Don,

I saw the name Kelly, and we are surely related. It occurred to me after my last post, that two Scoville sisters married two Kelly brothers back in Cambria County PA.
Mae Scoville married Patrick, and Dora (Dorothy) married John. Marshall L. Scoville was in the Civil War, his dad was Marshall...etc. Lineage is the same.
I have the whole tree - but I never could get all those Kelly's sorted, since one lived on the "Twin ROcks" famr, and one in the Chicoree Mountain farm....

Sally, your cuz' in Seattle

Hope you are still out here looking around.

Dear Don,

I am a descendant of the Marshall Scoville you have pointed out. He lost his arm in the Civil War, as he was heading down through the south with the Sherman troops that eventually went on to Savannah. My family was from Geauga County Ohio, and are from the John line of Scovilles. (There were two brothers who came to America).
Another large group of Scovilles moved to Ohio around 1810 with my family, but they moved to Trumball County Ohio. Some stopped where the Indian trail at that time ended in Asthabula County Ohio.
I did run across Thomas and Andrew when looking up my family, but I am sorry - that was years ago, and I have finally pitched my notes. Go to the yahoo Scoville group for help.

Sally

Where was Ann born? I'm looking for the parents of Mary Ann Scoville b. 1828 in Canada. She married Joseph Wiliam Bates, 1845 in Gore Dist. Canada. She is listed in the 1850 IL census with Mary Ann Bates and Hannah Bates with a bunch of Scoville's and Elizabeth Scoville. Elizabeth would be her mom. It says on Mary Ann's death certificate that her parents were from NY and NJ. In the 1850 census it says that Elizabeth is from Canada. I can't find any info. on this family. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello Scovilles and DeScovilles,

My GGM was a Scoville. I have merged with the many Scoville trees and found they all report the exact same error. John DeScoville was reported to born in 1206. His father William DeScoville was reported to be born in 1214. William obviously didn't father John when he was only 8 years old. The first tree was wrong and all others just copied.

Any ideas how to correct?

John

I am the daughter of Tonia Scoville, daughter of John Scoville. Our family name did not end in an e untill a few decades ago. My grandfather (John) owned a huge leather bound bible with angles on the front. Located on the inside was about 2" inches of paper of a historical family tree. This book was stolen from us 30 years ago. We are desperately trying to find it. Pleas if you have any info do tell. I have been told stories we are related to the duke of england.

Hi:

It sounds like you are doing all you can to find your records. I have the same problem in Ohio a little later too. You might try a little farther afield such as the Ohio Gen Society in Mansfield, at least I think that is where it is. Also that are is covered by the Firelands so I think there might be records in either http://winslo.state.oh.us/services/genealogy/
or http://www.cyndislist.com/ or
you also might try some of the county libraries. I'm sorry I'm not much help. I have used the Brainard book but I haven't found much more than that on the collateral lines.

You also might try genforum or the Scoville list, but that one is mostly Arthur Scoville, not our line.

Good Luck, Diane

Hi, Diane, The Reuben Scovill/Scoville (married Mabel Andrus of Waterbury, CT) I am researching is #64 in Brainard's book, The Scovils or Socvills in Engalnd and America pages 228-229. It is available on line at the Scoville website. He is related to Amasa, Obediah, Selden, and Asa Scoville lines. Sally Fabro wrote me last year that she had visited Burton and Claridon Townships the year before. She checked the Pioneer Cem. in Burton and the cemetery in Claridon looking for Reuben's grave without success. She visited the Historical Society and the Chardon Library, which has a genealogy center as well. The only probate records listed in Geauga Co. are for Reuben's son, George W. My guess is that the records from 1853 aren't comprehensive and some families buried their relatives on their own lands. Marshall was living in town in Claridon township when he died, so I would think he would be buried there in the cemetery...but then...who knows! The area is still very rural is my understanding from corresponding with Sally. The houses and shops are gone and the Historical Society has moved some of the old buildings into a village, called Century Village. Sounds like an interesting place to visit some day....I don't know anything about Munson.

Do you know of any cemeteries in Munson?

I do not know where they were burried either. I only had the birth date for Rueben.

I do not know if this will help you. Diane

I checked my records and I had quite a bit of information on the Scovill/Scoville family. I had some census records and info that I had gleaned from various stray sources. But...the bulk of my information, particularly the narrative that pulled it all together, came from a descendant of Marshall Scoville, Rueben's son. Sally Fabro of Edmonds, WA has been my source for the majority of this info. You may have corresponded with her already and have the information that she sent me. She wrote a 10 pg. "narrative history" of Reuben's family and descendants. She sent a copy to the Chardon Public Library. In it, there is no mention of the exact site of Reuben or Marshall's burial other than the townships. Reuben is listed as dying in Burton in 1853 and Marshall is listed as dying April 8, 1895 in Munson, Geauga County, Ohio. Reuben's widow, Clarissa, my ancestor, was living with her son from a previous marriage in Adrian, Lenawee Co., MI in 1860. While there is a possibility that Reuben was buried in Adrian, everything points to their being buried in Geauga Co., OH. Sally may know more. If you haven't already but would like to contact her, let me know. If you send your address by private e-mail, I will forward it to her. Hope this helps some. Good luck!

I'm so glad to make contact with a descendant. I've been researching other lines and doing other things for since I posted this note. I don't know his burial site or the site of his son, Marshall, and assume you have the little bit of info that I gathered last year on the family. I'll refamiliarize myself with what I've gathered and will post a reply if I come across something of interest.

This is also my family, from my mother's line, and I have some information on my website:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dollface/GeneralGen...

That's actually a sort of index page, and you'll have to select the Scovills from the list. I thought that you also might be interested in the other lines - Jensen, Dunn, Gentry, perhaps. I can't remember right now if they're far enough back to be likely to be interesting to you or not. I'm forever forgetting how Lucius figures in, because he's not in my direct line. I have a little bit of my pedigress & family group sheets posted, but the information isn't complete, so if you see anything that looks interesting, let me know & I'd be happy to send you a file. I'd also love to see what sort of information you have - especially your source information if you're willing to share it, because that's something that I'm somewhat lacking in. Much of my information came from my mother & her siblings, from research that was done by my grandmother, & she didn't keep good records of her sources, or else the records perished sometime between then and now. So Mom's pretty sure the information's good, but I'm still trying to check and veryfy everything that I can.

Is the Joel that you're talking of the Joel, son of Amasa Scovill and Esther Merrill? He does appear in my family group charts, if that's him, but I have next to nothing on him, I'm thinking. Anyway, the long and short of it is that I've got information, so if you see a good connection, I'd love to swap with you.
DoriAnn

Dori, I am researching Reuben Scovil/Scoville who lived in and around Burton, Geauga Co. OH from 1815 to his death around 1844-54. He was b. in CT ca 1765 and seems to have married Mabel Andrus. His wife died in 1815. He had children: Olive, William, George, John and Marshall. I think he is the Reuben Scovill who married the widow of David Strong and Wait Burdick, Clarissa Campbell, in Portage Co., OH in 1824. She was born in CT in 1775 and was living with her son, Nathan Strong in Adrian, MI in 1860. Do you know this Scoville family? Is it related to your Scovill/Scovilles? Thank you for any help you might offer. This is the infor received from the library nearby.

From Hudson, OH Library, Portage Co. Marriages
Rueben Scovill m. Clarissa Burdick 23 Apr 1824
Wait Burdick m. Clarissa Strong, 15 Jan 1816
Henry Wallace m.

Hi- Lucius Scovil was born near Harwinton, Litchfield County, CT- the son of Roswell and Anna Ames Scovil. Lucius' second wife was Elizabeth Scull- I think she was born in NJ- they are both buried at Cambridge, Henry Co. IL. They lived at Peoria, IL in the 1850 census and at Cambridge in 1870 census. Their children: Francis (f) b. 1839 IL, Benjamin Pulaski 30 Oct 1843 IL, Lucius Perry 30 Nov 1846 IL, Elizabeth Jane 5 Mar 1848 IL, Ann Ellen 5 Sept 1851 IL, John Harry 1 Feb 1853 Peoria, IL, George Roswell 26 Mar 1856 IL, and Sarah Angeline 27 Feb 1860 IL.
I descend from Lucius' brother Pulaski Scovil who came to IL in the 1830s- he lived in Warren, Fulton and Mason Counties in IL. Other brothers also came to IL.
Marguerite Butzow
St. Joseph, IL

I don't have any information on Mabel's parents, but I think we are researching the same line of Scovilles. Your ggrandfather, Edward, appears to be the brother of my gggrandmother, Salina (Scoville) Murphy. At least I think so. It has been quite a while since you left your message so you may have gathered a great deal more information since then. If you are still at this address, contact me at phheld@twcny.rr.com and we can compare notes.

Polly Held
