Surnames: Schofield, Wernwag, Cunningham, Eddy, Gott, Covington, Burton
I've been running into a brick wall with my great-great grandfather Jesse W. Schofield.
I'm trying to find any ancestors of this man. He had many children, but the line backwards always stops with him. Please read the following:
Jesse W. Schofield
b. July 15, 1801 in PA (records from family Bible and 1850/60 census)
d. March 28, 1880 in Lexington, MO (records from family Bible)
married on April 12, 1829 to Mary A. Wernwag or Cunningham*
b. October 30, 1805
d. February 4, 1858
(dates from Family Bible)
*Family Bible has Wernwag crossed out, replaced with Cunningham. Says Mary Cunningham's brother married a Mary Wernwag. However, a book by Mary Johnson called "A Nineteenth-Century Mill Village: Virginius Island, 1800-60" (http://www.wvculture.org/HISTORY/journal_wvh/wvh54-1.html) says Jesse Schofield married the daughter of Lewis Wernwag. The 1850 census also has two Wernwags living with Jesse and Mary in Harpers Ferry, WV.
Their children:
- John Lewis Schofield, b. March 28, 1830, d. January 1875
- Thomas W. Schofield, b. April 2, 1833, d. March 15, 1836
- George L. Schofield, b. August 23, 1838, d. ????
- Mary R. Schofield, b. May 5(?), 1841, d. August 26, 1869
After Mary's death in 1858, Jesse married Andalusia Z. Eddy on April 6, 1859.
Andalusia was born on May 20, 1828 in Pharsalia, NY. She died in Lexington, MO, on June 1, 1875.
Their children:
- Bertha Schofield, b. January 30, 1860 (married to William L. Gott?)
- Linn J. Schofield, Sr., b. May 14, 1861 (my great grandfather)
- Jessie Schofield, b. July 20, 1862 (supposedly died young)
- Emma Schofield, b. January 4, 1864 (supposedly died young)
- Frank Schofield, b. March 22, 1865 (married Martha Nickerson)
- Charles Schofield, b. July 12, 1866 (married to Georgia Covington?)
- Anda Schofield, b. May 21, 1868 (married Tilden Burton)
All of the above children were born in Lexington, Missouri.
Some of them moved out to California.
I've looked through Pennsylvania records of Schofields as much as I could online, and can't find a Jesse that fits the timeline at all. If anyone has information that might help me find Jesse's ancestors, I would be grateful.
