SCROGGIN-RICE VA>GA>TA>IL

Seeking information on the Rice and Scroggin/s families: Jackson County Georgia 1799 Tax List:

Benjamin and David Rice and Chatham(Chattin Doggett) Scroggin (son of Humphrey Scroggin Sr. of VA). Chattin Doggett Scroggin remains in Jackson County Georgia where he dies in 1862.

Another Benjamin Rice, born in Georgia ca 1796, marries Margaret Scroggin, daughter of Humphrey Scroggin Jr. approximately 1812 in Tennessee. Benjamin buys property in Gallatin County Illinois in April of 1819.

Is this Benjamin the son of either Benjamin or David Rice located in Jackson County Georgia in 1799?

Also, Ransom Scroggin Rice is born in Georgia in approximately 1800. I believe Benjamin and Ransom Scroggin are brothers. Who was Ransom Scroggin Rice named for?

Was there an earlier marriage between the Rice and Scroggin families or was the name granted because of close personal relationships between the two families? He is the only Rice in the 1830 Franklin County Tennessee Census.

Humphrey Scroggin, Jr is in Franklin County Tennessee in 1812 and Gallatin County Illinois in 1818.

Humphrey Scroggin, Sr. dies in Clarke County Georgia in 1821.

Young Benjamin Rice and Humphrey Scroggins, Jr. have property very close to eachother in 1819 in Gallatin County Illinois.

Discount certificates available on DNA study!

I have just been informed by the folks at Family Tree DNA that they will provide some discount certificates to a few people who might consider joining the study before the end of the year. I can cut the cost by 50% or so as I understand it (I will look deeper as to the details when I get some inquiries). Unfortunatly it will not apply to those interesed in 'upgrading'. Please drop me a line if you know of a direct male decendant that might be willing.
Patrick
jscoggin@nmsu.edu

SCROGGIN surname DNA study is registered and discount pricing is available

Good morning,
It seems I have become the admistrator at our surname project at Family Tree DNA and I can send out invitations from our webpage to anyone who might want to join. It will take me a while to get the whole project set up but we are up an running.
http://www.familytreedna.com/
The advantage is that we now qualify for a savings of about 1/3ed. There are several tests but the ones we are most interested in are the 'y' chromosome tests that range from about $100 to $212. I am ordering the larger "37 marker" test. I feel an obligation as an instigator in this to 'bite the bullet'. The website at FTDNA can fill you in on the details.
What we are looking for is males from various lines to submit tests so that we can tie things together. It would not do much good for two cousins that KNEW they were related to submit as that would be a duplication.
There is a good chance that we will be able to tie into George Scoggin who immigrated in the 1650s from England or one of the other early immigrants. We are also going to try to get lines from England and Scandinavia to join in as it seems likely that somewhere way back there that's where we came from.
Let me know if there is anyone I should send the invitation to.
Thanks again
Patrick Scoggin
Scroggin DNA study underway. Participants wanted.

DNA genealogy is proven and pretty fantastic. The privacy issues are well addressed and will in no way be a concern for participants. AND there is a price (1/3 savings) break if we do it as a Family Name Project starting with at least 6 participants.
I have contacted a representative at Family Tree DNA to start the project. There may actually already be one tested person. If so that means we just need four more with me as the fifth.
Because in my own tree I have relatives with variant spellings I am suggesting we include in the study the following: Scoggin/Scoggins/Scroggin/Scroggins. Should there be others?
The cost vary from 229$ for the 37 marker test, about 150$ for the 25 marker test and about 100$ for the 12 marker test. (These are the discount pricings for members of a group as I understand it.) Obviously the more markers the more specific the information. I am going to start things off with the 37 marker test but am not sure others need to do the same.
If you are curious about how these things work I have found a few family DNA sites on line that people have set up that I think are exemplary and a model for what I hope to do. For a look visit:
http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/results.html
or try http://www.davenportdna.com/results.htm
Look around the sites as they have pretty good explanations of various issues on other pages.
For general info at the test site visit:
http://www.familytreedna.com/
I chose Family Tree DNA mostly because it seems to be the most frequently used thus most likely to find matches. I am not sure what it would take to compare results from other labs to those from this one but I do think that is doable.
I look forward to hearing from anyone that might have an interest in this project.
Patrick Scoggin
jscoggin@nmsu.edu
Hi,

Mary Scroggin was my grandmother. I am the son of Charles Tucker. My sister is Ruth Skaggs of Harlingen. I live in Houston. I do not know much about Mary Scroggin. I think that I know where she is buried. I was born a few months after Mr. Tucker died. He was living with my parents. I knew a few of my father's sisters. My sister is older than I am. She knew my grandfather. She may have more information on my father's sisters.
Hi,
I am trying to find information about Sam Smith and Belle Scroggin Smith.
My name is Linda Smith Kunze. My ex-father-in-law was Sam Smith. The afore mentioned Sam Smith and Belle were his parents. My father-in-law did not know his mom or dad. His mom died giving birth and his dad gave him to C. T. Tucker to raise. I know that this is the same family because my Sam (who is deceased) has a list of all of the people listed in your query. I'm trying to put together a family tree for my ex-husband and our daughters and would appreciate any information I can find. Please email me if you know anything. We know nothing about Sam and Belle except that Mary Elizabeth and Belle were sisters and full blooded Irish.
thanks,
Linda

Don't limit yourself to just the Scroggin spelling. My great grandmother was a Scoggin but I have found them on census as Scoggin, Scoggins and Scroggin. My Scoggin family was found in Va., N.C. and then MS. The first one found was John William Scoggin. His son was William Andros Scoggin and then William Harvey Scoggin. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I'm trying to find out information about my great grandmother Mary Belle Scroggin. I'm wondering if she could be the daughter of either Mary Elizabeth Scroggin or Belle Scroggin. My great grandmother appears to have been born in 1904 and died in 1938. Could Mary Elizabeth Scroggin died giving birth to my great grandmother in 1904?

My grandmather George Allen Conway put on his marriage application in 1943 or 1944 in Vigo County, Indiana that his mother's name was Mary Belle Scroggin and that she was born in Oklahoma and that she was deceased. I found and ordered an obituary from Vigo County (Tribune) for a Mary Belle Conway who died in 1938 and was 34 at the time of her death.
