexander Rannie (born about 1871) around the year 1904.

Charles Schmitz married a certain lady named Ethel D. Williams (born 14 Jul 1892, Pennsylvania)

Anton Schmitz married a certain lady named Jessie (born August 1874, Iowa) around 1895.

The Schmitz family worked with pianos, were listed as piano makers and piano tuners. I also believe that William Schmitz (Feb. 1846, Prussia) had a brother named Joseph Schmitz (born about 1852 in Prussia) who also had a family living in San Francisco during the same time period, who also worked with pianos.

If anyone sees any connection to any of the above family members, I look forward to hearing from you!
Possibly there is a Schmitz family in the Chicago area who descends from a child of William C. Duggan and Ruth Eleanor Gallagher, who were probably married c1925. I am tilting at windmills, trying to find a living descendant in the overall Gallagher family.

I am researching the Gallagher family of Glanworth. One of the descendants married a Schmitz in Chicago, IL. This family would trace back to Edmond Gallagher and Catherine Casey born in Ireland, and married probably in the 1830's. I have been trying to find the person in this extended family who put their Glanworth Gallagher information either on Ancestry.com or Family Tree Maker. Because I am also researching the Glanworth Gallagher family, I would love to be in touch with the Shmitz family who descends from Ruth Gallagher (Glanworth Gallagher descendant) and William Duggan. The Gallaghers settled in Clyman WI. I am hoping there is someone from that family who checks this list.
I am searching for the Schmitz brothers that left Beho, Belgium or Luxembourg for the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I believe they settled in Kansas City, Missouri. I also believe Jean (John) was the first to leave for the U.S. and lived in Kansas City. Another brother, Nicholas, who was a tailor in Belgium soon followed. In 1909 Nicholas was living at 2751 Lister Ave, Kansas City. Two more brothers, Henri and Leonard followed in 1905.

Their remaining relatives in Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada are eager to reconnect with these long lost relatives.

If any of this sounds familiar, please respond to me at:
bettyhenry2020@yahoo.ca

Peter Schmitz was born July 1844 in Germany/Prussia. There was another child, as Catherine states she had
8 children in 1900 census.
Anna was my step great grandmother.
Can anyone tell me more about this family.
Or the parentage of the parents? The census uses the name
Smith in some censuses.
DATA: Schmitz, Lucille listed in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

DATA Message RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA).

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes). It includes the following name(s):

Schmitz, Lucille
Schmitz, Lucille Kerr (Lou)

There's over 1,900 records, so I've only listed the name(s), as it appears in the yearbook in this message.

If you would like to view all of the information that I extracted from the yearbook, I have uploaded it to my freepages genealogy web site. The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that my site contains free genealogy related data & IS NOT a "commercial" or "advertising" site. Until I can get back out & do research on my own families, my hobby is posting free genealogy related data online that may help other reseachers. I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site (including information others send to me to share on the site), not just data about the families I am researching (therefore I can't answer questions about everyone I have listed on the site). I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Searching for Ruby F. _____ who married a Schmitz. She has two children, both born in Mississippi. Ruby was born about 1895 in Mississippi. The first child, Edna, was born in 1912 and second child, Garland, was born in 1914. By the time of the 1920 census from Marianna, Arkansas, Ruby is with a second husband (Otie Kerr (Willis O. Kerr), and the 1930 St. Francis County, Arkansas census lists another daughter (Shirley Kerr born in 1925). Willis O. Kerr owned and ran the cotton gin in Colt, Arkansas until it closed several years before his death. Edna and Garland never carried the Kerr name, but retained the Schmitz name until their death. My husband and Garland's son are very close friends. This research is for his family.

Nicholas Schmitz- Dubuque, IA

I am looking for any information for Nicholas Schmitz born 1819 Prussia and his wife Johanna also born 1819 in Prussia. They first appeared on the census reports 1870 in Jefferson Township, Dubuque, IA. I believe that they immigrated from Prussia about 1860 and possibly arrived in America through the port of New Orleans. Several adult children were also living with them. The children's names were John N., Leonard John, Cornelius, Joseph Theodore, Gertrude, and Anna M. Schmitz.
In 1880 Nicholas and Johanna Schmitz were living in Dubuque township, Dubuque, IA they were retired and no children were in the home. There was no 1890 census and they were not in the 1900 Census.
If someone knows what happened to these two and when, or where they might have been buried, I would appreciate the information.
Thanks,
Don Huffman

schmitz family

I'm having a difficult time with this side of my family. My great grandfather is the last one that I have complete information on. His name was Pierre William Schmitz born 1893 in Le Havre, FR died March 2, 1987. He was married to a woman by the name of Elizabeth Thom Thacker. His father was Paul Peter Samuel Schmitz 1860-1942 who lived in Czechslovakia and died in Heseldorf, Germany. His wife was Adele Marie Henriette Roessingh. His father was Peter Schmitz 1830-1921 who lived in Germany Dresden I think and was married to Anna Pietsch from Vienna Austria. I am looking for any information on these people or farther back as these names are the farthest I have been able to trace.

Schmitz-1869 emmigration from Germany,Peru,IL

Bernhard and his wife Anna Gertrude Dalhausen Schmitz came to America from Wilesburg, Germany(near Koln) in 1869 with their children, Anna Maria 21yr, Franz 19yr, Christina 18yr, Elisabeth 13yr, Peter 11yr, and Johann 9yr. Bernhard and Anna Schmitz are my ggg grandparents. My gg grandmother Elisabeth married John B Frey Feb 02, 1875 in Henry, Marshall Co., IL, and my g grandfather John Anthony Frey was born in Sparland, Marshall Co., IL Nov 1875. I can not find the Schmitz family on the 1870 census, and I could find Bernhard and Anna in Peru, LaSalle Co., IL with their son Peter and his wife Louisa Schmitz. Both men are listed as painters. According to Elisabeth Schmitz Frey's obit her family came to Illinois directly from Germany. I'm trying to locate more information on this family. I have no idea who the daughters may have married, and I don't know when and where Bernhard and Anna G Schmitz died. I suspect in Peru, IL, I'm just not sure. Can any one help me out. Thanks for your time. Carolyn Olson

John Schmitz

I am looking for information and family of John Schmitz. He was born September 18,1870 in Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. in August 11, 1893. He was living in Shandon, Ohio in 1899. He married a widow woman named Ida McClain. Her maiden name was McCleary. She was born November 29,1875 in Wisconsin. John and Ida were married on December 6, 1899. On November 1, 1901 John became a citizen of the United States. This took place in Butler County, Ohio. They had the following children; Daniel L., Anna F., James Everett, Herbert Leroy, and William Marcum. Ida also had a child from her previous marriage and his name was Norman McClain. I was told by Daniel before he passed away that they were from the Alsace-Lorraine area of Germany.
John died January 25,1943 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio and was buried in Greenwood Cemetary. Any information on his or her siblings is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
