Leo or Henry Schoff--Pittsburgh, PA

Hello,

My father was Leo Schoff (born 1922)

His father was Henry Schoff (born 1874). I did find a Polk's Directory listing where the spelling of Henry's name went from Schoff to Schoaf in 1937-38.

And that's all I know. Having difficulty obtaining my father's birth certificate which may be due to some spelling change somewhere. But there were many Schoffs in the Pittsburgh area in the mid to late 1800s but by the 1940s most of them seem to have vanished.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Diane Schoff

Hello Shirley,

My name is Diane Schoff (b. 1953) to Leo Schoff (b. 122) to Henry Schoff (b. 1874). This line of the family has lived in the Mifflin Twp (Homestead, W.Homestead, Munhall, Homeville, West Mifflin) area of PA as far back as I know.

I am having trouble acquiring my Father Leo's birth certificate and am operating simply on info from our family bible.

I don't know if your info will help, but IF our real name is Schoff wouldn't that be great.

Any help appreciated.

Diane Schoff

Hello - I noticed the name "Jesse W" under fourth generation. I'm wondering if this would be Jesse Woodbury Schoff, born in Brasher, NY, April 15th 1824. If so, I would like more information about his parents etc. I'm attempting to trace my grandfather's line and I believe Jesse would be my great, great, great, great Grandpa.

Dear Shirley,

I believe I am related to Cyrus in the fourth generation. Could you email with his birth date in the book and his father's birth dates as well.

There are a lot of bad trees out there with the father's birth dates being later than their sons, and I'm curious as to what your book has.

I'm hoping that having accurate birth dates or immigration dates would help me to find historical documents to back up my family line.

Thank you very much for posting this information.
Dennis Schoff and Ann Eliza Churchill West Schoff appear in the 1981 Canadian Census living in Ward 3 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They were operating a dry goods store on Barrington Street at that time.

When Ann Eliza's brother, George Washington Churchill, died in Boston in 1906, Ann Eliza appeared to be a widow, residing in Montreal.

Dennis's father was Michael Schoff, son of Dennis, and his mother was Katie O'Neil, sister of Henry O'Neil. I believe
Dennis had the following siblings:William, Robert, Jane, Kate, Sarah and Annie. I obtained this information from an Ontario relative who also indicated that she thought Dennis lived in Sarnia. In the 1871 Canadian Census, Dennis and family are shown as living in Ailsa Craig, Ontario, which is close to Sarnia. However, in 1881 Canadian Census, they are all living in Ward 3, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I do believe that there is a copy in the Salt Lake City Family History Library that may be on microfilm. You may check there.

Hi, Russell is my father in law. He worked at the Post Office . That is where I met my husband, Ross. I'm still trying to find out what his grandfather name was. He thought is was Archie, the same as his Uncle Arch & Aunt Janet. We're still here in LaPorte. If you have any infor to help explain our heritage to our daught Samantha, I would apprecieate it. It seems there is no heirs to the Schoff name on our side. Ross has 2 sisters & 1 brother, but none had sons to carry on the Schoff name. Roxanne married Scott Daly and has 1 son & 1 daughter. Joellen has 2 boys & 2 girls. Randy has 4 girls and we have one girl. I'd be interested on how the two brother split up and who changed the name?
Thanks Sue

Yes, Michael, your g-grandfather Johann Christian Joachim "Joseph" Schoof is the same as my Joseph. Louise "Lizzie" Schoof's maiden name is Leeker (she was born a Pottebaum but her father died, mother remarried a Leeker, and the children born to Pottebaum went by Leeker name).

Joseph was struck by a vehicle while parked along a country road talking with some men. He was struck when he started to cross the road and a truck struck him. There is a big article in the LaPorte Herald Argus, 25 Oct 1935 edition, front page.

I've just started researching my family tree and have made it back (somewhat)to my g-grandfather on my father's side. I received a copy of my grandfather's (Arthur Fredrick Schoof, born near Tracy, In. in 1890)application for social security number and he listed his parents as Joseph Jhon Schoof and Louise Lizzie Loeckerd. When I was growing up I remember my Dad (Charles Henry Schoof, born 1923 in Mill Creek, In) telling me about a farm accident when he was young that involved his uncle(I think!). I was hoping that your gg-grandfather Joseph was the same as my g-grandfather. I would appreciate any info you could provide. You can contact me at mkschoof@hotmail.com. Thanks

Hi Shirley,
I just found my ggggrandfather, Henry D Schoff of Brunswick. VT. My line would be Jacob>Isaac>Henry D who married Tamson Lamkin in Brunswick in 1848. Their daughter, Amanda Malvina married Ezekiel Gardner. That would make us cousins. Please drop me a line, I would enjoy corresponding with you and sharing info.
Thanks
Connie in Illinois

Hornberg

Hornberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany is the town where the Schoffs are said to have lived prior to Jacob's immigration to the United States. (I do hope Hornberg is the correct spelling as there is also a Hornburg and a Horneburg in Germany) Although I only passed through Hornberg while on a trip to visit the other Black Forest towns of Freiburg and Triberg, it appeared to be a pretty little town. In my travels, I learned a story about Hornberg that I thought was rather funny.

In 1564 the citizens of Hornberg were preparing for the arrival of the Duke of Württemberg with an honor guard that was prepared to give a 21 gun salute. A guard was posted on the castle tower to spot the duke and warn the militia and all other men of military age. The guard thought he had seen the duke and so the men discharged their weapons in his honor. It false alarm, followed by another false alarm. When the duke arrived, the gun powder was gone, so the men shouted "BANG! BANG!" as loud as they could.

For nearly 50 years the Hornberg Historical Association has been reenacting the "Hornberg Cannonade". There is an old German phrase used when referring to some great event that falls through - "The whole thing ended up like the Hornberg Cannonade." There is also a play called "Die Räuber" is said to mention the story. (die Räuber = the robbers)
