Daniel Hopkins Schurz, died peacefully on April 12, 2005 and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ellen. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on July 11, 1914, he graduated from University High and the University of Michigan, where he was a swimmer and baseball player and a member of Sigma Phi Fraternity.
During a leave from the Navy, he met and later married Ellen. While in Ann Arbor, he was employed by Argus Camera and later become the Director of Public Relations for Bendix Aerospace. He was very active in the Ann Arbor Rotary, St Andrew's Episcopal Church, a Director of the University Musical Society and served on the Ann Arbor School Board. After moving to Arizona in 1973, Dan sold real estate for Tom Jackson & Associates and became very involved with the Scottsdale Rotary, the Boys' and Girls' Club and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He was nick-named "Mr. Michigan" for his involvement with the University of Michigan Alumnae group, and spent countless hours on many committees for the Fiesta Bowl. He was duly honored as a Life Member of the Fiesta Bowl for creating a program in conjunction with NASA to bring astronaut crews to parades and other Fiesta Bowl events. Through his work with Bendix and later with the astronauts, he was especially proud to attend the launches of Apollo flights #6 through 14.
