I'm a schreier! My dad is hte son of Joseph Frank Schreier. My dad was born in June of 1942 and his name is William. My Grandfather, Joseph, was born in South Dakota in/around 1890's. He later lied about his age when he moved to Wisconsin so he would seem closer to his wifes age. His father's name was Stephan Schreir who i believe came from Germany to South Dakota while his only other living brother moved to Austria. This would of been back around the 1870's or so. I'm actually doing a paper for my University of Wisconsin, whitewater class on my family history. I'm more than informed on my mothers side but i cannot find any information for my dads side. IF you could help me or know of any information that oculd be of assistance then plese let me know!

The only information i know of him as of now includes the approximate dates of his birth and death, but those are even somewhat questionable. I dont know his wifes name because she died when her children (my grandfather and his brothers) were very young so they never really knew of her or spoke of her. one of his son's name (my grandfather) was Joseph Schreier. He lived in Day County South Dakota. I actually called the record department of the county and they're working with me as well, but so far havent come up with any information.

I need help finding information about my relatives. I've searched nemerous times online for my great grandfathers information. His name is Stephan Schreier. His father, whose name I have yet found, immigrated to America from Germany in the early to mid 1800's. I know very little in fact about this side of my family. If there is any way that anyone could help me by either giving me advice on how to find more out about my family, or if you happen to know off hand anything about the "schreiers" then plese let me know!

Sorry, I'm probably not a (close) relative of yours, but I'm assuming that your family, like mine, was Jewish, so I would suggest checking out the JewishGeb website at http://www.jewishgen.org/ .

Drohobycz, however, is not too far from my ancestral home town of Nadvornaya (Nadvorna), also in the Ukraine. And there were a ton of SCHREIER's in Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislaw), which is also with about 20 miles of our two towns.

In other words, we're all probably related...somehow. :-)

Good luck searching!

- Brooke Schreier

I'm looking for SCHREIER's from my ancestral home town of Nadvornaya (used to be called Nadvorna and Nadvirna), which is today in the Ukraine, but used to be in the area called Galicia, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and/or Poland.

Nadvornaya is right near the larger city of Ivano-Frankivsk (used to be called Stanislaw or Stanislavov), which also had a large number of SCHREIER's living there.

Anyone else have any SCHREIER ancestors from this region of the world?

- Brooke Schreier
asparagirl@dca.net

SCHREIER's

> I don't know if our trees are connected but my family is descended from Jewish Schreiers
> from Russia/Ukraine (most likely).
> I am looking for the Schreier relatives of my great-grandmother Annie or
> Hanie(Alta)Schreier Schneider.

Sorry, but I really know very little about my SCHREIER relatives, so these names don't ring a bell. My great-grandfather Hyman (Chaim) SCHREIER came to the U.S. around 1909, and as far as I know was the only one of his siblings to come to the U.S.

I hope to find out more information about my branch pretty soon- the website JewishGen (http://www.jewishgen.org/), which is a fantastic website for Jewish Genealogy, is planning on putting my great-grandfather's town's records online (for free!) in the very near future. A numberof other towns and cities (mostly Polish ones, like Warsaw or Lvov or Radomsko) are already online and totally searchable. The Ukranian records 9which is where my family's from) are slowly starting to go online bit by bit, and should be up by the end of the year, including Nadvornaya (Nadvorna / Nadwirna), where my family's from. So it's definitely worth it to check out there site and go to the "JRI-Poland" Records Indexing part of the site (it's a little hard to find, but really neat).

Good luck searching- and maybe we're relatives after all...?

:-)

- Brooke Schreier

Re: Hyman/Chaim Schreier

Dear Michael,

Hmmm- I don't think we have the same Hyman/Chaim Schreier here, although I doubt that that was a common name or name combination. My Hyman Schreier came to the US circa 1909, settled in NYC, worked as a tailor/sweatshop worker, and eventually worked his way up to owning his own women's clothing manufacturing company in NYC. He married my great-grandmother Ethel in NYC (maiden name SIEGEL or SEIGEL, but it used to be SEGENREICH pre-Ellis Island). They had three kids together: Milton (died around age 3- a truck that was backing up hit him), Ruth (my great-aunt), and Fred (my paternal grandfather). I don't think Hyman was married to anyone else before he married Ethel, so I don't think your branch is related to mine directly.

Was your Hyman Schreier also from Nadvornaya / Nadvorna, near Stanislawaw / Ivano-Frankivsk, in what used to be called Galicia? If so, I'm sure they're probably first cousins or something like that. My Hyman Schreier had at least two siblings, both of whom went to France at the outset of WWII (one died fighting in the French Resistance, the other later made aliyah to Israel). Any of this sound familiar?

Anyway, I'd like to hear from you about your branch of the Schreier family- there aren't *that* many of us, so I'm sure we're probably (very) distant relatives, at the very least. Do you have any more information on his ancestors or hometown or siblings? Inquiring minds want to know. :-)

Thanks!

- Brooke Schreier

Seeking Arthur SCHREIER, son of Herbert, from NY or CT (?)

I'm seeking Arthur Schreier (probably a physician), son of Dr. Herbert Schreier (mother's name unknown).

Herbert is a cousin of my great-grandfather Chaim/Hyman Schreier, and came to NY from the town of Kalusz (Kalush), Ukraine (formerly Galicia). My great-grandfather came from the nearby town of Nadvornaya (Nadvorna), Ukraine.

Herbert's parents were Leib-Josef Schreier and Perl Gelobter Schreier. Leib-Josef and a few of Herbert's siblings were murdered in the Holocaust (out of the 1700 Jews in Kalusz, only 17 survived the shooting, burnings alive, and death camps- that's 1/4 of 1 percent); Perl died before 1942 and at least one other sibling survived from the family.

Herbert was born circa 1898, Arthur was born circa 1930. Herbert worked as a doctor at the Willard State Hospital in NY in the 1950's and possibly before that, too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- Brooke Schreier

My spouse is a descendant of Samuel and Rachel Loeb Schrier, who came from the Galicia area (village of "Filsteen") and immigrated to the U.S. in 1898 and 1900, respectively, and settled in Brooklyn, NY. We have not been able to trace them prior to immigration, although family lore says that Rachel's parents were Nathan and Chana Loeb. Please let me know if this ties in with any of your information.

My grandmother, Ida Schreier Kogan came from Kiev. She was the oldest of a number of siblings, I think 7, one of whom was a younger brother named Samuel. When my grandmother, grandfather Vasily (Mazel) Kogan and their two sons, Julius (Zacha) and Joseph(my father) came to America in 1922, they went to live with Samuel and his family in the Bronx. They arrived on April 28, 1922 at Ellis Island on the Aquitania. My grandmothers mother's name was Anna and her father's name was Nathan. Nathan was a painter and paperhanger in Kiev. There was another brother named Joseph, who died before WWII.

Need more Schreier Information

I have very little information on my grandfather's side of the family and cannot determine if any of the current Schreier postings are related. My Schreier's come from Germany as well and live in WI. My grandfather's name is Robert L. Schreier married to Patricia J. Johnson. His father was William Herman Schreier married to Anna Barbara Roemer. Herman had two brothers, Henry and John, and one sister, Emma. I have their parents as Louis Schreier and Mary Schreier (no maiden name). Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Samuel or Esther Schreier

I don't know if our trees are connected but my family is descended from Jewish Schreiers from Russia/Ukraine (most likely).
I am looking for the Schreier relatives of my great-grandmother Annie or Hanie(Alta)Schreier Schneider. The family story had always been that her parents and siblings all died from TB. She was the only survivor and went to live with her first-cousins, one of whom she married. However, in the 1905 Brooklyn, NY census I found Rachel, her husband Morris and their family. Living with them was a Samuel Schrier, age 19 and a tailor, listed as brother-in-law to Morris. Now I'm wondering if the family story is correct.
Also listed in the house was an Abraham Gosbum/bam/han (couldn't read the hand writing), age 22, also a brother-in-law. His wife is named Esther.

Do any of these names connect?
