Thank you for the response. I actually think there were two related Ferber Families that came to NE PA in the early 1840's. Jacob and his family of six children - Maria was one of them is one family. I show Jacob's wife as Elizabeth Sterra who died in Baden Germany in 1843. This group came to Honesdale Wayne County. Maria and her husband John Schlager moved to Scranton. There is a biography of William Scholl in the Wyoming County history that lists this family. This information was probably supplied by the Scholls because biogarphies like that one were typically purchased by the family. That is where I got the arrival dates. I have no information on a Philip Ferber

The other Ferber family are all children of Christian and Margaret Christine Wandres - children were August, David, Christine, Barbara, Elizabeth, Mary, Jacob. and Margaret. all born between 1823 and 1839 in Germany. This group came to Scranton with their mother. Supposedly their father had a stroke and fell into the Rhine river and drowned. Many of them are buried in the Forest Hills Cemetary in Scranton. August became chief of the police and was fire chief in Scranton in the 1880's. His son was also Fire Chief. One of his son-in-laws was the Sherrif, others were involved in the Scranton Stove Works. My great great grandmother was Barbara Ferber who married Daniel Tampa a bricklayer.
August was the first of this group to come to the USA

I can find no definite link between these families except they all came from the same area and town. When Mary and John Schlager moved to Scranton they lived int he same block as some of the other Ferber's ( all in the Hyde Park area). Also it seems the Ferber's were all baker's in Germany and Mary and John ran a bakery.

I have concluded that Jacob and Christian Ferber were brothers and that their father was another Christian Ferber his wife was Catherina Reibel.

Let me know if this ties in with data you have
Thanks Warren Acker

Capt. Peter Scholl of NJ and VA – 2d wife Sarah Collier/Collyer

Capt. Peter Scholl of NJ and VA – 2d wife Sarah Collier/Collyer

In working on the genealogy of the “Colliers of Massachusetts,” one branch of which moved from Hingham, Mass. to Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey about 1682, I recently came upon the question of the identity of Capt. Peter Scholl’s 2d wife, Sarah, her surname variously spelled Collier/Collyer/Kalyer/ etc. Sarah and Peter School married somewhere in the vicinity of Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey about 1727 – 1728 and had at least two children in New Jersey: “Debora,” baptized Sept. 11, 1728 at the Harlingen Dutch Reformed Church in Somerville, New Jersey, just west of Bound Brook; and “Willem,” baptized at the same church March 31, 1730/31. The Scholl family seems to have moved on to Virginia, perhaps by 1742. Some of the descendants married into the Boone family, and the son William Scholl may have gone on to Kentucky with Daniel Boone and others. I leave that part of the story to Scholl genealogists, as the main question, as usual, is whether the New Jersey family of the 1730s is the same as the Virginia family of the 1740s and later.

I believe that in at least one Scholl genealogy Sarah is said to have been Scottish. While the family origin might be in Scotland, although my research suggests it was more likely in the West Country of England, Sarah Collier was almost certainly of the 4th generation of the descendants of Thomas and Susannah Collier. Thomas and Susannah were among the first main group of settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts, arriving there in the fall of 1635.

The proof for this identification of Sarah lies in “The Janeway Account Books 1735-1746,” by Kenn Stryker-Rodda, “The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey”, (Newark: The Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Vols. 33 to 35, 1958-60). This is information extracted from a surviving charge sales book for a store operated by Jacob Janeway in Bound Brook, Somerset County, NJ. A look at the map will show that Bound Brook is just over the Somerset County/Middlesex County line, west of Piscataway. The airline distance from the center of Woodbridge to Bound Brook looks to be about 14 miles, not a great distance even in the 18th century. Basking Ridge; where at least two of Sarah’s siblings moved, is about 10 miles north of Bound Brook.

I transcribe the two entries that are most useful to us – there may be others that I haven’t yet picked up on. These list men who charged goods, give some identifying information Mr. Janeway used, mixed in a few cases with comments by Stryker-Rodda, and in some cases notes a delivery of goods by the named person to another man.

From Vol. 33:p. 75 – “Colyear, James, [from] Jly [17]35 – Jly [17]42, brother-in-law to Peter Scholl; . . .Elis Brewer [delivered goods to James]; [James delivered goods to] Peter School, Barnardus Van Nest

[Colyear], John, Aug [17]35 – Feb [17]44[/45], brother-in-law to Peter Scholl

[Colyear], Thomas, Nov [17]35 [and] Aug 36 [only two charge sales – wrc]”

From Vol. 35:p. 41 – “[Scholl], Peter June [17]35 – Oct [17]37, brother(-in-law) to James & John Colyear; apparently a tax collector & magistrate; [delivered goods to Jame[sic] Colyear, and others]. . .”

-----------

Children of Thomas (3) Collier and his wife, Hannah Dennis, all born in Woodbridge, not many miles east of Somerville and Bound Brook, New Jersey:

i. Moses Collier; b: October 14, 1695 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey; d. October 29, 1695

ii. Hannah Collier; b: April 10, 1698 in Woodbridge. No Later record found.

iii. Lydia Collier; b: April 10, 1701 in Woodbridge; d: Aft. May 8, 1725; married August 25, 1724 in Middlesex County, New Jersey, as his 2d wife, Daniel Sutton; b: February 25, 1681/82 in Piscataway, New Jersey; d: Abt. 1761 in Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. I have found no record of Lydia’s death. Her first name is sometimes given as "Lobiah, or Zobiah".

iv. Moses Collier; b: February 26, 1701/02 in Woodbridge,	d: Aft. 1744 in Woodbridge. Moses may have lived much later than 1744, as there are records of the name in or near Woodbridge in 1762, 1772 and a death about 1792.

v. Sarah Collier; b: July 2, 1705 in Woodbridge; m. about 1727-1728 Peter Scholl, as his 2d wife. (See above comments.) IF this is the same family that moved to Virginia by 1742, Sarah was alive as late as August 25, 1779 in Shenendoah County, Virginia.

vi. Thomas Collier; b: March 29, 1707 in Woodbridge. He may be the Thomas “Colyear” who is listed in Janeway’s accounts, above, but note that he is not identified as a brother-in-law of Peter Scholl. This could be because he 1) was known to Janeway prior to November 1735 and therefore didn’t need additional notation, 2) was not of our family (unlikely, I think), or 3) was Thomas (3), whose date of death we do not have. Thomas (4) may have moved to South Carolina, and either there or in New Jersey had at least two sons: Moses (5) and Barnett.

vii. John Collyer, Sr.	b: April 16, 1709 in Woodbridge, d: August 7, 1779 in Bernards, Somerset County, New Jersey. I omit details about John, Sr. here, as they are well known to you. From Janeway’s accounts we can see that he was a regular charge customer of Janeway for nearly 10 years, until February 1744/45. This latter date could well be about the time he moved to Basking Ridge. The fact that he bought from Janeway until 1744/45 also would suggest that he lived within a reasonable distance of Bound Brook, although we don’t know exactly where, and that the first children of John, Sr. and wife Hannah – Else, Rachel, Grace, and Lt. Thomas -- were born in that area.

viii. James Collier; b: July 6, 1711 in Woodbridge; probably remained in or near Woodbridge all of his life, as he purchased 32 ½ acres of land adjoining Moses Collyer near Red Root Landing, Woodbridge, in April 1762. We don’t yet have any information about James’ wife or children, if any, but in light of an inventory taken in 1805 Middlesex County for a James Collyer, I am guessing that he did marry and that person was a son. No proof yet, one way or the other.

(Although the surname was typically spelled “Collier” in Massachusetts and Maine, most of the New Jersey descendants adopted the usage “Collyer” after about 1710 – 20. The Vital record dates entered above are for the most part from published Woodbridge sources.)

-------

The lineage to Sarah Collier, who married Peter Scholl:

(1)	Thomas Collier (ca. 1576, possibly Devon, England – 1647, Hingham, Mass.) and wife Susannah UNKNOWN (perhaps ca. 1591, England – 1667, Hingham)

(2)	Moses Collier (ca. 1625, probably England – March 17, 1684/85, Woodbridge, NJ) and 2d wife Elizabeth Bullard (UNK – after 1690, probably Woodbridge, NJ)

(3)	Thomas Collier (bef. June 5, 1664, Hingham – after 1719, probably Woodbridge) and his wife Hannah Dennis (before 1672, probably Woodbridge – about 1711, probably Woodbridge)

(4)	Sarah Collier – so spelled in the Woodbridge records – married as his 2d wife Peter School. (See above, and other postings on this forum.)

----------

See my Collier homepage for further information on the Colliers of Massachusetts,
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/o/l/Wade-Collie...

Or, contact me with questions or comments on the Sarah Collier – Peter Scholl data above.

Wade Collier
“Colliers of Massachusetts” Project

Ok,

When I was able to go on a research tour, I would go into the local libraries and sign the guest list. If posable leave the surnames I was researching in that area and also an e-mail address. Now, some of the mormon family history room offer the same sort of service. Now, if you are not able to go to the local history research facilities, you should be able to look up the address or even the telephone number. Some of the larger ones even have e-0mail address. Contact them and see if there is anyone else who has been there researching the same surnames. Get information on those who have already done research if posable.

The public library there at Mc Calester should have a genealogical section and I would guess that they would also have an e-mail address.

I see that Jonesboro is not really that far from Memphis to do perhaps a day research trip. I have not been to the public library research center there in Memphis but have heard that it is very good.

You might also consider hiring a professional researcher in those areas. Often you are able to get a list of local researchers with names, tel. # or e-mail address at the public libraries.

Keep searaching,

Beth

That is the best place to do research in that area that I know.

Now, I use to work in Renton. That name seems familiar but but I don't remember where it was.
I am also researching the Ferbers. You've probably found Maria Ferber (born in Willstaett in 1826, daughter of Jacob), who married John Schlager, also from Willstaett. These are my second great grandparents. But I think the Ferbers began coming here earlier than you thought: I read that John Schlager came here as a single man in about 1840, but recently I found someone of that name and the right age who came in 1836. The person two lines above him on the passsenger list is Philipp Ferber, shoemaker. Maria's father, Jacob, was also a shoemaker.

Mary Fulton

I think you're right, and I have just a couple of things to add: my Ferbers and Schlagers are also buried in Forest Hill; Willstaett, which I visited briefly is too small a town for these people not to be relatives of some sort; and I think too that the repetition of names among your Ferbers and mine is significant. Obviously, those are standard German names, but 5 in common! Thanks a lot for your help.
Mary Fulton

I believe Ted and John to be brothers. I find mention of Theodore (b. 5 Sep 1893) in the 1899 Census for the Bentz School near Fairfax, Gregory County, SD. Do not know his parentage. I have Ted married to Olga Sabina Lindgren (b. 5 Dec. 1898). I have indication that Ted died in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. I have no additional data on John. Any details on these folk would be appreciated.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~glendasubyak/thomps...

The above is a link to the free pages of the Pike County History by Jess M. Thompson. There is a Septimus listed on pages 139-143-167-192-228-262-304-557. I do not know if you have done a search on the person using the spelling Septomus and Septemus, you may want to consier that.

There is one listed in Mo.
Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Nine-Mile Prairie, Callaway, Missouri; Roll: T9_677; Family History Film: 1254677; Page: 652.2000; Enumeration District: 35; Image: 0727.
birth year would be about 1840 since this is the 1880 census and I imagine you are aware of the fact that census is on line free. If you do not know about it you can find it here:
http://www.family search.org

Septemus Scholl 40
Susan N. Scholl 40
Georgeanna Scholl 16
Jessie B. Scholl 14
Lucy Z. Scholl 10
Cyrus K. Scholl 6
John M. Scholl 4
Marshall G. Scholl 2

I do not know if there is any with the name that you are searching for. I have not been looking for the Scholl name only recently has it come up as my family Stark family find.
Hope this helps you in your research.
Ancestry.com does give a listed S. Scholl in public recoreds for the years 1993-200? as an S. Scholl in Renton, Washington though. I did not notice any other that that one that was in that state. A name search brought up an abundance of material to search through, but the most noted for the name was Mo. census. Good luck.
