I am interested in any information about Jacob and Margaret Schomer (Schommer) of Wayne Township, DuPage County, IL. I see that Tammy Lockert, in a 1999 message on this forum, has the same interest, but unfortunately her e-mail address is no longer current. The following information may be useful to anyone interested in this Schomer family:

Jacob Schomer was the son of Wilhelm and Margaretha (Reuter) Schomer of the town of Dockendorf in the Rhineland, a section of present-day Germany along its western border with France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland. Wilhelm was born in about 1750 and died in May, 1829, in Ernzen, Germany, which is located a few miles south of Dockendorf and about five mile NNW of Trier, near the Luxembourg border.

Jacob married Margaretha Schomer on December 12, 1815, in Ernzen. Margaretha was the daughter of Nicolaus and Margaretha (Mayer) Schomer. She was born in Dockendorf in 1791 and was baptized in the Catholic church of that town on July 9, 1791.

Jacob and Margaretha lived in Ernzen until at least 1831, during which time they baptized seven children at the Sankt Markus Katholisch (or St. Mark Catholic Church):

1. Margaretha, baptized on June 19, 1817.

2. Margaretha (Margaret), baptized on June 11, 1819, married Johann (John) Lies, had 13 children, died November 23, 1904, in Wheaton, Illinois.

3. Nicolaus, baptized December 22, 1821.

4. Anna Maria, baptized September 12, 1824.

5. Mathias, baptized October 1, 1826, married Margaret Thul (who was born on January 24, 1836, and who died on December 23, 1919), had eleven children, died on June 6, 1891.

6. Johann, baptized December 17, 1828.

7. Nicolaus, baptized August 9, 1831.

The Schomer family probably continued to live in Ernzen until 1851, when the couple and six of their children left Germany for America. They sailed on the ship Edwina from Antwerp, Belgium to New York City, arriving on May 26, 1851. The passenger list shows the following:

Jacob Schomer, 61, farmer
Margaretha, 61, farmer
Nicolaus, 29, farmer
Maria, 26, farmer
Mathias, 24, farmer
Johann, 22, farmer
Nicolaus, 19, farmer

On the same voyage was their daughter Margaretha, age 32, her husband Johann Lies, and six children. The list of the Schomer family shows all of their children except the first Margaretha, who presumably died in infancy, and conforms with their ages as of the end of 1850. It is surprising that with six children of marriageable age, only one was married.

Although John and Margaret Lies are known to have settled in Bloomingdale Township of Du Page County, Illinois, it appears that many of the Schomer family settled in Wayne Township, which is immediately west of Bloomingdale Township, but is still in DuPage County. Mathias, Johann and Nicolaus were all naturalized in the late 1850s in DuPage County. The 1860 census shows Jacob and Margaret living with their son Mathias, his wife and three-month old child, and their son Johann, in Wayne Township. The 1864 and 1874 DuPage County tract maps show Matthias as owning property in Sections 25 and 36 of Wayne Township, not too far from the Lies farm. In 1874 Matthias is also shown as owning land in Fredericksberg, now Winfield, in DuPage County
