Looking for more information on family of Albert James Scranton born 1845 in Ohio, died 1913 in Millersburg, IL. The newspaper obituary I have lists his father as J. K. Scranton, but a family tree found here has his father as Ralph. Any information you have would be welcome.

You caught my attention. I believe my ancestor may be a brother, Martin Scranton born 1794. My Martin moved his family to Iowa by 1845. Very few out there working this line.
I searched census for your Almon and find him still alive in 1860 in Pope, Illinois. Ancestry has him as SERANTON with wife Rachel, and children Levi and Melina still at home. Every little bit helps. Joan

Hi,

I'm still trying to prove or disprove this family to hook into my line.
Almon(d) SCRANTON b. 1806 approx Canada &
Rachel Pierce b.1804 PA
They were married in Dearborn, IN

I've come back as I see some more Trees being added that pull these two into them. I have seen most people post they die around 1850. How do people know this? A guess or actual info. Everyone I write to doesn't know were the info comes from. Anyone have a clue where they died? IN, OH, IL ???
And since they list them both 1850 do they die at the same time? I tried to find a link for a newspaper for their daughters death but I guess Pope, ILL doesn't have a Newspaper. (In SF, CA you can put together families by the Newspaper data!)

If anyone has a link or info on this family I'd love it as the one girl Elizabeth could ??? be my gggm.

Other names linked to this family are LEVI SCRANTON, MELISSA ANN SCRANTON BOICOURT

OH Most of Hirams decendants live or lived in Defiance Co., OH . I have all the information for them and would be happy to share it with any descendants.

I need information that may be in Family Group Sheets, Bibles, or 5 Generation Charts published in any of thousands of genealogy departments in local libraries in the USA.
MCLAUGHLIN'S in Boston Area

Hi I'm looking for a McLAUGHLIN family that came to the US in 1832-35 time period from Ireland. My gggf was John L. McLAUGHLIN he may have been a Jr. I'm pretty sure his father's name was John also. My gggf was a baby or very young when they came here. I have no idea where they settled but by 1855 my gggf went to Boston for work. They may have lived close by or a near by town I'm not sure. I know my gggf worked in Boston as a Piano forter /tunner until 1859/60. Sometime during these years he mets a girl named Elizabeth or Rachel SCRANTON b. 1840 (IN or ??) Either he mets her in or around Boston or they meet near St. Louis, MO.
They stayed in St. Louis, MO area for a couple years during the Civil War. She at some point became a spy and was caught and was going to be hung!!! She escaped and General Lee's sister or wife's sister?? helped my gggm and her two little girls to a boat across enemy lines. They then traveled down the Mississippi to New Orleans then to Panama and then to CA. I'm not sure her husband John McLaughlin was with her or not.

She then went on to have 6 more children. The children’s names were; Mary Matilda, Emma, Elizabeth, Annie, Robert Emmett, William John, Olive, Esther.
Elizabeth died in 1880 in SF. John died in 1912 in SF, CA. He worked as a builder once in CA.

I know John MCLAUGHLIN had at least three sisters from old family stories, I'm not sure on the brothers.
Relatives either sisters, brothers or uncles lived in San Joaquin Valley during the 1880-1920 and may have been wealthy.

I just found an obit 1880 for John's wife Elizabeth which says (BOSTON PAPERS PLEASE COPY), which leads me to believe there was family in the Boston area during 1880.

Any one researching McLAUGHLIN's that were in Boston, were in Piano making, or went to CA area please write. I'd love to find other parts of this family!!!

These McLaughlin were from Northern Ireland and were Catholic if that helps anyone.

Thanks,
Cathie

There was also two sons, Joseph H (my late father) and his late brother George (who was a child at death). I keep running into dead ends when I search.

My gg grandfather was William Scranton. He was born in Schoharie in late 1830 per his own handwriting on his enlistment papers. Married Jane Coats on Nov. 9, 1853 in Independence, New York. Enlisted in Wisconsin 16 infantry, Co. B in Feb. 1864. Died of typhoid in Brown General Hospital, Louisville, 7/24/1865. I have his military files [NARA & Wisc], pension file, searched the Roll of Honor and everthing I can think of. Cannot verify his parents or locate burial site. I believe his father and mother were Samuel and Catherine, looking for proof.

James, thank you for replying to my post. I at first thought William may be a son of Oliver, but dismissed it when I got his enlistment papers. He enlisted in Feb. 1864 and he stated he was 33 years and 3 months old. That would place his birth as Nov. 1830, after the 1830 census.

I found Samuel [Oliver's brother] on the 1840 census as "Seranton". His family matches the Samuel in Westfield, Pa in 1850. On the 1850 census William is 19, he wouldn't have been 20 until November. He married Jane Coats in Independence, NY on Nov. 9, 1853. [20 miles from Westfield]

Jane and William moved to Springwater, Wi. in 1861. The 16th was known as the Saxeville Rangers although his enlistment was credited to a recruiter from Courtland.

Ken

Was your Harold connected to the Joseph Hand Scranton from Scranton PA.? I have found that Joseph's obit. You said Harold lived in NJ. Who was his father? And where did your Joseph live? What did the H. stand for? If I have this info I will watch for them when I search for Scranton's

I have also found Lyman's father and mother. Please e-mail me directly scranton@defnet.com and I will send what I have found to any one who wants it.

I also have been getting nowhere searching for Nicholas Scranton born <1795> and married to Sophia Moore on 13 Sept 1812 in Chester, MA. Sophia was the daughter of Hiram Moore and Deborah Phelps. Records say Nicholas was born in MA, but I can not find any record for that. I went to MA in Oct 2007 and searched records in Hampden and Hampshire County. I am thinking he may have used another first name? I want to know who his father and mother were.

Nicholas was in the Ludlow MA 1820 census so I hoped to get some clues on the family at the Ludlow Town Hall--nothing!

Even though Scranton's were in the Ludlow census from 1790 to 1820 the Ludlow Town Hall Records did not have ANY Scranton birth, marriage, or death records. They let me see the books so I know there are none recorded in Ludlow!

The Scranton's were Baptist's when they lived in Ludlow. Does anyone know where to look for Baptist birth, marriage and death records for Hampden and Hampshire Counties from 1775 to 1820? I am thinking maybe they were recorded in the church records and that is why I do not find them in the Town Hall Records.

I did find a Samuel Scranton living in Belchertown in 1800 his wife was Abigail Culver. I found list of their children with birthdates at the Stone House Museum and Historical Society. I have more information about him and will send it to anyone who wants to see it.

If a Barbara Shaw reads this I hope you will contact me again. I accidentally deleted your e-mail so could not reply. I have Loomis, Moore, and Herrick info to share with you!

Looking forward to working with anyone on the Scranton brick walls! FYI our Scranton’s moved from Ludlow MA to Portage Co. Franklin Twp. Ohio about <1822>, then to DeKalb County IN about <1845>

Mary

Have you searched the Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files 1861-1934? I found a William Scranton wife named Jane in the Index. I did not look at the records because I do not have enough information about William and Jane and would be wasting my time to continue to look! Do you know their middle names or initial, childrens names, brothers or sisters of William, where married, where buried., where did Jane live after William died?

I am assuming you searched www.familysearch.com ? I found William and Jane there the only additional bit of information was that a child Jennie was born in 1858.

I found a William age 32 living in the household of Amos Scranton, age 70, occupation farmer in the Washington County, Town of Greenwich P.O. Bald Mountian, New York 1860 Census. But I did not think that would be your William because he would have been married at that date and no wife or child were listed. A possibility that the child died in infancy or his wife and child were residing elsewhere since he was Civil War bound??? Others in the household were wife Lucinda,Charles Bently and Lucy Bently. The next household was Lewis Scranton age 35. Wealthy wife, Edward and Sarah Green, Henry,Catherine Helen Scranton.

There was a Oliver Scranton, age 57, occupation Blacksmith in the 1870 Schoharie Co. Census with a William age 10; too young and the Civil war was over when he was age 5!

Have you searched:
www.ancestry.com; do you subscribe to this website?
American Genealogical and Biographical index;
New York Census Index 1790-1870;
New York County Probate records for Amos and Oliver's probated wills;
Early biographies in Schoharie county and surrounding counties;
Schoharie County Obits for any Oliver, Amos, or William Scranton

If you do not know how to get to any of the above let me know and I will help you.

I think your best bet is the Civil War Pension Index-- the applications had a lot of information required and all of that is available. In the google search bar type:
Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files 1861-1934

My next bet would be probate records--but you usually cannot do that on line. some counties have an index on their genealogical chapter web site. I can hook you up to a free search for all counties in the USA is you want the information.

I have a Nicholas Scranton that I cannot find the names of his parents! I also have a Hiram Sylvester Scranton that was trickey to trace because he went by many forms of his name, or initials were used and Hiram was mispelled in so may census. I finnaly got him "found". For Nicholas I have decided I need to go to the Ft. Wayne library and search the books because I have exhausted the online resources! ie I can understand your situation!!

Let me know more details using my e-mail below. William married Jane Coates and died of wounds or illness from the civil war. Do you have more info on the Amos or Oliver Scranton families? Any on-line leads I can search?
Amos & Charles Meylert

Charles Meylert was the brother in law of Joseps Scranton. Amos was Charles's father.
On March 12 1881 Charles's body was moved and burried in Scranton with his father Amos who died in 1873. Amos was in Banking and a Gereral in the PA Militia.
My question--does anybody know what Cemetery they were buried in?

Re: Scranton/Schoharie/Tioga

there weren't many scranton families in schoharie in 1830, as i'm sure you know. i descend from oliver scranton, who shows up in schoharie in 1810, '20, and '30. according to the census, by 1830 he had a son born between 1825 and 1830. oliver disappears by the 1840 enumeration, so we don't know if he had any more children than show up in the '30 count. he was 45 yrs old in '30, so it's possible that he did.
in any event, i wonder if your william is the unnamed male child referred to in oliver's family born bet. '25 & '30. how certain are you of your grt-grt-grandfather's birth date?
my theory is that oliver and his family moved to far western new york by 1840; his daughter, my grt-grandmother, married my grt-grandfather in buffalo in 1844. i cannot prove that family move, but i'm guessing at it.
independence is not that far away from erie county (buffalo). might william, as a member of oliver's family, have moved to western n.y. with them, where he met and married his wife?
also interesting that your william ends up in wisconsin at the time of the civil war. more potential circumstantial connections to my group. where was the 16th wisconsin infantry formed? what county?
just some thoughts after coming across your post.
cheers,
j.

Re: Amos Scranton

the amos scranton you refer to is probably the brother of oliver scranton, b. 3/1/1785, in belchertown, mass. these two were among nine children of samuel scranton and abigail culvor. birthdates for all the children except amos are known for certain. conjectural date for amos's birth was circa 1794, so the 70-yr-old age at the the 1860 census time is in the ballpark.

the oliver you refer to is likely the son of oliver and betsy scranton who shows up on the earlier censuses as "male, born 1810-1815". their daughter, called either "betsy alzina scranton"(per her obit and my dad's memory) or just plain "alzina"(as stated in various later censuses), is the only child i've known the name of in that family.
oliver the elder is my 2nd-grt-grandfather, betsy alzina is my grandmother. i have not turned up definite names for the other children of their family, but i'm betting that oliver the blacksmith is one. there weren't many non-family scrantons in schoharie at that time.

now, a confusing point.....
a similar younger oliver shows up in great bend twp, susquehanna co, pennsylvania, in 1860, age 47 (indicating similar birth year), occupation blacksmith, born in new york. wife elisabeth and two daughters enumerated in the household. by 1870 (yes, he's still counted there in 1870) he has a 10-yr-old son named william h. scranton, and two more daughters.
same oliver? probably. counted twice in two places? maybe.
hmmmm....
another source lists an oliver scranton, presumably the same guy, buried in rose hill cemetery, great bend township. death year is 1885. stone apparently says he served in company f, 15th new york volunteers. age at death given as 74, still in the correct age ballpark, but probably a simple error on the part of whoever ordered the stone. age 47 in 1860, add 25 years to the death date, and it comes out age 72 at death, subtracted from 1885 takes us right back to 1813 and the probability that he was the same guy from schoharie county, ny. and, twists and turns notwithstanding, likely the son of oliver the elder. circumstantial evidence for the relationship, to be sure, but it makes a rational theory.

incidently, the elder oliver appears in schoharie county in 1810, 1820, & 1830 censuses, then basically disappears. i've seen deeds, mortgages, and land sale transactions showing where they lived during that time, but after 1830, they're gone.

anyhow, my two cents worth.

jim

i see in your database that you have oliver scranton born in schoharie, ny, 3/1/1785. are you quite sure of that birthplace? doug cruger has oliver born in belchertown, mass., on that date. his siblings born there, too, according to doug's research.

Steph,
I don't know how I overlooked checking out the Scranton board before this, but I'm glad to have found you! I am researching the same family, with a focus on Arthur Leroy Scranton. My great-grandmother ties into this family somehow, and I'm struggling to find the connection. I would love to share research with you. Have you tied them into the King Campbell family yet through Rebecca? I'm seeing that your posts are a couple years old by now and figure a lot has happened since your post.
~Kelly

Wow,

I think I missed this post. I just happened to return to a search on Lyman and found you.

I have tied the Scrantons to the Campbell family.

George M. Scranton son of Samuel Scranton married Rebecca Campbell, daughter of King Jerome Campbell.

Please contact me at tiberious@rocketmail.com and we can compare information on the scranton and campbell trees.
