Justus Schneider m. Catherine Elizabeth Krambs, 1858, GER>WI

This is the full biographical sketch from the “History of Dane County, Wisconsin – 1906”: Justus Schneider, who is one of the substantial farmers of Springfield township, was born at Baden, Germany. March 19, 1831. His parents were Jacob and Margaret (Hoeneig) Schneider, both natives of Germany, the former being born in 1800 and the latter in 1805. They came to America in the early fifties and on September 4. 1854, settled on a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Springfield township, Dane county, and there they lived the remainder of their lives, the father dying in 1857 and the mother in 1898. Eleven children born to these parents, of whom six are living. In politics Jacob Schneider was a Democrat, and he and family were members of the Lutheran church. Justus Schneider, who is the immediate subject of this sketch, grew to manhood in his native land and was educated in the excellent schools there afforded. Migrating to America in 1852, on August 28 of that year, he located at Milwaukee, and securing employment on a railroad, worked at that occupation for about four months He then came to Dane county and worked sixteen months for Colonel Bebee; and then, in 1854, located on a farm in Springfield township with his parents, where he has resided ever since. He owns a fine farm of eighty-five acres, and has made a signal success as a general farmer and stock-raiser. While he takes a keen interest in public affairs, he does not profess allegiance to any political organization and he reserves the right at all times to cast his ballot for the man or measure that meets his approbation. Notwithstanding his independent position, or perhaps in a measure by reason of it, he has been called to fill various local positions of trust, among which were supervisor for seventeen years, chairman of the town board, and, for fourteen years in succession, assessor of his township. In religious matters he and his family are members of the Lutheran church, and Mr. Schneider has been president of the committee on church affairs for twenty- seven years. Justus Schneider was married April 4, 1858, to Miss Catherine Elizabeth Krambs, who was born in Germany, June 24,1837. She is a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Albright) Krambs, both of whom were born in Germany. They came to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1850, and made that city their permanent place of abode, the father still residing there, the mother having died there several years ago. To Justus Schneider and wife there have been born twelve children, whose names and other facts concerning them are as follows: Philip, born February 1, 1859, is a farmer of Eau Claire
county. Wis.; John D., born August 21, i860, died August 4, 1864; Elizabeth, born February 13, 1862, died in 1863; Margaret, born February 3, 1864, is the wife of Henry Hambrecht of Madison township; Louis, born February 14, 1866, is at home; Elizabeth, born December 8, 1867, died in 1881; George was born October 30, 1869; Catherine, born June 22. 1872, is the wife of John Tiedeman of Middleton; Jacob, born February 26, 1874, is at home; Magdalene, born January 26, 1876. died in 1881 ; Amelia, born May 23, 1878, is the wife of August Toepfer, a farmer of Madison township; and William, who was born December 4, 1881, is at home.
You can find the “History of Dane County, Wisconsin – 1906” at this webpage, for this bio see page 785 (which is misnumbered 766, on this on-line book):
http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofdanecou02keye/history...
Schneider's in Illinois 1840 to present

I have a family ancestry book which was put together by a member of our family back in mid 1900's It begins with Phillip Johann Schneider coming to the States from Germany in 1840. For the most part, it has been updated to with in the last 20 years by births, marriages, etc. Hopefully I will soon have all input so that I can submit it. The family first settled in the Madison, Il area and some migrated to the more central part of Illinois. I will be glad to share what I have.

I have a Charlie Schneider born around 1883 married to an Annie (believe her maiden name was Sager or something similar) born around 1886. In the Hamilton Texas, 1920 census for them, I have Dunigott, stated as Charlie's father. According to census he would have been born around 1838 in Germany. If anyone has any information about Dunigott or the Schneiders that came to Hamilton Texas it would be appreciated.

Does anyone know anything else about Georg B. Schneider (Snyder), born 28-Oct-1817, and passed 22-Mar-1871? He was baptized at Howerter's on 12-Jan-1818...son of Georg and wife Susanna. His grave is at St. Paul's Evangelical Congregational Church Cemetary in Pitman, Eldred Township (as George B. Snyder). I believe he appears on an 1860 Census in Eldred with children William, George, Mary, John, and Susan. Not much else is known...any additional information?

Schneider DNA Project Update

Just a quick update on the project...

We've currently identified about 40 unique Schneider/Snyder/Snider lines, and I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg.

We've had a couple of efforts in the project to use DNA to support connections to family lines where the paper trail was weak. In some cases, DNA has supported the connections without question, while in others, "issues" were found. These issues could have been as a result of a "non-paternity event" which could be an adoption, illegitimacy, infidelity or a name change. They're still being worked out.

Please see my website for more information on the project. There's never been a better time to join the party.

http://www.janegilbert.org/schneiderdna

Thanks.

Jane Gilbert
Schneider Y-DNA Project Admin

I believe her brother, Peter, married a woman with the last name of Kinder. Any help is much appreciated.

I am sure you heard the story of the Maltitz girls being raised in a castle when tyhey were children and then forced to leave because of political changes. Does anyone know exactly where the castle was? I cannot find any information on Caspar Maltitz on the LDS site. Can you help? Also does anyone have pictures of Jacob or Adam?
Wisconsin Schneider Mystery

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I'm hoping somebody out there can help me solve a mystery:

My gggrandfather was Joseph Schneider (b 1840 in Prussia, d 1911 in Oshkosh, WI). He married Theresa Heiss (b 1847 in Bavaria, d 1911 in Oshkosh, WI). Their children were: Joseph G. (b 1867), William (b 1869), Odelia (b 1870) and Irene (b 1884). Joseph became the proprietor of the Phoenix House Hotel and Sample Room on Main Street in Oshkosh.

Now for the mysterious part -- I was told by the archivist at the Oshkosh Public Museum that Joseph married Anna Theresa Heiss on 24 Jan 1866. However, I ordered a copy of a marriage license for that date and those surnames, but it was John Peter Henry Schneider and Anna Heiss. I later found a biography in the 1880 edition of the History of Northern Wisconsin that states that Joseph married Tracy Hess (an Americanized version of Theresa Heiss, I'm sure) in October 1865.

On the 1870 census, both couples (Joseph & Theresa and John & Anna) are living in the same residence in Oshkosh. I lose track of John and Anna after that census, so they may have moved out of the area. In 1870, they had two young children: Clara (Clovie?) and Alma.

I think Anna and Theresa were sisters; I believe I found them both on a passenger list from 1851, but I'm not 100% positive. John and Joseph aren't brothers -- Joseph's parents were Johann and Maria; John's were John and Katrina. So were they cousins? Or unrelated men with a coincidental last name?

If anyone out there has any information about John Peter Henry Schneider and his relation to Joseph Schneider, and/or Anna and Theresa (Tracy) Heiss, I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks so much!!

Schneiders from Danzig, Germany to Chicago, IL

I am looking for any info on my great-great-grandparents, Paul & Antonie Schneider and any relatives of theirs (i.e. their parents, siblings, cousins, etc. etc.). What I do know is that Paul Robert Schneider was born Oct. 1, 1862 in Danzig, Germany. He died June 14, 1949 in Chicago. Antonie (pronounced Antonia) E. Schneider (her maiden name was also Schneider) was born June 10, 1865. Her daughter's birth certificate says she was born also on Danzig, however, a living relative thinks she was born in Berlin. Antonie died October 8, 1930 in Chicago. They had 4 children: Paul, Ida, Emma, and Willie. I'm not sure about Paul, but the other 3 were born in Chicago. I also know that Antonie's parents' names were Charles Schneider and Helen Haselau. If anyone has any info on this family, or any connection, please contact me. Thank you! :-)

Kelly Kahlau

I have been trying to locate my great grandfather's place of birth in ALSACE. His name was John B Schneider born in 1852. I could not locate him in the 1880 census and he was killed in 1895, and a death certificate was not located. He was married in 1883 in Rock Island, Illinois. His parents were Joseph Schneider and Gertrude Morger or Morgea. Can anyone help with what direction I should follow? Is this a hopeless quest? I have looked through passenger records in the early 1880's but no luck. I did find his marriage certificate and that is how I got his father and mothers name. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anton Schneider b 1818 in Bohemia, in 1870 Detroit Michigan Census

My ancestors Anton and Agnes Cinader were in the Detroit area by 1860 as I find them in the census in Detroit.
Anton Zinader married Agnes Cusna 2/7/1855 in Detroit, according to early Michigan Marriages.
They were both born in Bohemia and immigrated to the US in 1854. Anton was born in 1818; Agnes in 1829. Anton died in 1902; Agnes in 1903, in Detroit. His occupation was listed as tailor in 1860 and 1870 - in 1870, they are in the city of Detroit as Anton Schneider; by 1880 they were living in Greenfield Township, Wayne, Michigan, farming. Prior to their deaths, they lived on Sydney Ave. in Detroit; they can be found in the Detroit city directories. They are buried in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. I have pictures of their headstones.
Am looking for any of their descendents; have info and would like to share.
children
1. Martin Cinader b 1848 in Bohemia found in 1910 Los Angelas Census as Mortin Cinider; railroad engineer; ? married to Mary Helebrant in 1900 in Chicago, had two children, Alice and Arthur. ?Mary remarried Charles Vaught about 1905 and is found in the Chicago census with him and her two Children.

2. Catherine b 1855 in Bohemia (Kate): was listed as a tayloress in 1870 census. I cannot find her after the 1870 census: ?married, or deceased?

3. John Snyder b 1861 in Michigan. changed name to Snyder at some point (my g grandf)married Julia Crookedacre (Krummenacker, daughter of Nicholas and Barbara (Hoper, Hopper) Krummenacker, also living and farming in Greenfield Twp in 1870 to 1880). Nicholas was born in Alsace in 1847. Barbara born in Michigan. Also Anton and Agnes are found in the 1870 Detroit census as Antony Schneider, John married Julia Kronemaker (Cromonocker, Krummenacker) about 1891 in Detroit; children were Elsie, Lillian, Walter, John, Mamie, Melvin.

4. Mary b 1860 in Michigan m Alexander Ptolemy of Wentworth Ontario, Canada, children were Clara, George and Hugh)

5. Rosa or Ellen "Nellie" in the Chicago censuses: b 1863 in Detroit, m John Waldie (lived in Chicago) who had these children: George, Charles, Arthur, Mable (Wolfe) and Esther (Economos); John and sons were Chicago city firefighters.
It appears the only descendent was from Charles, son Milton Waldie b. about 1912.

6. Agnes b 1870 in Michigan ? unable to find later

7. Mitchell (Michael) b 1857 in Detroit married Elizabeth Bellaby: Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph and Ellen Bellaby who were born in England, and Scotland, and were living and farming in Greenfield Twsp. Wayne Michigan in 1880. Elizabeth's siblings were Arthur, Charles, William and George. Mitchell and Elizabeth Children were: Laura m William Diesing, Charlotte m. George Breitmeyer, Agnes m. Rudolph Nemecek, Grace m. Clarence Breitmeyer, Milo m Kathlene (?), William m Arlene Wentworth. Mitchell and Elizabeth are buried in Oakland County Michigan

8. Charles b in Detroit married Amelia Hartwig; I have his descendents also.

I visited Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit last summer to find the graves of Anton and Agnes Cinader - husband and wife who I was surprised to find were not buried side by side but within this larger area; I was informed that the graves in this area had been owed by the Slovenska Lipa Society - from what I have been able to learn it was a society formed to preserve the immigrants way of life. The Cinadr's or Cinaders immigrated to Michigan around 1854, during the first wave of Bohemians and it appears a number of families were farming in Greenfield township during the 1860 -1880's. Can anyone provide more information about this society and if it still is present today?
Am looking for any descendents for are researching these lines or any descendents of early Bohemians to Detroit/Wayne county area who might be familiar with the Slovenska Lipa Society or its modern counterpart.

I am looking for any Schneiders from Texas or who moved from Texas. My grandfather was Glenn Franklin Schneider who married Patsy Lou Cordell. They had four boys: Kenneth, Butch (this is a nickname I think), Steven (goes by Mark), and Phillip. Glenn and Patsy lived in the Howe, Texas/Sherman, Texas area. Glenn's siblings include Walter Schneider, Betty (Schneider) Williams and others that I do not know. I think one of my grandfather's brothers or uncles moved to the Riodosa, New Mexico area. My grandfather died in the early 90s, but Walter and Betty are in their 80s. Email me anytime: melissa94723@hotmail.com

I am missing death dates for several of my relatives. Most are from the DC area. Migrated to the US around 1830. Gottlob C. Schneider. He was the father of the famous DC architect Thomas Franklin Schneider who was my gg uncle. My gg-grandfather was William Schneider from DC apprx. 1852. He married Rachael Davis. I am missing both of their death dates as well as my g-grandfather Albert Moreland Schneider. He seemed to disappear but his wife re-married (Minna B. Whipple) and was found in the 1930 census along with my grandfather and his brother Edwin. Any information on this lineage would be greatly appreciated.

Jon M.
My g-g-g-g-grandfather was Jacob Schneider, who came from Europe. I don't know where in Europe. He was in Albany NY, then Frederick Co. MD., and Davidson Co. NC, .He was first a teacher then a preacher, somewhere in NY. I understand he organized other reformed churches. An article in the Centennial History of Davidson CO. NC said he was an especially good teacher of the languages and higher brances of science. He died in 1826 in Leesburg, Va and was buried in Lovettsville, VA. in the cemetery connected with the German Reformed Church. Somewhere down the line the name was changed to Snider and my branch of the family migrated to Missouri. Any info on Jacob or his wife, I think her name was Catharina ?

Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City, who returned yesterday to the City Hall there after a brief vacation, oficially welcomed another newly returned Jersey City celebrity shortly before noon. He was Edward Schneider, holder of the junior transcontinental flight record. Young Schneider went to the City Hall to deliver a message to Mayor Hague from John C. Porter, Mayor of Los Angeles. Mayor Porter's letter said: "Your letter of August 12 was delivered to me today by Junior Aviator Edward Schneider. My congratulations to you for the enteprise shown by one of your citizens in making this record-breaking flight. It is, indeed, a pleasure to extend to your city greetings from the city of Los Angeles." About 2,000 persons were present to greet the young avaiator and his father as they ascended the City Hall steps.

Source: New York Times; August 26, 1930

Eddie August Schneider (1911-1940) in the New York Times on January 16, 1937

Flier says lawyer sent him to Spain. Schneider names New Yorker as giving him ticket to join loyalist army. Promised $1,500 a month, but he was never paid, so he quit, witness declares - tells story to U.S. officials.

Eddie Schneider, 25-year-old aviator, who recently returned to the United States after serving a month in the so-called Yankee Squadron with the Spanish Loyalists, said yesterday that a New York lawyer had negotiated with him for his services abroad. Schneider, who began his career as a flier in 1928, appeared at the Federal Building, where he was questioned by John F. Dailey Jr., Chief Assistant United States Attorney. Mr. Dailey, who last Thursday questioned Bert Acosta and Gordon K. Berry, both of whom served in the same squadron, is conducting an investigation to determine if the service of the Yankee Squadron in Spain was a violation of a federal statute. That statute provides: 'Whoever, within the territory or jurisdiction of the United States, enlists or enters himself, or hires or retains another person to enlist or enter himself, or to go beyond the limits or jurisdiction of the United States with intent to be enlisted or entered in the service of any foreign prince, state colony, district or people as a soldier or as a marine, or seaman on board of any vessel of war, letter or marquee, or privateer, shall be fined not more than $1,000 and imprisoned not more than 4 years.' According to Schneider, the lawyer told him that he would be paid $1,500 a month for his services in the air force and would receive a bonus of $1,000 for every Rebel plane he shot down. The lawyer, he said, gave him his steamship ticket. Schneider, in an interview with newspapermen, said that he had quit Spain because the Loyalist Government had not carried out its obligations under a contract signed in Valencia. The only money he received, he said, came from the Spanish Embassy in Paris, which paid his fare back to the United States. Colonel Lewis Landes, attorney for Schneider, interrupted to say on behalf of his client that Schneider had really quit Spain because he wished to comply with President Roosevelt's neutrality program. Schneider said that Major Thomas Lamphier was still abroad flying for the Loyalists. He said that he himself had taken part in bombing raids daily for about three weeks. The bombers, he said were remodeled sport planes, and the bombs were dropped through floor openings.

Source: New York Times; January 16, 1937

December 23, 1940, Deep Creek and Flatbush Avenue, Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, Kings County, Long Island, New York City, New York, USA)

Schneider Makes Record Flight East; Pilot, 18, Cuts Goldsborough's Junior Coast-To-Coast Mark By 1 1/2 Hours. Lowers Round-Trip Time Jersey City High School Boy Arrives From Los Angeles In 27 Hours 19 Minutes, Dodging Storm On Way.

Roosevelt Field, Long Island; August 24, 1930. In his trim little Cessna monoplane Edward Schneider, 18-year-old high school student, roared across the field here this afternoon, descended in a series of tight spiral turns and touched his wheels at 4:03 to establish new junior transcontinental flying records. Despite two setbacks, one over Kansas when his compass refused to function, and another when a storm overtook him over the treacherous Alleghenies on today's non-stop leg from Columbus, Ohio, the youthful pilot set his flying time between Los Angeles and Roosevelt Field at 27 hours and 36 minutes the former mark of 29 hours 55 minutes set by Frank Goldsborough, who was killed recently in a crash in the White Mountains. Schneider was greeted by his father, Emil A. Schneider, of 114 Carleton Avenue, Jersey City, others of the family and 2,500 enthusiastic Sunday visitors to the field here. He started from Los Angeles last Thursday and made three overnight stops en route. On landing, he said that the storm was on its way here, and stood by while mechanics hurried his plane into a hanger. He said that he was too hungry to talk about his trip. Then when his hunger had been partially appeased by a sandwich the young pilot related his experiences on the last leg of his flight. Weather reports had not been too good when he was ready to take off from Columbus. He counted on an even chance to ‘get through,’ however, and pushed on with the knowledge that he was on the air mail route, with its emergency landing fields and better sectional airports at frequent intervals in case he were forced down. As he neared Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he had to leave the course about thirty miles to the south, he said, to avoid a severe storm which was then over Pittsburgh. As he came up over the Alleghenies, approaching Middletown from the west, a strong headwind was encountered which brought with it s strata of low-hanging clouds. He could not see the ground for a while, he said, as he flew above the clouds rather than hitting one of the mountains. With no landmarks to check by and no radio guidance, he headed for New York by compass and got his next land check near Stroudsbourg, Pennsylvania. Keeping the mail route under him, again he headed for New Brunswick and, finding visibility fair beneath him, he continued on over the flats of New Jersey, the Hudson and East rivers and the outlying sections of New York City. He maintained high attitude so he would be able to wheel and run from thickening weather which was approaching. A few moments after he landed here the skies darkened and mechanics and others on the field rushed their planes into hangers or took precautions to prevent them from being damaged in the approaching storm Schneider and his family left the field almost immediately and motored to their home in Jersey City. In addition to lowering Goldsborough’s record for the trip from Los Angeles to New York Schneider also broke the junior records for the east-west trip last week and the record for the round trip journey concluded today. He left Westfield, New Jersey, last week and, with several overnight stops en route, landed at Los Angeles in 29 hours and 55 minutes of flying time, 4 hours and 22 minutes faster than Goldsborough’s time over the same route. His flying time for the round trip was therefore 57 hours and 14 minutes, against his predecessor’s record of 62 hours and 58 minutes.

Source: New York Times; August 25, 1930

December 23, 1940, Deep Creek and Flatbush Avenue, Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, Kings County, Long Island, New York City, New York, USA)

3 U.S. airmen here to explain aid to loyalists. Acosta, Berry, Schneider fly to capital with their attorney.

Back from the broken harvests of the bloody Spanish war, the famed triumvir of American air fighters – Bert Acosta, Gordon Berry and Eddie Schneider – flew into Washington Airport yesterday all set to do some tall explaining to the Federal Government. Apparently none the worse for the wear and tear of the bitter civil conflict, now in its sixth month, the trio who quit because "it would be suicide to continue" and because their actions "might not be in tune with the spirit of neutrality", talked freely with newsmen about the reasons that motivated their enlistment. "I was broke, hungry, jobless," 25-year-old Schneider, who is married and has a family in New York, said. "Yet despite the fact that all three of us are old-time aviators who did our part for the development of the industry were left out in the cold in the Administration’s program of job making. Can you blame us for accepting the lucrative Spanish offer?" While other airmen – British and French – were afforded a two-week courtesy for training, American fliers were just shown to loyalist hangars, given a plane and and ordered to do their stuff. "We were flying old crates," Acosta said, “while other nationalists were given modern ships. But for the protection afforded us by Soviet pursuit planes we would not be alive now to tell you this tale." All three had the highest praise for the Russian flyers and nothing but scorn for the Moors. "They are the traditional enemies of the Spaniard," Berry said. "Spain is not fighting a civil war but an invasion.” Denying news reports that they dropped bombs over Burgos as a Christmas Day greeting for the fascist rebel junta, the fliers said that they spent the holidays in Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous state of Barcelona. Once they stared death in the face. That was in the Catalan capitol when all unwittingly they tuned in on Rome in a restaurant radio and had a band blare forth with the Fascist anthem. "It was a close call." The youthful Schneider said, "we almost got shot as agents provocateur." Unpaid, and hearing of repercussions back home from the British Ambassador in Bilboa, the trio made up their minds to quit the conflict for good. "This was a mess," Schneider explained, "and there was always that never-ending jockeying for the power among the factions to contend with, it got to the point where we did not know who we were fighting and why, and you can say that we are damn glad to be back." The three fliers were accompanied here by their attorney, Colonel Lewis Landes, of New York, an officer in the Reserve Corps. They came here voluntarily to see various Government officials, but the State Department not on their calling list. In the afternoon they had lunch at the Army and Navy Club and discussed modern fighting methods with Colonel Richards. The latter was interested in the war value of pursuit ships and questioned the trio on the observations. Tomorrow all three have an appointment with Senator Ashurst on neutrality legislation. They also will be questioned by the Justice and Commerce departments, but they did not disclose the nature of the conferences. Regarding the pay owed them by the Spanish Government, Landes disclosed that all three received "about $500 apiece" Monday from "the Spanish counsel" in New York. He did not disclose the latter’s identity. Meanwhile, representative McCormack (Democrat), of Massachusetts, was requesting of Secretary of State Cordell Hull a State Department inquiry into whether a Spanish consul in New York had paid American aviators to serve in the Spanish civil war. In a letter he demanded a withdrawal of the counsel’s credentials if there had been any violation of the United States or international law. McCormack told newsmen that a special House investigating committee, of which he is chairman, had revealed that "certain foreign governments" had no compunction about using their diplomatic representatives to this country to further their plans and "violate international laws."

Source: The Washington Post, January 20, 1937
