Ruth; you have posed a lot of questions if they can be answered it will clear up a lot of things. I wish the family in Wisconsin would be more cooperative. But I don’t see that happening.
As far as Ida Foelster. She was married first to a man named Art Kroegher, he died after they had 2 daughters, Margaret Kroeger Foelster & Viola Kroeger Foelster. Then she married Christ Foelster and had 2 more children Edna Foelster & Harold Foelster. I don’t have any other information on The first husband Art Kroegher, but I was under the impression Christ Foelster had adopted the older 2 daughters. Since they are listed as step sisters, maybe not. Since her mother’s name is given as Ottilie Weber that sounds like maybe Christ Foelster had 2 children and Ida had 2 children when married.
Here is Christ’s obit:
Christ Foelster, second husband d.10 Feb.1961 at the age of 78 in Immanuel Hospital in Mankato. He was a car refinisher for several years and then farmed near Rapidan MN. before coming to Mankato in 1958. His daughter, Edna Foelster, was living with him at the time of his death. Mrs. Ralph Everson, Terre Haute, Indiana was his other daughter. Mr. Ernest Thompson of Denver, Colorado and Harold Foelster were his other children.
Christ came to America from Schleswig Holstein when he was a young child, along with his mother, Marie Krause and father Daniel Foelster.
Christ became a citizen of the US.
According to his death certificate Dr. Wm. Stillwell performed surgery to find out why he had mesenteric thrombosis and learned that Christ had an acute obstruction of the bowel and was anemic. The operation was performed on 1 Feb.1961 and he died on the 10 Feb.
June
Becky; are you willing to share your records & photo with me? I would love to have them. I sending you my snail mail address off list & would be happy to pay coping and mailing costs.
It is too bad you and Ruth can’t get together to share info. Since you are both somewhere in the St. Paul area of Minnesota.
I too do not want to include anyone not related. But I do want to make sure someone is NOT related before I give up on the branch. I would rather err on the side of them being related then not. A few more in the family tree never hurt anything. And maybe somewhere in the future a connection may be found. Maybe somewhere way back in Germany after all Frederick’s parents probably had siblings and there would be descendants there.
My brother is convinced that for some reason the family was original from Sweden and just had a stop over in Germany. Ever hear anything about that? That would make us all Swedish instead of German. But I have never put too much weight into the theory. There is too much evidence of them being from Germany.
June
JUNE: I AM NOT UPSET. I AM JUST VERY CAUTIOUS AS TO WHO CLAIMS A "RELATIONSHIP" TO WHOM. I SPENT TWO YEARS UNTANGLING ONE WOMAN WHO WAS ADAMANT ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER, WILHELMINA SCHWEDE, BEING THE DAUGHTER OF HER GREAT-GRANDMOTHER. I WENT TO REDWOOD COUNTY, MN GOT ALL THE MARRIAGE, DEATH AND BIRTH RECORDS AND PROVED MY FAMILY WAS NO RELATION TO HERS, UNFORTUNATELY, SHE HAD POSTED THE INFO TO THE INTERNET AND, CONSEQUENTLY, SEVERAL OTHER INNOCENT RESEARCHERS HAVE LINKED THEIR FAMILIES WITH MINE. I DOCUMENT EVERYTHING I DO AND CORRECT WHAT IS INCORRECT. THERE WERE SCHWEDES (QUITE A FEW FREDRICKS) IN MISSOURI, LOUSIANA, AND TEXAS. THEY ARE NO RELATION TO MY BRANCH. I DO NOT WANT TO SEND ANY PHOTOS OR GEN. MATERIALS TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NO DOCUMENTATION OF A RELATIONSHIP. I HAVE MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S GERMAN BIBLE AS WELL AS MY GRANDFATHER'S WITH THEIR FAMILY RECORDS; AS I SAID BEFORE, ONLY SIBLING MENTIONED IS HIS BROTHER, AUGUST, IN KENOSHA, WI. AS TO ST. PAUL HISTORY CENTER, PERHAPS I EXPECTED TOO MUCH. I BELIEVE NARA IS A MUCH BETTER SOURCE. I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SUPPLY MATERIALS TO THE LADY, HOWEVER, SHE MUST BE ABLE TO SHOW A DIRECT FAMILY LINK. THERE ARE IMMIGRATION RECORDS, CENSUSES, PROPERTY RECORDS, TAX RECORDS, OBITUARIES, ETC. AVAILABLE. THESE CAN BE USED TO ESTABLISH A LINK.
BECKY

Ruth, I have to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ for all the research you have done on behalf of the Schwede family. I am always interested in learning about new branches of the family and more about the branches I already know about.
I already knew Frederick had 2 brothers, August and Ferdinand in the US, but it was great learning about Marie, the sister. She may have been the oldest sibling as her birthdate in 1830, Frederick in 1834 & Ferdinand about 1839. We don’t have August’s birthdate yet.
We also know he left at least 2 younger brothers in Germany. From this account by by Mable Moseng [Bott] who would be a grand daughter of Frederick:
“Grandpa Schwede [Frederick ] gave up his birth right to his 2 younger brothers and left Germany so he wouldn't have to fight for the 'Kaiser.' Upon landing in the US. he was promptly forced into the Union Army fighting in the Civil War.
He marched with Sherman on his famous "March through Atlanta to the Sea."

I am hoping I can get a complete run down of Marie’s family to add to my tree.
Thanks Again
June
I have been on research trail for last 5 weeks. I was very disappointed in St. Paul information. As to the lady claiming to have info on a sister, I do not believe this is so. I have all the original obits and records for the Schwede family and have traveled through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and ND gathering the records for last five yrs. The Schwedes in Texas and Louisiana are not related to our branch. My mother, Lillian Schwede, born in 1902 to eldest son, William Schwede and Wilhelmina Kohlman, knew great grandfather well. He only mentioned one sibling in US....his brother, August, in Kenosha. I would have to see documentation regarding this claim.. Becky Woods

My last name is spelled Schweida which is close to they way you spell your great grandfathers name. My great great grandfather moved from Bohemia to the U.S. in the late 1800's around the same time as your great grandfather. His name was Joseph Charles Schweida and he had a son (my great grandfather) named Charles Joseph Schweida who was born in the U.S. I don't know if they're connected in any way but i thought the spelling was so close that they might be, let me know if you find anything interesting about it!
good luck
I am sending you an email with some pictures, if you don’t get it let me know.
First, and this might be a really dumb question on my part, but what does GAR mean?
The Schwedes I have are descendants of Fred & Augusta. I have the picture of him in his army uniform; I never realized it was a 50th anniversary picture. I don't think any of this part of the family did. I am not sure you are aware of this. Fred & Augusta and many of there children and now grandchildren are buried in a cemetery about 45 minutes from me, close to where all the children homesteaded here. Most of those homesteads are still in the families. I remember many happy times at gatherings at those homes when I was a child.
I do have his complete civil war record. I ordered it a few years back when I was really into this research.
As far as pictures, I don't think I have any others of Fred & Augusta. I probably have a picture of their tombstone someplace. It is huge.
I have some pictures of those you mentioned. I have several of my grandparents of course, although he died when I was quite young. I have one of him holding me; they say I was the only grandchild he ever held. Seems strange since I was one of the youngest, not sure if it is true or not.
I also have pictures of Alvina, Herman, August, maybe Louis. Most of these I don't have scanned in, but they are in my albums.
As far as William in Wisconsin. We have talked to someone in that family but don’t have much infom.
I also have some information on the Lena who married William Wellhausen and moved to Oregon.
June
I HAVE MY GRANDFATHER, WILLIAM, ALVINA, LENA, HERMAN, AUGUSTA AND LOUIS.
I am very interested in contacting you about Frederick G. Schwede and Augusta C. Bartz. I am doing research for an 86 yr. old woman in Louisiana, who
says that Frederick is a brother of Marie Louise Fredericke Schwede. Marie is this woman's great grandmother.
I also noted that a brother was mentioned who was living in Kenosha WI.
I know that this woman would love a picture of Frederick and Augusta on their 50th wedding anniversary. They were living in New Ulm, Minnesota at this time. I would also like a picture of their tombstones in the Aurelia Cemetery.
I have a copy of their death certificates if you are interested. I do research at the Minnesota History Center.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Becky,
I reread your note and did not quite understand about your disappointment with St.Paul either with what I had written or the History Center in St.Paul. Would you please explain what you meant?
I do not discount your research, but merely asked about what I was told. How can one find out unless one asks questions? I had no intent of upsetting anyone, but that sounds like what I have done. If that is the case, I am sorry, but how would I know I had done such a thing. It is all very innocent on my part.
You will still be given credit for your work, no doubt about it! Take care...Ruth in Blaine, Mn

Family people do provide a wealth of knowledge. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might go about finding Marie Louise Schwede? The woman who contacted me said that she was from Freidheide, Pommern Germany. According to Frederick Gotlieb Schwede he was from Varhan or some such place. This was in the statement spoken by Frederick Schwede when Augusta applied for a pension because Frederick had been in the Civil War and was not feeling well.
I have found more info on your family through searches that I have done in St.Paul. It sounds as though the people at the History Center were not too helpful. I am sorry to hear that. I have been able to gather some data to help fill in info about some of the family members through reading newspapers and finding obituaries. You probably have all of these .
I will be happy to share anything that I have been able to find to help you. You have an awesome task that brings about a large and ever growing relationship.
I in no way wish to make things difficult or upsetting to you. I have been working on this due to my friend from Louisiana, who sent me the Schwede name. Since I have not found much about Germany as of today, I cannot prove from which Schwede family this person originates.
Thank you for responding.
Johann SCHWED m. 1841 Maria Christina BETZ (in Germany)

Maria Christina BETZ, b. 17 Feb 1816 in Feilbingert, Rheinpfalz, Bayern, Germany. She, a protestant, married (also in Feilbingert) on 21 Nov 1841 to Johann SCHWED, a Catholic tailor.

They had at least two children, baptized in the protestant church in Feilbingert:

Philippina Schwed, b. 19 Mar 1842
Henrietta Schwed, b. Sept. 1844

While most of Maria Christina's siblings emigrated with their parents to Buffalo, NY (between 1835 and 1846), we have found NO evidence that Maria Christina and her husband Johann Schwed also emigrated. But we also have found no evidence that they remained in Feilbingert, either.

I searched for SCHWED in the 1850 census-- any state-- and found nothing. But perhaps SCHWEDE is a likely spelling for the same name? Any SCHWEDEs seen a SCHWED spelling?

-- Jillaine
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine
