Schofields of Scholefield in Rochdale Parish, Lancashire

Posted yesterday on the Scofield Family message board:

In the earliest accounts, variants of the name “Schofield” are Scofield, Schofelde, Scofielde, Scholefelde, Scholfield, Scofelte, etc. By the 18th century the name had become standardized as “Scholefield” then eventually simply rendered as “Schofield” by the late 19th century. Scholefield Hall usually still retains its older spelling but is also sometimes referred to as “Schofield Hall.”

The Schofield family of Rochdale took their name from the Manor of Scholefield. First mention of the family is around 1301 when William de Turnagh gave ‘John de le Scholefield’ part of his land in Buttersworth (VCH, Lancashire, v.5). Later in 1310 'John de Scolefield' is witness to a charter (Coucher Book of Whalley, p.692). This first John of Scholefield is thought to perhaps be a brother or son of William de Turnagh, who is recorded as owning extensive holdings in Scholefield prior to John‘s appearance (VCH, Lancashire, v.5). ‘John son of John de Scolfeld’ is recorded as witness to a charter in 1321 (Coucher Book of Whalley, p.634). In 1340 the same ‘John de Scholefeld’ is witness to a grant of land in Burnley to the Monastery of Whalley (Coucher Book of Whalley, p.326). The poll tax of 1380 shows a John del Schofelt, his wife, and sons Thomas and John Schofelt.

In a dispute over ‘the lands and moors called Wittaker’ with his distant cousin Hugh Schofeld in 1537, James Schofield of Scholefield placed his pedigree into evidence at the Duchy court:

'James Schofeld' (the plaintiff) son and heir of 'Hugh Schofeld' son and heir of 'James Schofeld' son and heir of 'John de Schofeld' son and heir of 'John de Schofeld' (1272-1307)

James Schofield lost the case and Whittaker remained in Hugh Schofeld's family until 1615 when his descendant, Abrahm Scholfield began selling off portions of the property. Afterwards, Whittaker was repeatedly subdivided until the last member of this junior branch of the Schofield family sold off part of his small share around 1813. (Fishwick, Rochdale, pp.359, 366-67).

According to William Flower's Visitation of Lancashire, 1567, Cuthbert Schofield was son of the above-mentioned James Schofield and Anne Latham, daughter of Edward Latham of Parbold.

Prior to 1561 Cuthbert Schofield married Ann Halgh, the illegitimate daughter of Sir John Byron and Ann the wife of George Halgh of Halgh, near Manchester, a gentleman. In 1561 Cuthbert filed a suit in the Bishop's Court of Chester for a divorce from "the Lady Birron's daughter" on the plea of adultery.

According to depositions given by two witnesses of the incident, a tailor employed by Cuthbert Schofield and Helen Schofield (Cuthbert's 23 year old sister), Mrs. Ann Schofield and Michael Goodricke were alone in an upper chamber of Scholefield Hall while Cuthbert was away with his mother at the Rochdale market. Cuthbert returned and "got to his sword" in an attempt to slay Michael Goodricke and Ann Schofield, who both escaped out a window.

Other depositions state that after leaving Cuthbert, Ann Schofield lived with her mother, the Lady Byron, for awhile but left suddenly one night. William Lathom of Aigburth in Childwall and his wife both deposed that some time after the incident at Scholefield Hall, Michael Goodricke, a relation of the Lathoms of Allerton and Parbold, "brought a gentlewoman" into their house whom he called his wife and they stayed there with the Lathoms for two months while waiting for passage to Ireland. Upon discovering she was Mr. Schofield's wife, they "presentlie rid ye house of them." Michael Goodricke and Ann Schofield then left for Ireland.

Ann Schofield's friends testified that Cuthbert was remarkable for "hys hatrid that he bare vnto women" and his numerous infidelities, particularly with Ann Collins who bore his illegitimate child, which caused Mrs. Schofield to leave him (Lanc. MSS cited in Derby Household Books, Chetham, XXXI).

Cuthbert Schofield also had two children out of wedlock with Jane Langley: Alexander Schofield, born 1588, and John Schofield, born 1590. The Rochdale Parish Register notes, “b 1588, baptized Alexander, filius of Mr. Cuthbeard Scofeld et Jane Langley“ and “1590 (b), John, filius of Mr. Cuthbeard Scofeld et Jane Langley” - note that the “b” in both these entries means base born or illegitimate.

Since Cuthbert did not have any legitimate heirs, his estate, along with Scholefield Hall, eventually went to his nephew, Gerrard Schofield. Cuthbert's illegitimate son Alexander Schofield, under the guardianship of Cuthbert Holdsworth, sued his cousin Gerrard in 1601 (44 Elizabeth I) for the manor of The Holt. Ownership of The Holt was due to revert to Cuthbert Schofield upon the death of its current owner, Jane Grimshawe. Alexander claimed his father made an arrangement with Gerrard in 1583 that The Holt would be Alexander's for a term of ninety-nine years after the death of Mrs. Grimshawe. Alexander lost the case and it passed on to Gerrard Schofield (Fishwick, Rochdale, p. 378).

Cuthbert’s heir “ Mr. Gerrarde Scolfelde” is recorded on the parish church’s register as marrying on 10 March 1602 to Mary Linney and by 1626 he held the family estates of Scholefield Hall, The Round House, The Holt, and Booth Hollins. He died at The Holt on 01 October 1638 passing Scholefield Hall on to his 18 year old son and heir James Scholefield. James was the last Schofield to inhabit the family's ancestral home (Dugdale, Visit.). By 1673, James Scholefield had sunk into proverty, due to his support for the King during the English Civil War, and he sold Scholefield Hall to his son-in-law Seth Clayton, Esq. The Clayton family resided at Scholefield until 1770 when it was purchased by Robert Entwisle of Foxholes (VCH Lancashire, v.5).

James’ son Radcliffe Scholefield married Mary Frankland and practiced law in Rochdale, and for a period (1683 - 1691) served as the steward of the Manor of Scholefield, until he retired to Henshaw. Radcliffe’s only son to pass on the family name was his eldest son, also named Radcliffe Scholefield. The second Radcliffe was a Presbyterian minister at Hall Fold Chapel before going to Ringhay Chapel in Cheshire, where he was buried 16 August 1724. Radcliffe Scholefield’s only son, Richard, was also a minister and succeeded his father at Hall Fold Chapel then later served at the Presbyterian Chapel at Buxton. According to the Dickenson Parish register Richard Scholefield died in July 1740 leaving two children: Radcliffe and Josepha. Like his father and grandfather, this Radcliffe Scholefield was also a minister who was forced by a severe attack of gout into resigning his Birmingham pastorate in 1798. The last of the Schofields, the unmarried Radcliffe Scholefield died 21 June 1803 while living with his spinster sister Josepha (Fishwick, Rochdale, pp.361-62).

Many American Scofields/Schofields trace their ancestry to the brothers Richard and Daniel Scofield who immigrated to New England around 1635. Richard and Daniel are alleged to be the sons of the same Alexander Schofield mentioned earlier (the illegitimate son of Cuthbert Schofield and Jane Langley).

Most of what is circulating on the internet concerning the early Schofields of Rochdale, in connection to Richard and Daniel Scofield, seems to contradict the facts:

- Most online pedigrees show Cuthbert Schofield's birth date as 1555 - this is wrong. Cuthbert could not have been born in 1555 if he was suing his wife for divorce in 1561. Otherwise, Cuthbert would have been a divorcee at the tender age of seven. According to her deposition in Cuthbert's divorce, Helen Schofield (Cuthbert's sister) was born around 1538, so a more realistic birth date for Cuthbert would be 1540 or earlier.

- Cuthbert's adjusted birth date would also push back the dates of his parents' birth (James Schofield and Ann Lathom) from 1535 to at least 1520 (probably earlier taking into account James Schofield's lawsuit over ownership of Whittaker filed against his cousin Hugh Schofield in 1537).

- Jane Langley (not "Joney Langley" as she is usually known online) never married Cuthbert, and both their sons, Alexander and John, were illegitimate.

- Many websites list Alexander's birth date as 1577/1578. As mentioned before, he was baptized in 1588 - which would make the usual dates of birth given online for Daniel (1595) and Richard (1600) impossible, unless Alexander Schofield married at six years of age.

Other websites claim Richard was born 1613 and Daniel in 1616, which is unproven but plausible.

Needless to say the issue of Richard and Daniel's parentage is problematic and needs to be sorted out with additional research.

Schofields/Scofields around the world can trace their ancestry to the North East of England so it only stands to reason that most of us are related.

Encourage a male family member with the Scofield or Schofield name to participate in the Scofield DNA project. If the yDNA of enough Scofields/Schofields from different lines of the family is typed then it'll present us with a clear picture of how the various Scofields/Schofields around the world are related - http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/scofield/

Henry Schofield, 1841, South Yorkshire

SCHOFIELD Henry; Sheffield, YKS,ENG; b.1841.

Henry Schofield was born 23 February 1841 at Holt House Farm, Longline, Dore, near Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. His father was David Schofield; his mother was a Laycock - her father was John Laycock, 1780 - 1866 Do you know anything about these people or the previous generation?

Henry emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 in the sailing ship MERMAID. He kept a diary of the voyage. In 1866 he married Mary Cattermole (born 1846, Suffolk), and in 1968 he and his wife went back to England for five years.

I have a photo dated 1872, the earliest one in my possession, of this family. As they returned to New Zealand (1873), their two oldest children died of cholera. The baby survived.

Thank you! For any information or suggestions on how I can discover more about these interesting people.

Migs (Margaret) Eder
New Zealand
Migseder@paradise.net.nz
Schofields of PA, WV, MO, CA

I've been running into a brick wall with my great-great grandfather Jesse W. Schofield.

I'm trying to find any ancestors of this man. He had many children, but the line backwards always stops with him. Please read the following:

Jesse W. Schofield
b. July 15, 1801 in PA (records from family Bible and 1850/60 census)
d. March 28, 1880 in Lexington, MO (records from family Bible)

married on April 12, 1829 to Mary A. Wernwag or Cunningham*
b. October 30, 1805
d. February 4, 1858
(dates from Family Bible)

*Family Bible has Wernwag crossed out, replaced with Cunningham. Says Mary Cunningham's brother married a Mary Wernwag. However, a book by Mary Johnson called "A Nineteenth-Century Mill Village: Virginius Island, 1800-60" (http://www.wvculture.org/HISTORY/journal_wvh/wvh54-1.html) says Jesse Schofield married the daughter of Lewis Wernwag. The 1850 census also has two Wernwags living with Jesse and Mary in Harpers Ferry, WV.

Their children:
- John Lewis Schofield, b. March 28, 1830, d. January 1875
- Thomas W. Schofield, b. April 2, 1833, d. March 15, 1836
- George L. Schofield, b. August 23, 1838, d. ????
- Mary R. Schofield, b. May 5(?), 1841, d. August 26, 1869

After Mary's death in 1858, Jesse married Andalusia Z. Eddy on April 6, 1859.

Andalusia was born on May 20, 1828 in Pharsalia, NY. She died in Lexington, MO, on June 1, 1875.

Their children:
- Bertha Schofield, b. January 30, 1860 (married to William L. Gott?)
- Linn J. Schofield, Sr., b. May 14, 1861 (my great grandfather)
- Jessie Schofield, b. July 20, 1862 (supposedly died young)
- Emma Schofield, b. January 4, 1864 (supposedly died young)
- Frank Schofield, b. March 22, 1865 (married Martha Nickerson)
- Charles Schofield, b. July 12, 1866 (married to Georgia Covington?)
- Anda Schofield, b. May 21, 1868 (married Tilden Burton)

All of the above children were born in Lexington, Missouri.
Some of them moved out to California.

I've looked through Pennsylvania records of Schofields as much as I could online, and can't find a Jesse that fits the timeline at all. If anyone has information that might help me find Jesse's ancestors, I would be grateful.

Thank you,
Sara

Schofield Questions....There are many!

Hi all Schofields! I've obviously left looking into my family history way too long and will require a great deal of help to piece the info I do have together. My great grandfather, Fred Schofield, came over from England when he was 7 years old. I do not have anymore dates. My great grandmother, Maude Edith Killby, came over from England between Dec. 2, 1929 and June 1, 1930. They married in London, Ontario and had two daughters.
If anyone has information that sounds similar to this could you please contact me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Schofield Research (MA/NJ/NH/PA)

Here's my predicament: My family is from the NJ/PA/CT area from what I was told. Problem is, I can't find my great-grandfather or anything about HIS family. Here's what I do know, so maybe this will help:

Me: William Schofield III, born in Lawrence, MA (1980)
My dad: William Schofield, Jr., born in Lawrence, MA (1960)
My grandfather: William Schofield, Sr. born in New Jersey (1941-1987)

My great-grandfather was George Schofield. He married Irene Leland. They had three kids: George, William, and Thomas. I can't locate the younger George or his kids in Ancestry (I know George passed away in either 1989 or 1990), nor can I find the ELDER George and HIS family. From what I know, the ELDER George died in Salem, NH.

If anyone has ANYTHING to offer please email me at wj.schofield@gmail.com

Thanks!!
Bill Schofield

Schofield - Bartram link?

Hello,

I'm looking for any further information on William Carlile Bartram and/or his parents. I've been unable to trace any information on his parents, but I do know that he was brought up and raised by Edward Schofield, Jane Schofield, Joseph Schofield and Hannah Shield.

William was born in 1876 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.

His birth certificate lists his mother as 'Elizabeth Rose Bartram', and doesn't contain a father. Elizabeth is listed as a 'Lodging House Keeper'.

His marriage certificate (he married in 1895) lists his father as a Harry Bartram, profession 'Sailor'.

I've been unable to find either Elizabeth or Harry in census data or BMD records. William was raised by the Schofield family in Hull, Yorkshire.

Many thanks in advance.

Jon

I have discovered in our family (Knowlton) files a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 photograph, over 100 years old I'm sure, of a young man. On the reverse in ink: "U. S. Grant Liberty and Union Frank Schofield" I have no other details on his identity. Our family geography at that time was in the Scranton, Pa - Binghamton, NY area (mostly Windsor, NY). If you think you have a connection or knowledge of Frank, I will email you the photograph for further review.

Hello

Help. I am looking for a James Schofield born c.1838/9 in Oldham, Lancashire. I think that he emigrated to the USA and married (possibly in the USA) an Ann Hadfield. They had two children Ambrosia born c.1869/70 and Edward born c.1871/2 in America (place unspecified on census returns). They had returned to England by 1881. This is all I know about James Schofield. Any additional information/suggestions gratefully received.

Schofield from Bradford

Hi all,

I'm looking for more info on some of my ancestors, the Schofield family from Bradford, Yorkshire UK.

From census data, I've discovered they lived at 6 Leathem Street in Bradford in 1901, and the head of the family was Emma Schofield (widow of Henry Schofield). Also present were her son Harry (widower of Elizabeth Conroy), Harry's son Norman (9) and his daughter Isabella (11). I am descended from Norman, who later moved to Lincoln.

From family memory, Harry had several children after Isabella and Norman, including Constance Schofield and Betty Schofield, and possibly a Bertha Schofield too.

It is believed that Bertha and Isabella (also known as Belle) emigrated to the US in the early 20th century, and married Germans (perhaps Muller or Gros surnames), whilst Constance and Betty stayed in Bradford.

Harry Schofield (born 1867) also had a brother, Frederick, born 1862, a sister Agnes born 1867, a sister Mary born 1865, a brother Herbert born 1870. They are likely to have been born in Rochdale, where the family lived before Henry died and they all moved to Bradford

I'd be interested to know what happened to descendants of any of the people named in this e-mail, as my side of the family (descended through Norman) has completely lost touch with the Bradford side.

Thanks,

James

Schofield/Scofield-Pellington/Pendleton.

Hello everyone,
We are desperate searching for a Schofield family from Manchester, England whose son John shipwrecked in 1841 at age 13 and settled in Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Canada, and married there in 1861 to a Marie-Anne Desjardins. He would have departed from Liverpool as cabin boy on the bark, 'Miracle'. He died in 1898 as they were moving to Baie Ste Anne , New Brunwick,Cdn.

His parents' names were John Schofield and Mary Ann "Pellington" (as given in the registers at the Islands) of Manchester, England. Would anyone know if this couple would be the same as the John Schofield who married Mary Pendleton on 3 July 1823 at St. Mary's Ch., Preswich/ Manchester, UK? or is there another marriage for a John and Mary Ann Pellington around the same time? And apparently the grandfather and great grandfather were also named John Schofield.
We have also discovered that they had two daughters, Sarah and Maggie, both spinsters when they died in England about 1890-1898 leaving an estate to their brother John which he did not return to claim.
Any information or assistance would be appreciated as the family in Canada have a reunion planned this coming summer.
Thanks in advance,CarolG

James was a weaver.

Does anyone link into this line?

Thanks

Eric
