ISO Cornelius Schoonover, wife Rachel, daughter Mary, Kalamazoo, MI

I have found the following information in Kalamazoo County, Michigan that shows Rachel Schoonover's tombstone, birth about 1804, death on 25 June 1853 and burial in Comstock Cemetery, Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. No further info about Cornelius. Their daughter, Mary Schoonover, was born about 1823 in New Jersey. Mary married a fellow named Barton. Mary (Schoonover) Barton died on 31 July 1879 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Following info:
Tombstone found in cemetery in Comstock, Michigan.
Schoonover, Rachel Comstock
Cemetery: Comstock
Name: Rachel Schoonover
Date Of Photograph: August 9, 2005
Photo can be seen at:
http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/kalamazoo/photos/tombstones/c...
Image file size: 252.2 Kb
Rachel Schoonover Died June 25, 1853.
Children of Joseph Montayne Schoonover & Anna Hendershot

Can you help me verify the link between my GGG-Grandfather Joseph Schoonover and Cornelius Schoonover in New Jersey and Michigan?
For several years I've been researching my GGG-Grandfather Joseph Henry Schoonover, Sr., who is usually only identified as Joseph Schoonover. By my Schoonover Family Bible, I know he was born on 14 March 1791, probably in Sussex County, New Jersey, and died on 13 July 1843 in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He married Elizabeth Erwine, born 1 Jan 1794 in Knowlton Twp, Sussex County, New Jersey. They had 9 children with all apparently born in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. I have researched good information about the children and Elizabeth Erwine, however, I've been unable to verify who are Joseph Schoonover's parents.
I now think I have the link owing to information that I have recently dug up in Michigan about other Schoonover families. For instance, I have documented that Joseph Schoonover left Stillwater, NJ about 1837 and moved the entire family to Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The one child not in the move was Cornelius Schoonover born 24 Jan 1820 and died 20 August 1823 apparently in Stillwater.
In 2005 I found a grave in Comstock, MI for Rachel Schoonover who appears to have been the wife of another Cornelius Schoonover. Rachel Schoonover was born 1804-1808 in New Jersey and died on 25 June 1853 in Comstock, MI.
Rachel had a daughter named Mary Schoonover born 1823-1828 in New Jersey and died 31 July 1879 in Kalamazoo, MI. Mary Schoonover married an unknown Barton.
Kalamazoo County Clerk’s Death Record Book 1, page 192. Mary BARTON; age 56; DOD 31 July 1879; POD City of Kalamazoo; POB New Jersey; marital status Married; occ Housewife; cause Consumption; father Cornelius SCHOONOVER; mother Rachel SCHOONOVER.
Although I cannot find any verification of Cornelius Schoonover being in Michigan other than the birth of his youngest daughter, Harriet, about 1843 in Michigan, I strongly believe that this Cornelius is the brother of my Joseph Schoonover, and that they both, or maybe just Rachel Schoonover and children, moved to Michigan together about 1837.
It is recorded that a Cornelius Schoonover and a Joseph Schoonover are both sons of Joseph Montayne Schoonover and wife, Anna Hendershot. Although the marriage date for these two of 5 January, 1797 is not consistent with this theory, it is consistent with the same time period (1790-1800) and location of Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey.
1850 United States Federal Census (31 July 1850)
Name: Rachel Schoonover
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1808
Birth Place: New Jersey
Gender: Female
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Gunplain Twp, Allegan, Michigan
Household Members: Name Age
Bradbury Jackson 28 VT Head
Hannah Jackson 20 NJ Wife (Hannah Schoonover Jackson)
Harriet Schoonover 7 MI Sister-In-Law
Rachel Schoonover 42 NJ Mother-In-Law
Apparently Joseph Montayne Schoonover married Elizabeth Martin on 13 July 1800, so who raised the first 2 boys? And what happened to Anna (Hendershot) Schoonover?
Do you know of any information about Cornelius Schoonover and family to verify this theory?
Thanks,
Bob Schoonover, Email: schoony@comcast.net

Kimber - Schoonover Connection, Stillwater, NJ to Comstock, MI.

Seeking relatives of Nathaniel Kimber, age 60-69, who appeared on the 1830 Census in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. Within the family unit he had 1 son age 10-14 and 1 son age 40-49 (1819-?) and 1 daughter age 20-29, therefore, it appears that he was the father of a son age 40-49, a daughter-in-law age 20-29 and a grandson age 10-14. It appears that his son, assuming the same name of Nathaniel Kimber, later married Rebecca Schoonover on 7 May 1842 in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. It also appears that Nathaniel's son or brother, Samuel Kimber (1807-1890), married a younger sister of Rebecca Schoonover named Susan Jane Schoonover on 24 October 1858 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
I have the descendents of these Nathaniel and Samuel Kimber's who married the Schoonover sisters, however, I need to confirm the Kimber ancestry. Anyone who knows this ancestry, please reply.
Robert Schoonover, Email: Schoony@comcast.net.

GGG-Grandson is seeking any information about the marriage between Joseph Schoonover and Elizabeth Erwine about 1817 probably in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey.

Elizabeth Erwines Ancestry:
Elizabeth Erwine was born on 1 January 1794 in Knowlton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of William Ervey (1780-1832) and Catharine Mains (1775-?).
William Ervey was born 1775-1780 in Sussex County, New Jersey and died in 1832 in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was the son of Conrad Arnwine/Erway (1755-1819) and Juliana Savacool (1755- 27 Feb 1799).
Conrad Arnwine/Erway was born 1748-1755 in Knowlton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was the son of either John or Jacob Arnwine as this parentage is unclear.

Joseph Schoonover was born on March 13, 1791 in New Jersey or New York and died July 13, 1843 in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Joseph, a farmer, raised a family in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey with his wife, Elizabeth (Erwine) Schoonover, born January 1, 1794 in Knowlton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died May 16, 1875 in Vicksburg, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. They had the following children:
Locy J. Cornelius Schoonover died on 20 August 1823 and is buried in an unlocated grave in Stillwater, NJ. About 1835-1837 the family relocated to Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Joseph Schoonover was recorded on the tax rolls in Comstock, MI in 1837.

Joseph Schoonover's parents are currently unknown.

It is now known that Elizabeth Erwine (1 Jan 1794-16 May 1875), wife of Joseph Henry Schoonover, Sr.(14 March 1791-13 July 1843), is descended from William Ervay/Erwine/Arnwine born 1775-1780 in Warren County, New Jersey. Catharine (Erwine) Wildrick, wife of George Wildrick, was her Aunt.
Joseph Schoonover and Elizabeth Erwine were married in or near to Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey about 1817. Their marriage record has not been located. They had 9 children born in Stillwater, NJ then moved to Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan about 1835-1837. Elizabeth (Erwine) Schoonover died on 16 May 1875 in Vicksburg, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
Records show that the surname Erwine evolved from and has also been documented as Arnwine, Erways, Ervay, Ervey and Erven.
Robert Jesse Schoonover

Is Lavina Schoonover really my great great Gran??

I have a really frustrating pickle. I am the Great Grandaughter of Wilma Carpenter whose father is Jacob F. Carpenter. There are many other trees who have his parents down as being William Lafayette Carpenter and Lavina Schoonover. Here is my problem. I have photographs of both Jake (as he was called by his family) and his parents. On the back of his parents photos they are named William and Lowiha. Lowiha is close to Lavina but not that close. Also, she was well known in the family to be a Native American (thought to be Pawnee). She also is unmistakably native american in her photograph. Jake is 1/2 Native American and also looks it. So how can Lavina Schoonover be his mother when she has all dutch relatives. Can anyone shed some light on this or perhaps tell me some areas where I may try to research into this seeming disagreement.

I've just started working on my mother's family line. Her grandmother was a Lillian Schoonover. We know she had 3 sisters, Mary, Myrtle and Mabel. There may have been more siblings. We believe she was born in Delphi, Indiana but that's all we know about her. Does anyone have any lines where Lillian may fit? She married a Jerome Hicks.

I've got a Word document called Schoonover Master List if anyone would like me to email it to them. It lists the family back as far as they've been able to be traced. A woman named Mary Schoonover compiled it.

Schoonover - Sullivan County NY - Mid 1800's

I am looking for information on the following:

Oliver SCHOONOVER, born 1820, possibly in the Town of Highland in Sullivan County. No information known on his parents.

He is first found listed in 1860, born in NY, livin in the household of a Jane JOHNSTON, born Ireland, and with Ann SCHOONOVER, 22, presumably his wife. Possibly the daughter of Jane JOHNSTON?

I am interested in his marriage to Mary (MURRAY) PARKER, widow of Unknown PARKER. Oliver and Mary would have likely married about 1870, Sullivan County, judging from census information.

Oliver and Mary had a least two chilren, Emily born 1870 and Daniel R. born about 1873.

Oliver and Mary are later found living in Brooklyn, New York in 1900. Mary is listed as a widow living in Brooklyn in 1910.

Any information on this SCHOONOVER family would be greatly appreciated.

Deborah

I am looking for information concerning Maria Johanna Schoonhover/Schoonover/Schoohoven, b July 24, 1774, marrried to John Valentine Crissman.

She is often confused with Maria Schoonover born about 1745, daughter of Nichaes Van Schoonhovan and Pieterneilia Westfael, married to Taylor (or Hover).

I believe Maria Schoonhover/Crissman may possibly be the daughter of Rudolphus Van Schoonhoven and and Anna Dorothea Van Der Marken. It is indicated on the Schoonover Mastertree that they had two daughters, however, the daughters are not identified.

Maria Schoonhover/Crissman appears to have been born raised and lived her adult life in Sussex County New Jersey.

If you have any information that could help me identify Maria Schoonhover/Crissman's parents it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lisa
I have an original 5x7 photograph of Charles and Stella Schoonover, of Vanderburgh Co., IN, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about the 1930s, probably in Vanderburgh Co., IN, where they lived. Charles looks to be about 45 and Stella about 40.

I found Charley H. Schoonover, age 42, and wife Stella M., age 37, in the 1930 census for Evansville, IN, with their daughter, Dorothy M., age 10. Other photos obtained at the same time show Dorothy married Malcolm Bruner of Evansville.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Schoonover family

Schoonover Family Bible

I have copies of three pages of hand-written birth and death information that appear to be from a family Bible. There are about 41 separate entries, dating from "Nicholas SCHOONOVER born 11 Oct 1775" to "Walter SCHOONOVER died 7 Sep 1955". I recognize almost all of the names -- they are children of this Nicholas SCHOONOVER, his grandchildren and some of the spouses. The person who sent me these copies thought it might be from "a Schoonover family Bible" but died before I could learn the true history of these records -- who actually did own this Bible, who made the entries, and an explanation of some of the individual entries. So my questions:
-- does anyone have this Bible now?
-- does anyone else know about this Bible -- and have the same pages that I have?
-- does anyone know the history of this Bible (who owned it; who made the entries; etc.)

I have included below some of these 41 entries just as they are written, to help provide a description:
*******************************************
Nicholas SCHOONOVER was born October 11 1775 (my ggg-g/f)
Jacob SCHOONOVER was December 11 1799 (my gg-g/f)
Ezekiel SCHOONOVER was born July 22 1801
Denis SCHOONOVER was born february 29 1803
Abner SCHOONOVER was born June 29 1807
Lewis SCHOONOVER was born April the 19 1821
Abram SCHOONOVER born May the 12 1831
Smith SCHOONOVER born December 1866

Mr. Lewis Schoonover died Oct the 5 in the year 1884 husband of Catherine A. SCHOONOVER

Mr. Nicholas SCHOONOVER died in the year of 1890 March the 10th husband of Nettie SCHOONOVER

Nicholas SCHOONOVER died August 27 1861
Marget SCHOONOVER died December 4th 1874
Walter SCHOONOVER died September 7, 1955
****************************************
If you have any information about this SCHOONOVER family record please
contact me.
Bob Schoonover
rbobjim@aol.com

Kristin Schoonover sent me a Word copy of the Schoonover Master tree in 1999. Jason Schoonover also sent me a copy with his unique introduction. Since then, much has been discovered and clarified by many other Schoonovers, and many lines are not yet included. However, there is a LOT there and if you can find your line you can add your family info. for your own records, at least. I'd be willing to send copies of them to those interested--after I return from vacation on Aug 13.
Mary mfs53211@yahoo.com

I believe the attached obit is my G. Grandmother. There's no date or place except that Fairview Cemetery is probably in New Albany, IN.. She would have had a daughter ( Mary Elizabeth Schoonover ) who I know is buried in New Albany along with her husband Edward Ivan Hubbard. I never knew any of them, but hopefully someone is trying to fill this into their tree. Any related info appreciated.

To all Schoonover cousins, there is a Schoonover cousin lost out there some where! I have followed the Schoonovers from OH to IN to IL. I have searched in Franklin & Switzerland Co IN & Douglas & Mason IL. I am resonably sure he belongs in there somewhere. Can anyone help? This what I have: Ben b 1828 IN d 1888 Douglas Co IL. I have found him in 1860/70 Douglas Co census and have a copy of his estate papers, none of which helped me establish who his parents or siblings were. Thanks Wanda

Children of Christopher Crumb Schoonover

As Tony Schoonover and I are nearing the end of our 30+ year quest for our Schoonover ancestors, we need some help from you Schoonover scholars. Here is our question.

From our analysis of the Census records, we have concluded that Christopher and Jane had 8 sons and 4 daughters. We have been able to nail down evidence for only 4 of the sons: Chandler, Isaac Decker and Benjamin (the names and state-places of residence are contained in an affidavit of Isaac D. dated 1852 in the pension records of Christopher), and Solomon D. from circumstantial evidence. We have not a shred of evidence for any other sons, but others are in the Schoonover Master Tree, including Abraham and Joseph. We believe that a James Schoonover might also be a son because he was living in Scioto County, Ohio in 1820, as was Christopher (but in a different township). Does anyone know of evidence, such as local histories, to substantiate the names of other sons? Or the names of any daughters?

Your help would be much, much appreciated,

Don Green

Her parents were George Thomas Taylor and Desdemonia H. Williams. They vacationed and lived in Volusia County for many years. Any assistance would be so appreciated, as Frances is my Grandmother and we can find no trace of her following her divorce from Richard W. Schoonover. Per the county records, there were no living children from this marriage.

Need help locating the first name of Schoonover who married Margaret Elizabeth "Taylor" Wright probably between 1921 and 1930. She was married to William Sylvester Wright and they had nine Children. Wm. Sylvester died 3-27-1921. She is shown in the 1930 census as Margaret Schoonover.. Her daughter Elsie was married to Henry (Hank) Schoonover they lived in Upper Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1920. and I bellieve they were burried in Kenner's Chappel, near Ft.Smith Ar. Mr. Schoonover was either Hebry's father or Brother. When I was quiet young she told me but I can't remember which and I don"t remember if I ever heard his first name.

Searching Sussex County, NJ for Schoonover ancestors

Hi, Researching my family tree. I have found some links to Stillwater Township, Sussex Co., NJ in the 1830 census. Trying to track the following:
I found a reference in the 1830 Census that Joseph Schoonover, Joseph M. Schoonover and Cornelius Schoonover lived in Stillwater Township, Sussex Co., NJ. Also a couple other Schoonover's who may or may not be related.
My ancestor was Joseph Schoonover born March 13 1791. His wife was Elizabeth (nee unknown) born Jan 1 1794. They had the following children:
Locy J. Schoonover, born Dec 12, 1818
Cornelius Schoonover, born Jan 4, 1820
Henry Schoonover, born Jan 22, 1822
Rebecca Schoonover, born Oct 3, 1823
George Schoonover, born Aug 6, 1825
Mary Schoonover, born in 1828
Margaret Schoonover, born Nov 17, 1830
John W. Schoonover, born Aug 9, 1833
Susan Jane Schoonover, born Nov 17, 1835
There may be the possibility that the two Joseph's are father and son. Joseph's father served with Washington at Valley Forge but his given name is unknown at this time.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Bob
Found Joseph Schoonover Revolutionary War records on Heritage Quest, 5 pages in total showing his application for a pension as a result of service in the Revolutionary War. Have now found written proof that my 3rd Great-Grandfather Joseph Schoonover, DOB 14 March 1791, married Elizabeth Erwine and all their 9 children appear to have been born in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey later moving entire family to Comstock, Michigan in the Kalamazoo Valley about 1835-1837.
Margaret SCHOONOVER - Jason KARR, Comstock, Michigan

Can anyone add to this information?
Family member seeking information about the family of Jason and Margaret (Schoonover) Karr. 1880 Census shows them living in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Probates show Margaret Karr living in Comstock about 1867. Margaret is daughter of Joseph & Elizabeth (Erwine) Schoonover who settled in Comstock about 1837 from New Jersey. Jason Karr apparently born in Canada about 1819-1820 to a New York father and Connecticutt mother. Unable to find them together on any other source. Margaret was shown living with her mother, Elizabeth Schoonover, on 1850 census for Comstock.

Kalamazoo County Clerk’s Death Record Book 2, page 80. Jasen KARN(sic); age 73 yrs 3 mo 8 days; DOD 9 April 1890; POD Comstock; POB Canada; occ Farmer; cause “Unknown”; father “Unknown”; mother “Unknown”.

Jason Karr has been tentatively identified as the husband of Margaret Schoonover Karr because both their signatures appear on the Probate papers for Joseph Schoonover, father of Margaret. Margaret's signatures also appear on the Probates for Elizabeth Schoonover, her mother, and John Schoonover, her brother, although her married name is usually spelled as Carr. Comstock, Michigan is the original location where the Joseph Schoonover family settled about 1837 after migrating from Stillwater, New Jersey.

Jason Karr, although born in Canada, appears to be descended from U.S. citizens Moses Frary Karr & Elizabeth Jerome.

1880 Census, Comstock, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan:
Jason Karr (60), b. Canada; father b. NY; mother b. CT. living with Margarett Karr (49), wife, b. New Jersey; father b. NJ; mother b. NJ.
Bob Schoonover Email: schoony@comcast.net

JOSEPH SCHOONOVER, MINISINK, NY, REVOLUTIONARY WAR

Joseph (age 88) & Sophia Schoonover (age 63), listed in 1850 New York Census in Minisink, Orange County, New York. He is also listed in 1820 Census, same place. He is listed in New York Pensioners, 1835 for Orange County, NY as Rank: Private, New York Militia, Commencement of Pension: March 4, 1831; Placed on Pension Roll: October 23, 1833. He is also listed at age 78 in the 1840 Revolutionary War Pensioner Census for Minisink, Orange County, New York. This would place his DOB about 1762. Believe this person may be my 4th Great Grandfather. My 3rd G-Grandfather was Joseph Schoonover born 14 March 1791, place unknown, who raised a large family with wife Elizabeth in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey from 1818-1837. Marriage to Elizabeth about 1817-1818. Schoonover Family Bible (SFB) mentions that my Joseph's father served in Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War.
