hi i'm a scowen and a live in newcastle upon tyne, and i'm 20, i asked my grandad and he said and i quote " we've lived up here for ages but i know most scowens live down south"

The Monument to Sir William Scawen and his wife who died at the age of 33 years is in All Saints Parish Church Carshalton. It is a very large monument and dominates the Outer South Aisle.

We have Scowen's who came from Sussex and Essex and moved to Leeds, married Sykes family and then Mogg family. Our earliest so far is a Robert Scowen born 1838 , he was reputed to have been a wherry man, ie sailed an inshore craft called a wherry. he may have had a father called Robert Scowen and possibly his mother was Elizabeth Hunt but as yet we cannot verify. Family lore says the name was of Scots or Northern countries origin so the connection with across the north sea may fit. interested in finding any related Scowens as it has become a christian name for some in our family

Does anyone have any further details concerning a John Frederick Scowen born in Islington, middlesex, england on or about November 1884, cannot find any birth or census records relating to him. His father may also have been called John.

I read your posting with interest, and was wondering if there could be an connection. I'm tracing the Hunter line from Fort St. George, Madras, India. Robert Scawan (Scawen) Hunter was ch. Jun 22, 1799 at Fort George. His parents where William Hunter and Helena Unknown. I know it was often a practice to use the Maiden name of the mother as a middle name. Where any of these names found in your family reseach?

Hi Robert,
I understand that the Scowen name originally arrives out of Skowen island off the Netherlands coast. I have a family crest which incorporates a dolphin or similar fish. This would line up with the fact that the majority of Skowen island people are fishermen.

Hey Myself and my sister have just found this website. We are Scowen's as well!!! Its SOoooooo weird finding out that there are so many of us with the same surname. We Live in the South of England so if anyone wants to chat and explore if we're related in any way please do!!!

I am from a 'Scowen' family in New Zealand. I was told my grandfather had our family crest of Nordic origin- Viking. I think it was spelt Skown, and has changed through the ages. I haven't seen it, but would like to one day. I have read your dialogue on our family name, but have not seen any mention of this origin. I am interested in finding out more on this. Some of you may be able to help?

You might like to reseach your unusual surname with the following information. There was a very good photograper with the surname of Scowen, working in Ceylon, around 1875. Sorry - no more information but it might be useful. Best wishes. Ray.

My maternal grandfather is a Scowen. I have little (no) information past my great grandfather and his sibling. There is a historic "seat" bearing the name Scowen in the UK, my grandfather has mentioned when he went on a trip there.

This is a small drop in the family bucket, but I own a WWI medal, dated 1914-1915 - sometimes referred to as the "Ypres Star" - which is made out to a W.R. Scowen. The full information on the back reads:

The Scowen with which you are speaking is Charles. Famous
photographer in the 1870's, I believe that is who you are talking about. Would love to hear any stories or history in regards to the Scowen Family.

I was interested to read that there may be a historic family seat bearing the name scowen somewhere in the UK. My father now aged 93 seems to recollect that there was a historic family mentioned in the past. Does anyone have any further information. I look forward to hearing from anyone. Sue
