Re: Where did we come from ? The Answere is>>>> BOTH

Hi all. I am the admistrator of the SCOGGIN/SCROGGINs/SCOGIN etc surname study at Family Tree DNA and what we have found is that there are to main lines of the family.

Firstly there are people in each of the lines with the last name spelled a variety of ways so dont let that sidetrack you.

One line descends from a Johan Skogan/Shagan (seems spelling was not so important and by the second generation it was something like Scoggin) or something like that, who came from Sweden to "new Sweden" in the 1640s and the other most likely from a John Scoggin who came from England to Virginia in the 1650s.

Now there may have been other emigrants by the name but no one has identified any and we know these two lines have been here since then and there is quite a bit of information on them.... but not enough.

You can take a look at the DNA study at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Scoggin_Scroggins_Scogga...

then click on the links on the left.. the "YDNA" link shows the chart of the tests and the "Results" page shows a little history of some of the lines.

I would like to suggest everyone see if they have a male relative already participating and if NOT... we can get a discount for a male testee in your line (its not cheap) by going through the study.

feel free to email me with any comments of suggestions or questions.

patrick.Scoggin@gmail.com
Marriage of Miss Mamie Sue Scogin to Mr. Charles R. Evans

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 22 September 1893 ...

Evans - Scogin Nuptials

Married at Newbern, Virginia, the ancestral home of the bride, on Wednesday evening, September 20, at half past 8 o'clock, Rev. James A. Huffard officiating, Miss Mamie Sue Scogin, of Dallas, to Mr. Charles R. Evans, of Roanoke, Virginia.

The wedding was a quiet one from the fact of its taking place while the bride with her mother and sisters were visiting relatives in the old home, where over fifty years ago the grandparents of the bride were duly married. It was indeed a feast of loving hearts, as many were reminded of that night so many pears ago, and tender memories dwelt in harmony with the friends who had gathered to bid God speed to the happy young couple. Mr. I. L. Hawkins, one of Roanoke's representative, business men, acted as best man, while Miss Fannie Virginia Scogin, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Mr. Will R. Scogin, of St. Louis, and brother of the bride, with their mother and little sister, Mattibel, formed a pleasing picture as they stood near.

Immediately after the ceremony and loving congratulations had been extended - in the same old dining room where grandparents and friends had feasted - a veritable Virginia spread was very much enjoyed by the immediate friends and relatives of the contracting parties. On Thursday morning good-byes were said, the happy couple leaving for Washington and New York, where they will spend a month, returning to Roanoke, which in the future will be their home.

Miss Mamie Scogin formerly lived in this city with her parents, where the family occupied a high social position and were held in high esteem by a large number of friends. Miss Mamie was especially a favorite in Terrell society and was much missed when she removed with her parents several years ago to Dallas. Of Mr. Evans, the groom, we learn that he is a young man of excellent business qualities, being at present the cashier of the Roanoke Savings Bank. He is a brother of the ex-mayor of Roanoke, a place of over 20,000 inhabitants.

The many friends of Miss Mamie will be pleased to learn of the happy nuptial event, and will join with the Times-Star in wishing to the happy pair their full allotment of earthly happiness.

Just found this thread. When my dad, James Scoggins, was in WWII, he met a Norwegian while in Europe. The Norwegian told him that the name meant "by the fjord" in his language. I have no idea if that is true but it seemed possible since the guy seemed sincere. Before then, my dad had assumed his name was of Irish or English origin. Fact is, quite a few Vikings enjoyed the British isles. My family certainly has maintained the "glow in the dark" white complexion to make us look Scandinavian.
Sherry Scoggins

We have several tests at the lab at the moment and one or two already in. It would be great to have a male with the surname of Scoggin/Scroggins in your line participate as it will tie us all together and confirm a lot of peoples research. I wonder if you might know of a direct male decendant that would take advantage of our group savings of some 30% and particiapte in the study. IF so please conatact me at jscoggin@nmsu.edu
thanks

Well I cant tell you at the moment what the name in Scandinavia ment but I agree with you that it was a Viking setteler in the Norfolk Co area of Engalnd that brought the name there. In a dictionary of English surnames you will find a definition as "ideler, fool or baffon or son thereof". I was hurt when I first read that untill I dicovered that the very first book ever printed on the subject of humor was one called "scoggans jests". King Edward 4th was it? in the 1400s had a court official now referred to as jester by the name of one John Scoggan/Scoggin... thus the meaning of the name. (he is refferd to in one of SHakespears playes when one of the characters describes Falstaff as the one 'who broke scoggans head". he was a cousin of Richard Scoggin who was poet loreate (spelling?) to the court and a correspondet of Chaucers.

I think he may have lived in Tallapoosa County Alabama before this, because his son, George Andrew was married here. He is not listed in the 1860 census, he was born 1857or 1858. He may have been born in Georgia, he has relatives in Winston County who were born there, but I am not sure of the relationship. I didn't find any of them in the Wright Scogin geneology. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Scogin Family Information

Hello! The Scogins on the wagon train trail must have made friends with the Eures. When I first started this genealogy over the internet, someone told me one of the Eures from Texas went back and married into the distant Eure cousins, McNairs in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Eures were first in Leake County, MS from around ALbermarle Bay, NC. I find that Laura Ewer A.R. married John W. Scogin. Keeping the name spelled the same is interesting, but back in the piney woods, don't you think this unusual name is one and the same with the scroggins, scoggins? Love, that's all I have left in this world. Elaine E. Henderson
