Updating my earlier post, I've since learned that my ancestor was Jean Francois "Frank" SCHULER born 1835 in Munchhausen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace and was the son of Francois Nicholas SCHULER (b. abt 1802 Munchhausen / d. Dec 1874 Munchhausen) and Catherine SCHNEIDER. My ancestor Frank SCHULER emigrated to Newark, NJ and married Julia/Julianne EINECKER (b. Jan 1845 in Vogtsburg-im-Kaiserstuhl, Schleisngen, Baden, Germany).

Frank SCHULER and Julia EINECKER had 4 children: Anna Josephine (m. Wilhelm STEINMETZ), Joseph Francis (m. Anna MUELLER), Frederick (m. Elizabeth) and Henry Christian (m. Theresia FLESCH). All of these SCHULER children were born in Newark, NJ.

Would like to connect with any descendants of these USA SCHULER children or the descendants of Francois Nicholas SCHULER and Catherine SCHNEIDER who remained in Alsace (Jean Francois' siblings Xavier, Therese, Barbe). Some left Munchhausen and lived in Bremmelbach, Bas-Rhin, Alsace.

Joe

Adding to my earlier post, I now know my SCHULER family came from Munchhausen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace. Right on the Rhine across from Germany (and at one point annexed by Germany). They were German speakers, not French.

Francis Nicholas SCHULER b.abt 1802, d.Dec 1874
+Catherine SCHNEIDER b.abt 1805, d. Dec 1877

1.Jean Francois (John Frank) b.abt 1835 emigrated to Newark, NJ USA, m. Julianne EINECKER of Vogtsburg, Baden.
2.Xavier b.abt 1832, d.abt 1904 Bremmelbach, Alsace
3.Therese b.abt 1830, d.abt 1902
4.Barbe b.abt 1832, d.abt 1904

The Xavier SCHULER branch (not my direct line) eventually became connected with the FILSER and BURHARDT families from Alsace. Would like to connect and share notes with anyone researching SCHULER, FILSER, SCHNEIDER or BURHARDT families from this area.

Joe

Maria [Mary] SCHULER, b. 1869 Switzerland, obit

I am searching for any information on Maria [Mary] SCHULER, b. 12 Feb 1869 in Switzerland. Her obit

Obit - December 30, 1954 - Harwarden Independent

Rites Held Monday For Mrs. Hillman

Mrs. Mary Hillman, 85, who spent most of her life in Sioux county, living many years in the Ireton vicinity, died last Thursday at the Orange City Hospital where she had been a patient about five weeks.

Funeral services were held on Monday morning at the Catholic church in Maurice with Rev. Fr. Wingert officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pall bearers were Jay Gleason, Sam Jones, Fred Dierks, Harold Fritz, Roy Abbey and Ray McCue.

Mary Schlesser was born February 12, 1869, in Switzerland and came to the United States when a young woman. She went to the convent at Yankton, S.D., and also attended the Mission school at Redfield, S.D. before going to Ireton. She was employed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Dealy at Ireton.

She married Frederick Hillman of Ireton in August of 1898. To this union three children were born. Her husband preceded her in death 18 years ago. After his death she made her home with her son, Fritz Hillman, but for the past 12 years she lived in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mike Krusen, who resided in the Ireton vicinity until two years ago when the family moved to Hornick.

Survivors are three children, Walter of Seoul, Korea; Fritz of Ireton; and Sophie, Mrs. Mike Krusen of Hornick, Iowa; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
xxxxx

The 1925 Iowa State Census states her father was Chri SCHULER, Switzerland, and her mother Julette DIETRICK, Switzerland.
xxxxx

Her obit states that her services were in the Catholic church, but I am unsure that she was Catholic [perhaps her daughter, who arranged the services, was Catholic]. Maria [Mary]'s husband was buried from the Methodist Church, and his family was German Lutheran. She was not buried with her husband.

Any information would be appreciated,

Sharon

This Kaspar Schuler aus Ernen (von Steinen) is from Rotherthurm Schwyz Switzerland born 25 october 1866 married Katharina Seraphine Marty born around 1872. His brothers names were Albert, Maurus, Karl, Joseph. His occupation was cheese maker. He had 2 sons and 3 daughters Severin b.11 September 1895 and Joseph, Anna, Kathy, Agatha. Thats about all the information I can give you on this. I'm sure he did not travel to USA but all over Europe and Russia. My Email address is basilhohl@hotmail.com I live in Sydney Australia and my mother is a Schuler and I am also doing a family history research and most probable that all Schulers have descended from a Hans Schuler around 1480 which goes back to Charlemagnes time maybe Voralberg. They were mercanaries. I hope this little piece of information is of help to you and others that may read this. Thanks Basil.

SCHULER in St Louis MO

I bought a lovely photo at a local St Louis antique shop about four months ago (I only wanted the frame):

Photo of four people (two couples). On the back is written:
George SCHULER and Paula KLOSE . The other couple was Bob ROGERS and Mamie SCHULER. June 7, 1913. "Secretly they went to St Charles MO on street car and got married."

If no one claims it, I will take it to the St Louis Genealogy Office for safe keeping. What a shame, to finally find a photograph that actually has names on the back---and then can't find a relative to give it to!

In my search I found a Braches branch on Long Island, NY. of whom I attach the family tree as far as I could find out. Their historical knowledge was limited, so I could not trace them back to our roots in Germany. They are related to the Braches family with 2 sons (twins) in Plano, Texas, with whom I have not been able to lay a contact. The name Braches of the Charles Braches branch in Peachcreek, near Gonzales, has long ago died out. Charles' father was a brother of an ancestor of mine, but I cannot find the connection with the Long Island Braches.
Hope this helps, Jorn Braches, Ontario, Canada.

Hi, my Schuler family lived in Scioto Co. OH in what is called Schuler Hollow. I think it may have been called Jefferson TWP. My great great grandfather was Anthony Schuler and his wife Elizabeth Ann Souder(Sauter) Schuler they had Charles Anthony Schuler and Issac Hamilton Schuler.
Charles Anthony is my great grandfather his wife was Mary Ellen Blakeman. Issac's wife was Chestina "Tina" Sheppard Shuler.
Does any of this sound familiar? Charles and Issac hadn't seen each in 60 years, while driving threw Springfield OH Issac stopped at Charles' youngest son's bakery (Schuler's Bakery on Main St) and thus was reunited with each other.
My private email is efom428@aol.com or ellentom66@msn.com
you can email me direct if you like. I have quite a bit of information on these families. I will share with you.
Ellen

Samuel Schuler / Elizabeth Doerr, illegitamate son

Does anyone know if the Samuel Schuler, father of an illegimate son, Johannes Doerr born 1778, (with Elizabeth Doerr) is the Samuel Schuler who later married Elizabeth Haul about 1782?

Elizabeth Doerr and Samuel Schuler were both confirmed at Great Swamp Church (as members of the Old Goshenhoppen Church), she in 1772 at age 15 and he in April 1775 at age 15 1/2 years. This would indicate that he was born in / around October 1759, the same time that a child was born to a Samuel and Mrs Samuel Schuler, as indicated in another thread by Colleen O'Byrne.

Would like to hear comments on this hypothesis.

Ben

Nelson,

The following is information on the USGenweb archives, and elsewhere online:

Philadelphia Co., PA Wills

Shuller, Samuel. Phila. Co. Yeoman
December 27, 1774. January 36, 1775.
Children: Gabriel and Benj. (Execs.), Jacob, John, Samuel, and Elizabeth (wife of John McDonald).
Wit: Christian Shade, Henry Schneider, and Chas. Coss.
Book Q, page 101.

Shuller, Jacob. Northern Liberties, City of Phil. Innkeeper
August 11, 1807. January 11, 1808.
Provides for wife Elizabeth.
Six children Jacob, Samuel, John, Magdalen, Leonard, and Elizabeth.
Exec: Wife Elizabeth and son-in-law George Nagle.
Wit: Charles Miller, Christian Snyder.

Eliz. Schuller married ??? August 15, 1801 German Reformed Church in Philadelphia.
Rev. ??????? lists Elizabeth Schuler and George Nagel being married August 15, 1801, both being from Northern Liberties.

It looks as though this is the Jacob Schuler of which you are refering. I believe that he may be the son of Samuel (and Magdalena?) mentioned above. As far as I can tell, this Jacob's siblings married as follows: Gabriel and Catharine Ren 11 Mar 1788, Benjamin and Catharine Mind(k)er 15 Sep 1772, John and Elizabeth Eitenmuller 11 Feb 1777. Jacob is listed as marrying Elizabeth Schneider 2 Jul 1776. These marriages are recorded in Goshenhoppen. Samuel's marriage was not found, at least not in the online records that I found. I did however run across the will of Leonard Snyder, Upper Salford, proved 1797 which lists his children, among whom are Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Shuler and Magdalena,wife of Samuel Shuler. I assume that this Samuel Shuler is the brother of Jacob mentioned above.

I have not ran across any further information on Jacob's [1743-1807] family, as of yet. If I do, I will post it.

Also, a question. The 1779 will of Gabrial Shular of Lower Salford, Phila. Co, PA mentions children William (deceased), Catharine (wife of Fredericj Antes) and Margaret (wife of Nicolaus Rial), along with son William's children; Gabriel, John, William and Henry. Yet online I find many people also have Samuel, who married Magdalena Levering, and Catharine, who married Daniel Heister, listed as children of this Gabriel, also. Were they just omitted from his will? Or do this Samuel and Catharine belong to another Schuler? Does anyone have historic proof of the connection?

Ben

Her baptism record indicates that she was born 22 Jan 1783.

Old Goshenhoppen burials:

page 128,
1783 Feb 12, Wilhelm, son of Samuel Schuler and wife Elizabeth, aged 2 weeks & 5 days.
Hi! What you've posted is Reading Schuler's "Geburts und Taufschein" ("Birth and Baptismal Certificate"). Reading is Emmy (nee Schuler) Harvey's father and my paternal great-great-great-grandfather. I only know a handful of German words. I used Babelfish http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ to do some translation (below). Some letters I simply can't make out. The Gothic typeprint is a hinderance too. The odd looking "f" is an "s" although the letter "s" is also used (just to be thoroughly confusing-LOL!).

Reading, the son of Samuel and Esther Schuler, was born 30 NOV 1810 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (can't make out the Township listed on the certificate).

Are you also descended from Reading Schuler? If you send me your email address, I can send you lots of Schuler photos. There's a small group of Schuler cousins across the country that email each other (CA, MI, OH). I can connect you with them if you'd like (we do lots of group emails). I'll be sharing Reading's birth certificate with them later today! I can be reached at celticmc@gmail.com

TRANSLATIONS:
Geburts und Taufschein = Birth and Baptismal Certificate
Diesen/Diese = This
tag = day
eine = one
ist ein Sohn zur = a son is to
und feiner ehelichen hausfrau = and more finely conjugal housewife
und seiner ehelichen hausfrau = and its conjugal housewife
und ist getauft = and is baptized
und erhielt den = and received the
In the year of our Lord = Im Jahr unseres Lords
In the year of our God = im Jahr unseres Gottes

Please send me any corrections. My corrections are in brackets-Kati]

SHULER, READING 02 MAR 1899

Died.

Reading Shuler was born in Lehigh Co., Pa., Nov. 30th, 1810, and died at his home in Brown Twp. this county, Feb. 20th 1899, aged 88 years, 2 mo. and 20 days.

He emigrated to Butler Co., Oh and in 1853 removed with his family to his late home in this county.

He was married Jan. 12th, 1842 [1843] to Miss Sophia Trine, to them were born 5 children 2 of whom died in childhood. [I only know: Martha, William, and Laura] Bereaved of his companion by death he married Mrs. Elisabeth Liter [Titler] (nee May) June 15th, 1854. This union was also soon broken by death, and on July 25th [1863] he was again married to Mrs. Emaline Keeser [Keezer] (nee Sager) to them were born 5 children, two of them and also their mother preceeded him to the grave. [Not sure if the two children who predeceased him are Sophia's as previously mentioned as the obit seems to allude that they were Emaline's children who are all accounted for: Reading Jr., Emmy, Effie, David, and Adam???]

He had 35 grandchildren, 26 of whom survive him and four great-grandchildren.

He was brought up in the Evangelical Luthern church with which he identified himself and in which he remained faithful unto death.

His funeral took place at St. John's church on the 22nd, conducted by Rev. J.E. Weaner [?] and his body was laid to rest in the Sherman cemetery.

Mr. Shuler was one of the oldest citizens of this county having lived here over 45 years. He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, a good neighbor, a worthy citizen and a faithful Democrat. He leaves to mourn his death 4 sons and 4 daughters together with their families and many neighbors and friends. Paulding County Library
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have oodles of photos to share and am in contact with many cousins! I am descended from Reading and his first wife Sophia's son William Hamilton Schuler. Thanks for any help you can give me!
Nelson, I don't have my info in front of me but do not fully trust John Levering's account of this Schuler (Showler) family. I believe he added a generation in my line by making a brother and sister the children of their older brother.
Are you descended from the Tunes family that is a part of the Levering dynasty?
I am descended from Elizabeth Schuler and George Nagle from their daughter, Mary Magdalena Nagle. She married Lewis E. Reynolds and ended up in New Orleans. Their son Levering Reynolds would be my Great Grandfather.
I am looking for more information on George Nagle. I can't find anything on him or his parents.
I am willing to share all that I have on my side of the family.
