My home county is Tallapoosa County and there are several of us who have tried to figure out Phillip and Manly's kin. I spent five hours in the Georgia archives last week but couldn't find anything to deny what I now believe. I am just going to accept this and go on.

I did not know anything about Philip and Manly being cousins nor did I know about either moving to Texas. My great grandmother was Sarah Frances (called Fannie) Scroggins. She is buried in the City Cemetery in Gilmer, Upshur Co, Texas. I live in Texas and would be happy to locate Manly's grave. Does anyone know the county where he moved to? Manly had son, J Bluford, whp lived in Mt Vernon, Franklin Co, Tx. Another son. Thomas, married Floretta Doak in Red River Co. Franklin Co was formed from Red River Co abt 1875.

Delwin Moore
delwin1924@sbcglobal.net

Ok, thanks. y0our information tallies somewhat with what we had been told. My grandmother, Lilly McLeran, was Fannie Scroggins McLean's gaughter. Grandmother Lillie died when my father was only 9 years old. but he thought his mother lived near Detroit (Texas). I live a few counties away from there, but I'l check the Census records. The Scroggins and McLeans were sawmillers and moved all around northeast Texas. Were Manly and Phillip first cousins?

Delwin

Well, it sounds TO me as though you are correct in your research. When you have eliminated all possible scenarios, that which remains is the truth.

Thanks for sharing. If you need any information om Manly's descendants I will do what I can to help. I've often thought that "Manly" was a family name. If so, it probably, came from his mother's family. You have my email address if you need any information I have.

Delwin
delwin1924@sbcglobal.net

No, the book doesn't have Benjamin Asberry "Berry" Scroggins in it. I do have him in my file, tho- found him in the 1830 Roane Co TN census, & either his or her mother
(b. ca 1750-60)was living with them at the time, as well as about 9 children, mostly males.

I believe (very little proof) that Talitha was the widow of Lemuel Scroggin, and Pleasant was his brother. After Lemuel died in Gallatin Co, Talitha sold the property to her brother-in-law. Both Lemuel & Pleasant were sons of Humphrey Scroggin & his wife Sarah Kerby (Kirby).

I think Asa is the one who is on the 1860 Independence Co AR census. My records show two wives: Malinda Mays, whom he m. 3 Nov 1829 Fayette Co IL; and Sarah A. (Baer) Tadlock, widow of Michael Tadlock. Asa may have died in the Civil War, as he enlisted, I've been told, in Co.M, 5th Ark. Infantry. His widow, Sarah, is on the 1870 & 1880 censuses in Gallatin Co IL. These are the children I have:
Lorenzo Dow b. ca 1830; William Asa b. ca 1836; Lucinda b. ca 1839; Lavina L. b. ca 1841; Mary Ann b. ca 1843; John b. ca 1847; Malissa H. b. ca 1854; Henry C. b. ca 1856; Samuel M.R. b. 1860 AR; Mary F. b. ca 1864; ?Lovella? b. ca 1867
This is not my family. But some of this info came from "Memoirs of the Lower Ohio Valley" p. 357 & 358.
