Hi John,

Well, just to add to the conversation you were having with Maggi, I think I belong to another branch of the Scotland family, although some of the similarities are striking.

My father, John Scotland was born in Birmingham (England, not alabama!!), son of Archibald Scotland who moved to England from Stenhousemuir in Scotland, where he married Catherine McGregor.

Archie was in turn the son of John Scotland and Margaret Dow Taylor (a coincidence?) who lived in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

John was (reputedly) the son of William Scotland and (presumably more definately) Helen King.

Obviously anything before this is a little speculative, but I can trace William back another 2 generations to John and Andrew (b1787).

For your information, during my searches I came across a lot of Scotlands involved in the shipping trade (owners, masters, warehousemen etc) living in the same region. I still have most of this info if it may be of any help to you. It does seem that there were a few families called Scotland living near the east coast, and there probably is some conection somewhere along the line. Have you heard the theory that the name originates from a small village called Scotlandwell near Stirling?

Thanks for setting up the board. There dont appear to be many of us left in Britain now. Mostly in the US and Canada like yourself.

Regards,
Robert Scotland

Tom - Sorry; it seems that "your" Catherine [Kate] Scotland and "my" Catherine [Kate] Scotland are two different ladies. According to information from her g-dau and g-son-in-law, "my" Catherine [Kate] Cameron Scotland was born in Dunfermline on 12 November 1873. She married a fellow named Thomas Young. All the information shared between her g-dau/g-s-i-l and me coincides spot-on for parents, siblings, dates, birth and home locations, family lore, etc., and was confirmed by my mother, Kate Scotland's now-90 y-o niece.

I wish you luck in finding "your" Kate - I hope you'll keep the board members posted on your results as I'm sure there are many others out there looking for the same Catherine "Kate" Scotland (>Gardiner) family you are. Again, sorry. maggi.
She married John Patrick Callaghan around 1865 to 1974, if they got married! cannot find a trace of wedding cert.

Looking at this list I take it that there are not that many "Scotland"s around?

would be interested in a brief history of the scotland family name if any one has the time.

Am tied up searching the Callaghans at the moment, but would love the notes for my future research.

Thank you
Keren Callaghan

Tom:
The "solid" information I have from Marjorie Stuart (Small) Scotland -wife of John Scotland- for the branch is:

Thomas Scotland married Martha Dow.

Their son, Robert Scotland, married Margaret Gibson (dau of David and Catherine Cameron Gibson).

Robert and Margaret (Gibson) Scotland’s children were: Thomas Scotland, Catherine Scotland, David Scotland, Martha Scotland, Robert Scotland, Margaret Scotland, and John Scotland (b. “Kingsbarns, near St. Andrews” 11 December 1884 and married Marjorie Stuart (Small) Scotland 5 March 1913.)

I have a photo of John Scotland and his birth family – I’m guessing he is between 8 and 12 in the family portrait. It looks as if the three girls are older than he – although one might be about his age…she does not have her hair pinned up as do the other two girls. The notation on the back of the photo says it was “taken about 1895.” Also from the notation, Kate’s location in the group shows Kate as being one of the 2 daughters with ‘grown up’ hair; from the looks of it, I’d guess Kate (Catherine) to be at least 17 or 18 years old – Meg/Margaret, with ‘little girl’ hair in the picture, would be the one closer to John’s age.

If Marjorie Stuart (Small) Scotland listed the children of Robert and Margaret Scotland in their birth order (in the information she gave me,) the family picture I have of them would coincide with the ‘ages’ they appear to be “about 1895” … but that would place Catherine having been born well before 1887. From the picture, and with John Scotland being about 10 in the photo, I’d guess that Catherine/Kate would have been born around 1875-1879 – a full decade earlier than you have on file for her. On the other hand, possibly the notation of which child is which on the back of the photo has Catherine/Kate and Margaret/Meg switched…in which case, Catherine/Kate would be the one looking more of an age with John, but still much older than she could possibly have been if she had been born in in1887.

Do you have confirmation that Kate/Catherine Scotland was born in 1887 and not in the decade prior?

Hmmm – this is turning into a real puzzler… maggi.
Re: John Scotland

Tom:
The John Scotland (dau. Margaret) I am related to never, to my knowledge, lived anywhere but in 'the old country' (Kingsbarn, Dunfirmline, Edinburgh) and along the North American west coast - specifically: Vancouver, BC. Canada; the Yukon Territories, Canada (John and dau. Margaret); and the Seattle, Washington area (dau. Margaret.)

Margaret Gibson Scotland was born at "Rose Cottage" in Dunfirmline in Nov 1917 while her sister, Rosina Cant Scotland, and mother, Marjorie Stuart Small Scotland, stayed with Marjorie's folks there. (Marjorie and Rose had been in Vancouver prior to the outbreak of The Great War; Rose having been born in Vancouver.) John Scotland, Marjorie's husband and the girl's father, was in the Crimea when Margaret was born, an engineer on a military ship plying the Euphrates River. (He was not notified of Margaret's birth until March of 1918 - it took that long for the telegram to get to him!)

John 'picked up' Marjorie, Rose, and Margaret from Dunfirmline in 1919-20 and they all headed back to Vancouver where a 3rd daughter, Marjorie (May) was born in, I believe, 1921. John also had a son by a woman in the Yukon Territory - I do not know when the son was born but Margaret mentioned (in the only time -that I know of- she has discussed it) that the boy was about her (Margaret's) age [although, I think he might have been a couple of years younger]. I believe the child was born in Skagway, the city where John stayed over the summer months as he worked as a paddle-boat engineer on the Yukon River.

In talking with Margaret last evening, apparently John's brother, David Scotland (and his family), made it to the Dallas, Texas area years and years ago. Margaret said neither she nor her immediate family ever visited the 'David Scotland' branch when she was growing up and she doesn't know if they are still in Texas or if they've all scattered (...travel and communications certainly were not what they are now.)

I'll have to check with Margaret to see if she ever actually "met" her Aunt Kate after leaving Dunfirmline/Scotland at 2 1/2-years old, or if Aunt Kate -like her Uncle David- were part of the fabric of her life after (her) leaving Scotland only through letters, family stories, and tales of kinship related to her by her parents.

All this by way of saying: Margaret Gibson (Scotland) Bennett (dau. of John Scotland) never lived in Michigan. It seems, though, that if all the Scotland given-names of my branch and your branch are the same, and if the dates, locations, and whatnot are the same, we are probably talking about the same folks...and are related through the same folks. We just have to figure out *how*. I'm game; are you? maggi.

Hi John, could you let me know where you got the info from about the scotlands?

There are 2 Phoebe Scotlands, the first one Phoebe Charlotte, B Dec 1844 is the daughter of William and Emma, and she shows up in the census', sometimes twice!! as her mother books her down as living with them while she is married and with her husband, mine unfortunatley was born July 1845 to Margaret Critchely and what looks like James or John Scotland. I have never been able to get any info on them.

I have followed the Phoebe Saults / Alexander Scotland family, and wondered if you had any different info apart from what is in the cenus' and on the IGI?? I have seen Alexander and Phoebe, but not the Patrick, where does he fit in?

My Phoebe's father is shown as Mariner on her birth cert, then deff as a John Scotland rope maker, deceased, on her marriage cert. sadly her spouse John Patrick Callagahn's father was also called John, so it could be a mistake......but I am struggling to find any John SCotlands in and around Liverpool that fit the bill! The closest I have is in Manchester he is a merchant in the 1841 census.

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated as i have hit one big brick wall with this now.
Cheers
Keren

Tom: Thanks for the information. I was talking to John Scotland's daughter, 90-year old Margaret, this evening and mentioned that you'd posted Catherine Scotland Gardiner's dates and spouse information. She was wondering if -or how- you are related to her "Aunt Kate"?

And she was really tickled that someone 'out there' knew about her Aunt Kate ... I, too, marvel at the advances in electronics allowing such a sharing to be made. Ain't the Internet 'bout the neatest thing since sliced bread?)

Again, thanks for the information on Catherine. maggi.

Hello, I read your posting and am quite intrigued. My grandfather was David Scotland and he married my grandmother, Mary Imlach, who's mother was a Miller. My grandparents settled in Saskatchewan. David Scotland was a circuit jugde and police officer there. The Millers are related to the Moires chocolate family. We traced the Scotland family name back to William Wallace and cousined to Robert Bruce, but cannot get any further. David Scotland had four sons, David, Donald, William, Keith, and a daughter, Jean, diceased at childhood. My grandfather's sister, Jean, married a Captain William Rose in Scotland. If you have any connections to us, I would love to hear from you.
Sincerely, Marilyn Scotland

John Scotland

I'm so glad we finally have a board for the surname Scotland! How much easier it will be to search for our kin.

My grandfather was John Scotland. He was born in Kingsbarns (near St. Andrews) 11 December 1884. He was the son of Robert Scotland [s/o Thomas Scotland and Martha Dow Scotland] and Margaret Gibson Scotland [d/o David Gibson and Catherine Cameron Gibson]. His siblings were Thomas Scotland, Catherine Scotland, David Scotland, Martha Scotland, Robert Scotland, and Margaret Scotland.

Grandfather John Scotland married my grandmother, Marjory Stuart Small, 5 March 1913 in Dunfirmline, Scotland. They moved to Vancouver where their 1st and 3rd daughters were born (29 Dec 1913 and 30 Oct 1920 respectively) - their 2nd daughter, my mother, was born 20 Nov 1917in Dunfirmline. The family lived in Vancouver, BC, Canada and Grampa John worked on the paddle-wheel ships that traveled up the Yukon. He died in Vancouver on 22 July 1954 and Marjory died on 8 October 1979, also in Vancouver.

Surnames on my maternal side are: Dow, Gibson, Scotland, Small, Stuart, Motion, Cameron, Cant, Leach, Walker, and Young. I have a listing of family members compiled by my grandmother Scotland, starting with the 29 Nov 1800 marriage of her gggrandparents Peter Small and Mary Walker Small in Scotland, and will be happy to share what I have. m.

Hello Marilyn

Searching the Scotland surname and find very little. Margaret Scotland is my wifes GG Grandmother. We believe she was born abt 1828, perhaps in Falkirk Stirling, Scotland. On April 16 1848 she married William Witherspoon in Falkirk Scotland and they had 6 children - Margaret, Catherine, John, William, Alexander, and Walter.
William Witherspoon, born May 1865 married Jane Raynolds and they had a daughter Margaret Scotland Witherspoon, born Dec 05 1888 in Dyke Head Lanarkshire, Scotland. Margaret married a William Davidson in Vancouver BC in 1909 (this is my wifes grandmother).

Does any of this fit in the Scotland family you have been researching? If so would love to hear from you.
