Re: Christian and Catherine (Hesster) Schmucker

I am a descendant of John N. Schmucker born 1721. His son Jacob b 1740. and Jacob's son, John Sr.b. 1803. (I realize it makes no sense that John N. had a grandson named John Sr.)

According to an article on the Schmuckers of Somerset County, PA, John Sr. was a Brethren (aka German Baptist &/or Dunkard) married by a Mennonite minister.*

The trouble is, the Casebeers, John Sr.'s new wife and in laws were staunch Lutherans. Evangelical Lutherans, I think.

John Sr. had a son named John Jr. John Jr. married Rachel Walker whose father, Frederick Walker was *probably* a Brethren. COB. No one is willing to say yes, they just say probably.

BUT as far as I know from then on, the line were all Evangelical Lutherans.

I haven't been to Somerset, but Jacob Schmucker is proving elusive from my armchair genealogy search and I wonder if he is the Jacob Smoker/Smooker in Bedford Co, PA (later split to make Somerset Co). Jacob lived near a fellow named Emert/Emmert and together they avoided serving in the Revolutionary War, finally capitulating and being in a sort of "local guard" forlack of a better term. I later have seen Emert/Emmert as a pretty famous last name, and sometimes a first name, in the Church of the Brethren listings.

My wild guess (and that's all I can claim) is that they were Mennonite, split off to COB (Church of the Brethren), and some/all switched to Evangelical Lutheran.

*1798 Mar. 27: John Schmucker and Hannah Casebeer were married in Somerset (Somerset), PA. Ceremony was conducted by John Wells, JP. John was a Mennonite. Marriage record is on file in Somerset Co, PA.

I have a Sarah Elizabeth Smucker (nee Van Sl ?) born Toled, OH August, 1820 died in Okotoks, Alberta, Canada at age 101 June 12, 1916. The math says this can't be so. She definitely passed away June 12, 1916 but was posibly born earlier. I also have papers on Rev. John "Peter" Schmucker born Aug 1783 died Dec, 1860. This man preached in the German Methodist and later Lutheran churches. Cincinnati Enquirer says he passed at his home , 55 Webster Street, Cincinnati at 78 years old. I believe he may have been married to Katy Bumer in Dec, 1804. Their children were, Polly, Peter, Andrew, Helena, Lucinda, Isaac, Aaron, Sarah (not Sarah Elizabeth Smucker, nee Van Sl?) Noah, and William. Do you have any information on these Smuckers/Schmuckers? You may e-mail me at : heatherworks@home.com. I am in Canada

Christian and Catherine (Hesster) Schmucker

I'm not sure that he is and that's sort of what I am trying to find out. There are two distinct lines of Schmuckers in the United States....the Lutherans and the Amish or Brethren. John Philip is from the former group. Your guy is from the latter. Although the two lines are not connected here, both lines come from the same general area of southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria which would lead one to believe that they are related somehow somewhere and probably back in the 1500 or 1600s. So... I am looking for information about John Philip Schmucker's lateral relations and his ancestors. Does that help?

Does anyone have information about the Schmuckers back in Germany/Austria/ Switzerland in the 1600s or early 1700s? I am interested in finding data which may connect Christian and Catherine (Hesster) Schmucker who immigrated here from Switzerland in 1752 and whose descendents were largely Amish, with my family line which begins with John Philip Schmucker (born 10/18/1707) who moved from Austria (probably near the border of Switzerland and Germany) to Michaelstadt Germany before 1740 and whose son John Christoph Schmucker (born 5/17/1740) who immigrated here in 1785 with his wife and three sons (John Frederick, John George, and John Nicholas)and whose descendents are largely Lutheran.

F. R. Schmucker - Violin Maker

Altoona Tribune, 1930
Altoona, Blair Co., PA

LOCAL MAN OWNS VALUABLE VIOLIN
Instrument Engraved With Names of Owners Dating from 1720 to 1930. When a violin is 210 years old, it may be said to have reached a hale and hearty old age. A violin owned by James L. Gilliland, 204 Second avenue, Altoona, is at least that old-if not older. On the back of the instrument are engraved names of every owner of the violin from 1720 to 1930. The instrument was manufactured, undoubtedly, by hand, by F. R. Schmucker. Although there is no date of manufacture on the engraving which gives the manufacturer's name. Carved on the back by the penknife of some long-dead musicians are the following names and initials: "Charles Boring, 1720" "W. C. Heller, 1760," "J. W., 1820," "Frank Boring, 1877," "Frank Vaughn, 1881," and "J. G. Gilliland, 1896."
Mr. Gilliland doesn't pretend to know the real age of the violin. There may have been a lapse of 100 or more years between the manufacture of the instrument and the engraving of the first owner's name. But the present owner claims that the tone of the violin is superb.
Simon Schmucker in Westmoreland County, PA

Much as I have read thru these messages and researched on my own, I do not find reference to Simon Schmucker born 1825, married Frances. His son, Peter S. Schmucker 1850-1910 married Ottila. They all lived around Unity Township, and are buried in St. Vincents Cemetery in Latrobe, PA.

There is another family of Schmuckers who lived in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA starting with Jonathan Nicolas Schmucker, whose son, Jacob was born on a ship in 1741 coming to US and went on to sire Catherine, Peter, John and Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth both married to members of the Casebeer family.

These two families do not seem to be related to each other or to any of the families you have discussed on this Board. Can anyone help me?

Doris

Anna Appolunia Schonberger was born on April 28, 1740, to Johann Peter Schonberger and Anna Maria [Louis?] (D.O.B. Est. 1709-1720 - 5/17/1756). JPS and AML were married on October 23, 1738 in Michelstadt, Germany.

JPS's parents were Heinrich Schonberger ?? - Bef. 1763, and Anna Catharina [Maiden Name Illegible] 7/23/1691 - 11/3/1763. I estimate that HS and AC were married between 1709 and 1739 but have not searched for the marriage record yet.

AML's father looks like it might be Tobias Louis of Zell, Germany, but I'm not certain of the translation on either the first or last name here. These old German church records can be incredibly hard to read sometimes. Sorry.

These records can all be found on the LDS FHL Int'l Film #1347021 which may be ordered from Utah through your local LDS Family History Center. See page 130 (marriage of JCS and Anna Appolunia), page 334 (birth of Anna Appolunia), page 35 (marriage of Johann Peter Schonberger and Anna Maria), page 934 (death of Anna Catharina, widow of Heinrich Schonberger).

Eureka!

After stumbling upon some old letters in my father's possession I have finally been able to decipher and begin to track the ancestors of JohannChristoph Schmucker's wife Anna Appolunia.

Her maiden name was Anna Appolunia Schonberger (umlaut over the "o"). She was born on April 28, 1742 and baptized the following day. Her parents were Johann Peter Schonberger and Anna Marian (I still need to decipher the last name). See LDS FHL Int'l Film #1347021 Page 334.

Her marriage to JCS was apparently a second marriage as their marital record indicates she was "wit." (abbreviation for "widow") of Johann Ludwig List von WeitengasaB (umaut over "a"). I had previously mis-interpreted the "wit." as "mit" meaning "with" and thought Johann Ludwig was her father. That little period makes all the difference in the translation!

More info when I get it.

Johann Christoph Schmucker

Hi Jackie

The answer to your question is that there are TWO Benedict Schmuckers. Benedict the elder was born June 24, 1632 in Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen, Germany and died on October 17, 1681, Michelstadt, Germany. He married Anna Cordula Spiegel (1648-1681), daughter of Johann Spiegel and Anna Barbara Goetz, on February 19, 1666. They had at least six children. The youngest of these was H. Benedict Schmucker (H. probably stands for Hanns, but this has yet to be confirmed). H. Benedict was born on December 1, 1677, in Michelstadt, Germany, and married Eva Maria Catharina (last name unknown as yet)probably about 1706, but not in Michelstadt. H. Benedict had at least three children, the oldest of these was Johann Philipp Schmucker, born October 18, 1707 in Michelstadt, Germany. Johann Philipp married Catharina Suhr(sp?) on June, 26, 1730. They had one child--a girl. Catharina Suhr died and Johann Philipp remarried on August 27, 1739 in Michelstadt to Susanna Catharina Kunckelman, daughter of Niclas Kunckleman of Konig, Germany (probably where she was born). Johann and Susanna Catharina had four children. The oldest of these was Johann Christoph Schmucker who was born on May 16, 1740, in Michelstadt. Johann Christoph married Anna Appolunia (maiden name illegible but I'm working on it) on December 29, 1768 in Michelstadt.

Johann Christoph and Anna Appolunia immigrated to the newly formed United States of America aboard the Adolph under the guidance of Captain Matthew M. Clarkson which departed from Amsterdam and landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are two dates on the original passenger manifest: August 27, 1785 and September 3, 1785. It is unclear whether these are dates of departure or dates of arrival, but I am guessing the latter. The passenger manifest lists the following:

29. Joh: Ch: Schmucker [sic]
30. Ferdinand Schmucker [brother]
31. Hend"k Schmucker [sic] [son]
32. Hend"k Schmucker [sic] [son]
33. Hend"k Smucker [sic] [son]
34. Appilunia Smucker [sic] [wife]

I haven't quite figured out why the sons' names are listed as Hend"k which appears to be an abbreviation for Heinrich, when their names were all Johann something or other, but I'm guessing it had a lot to do with language barriers and illiteracy. Also there is some family folklore that a daughter died on the voyage. If this is true, and I have yet to verify it through the original ships' log which would record births and deaths en route, the child would have been born either on the way to Amsterdam or on the boat because she was not born in Michelstadt where the family lived.

Except for the very earliest stuff about births in Stein am Rhein, I have verified the rest of this information with ORIGINAL church baptism, marriage and funeral records available on microfilm from the LDS folks and translated from German. It is very accurate. I have more if you're interested, just give me your e-mail address.

This message is to Margaret Schmucker in Sept 2000 she posted a message about some new info on Johann Christoph Schmucker. She shows three siblings of which I have some questions. How does baby Eva Maria have a grandmother Eva Maria Catherina wife of Benedict Schmucker? Wouldn't her grandmother be Susanna Catherine Kunkelman Schmucker? Please advise. I am so excited to learn the surname of Johann Phillipe Schmucker's wife. Do you have the name of Johann Christophe Schmucker's wife?

Anxiously awaiting your reply.
The Lutheran Schmuckers - Johann Christoph Schmucker

For anyone who is interested in the line of Schmuckers who immigrated from Michelstadt, Hessen, Germany, in 1785, here's a bit of new information gleaned from some very old church documents.

Johann Christoph Schmucker was born May 16, 1740 and baptized on May 17, 1740. (Most genealogies I have seen have his birth date as the 17th which is an error.) His parents were Johann Philippe Schmucker, bierbrauer ("beer brewer") and Susanne Catharine Kunkelman. His baptismal sponsor was Johann Christoph Kunkelman, but no relationship information is given.

Johann Christoph had at least three younger siblings all born in Michelstadt (investigation continues). They are:

Susanna Maria born June 9, 1743, baptized June 10, 1743. Religious sponsors Susanna Maria and Jacob [last name illegible but ends in "hold"].

Eva Maria born January 1, 1745, baptized January 3, 1745. Religious sponsors Eva Maria Catharina and Benedict Schmucker. Additional notation indicates Eva Maria Catharina was the wife of Benedit and the grandmother of baby Eva Maria.

Ferdinand Friedrich, born April 16, 1747, baptized April 17, 1747. Religious sponsor Ferdinand Friedrich Schmucker, bierbrauer ("beer brewer") from here (i.e. Michelstadt)

Corrections/Additions on Johann Christoph Schmucker's ancestors

In a previous posting I indicated that I had found some information about JCS's mother. Well here's some more, plus some corrections.

As previously noted, JCS's mother was Susanna Catharina Kunckelman, daugther of Johann Nickell Kunckelmann and Eva Koch (NOT "Wamkoch" as previously indicated--see below).

Johann Nickell was baptized on Oct. 4, 1674. Insofar as it is legible the baptismal notice reads, "Oct. 4, 1674 a baby son was baptized * * * Hans Kunckellman the younger (i.e. "Jr.") and his wife Elizabetha from * * * , Johann Nickell, son of Johann Halstring (sp?)[langauge indicating baptismal sponsor] and was named Johann Nickell." Source: LDS FHL Int'l Film 1346406 Item #7, Page 87, Entry #101.

Eva's parents were Hans Adam Koch NOT "Wamkoch" as previously indicated)(b. 1635 in what appears to be Furstengwendt Germany, d. 6/2/1700 in Konig Germany) and Barbara. I found Hans Koch's death notice and so am no certain of the last name and fairly certain of his birth year; it said he was 65 when he died. Source: LDS FHL Int'l Film #1346406 Item 7, p. 277 #220.

I also found a baptismal entry for one of Eva's siblings which gives the mother's name LDS FHL Int'l Film 1346406 Item 7 p. 99 #137.

Also, found death notices for TWO Hans Kuncklemanns....one in 1681 aged 80 (LDS FHL Int'l Film 1346406 Item 7 p. 228 # 75) and one in 1694 aged 48 (LDS FHL Int'l Film 1346406 Item 7 p. 259 #159). I believe these two men were Hans Nickell Kunckelman's father ("Hans the younger" who would have been born abt. 1646) and grandfather (who would have been born abt. 1601).

Incidentally, there is some information floating around on the net that Susanna Catharina Kunckelman's father's name is "Niclas" which obviously might be a nickname for Johann Nickell, but this same source also says that "Niclas"'s father is "Andreas Kunckelman" which is not the same person as Hans Kunckelman the younger so these may well be different lines. Just a warning...and a reminder that it's important to be meticulous and not jump to conclusions. Good Luck!

More on Johann Christoph Schmucker's ancestors

I was doing some research in original church documents and found the following information which will, no doubt, be of interest to those also working on the JCS line.

JCS's mother, Susanna Catharina Kunckelman, was born on Feb. 27 1707 in Konig Germany. Her father was Hans Nickell (aka Niclas) Kunckelman, b. abt. 1679, confirmation the 12th of Pentecost 1696, and married in Konig on May 29, 1698 to Eva Wamkoch (sp?), daughter of Hans Wamkoch (sp?) of Furstengwendt (sp?). The groom's father and the bride's father were in the same business which may have had something to do with weighing merchandise and imposing tariffs.

LDS FHL Intl Film 1346406 Item 7.
Hans Nickell Kunckelman's baptism is #504 on the list of baptisms, his confirmation is listed in a separate section, and his marriage is #72 on the list of marriages.

John Schmucker

We have very sketchy details about him. We have a stack of letters that he wrote to his sister Ellen during the Civil War. From his letters, and from passed down family stories, we have that he and his sister were orphaned (family story is that parents died on voyage over). From the letters we know that he and his sister were raised by the John Forsythe family in Rockford Illinois. In a letter dated in the early 1860's he writes his sister and asks her to ask Mr. Forsythe who their parents were and he is wondering if they have relatives. He writes that he thinks that he is about 19 years old, which would make his birth date around 1843-1845. From his letters and his sister's letters it sounds like they were more like indentured servants. He tells his sister that he thinks he was about 6 and she was 5 when their parents died. He asks his sister to try to find out what Mr. Forsythe did with their parent's money. The letters are very sad sometimes. We have been stumped in trying to get any farther. Anybody run across anything that might help? Our John Schmucker served in the Wisonsin 5th infantry during Civil War and died in Kansas in 1886 from complications of wound received during Civil War.
Thanks for any help!
Jackie Moffat
JMo1032458@aol.com

Isaac Schmucker

As Bev Schmucker indicated, Isaac's parents were Peter and Veronica. Peter was born in Berks County PA. He and Veronica had only 2 children, Isaac and Jacob. Isaac and Leah sold their farm in Berks County on April 4, 1849, and moved to Ashland County, Ohio. Isaac was active in the German Baptist or Brethren Church in Berks Co. In Ashland Co, he was an elder and helped organize the Dickey-Ashland Church. On June 27, 1867, they sold their property in Ashland Co. For the year 1873, the ministerial directory of the Brethren Church lists Isaac Smucker as deceased - Lanark, IL. Isaac and Leah likely had the following children: Sarah, Ann (both died as infants in 1841), Joseph, Paul and Levi. A quick search at the Ashland Carroll County Courthouses failed to produce a will or estate settlement papers. Records indicate Isaac performed his first wedding in Ashland Co on March 22, 1858, and the last one in that county on November 13, 1867 - a total of 8 weddings. John and Barbara Stoltzful were Peter's parents and Christian and Catherine Hesster were John's parents.

Does anyone know who Isaac Schmucker's parents are? All I know is that his wife was born about 1806 in Pennsylvania, and they were married in 1833 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and had several children.

I'm wondering what Isaac's birthdate is, his death date, and who his parents are and what his lineage is. If anyone out there can help me please email me at:
Cascade@itis.com

Silly me. I looked at the obituary again, and it WAS 1838! So now I'm even more convinced that John's parents were Isaac and Leah (Plank) Schmucker!

If you can send me a copy of that book, that would be EXCELLENT! Here is my address:

Kevin Strattan
621 Seven Nations Drive
Madison, WI 53713

email = Cascade@itis.com

Let me know if you need any more information!
John P. Schmucker born in Berks Co, PA

The only problem I have with the connection is that the Obituary I have on John P. Schmucker (not terribly reliable grant you) says he was born in 12-11-1836 and this LDS source listing has this John being born 12-11-1838 (not terribly reliable either). They have both John's born in Berks Co. which fit both of the sources ... it is just the year that differs ... however, you want to try and be as sure as possible when connecting.

That is why I am inquiring whether anyone out there has any more evidence to make/or not make this a connection. I do not know the other children of Isaac, or the descendants of the union ... but I am interested in that information.

My email address is Cascade@itis.com

Maybe there will be some other clues to link John to the children of Isaac and Leah? These are the children I have for John P. Schmucker:
Isaac Heber Schmucker
Charles L. Schmucker
Ida Mae Schmucker
Rebecca Schmucker*
*=our family's ancestor

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Cheers,
Kevin Strattan

Isaac and Leah Schmucker - New information

Hello! I have new information on Isaac and Leah for everyone out there. I just received a message from a genealogist in Carroll County, IL where they were buried and here is what I found out.

Isaac Schmucker was buried along with his wife in Cherry Grove Brethren Cemetery, Cherry Grove Twp, Carroll County, IL! According to information taken down in 1977, Isaac was born April 24, 1813 in Berks County, PA and died December 04, 1871 in Lanark, Carroll County, IL. Leah (his wife) was born April 06, 1806 in Lancaster County, PA and died July 20, 1887 in Lanark, Carroll County, IL.

Now all it is time to back to the next generation. Isaac's parents were Peter Schmucker and Veronica Zook. What I have is that Peter was born September 23, 1786 in Berks County, PA and (now this is a bit conflicting) he died September 30, 1816, but I don't know where. Someone listed a different date for his death, so I'm not sure on it's accuracy.

Peter's wife, Veronica was born October 18, 1781 in Shillington, Berks County, PA, and died sometime before 1891, again I do not know where? If anyone has information on Peter and Veronica's death, that would be great!

Again, thanks to everyone out there for all the information they have shared! If it weren't for all of you I would be stuck in 1838 rather than sometime before 1720 (Whenever Christian Schmucker was born).

Cheers,
Kevin Strattan

Isaac Schmucker

Isaac and Leah were ALSO the parents of John P. Schmucker born December 11, 1838 in Berks County, PA. So now Isaac and Leah had at least 6 children, however I don't have any of the dates for the other children (except what you just gave me).

Thanks for all that information ... that helped me link up the Schmucker family. So Isaac and Leah were actually 2nd Cousins ... imagine that!

Cheers,
Kevin Strattan
