George J Schutz, Appleton, Shawano, Antigo

I'm looking for a George J Schutz, who would have immigrated from Germany about 1862. It appears he was a druggist, as I am able to find the Shutz name on drug stores in Appleton in 1896 (782 College Ave), in Shawano around 1900, and Antigo WI on and after 1920.

The Shawano census from June 1900 indicates the following:
George J Schutz, 38, married 15 years, occupation druggist.
Maria T, wife, 34, married 15 years, housewife, born in NY.
All the children indicate born in WI. [Land records have her name recorded as 'Mary T' versus 'Maria T.' ]
Stoddard, 13, son, at school
Benjamin A, 11, son, at school
Claire, 7, daugher, at school
George J (must be Jr.), 1, son, at home
Mary Tonna (but unsure, might be Tuma), 18, servant

The 1905 census indicates all the same excepting the new servant is Ella Sieber, 17, born in WI.

The 1920 Census indicates only George Sr. and George Jr. now reside in Shawano. Land records indicate he sold the house in April 1916. George Sr's marital status has changed to "divorced." The new servant is Anne Owne, 60 years old.

By 1930 census, only George Sr is noted, at age 68, and occupation is "Proprietor" "Drug Store"

After the 1930 census, I could find no further information on George J Schutz, Sr., excepting for a few mentions and a drug store having the Schutz name appearing in Antigo, WI.

I found a draft card for Stoddard Judd Schutz, age 30 at the time and indicating his birthday as 8/24/1886, (Thus must have been signed in 1916) and indicating a Canal Street, New Orleans address, and that he is married but does not name the wife. A 1930 census indicates Stoddard Schutz in Chicago, IL, at age 43, working as a greeting card manufacturer. His wife is Bleve (sp?), age 47, born in IL, but no employment. No children mentioned.

The final family member I could find was a Mark E. Schultz, 85 born 9/11/16, died, 2/11/02, and was the son of late Benjamin and Pauline (Naber) Schutz. Wife, still surving? is Isabel (Denn) Schutz. He also has a sister, Mary Christine (Richard) Boehme of Marco Island FL and a sister in law, Jean Schutz of Sun Prairie, WI. His two brothers, Paul Schutz and Dr. Weston Schutz, preceded him in death.

I am very much interested in this family, since I am living in their former house. I have tracked down land records and believe they bought the land from Charles R. Stier and wife Annie in 1901. This house has not had many owners since, but each has had family members stop back to visit the house, share pictures, and allow me to take new ones to commemorate the families that lived here. Its just a neat house on Franklin Street in Shawano (although the street names and numbers have changd over the years- might have originally been Division street), and deserves to have its history documented. Plus I love to hear the stories.

Any info much appreciated!

Email: Jfairbairn@charter.net

Thanks!!!

Birth Record: Moritz M. Schutz (aka Morris Schultz)

RE: My great grandparents, Morris (Moritz) M. and Bertha (nee Unterberger) Schultz/Schutz

1900 US Census: Listed as Morris/Bertha Schutz from Galicia (Austria). He was born in July, 1864 and emmigrated in 1886, living in Manhattan. (Bertha was born in about June, 1872)

1920 US Census: Listed as Morris/Bertha Shultz (ancestry.com lists them as Shiltz [Shultz]) from Austria, Morris, age 53 (approx. 1867), immigrated 1888, living in Bronx.

1930 US Census: Listed as Morris/Bertha Schultz from Austria, Morris, age 63 (approx. 1867), immigrated 1887, living in Bronx.

A copy of Cedar Grove Cemetery Assoc. (Mt. Hebron section) purchase contract lists Morris as "Morris M. Schultz, aka Moritz M. Schutz", (died May 21, 1940, age 73). (Bertha died on January 27, 1947, age 74--this means she was born in about 1872-73).

QUESTIONS:

1.
1910 US Census: I can't find Morris/Bertha although I have looked using *wildcard

2. Birth Information: I am looking for info. on where Morris was born, but so many possibilities came up and I don't know how to tell, which, if any are correct. A few are listed with their resources below:

In Poland: JRI Vital Records Database (Births) I found---

a. Moritz Schutz born on Jan. 19, 1865 in Miserau (Mizerow, Poland) but I don't know if this was part of Galicia, Austria at the time. (birth registration in Pless), and the date is too early and the month is incorrect, based on most of the info. found in the above census information.

b. Moritz Schutz born on July 22, 1857 in Deutsch Weichsel (birth registration in Pless), but I don't know if this was part of Galicia either and the birth date seems too far off base.

c. Moritz Max Jolles (on a couple of soundex lists, the name Jolles appears when Schultz is plugged in), born April, 1865 [Lviv PSA AGAD births 1863-76, 1900,01]

On immigrant passenger lists I found--

a. Moritz Schutz from "Krakau, Ostereich" (Krakow, Austria) on a Hamburg passenger list on ancestry.com. The ship was the Wieland which departed on May 1, 1887, Hamburg to NY. He was 22 yrs. old. But when I looked at the original list his name appeared to be crossed off.

(In Poland: JRI, Krakow Deaths 1810-54, 69-89, I found the death of a Michael Schutz in 1870. One of Morris's sons was named Michael, could it be he was named after this man found on the list of deaths???)

b. Moritz Schutz on the Eider, leaving Bremen, Germany on Mar. 15, 1887 to NY. But this man was only 18 years old (1869) and he was from "Bohemia" according to the original manifest.
I'm not sure what my next step should be in my search.

Thank you for your help.
MR
Re: Loretta/Joseph/George Schutz, 1900- 1975, (Watertown, WI) and Shutz family from Bavaria?

Thanks for the quick response. As you probably know Schutz and Schultz were pretty popular names with all kinds of spellings. There are several that settled in Watertown, WI. With the documentation I have, he clearly came from Bavaria, (most likely via Le Havre, or Bremen, and his declaration of intent to be a citizen has him arriving in New York, and again indicating he came from Bavaria, as he had to renounce his allegiance to the King there). As indicated I have nothing more about his family in Bavaria for now.

Henry would be Heinrich,or something similar. Records are quite good for Indiana.

Oh how I wish I could connect to you - my husband's Schutz family immigrant was Henry, married to Fredericka; they arrived in New Orleans, lived there a while, and moved north, settling in Posey County Indiana. But this is all deduction; my husband was raised by foster parents so there were never any Schutz folks to ask questions.

Loretta/Joseph/George Schutz, 1900- 1975, (Watertown, WI) and Shutz family from Bavaria?

I have a lot of information on this family, and am trying to verify details. I would appreciate any help if you have Schutz information from the Watertown, WI area, (especially if they originally came from Bavaria).

Main question is verifying the arrival date of George Schutz, in America, and the hometown in Germany, (Bavaria). If you look at the dates below, they don't match up for the arrival times versus Joseph's birth.

George and Mary were married in 1860. My current speculations is Mary might have been pregnant with Joseph when they left Bavaria in 1861/62/63. It would have taken them several months to arrive in the U.S..
Joseph was born in May of 1862,Bavaria and the best ship list I have is arrived in December 1863, New York?

All of the family lived in the Watertown, WI, (Jefferson and Dodge County), area on various farms, or sometimes in Watertown.
I first find George(39)/ Mary(35) in the 1870 census under George Schuls, with 6 children living on a farm in LeRoy, WI.
This becomes George(49)/Mary Schutz(46) in the 1880 census on the same farm in LeRoy.
And finally in the 1900 census George(69)/Mary(64). Says they have been married for 40 years.

The family:
Loretta Ann Sarah Sadie Schutz is my grandmother born in Hubbleton, WI, (1900-1975), and married to William Schultz.
She had three brothers, George, Raymond, and Louis.
Her mother/father were Joseph Schutz and Rose Appenfeld(t).
Jospeh was born February 8, 1871 in LeRoy, WI and died in 1935. His gravemarker says, "Sofe J. Schutz". Here is his obituary:
Obituary Watertown Courier 5 September 1935
Joe Schutz dies suddenly Tuesday
Funeral services will be held today at ST. Henry's Church Watertwon on Friday morning. Septmeber 6th for Joe Schutz, age 64, who died of a heart attack on Tuesday September 3rd.
Joe Schutz son of George and Catherine Schutz, was born February 8, 1871 at LeRoy, WI where he resided for several years. The family then moved to Neosho where he remained for four years and learned the blacksmith trade. Later he moved to Watertown to continue his Blacksmith trade and was married there on February 16, 1898 to Rose Appenfledt at St. Henry's church. A few years after their marriage they moved to a farm near Sun Prarie where they resided for 25 years, and then moved to the Foley farm, north of Waterloo, and later to Hanke farm south of here , for seven years.
Besides his wife he is survived by four children, one daughter Mrs Wm. Schultz Jr, and three sons, George, Raymond, and Louis; five grandchildren; one brother, Louis Schutz and a sister, Mrs. Herman Schoechert.
Mr Schutz dropped dead while working in a corn field at the Tom Fenney farm south of here, one of his neighbors. He was helping fill silo and suffered the attack shortly after dinner. There were other men working in the same field.

Joseph's parents were George Schutz and Mary Adna(sp?).
My best dates are George Schutz, born May 1831, Bavaria Germany, and died September 23, 1901, Wisconsin.
Mary born December 1835 Bavaria, Germany.
I have two possible ship lists, with the most likely being
December 7, 1863, showing barely readable names just using initials. C/G Schutz- 32, M Schutz-28, J Schutz- 2.
Here is what I have on George:
George Schutz- He was born May 1831 in Bavaria, Germany. Immigration Mar 1862 in from Bavaria. He died on 23 Sep 1901 in Wisconsin. Cause of Death was Appendicitis.
Notes for George Schutz: General Notes:
According the the 1900 census they were married for 40 years (1860 married).

Indicated they both arrived, (with Joseph), in the US in 1861, but says living in US for 29 years which does not make sense. Also indicated Joseph Schutz was born in Germany in 1862, again this does not match above? Maybe she was pregnant when they left Germany so he immigrated in 1861 but was born in May of 1862. Immigration would then be between Sept. and Dec. of 1861?
George listed as Pa.
Declaration of intent obtained. Dodge County, 29th Day of October 1867.
Born in Bavaria, 1838(?) which does not match all census of 1831. Landed at Port of New York, May,(or March) 1862. Since the birthdate is wrong, and he just signed with "X", I am just using this document as an indicator of what happened.

(George Schutz WI vital records request for Death Certificate. (need to also look for wife Mary) Searched pre-1907, 1900 to 1904 and 1907 to 1910, with negative result.

Mary Adna. She was born Dec 1835 in Bavaria, Germany. Immigration 1862 in from Bavaria.
Notes for Mary Adna: General Notes:
may also be Mary or Catherine? most of census has as Mary
From Joseph Schutz marriage certificate the mother's name is Mary Adna (hard to make out spelling but starts Ad for sure).

George Schutz and Mary Adna. They were married 1860 in Bavaria, Germany. They had 9 children.
1)	Joseph Schutz. He was born on 16 May 1860 in Bavaria. Immigration 1861. He died on 23 Sep 1901 in Maryville, Wisconsin.

2)	George Schutz. He was born Feb 1863 in LeRoy,WI. He married Anna. They were married 1883.

3) John Schutz. He was born on 06 May 1869 in LeRoy, Wi. He died in Wisconsin.

4)	Barbara Schutz. She was born 1868 in LeRoy,WI. She died in Wisconsin.

5)	Kathrina Schutz. She was born Oct 1869 in LeRoy,WI.

6)	Sarah Schutz. She was born Oct 1869 in LeRoy, Wi.

7) Joseph Schutz. He was born on 08 Feb 1871 in LeRoy, Wi. He married Rosa Appenfeldt. They were married on 16 Feb 1898 in Watertown, WI St. Henry's Church. He died on 03 Sep 1935 in Watertown, WI. Burial in Watertown, WI, St. Henry cemetery.

8) Olga Maria Schutz. She was born Oct 1874 in LeRoy, Wi. She married Herman Edward Schoechert. They were married 1904.

9) Louis Schutz. He was born on 23 Dec 1875 in LeRoy, Wi. He married Jenny. They were married 1903. He died in Milwaukee, WI.

Betty
Try the link below. It's free to register to search the site.
Good luck.

I'm looking for info on my great grandmother, Christine Clara Schütz, who was born in 1854, Metz (Germany at the time). She went by Clara and married Friedrich Lehrke. It is said that she was disowned by her family because they were Catholic and she married a Lutheran. Her father was John and her mother, Sophie according to her death cert. They settled in La Crosse, WI with other Lehrke's. That is all I know about my great grandmother's family. If you or anyone has info on her family I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks. Anyone willing to look this up, please contact me. This is the only obituary I do not have of 11 children and she was the last to die, so you would think it would be the easiest to find.
Betty Reese

Re: Schutz family German origins???

My Schutz family origins are in Thalfroeschen, Germany. Peter Schuetz, his wife Louise Burkhard (also his step-sister) immigrated to Washington County, Illinois. They took a ship at Le Havre France in 1667. The sons were Jacob, Peter, Christian (my great grandfather), Conrad, Daniel and Louise. I have a complete record of their family from Thalfroeshen back three generations to Johann Wendel Schuetz who moved from Weidenthal, Germany before 1780. The oldest Schuetz of this branch that I have a record of is Friedrich Schuetz, a horsesmith/blacksmith of Weidenthal married to a Charlotte Anstatt.

I have a Carl Schuetz married to Elisabeth Roos 1 May 1863. He was a shoemaker in Thalfroeschen. My data ends at about this time, but I have three children of this Carl: Catharina (born 1863, died 1865), who died in infancy, Adam and Carl (b. 1865).

There are some other lines that I have not followed up on and their may be another Carl in one of those. Thalfroeschen was a small place. I have a family researcher in Germany who can clear this up very quickly if you wish to contact him.

I have a Schutz family. Parents are Peter and Katherine Klein. Both born in France. Their birthdates are only estimated. I did not do this research but was given it by another relative.
The children I have are
John, Mikal, Peter, Mary, Carrie (Caroline), Kate, and George.
They settled in St. James, Watonan, Minnesota. George was born in France in 1855 and he is the youngest. So your date of immigration is probably correct. I have been researching his oldest son, John Peter Schutz as he is my direct descendant. Do you think this is the same family?!
Pattee

Hi. My name is Donna Sporlein. This geneaology is really confusing me. I know my relatives lived most of their lives in Chicago area. Any updates you may have, please help. My father, Walter Sporlein's uncle and aunt, I believe Louis and Minnie Sporlein did a written family tree once, and somehow it got lost and thrown away. It was so complete with names, but I cannot believe it got thrown out.
Thanks,

Donna

Hi Pattee,
We could very possibly be related. I am related to Mary Schutz who entered America with her parents and siblings on the Danube. The ship left Hauve port and arrived in New York. The family was registered through Castle Garden. I found the family in the census in Minnesota. In fact that is where Mary my great grandmother met and married William Groskopp, my great grandfather. Feel free to email me direct at mthwsn@pacbell.net - Ann

My great grandfather was John Sheets, born in Ohio about 1866. The 1930 Census shows hit parents were born in Germany, but I don't have any names or dates. I also don't have any siblings. He married my greatgrandmother, Bell (Cummings)in Missouri and the census shows them in Burling Kansas, Coffey County. My father was 8 at the time and lived with them. His hame was Lawrence Eugene Thompson. I have a little more if you're interested.
