Please count me in on this one. This sounds like my husband's family, also, but I don't have the William. Our tie is through their son, George and we are in PA. George's daughter married a Moyer whose daughter married a Salter, which is us.

I have John being born in Kea, Cornwal, moving to Probus, then Swansea, then to US.

Scobles - Woolwich, London

I'm interested in researching the family history of Scoble. The Scoble family in question lived in Woolwich, London at the time of the 1891 census. The head of family, William (44) and his wife Mary (37) lived at 16 Gildersome Street, Woolwich, along with their 9 children William (17), boy (14), Alf (12), Mary (8), James (7), Thos/Thomas (6), Elizabeth (4), Jos (2) and Ellen (1). William Snr is quoted as being born in Ireland, Mary in Tintagel (Cornwall). All but the last 3 children were born in Scotland, these were born in Woolwich.
Thos or Thomas went on to marry Ann Grant. At the moment I'm not too sure how many children they had apart from my GrandMother Constance Minnie Scoble who married Alfred Wooler in 1935.

They had a son, John M. Scoble, b. Jan. 1833 in London, England, died 20 Mar 1865 in Baltimore, MD of disease while POW Civil War. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Tool and children George Edward, Martha Jane, and Delphina. Can anyone relate to any of the Scobells (Scobles)?
I thought I remember the name.
So far, there are not many Wicks's from the three men in Tywardreath- in England. Some of the later ones to come
state side, did return, then return to the states. A couple of the girls remained in England it appears.
One thing that might be of help to you and "London" was it
must have been an easy port to get to, and also not
as costly. As I have family from Odessa use the port to
come to the US (another son used Ireland!).

The first spelling for Richards name was Scoville. But the
census spells the name Scoble.
Richard was born about 1866 in England. He married in
1893 in Dickinson County, Michigan to Lydia may or Mary
Jeffery or Jeffrey. She was born in 1875 in Michigan.
Her parents were William and Lydia (Wicks) Jeffrey.
The census shows the following children:
Ella born 1893 in Michigan
Walter born 1895 in Michigan
Richard born 1899 in Idaho or Iowa
Clarence born about 1902 Michigan
Ada born about 1904 in Montana
Mildred born about 1906 in Montana

In 1900 the family was in Lewis and Clark County, Montana.
1920 they were with family in Michigan.

I found a Clarence Scoble who married age 21 to
(Suencie? Susie?) who was from England. They
had a son Richard, born about 1925 in Michigan.
This was the 1930 census.
Walter was single in the 1930 census.

Would very much like to know more about the family.
What happened to the parents, children?

I was interested to know of your association with Ecoville/Escoville in Normandy. That idea had crossed my mind and I have often visited that area as a French teacher with school groups. However there seems to be a strong link with S Devon(near Salcombe) and someone suggested that the name is of old Saxon origin

Hi! There is a farm called Scoble across the river at Salcombe Devon England. It was advertised for sale some years ago. I couldn't afford it!
My great grandfather moved into Plymouth from a village called Yealmton (South Devon) in the 19th cent. However his people had been farmers but three generations ran butchers shops in the centre of Plymouth.
Reading the correspondence reminded me of a Scoble from the river Fal area who was a ships pilot, also in the 19th cebtury. When I began teaching it was in Falmouth, Cornwall

Re: Scobles - Woolwich, London

There is a surname error in my previous post - The Scoble family in question lived in Woolwich, London at the time of the 1891 census.
Thos or Thomas went on to marry Ann GIBSON. Ann Gibson was born in Plumstead although her family had lived in India, her parents ( William and Eliza J Gibson ) having married there. Thomas and Ann Scoble had two daughters, Constance Minnie Scoble (b.12.06.1912) and Maisy Scoble. My GrandMother Constance Minnie Scoble married Alfred Wooler in 1935.

Scoble Surname

Dear Kieron, I have researched our Scoble links for some time and have concluded that it is of French origin. From the place Escoville now known as Ecoville. located in Calvados in the arrondissment of Caen , Normandy. There is also rumour that it maybe of Scottish origi. My GG Grandfather Urias Scoble 1800 Gwennap Cornwall- 1902 Victoria Aust. was photographed in 1860's with a jacket bearing the pocket insignia of a laurel wreath around a fleur-de-lyse( french )and a coronet at the top. This motiff has led me to believe the name has french connections. Regards Linda from Oz.
