Go to Castlebar, County Mayo and check out the marriages there for Walsh is as common there as Jackson is here. Also check out towns of Hanley or Walsall, Staffordshire County, England for both families moved there after the famine. There is a Thomas Scully or Sculley on the census in Walsall, England. My earliest Sculley is Michael Sculley, married to a Judith, also from Castlebar. They were later found in the town of Hanley and later Walsall. I believe Thomas was a relative to Mike.

Hi,
I'm new to all of this but I've just received a family tree that was done by my aunt back in the early 70's. I believe we are related. My grandfather was Charles Blanquart. His father was also named Charles Blanquart who married Clemonce Dieu in Collinsville, IA. My family tree says that Charles Sr. died in the San Fransisco earthquake of 1906. If you'd like to compare notes you can email me.

Hi! I don't know how I missed your posting. I have many questions about Ferdinand Scully and his sister, Annie. I can supply you with info about the children of William Scully by his second wife, Sabina, particularly about the descendants of William's son, William Scully. I knew both him and his wife, Sarah Black Scully. They lived for a long time on Hermitage Street. I married into that branch of the Scully family. Donna

If you don't find him in Chicago, most are there, check Springfield (Sangamon County, IL) or Cairo (Alexander County, IL). In the area on the east side of St. Louis, MO there were many Scullys and Sculleys and they were all related. This is my family. There were a few Johns but most of them died early or moved away.

County Mayo Scully and Sculleys, from Ireland to Staffordshire County, England to southern Illinois.

I have been going through the census of Staffordshire County, England and there are many Scullys, Sculleys and some Welsh families that lived there after the famine. Some migrated to the Illinois side of St. Louis, MO and found work in the coal mines. Some of them were William (wife Catherine), Martin (wife Mary), John (wife Anne), Michael (wife ?Ellen Ryan), James (single), Thomas (wife Christina), Patrick (wife ?) and a sister, Rose. Some of the family stayed in England and they are - Mary married a Welsh and Anne married a McGarry. If any of these names are familiar, I would love to hear from you.

William Scully, b. 1863, Pennsylvania
Residence 1900- Philadelphia City, Phildelphia, PA
married to Sabina Scully with children:
Ferdinand Scully
William Scully
Annie Scully
Mary Jane Scully
Sarah Scully

1900 Census attachecd w/web address http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?...

This may be the same William Scully researched by Homer E. Scolofsky in the book, "William Scully: Ireland and America, 1840-1900.

This can be accessible through interlibrary load or access JSTOR at http://www.jstor.org/pss/3741426 A copy of the book cover is attached.

The difference with this William Scully is his shift from Catholic to Anglican Church, whereby in Ireland he gained access to lands, and as a landowner, didn't gain too much favor with the locals, thus moving to England and on to the U.S. Remember, the difference in choice of Church is significant.

A review of Sabrina show other entries of the same given name reflecting a death in Galway, Ireland, however, I think the dates are more consistent with a either a child of theirs with the same given name or simply, another person named Sabrina. Sabina, Sebina and Sibina are similar names in the Family Search database.

Thank you so much for the information. I have little to nothing when it comes to Robert Scully. About the only thing is that his parents were named John and Elizabeth Scully. Most of my time has been concentrated trying to determine a family link (not on the Scully side) to the Conard line in Loudoun County, but I will keep this in my files until I start working on the Scully side.
It is so true about being "hooked" on genealogy research. I started about 2 1/2 years ago and now work on it almost every day.
Best of luck with your research.
Joan

He was the son of William Scully, born 1863, and his second wife, Sabina, maiden name unknown. The date of the death of Wiliam's first wife is not known, except that it was before 1893. He had 2 known children by his first wife, Ferdinand and Annie. By his second wife, Sabina, he had 10 children, the oldest being also named William Scully. He lived to be vrery old, and I knew him and his wife, Sarah Black Scully. They lived on Hermitage Strret. I have a tree on genesreunited.com and am gradually building up my records.

My great grandmother was Mary Scully (1876-1938)
She was the daughter of Cornelius Scully (c1853) and Emily Barrett (1854-1904, some people have her as Emily Barratt).
Cornelius Scully was the son of George Scully (c1825) and a Mary (unknown).
Cornelius had siblings: Michael c1846, John c1849, Martin C1861

Cornelius was known as Henry. He was known as a fancy soap maker. The family lived at 12 Thorold Street, Bethnal Green in 1881.

Marilyn,

I got carried away and gave you some incorrect information. Here is the correction....

We know so little about the Blanquarts. I am very very appreciative.

My great great grandfather was Charles Blanquart. My great grandfather was Adolph V. Blanquart born 12/27/1877, died 4/27/1955. Adolph moved to Michigan and was married in Bay City to Kathleen Gulberg. My grandmother, Helen May Blanquart was born to them 5/10/1910. She had three siblings: Gilbert, Adolph Hadley and Bettylou Karolyn Blanquart. Gilbert passed in 2004, Adolph passed in 2006. Betty passed in 2008.

My mother was born to William Bigford and Helen Blanquart 4/2/1931. I was born in 1952 so I don't remember my great grandfather Adolph. It's been said that he was thrilled when I was born. His wife Kathleen lived to be over 90 so, I got a chance to know her well. Kathleen passed in 1977.

According to our family information....ADOLPH (in my earlier email I said Charles) Blanquart had 3 brothers: Albert in Peoria; Henry in Des Moines and Charles in Eagle River, Wisc. There was also a sister, Amelia, who I think lived in Colorado. I know that Adolph V. lived with her for a while... I don't have any idea who the other two siblings of Adolph were, you mentioned 6 children of Charles and Clemence.

Also according to family scribblings, Amelia had two children, Charles Harper and Mary Wilfred. I know nothing else about them...and have begun to question whether that is correct.

Again, thank you for your quick response to my inquiry. I appreciate it. And the offer is good for the photo of Charles.

All the best,
John Sheffler, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

Hello Marilyn,
I feel as though I've stumbled on something HUGE here. I just started looking into all this and am thrilled that you wrote back.

My great great grandfather was Charles Blanquart. My great grandfather was Adolph V. Blanquart born 12/27/1877, died 4/27/1955. Adolph moved to Michigan and was married in Bay City to Kathleen Gulberg. My grandmother, Helen May was born to them 5/10/1910. She had three siblings: Gilbert, Adolph Hadley and Bettylou Karolyn Blanquart. Gilbert passed in 2004, Adolph passed in 2006. Betty passed in 2008.

That's a portion of what I have at this point. It has been a real struggle to find anything. All I knew before I started this was that Charles Blanquart had 3 brothers: Albert in Peoria; Henry in Des Moines and Charles in Eagle River, Wisc. There was also a sister, Amelia. I know that Adolph V. lived with her for a while...

I do have a photo of Charles. I'd be happy to copy it and send it to you electronically if you'd like.

I look forward to hearing back from you.
John -- Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

Re: Robert and Catherine Scully of Richmond Va

I am also interested in Robert Scully because I think he could possibly be a brother to my ggg-grandfather William C. Scully. Sources vary about William. Some say he was born Sept. 7, 1797 in Virginia. Other sources give the same date but say Greene County, TN was his birthplace. I tend to think Virginia is more reasonable since there were no Scullys listed in Greene County, TN until William was married in 1824. I say all that to say--My daughter-in-law and I have found a John G. Scully on the 1790 Personal Tax Index for James County, VA. He appears again in 1801 on Personal A Tax rolls of Henrico Conty, VA. He also appears in 1802 on Land B Tax rolls in Henrico Co. We not not find John G. anymore, but Elizabeth Scully appears in the census of Henrico Co. in both 1810 and 1820. In the 1810 census, she has sons listed in the male age category that would fit William. In the 1820 census, there is a Robert Scully who is most likely her son. It is unusual for a woman to be listed as the head of a household during this time period, so it stands to reason that this Elizabeth could be John G.'s widow given the location.
I am fairly new at research (though I am thoroughly "hooked"), but maybe this info will be helpful.

I am looking for brother/sister Edith and Ransom Scully, both born in East Tennessee in 1903 and 1905 (approx). They were last known to me to be in McDowell Co., WV. in 1925-1930. Edith had connections with Toledo, Ohio having married/lived with a Garnie Ray Jackson from there. Records in McDowell Co. say Edith married Peter Greeney of Greece, but I cannot find him after the date of the marriage either. Help!!

Does anyone have any information on a William & Maria(Gealey) Scully. These are my gg Granmothers parents and her name was Margaret and I know she had a sister by the name of bridget. On the marriage certificate her birthplace was drumgriffin galway county. Bridget and Margaret must have come out to Australia in the 1890's roughly and went to Croydon in Queensland. I think also William and Maria may have had a son or two by the names of Tom and William (althought not 100% sure.
Any infor would be great.

My great grandfather, Michael Scully, was born in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo in July 1861. His mother Mary Cuff(?) died in childbirth- I think 1864, and Michael was brought to England by an uncle when Michael's father (Patrick)remarried and started a new family. Michael was around 10 at that time.
The church and tithe records show the surname as Scally.
I wonder if we are connected?

i am interested in finding out information about my great grandmother named Mary Scully she was born around 1880. She lived with her husband Charles Smith in the Dominican Republic. I believe they were missionaries that were killed in an motor vehicle/wagon accident circa 1910. The children Harold Smith and Charles Smith were sent to live with an aunt in Jamaica, West Indies. I believe she was of Irish descent. There was some mention about her brother being a bishop

Hi John, Charles Blanquart, born 1853, was my husband's great-grandfather!
Clemence Dieu died in What Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa; they had six children. Charles married Alice Cromben, a widow with four children, in 1888. They had three children together. My husband's grandmother was Mary Blanquart, daughter of Charles and Alice. We are related to all the children, either as half-siblings or full siblings. I am trying to trace them all and have found a lot of information in the last two years.
Charles died in 1905 in a mining accident in White City which was a mining town in Mahaska County that was only in existence for a few years. He was brought back to What Cheer for burial.
How do you fit into the family?
Write to me or phone me. Welcome to the family; I can put you in touch with several new "cousins".

Marilyn in Athens, Wisconsin

Researching the Scully family, but can't get past John Scully, probably born in Buffalo, New York, orphaned, and somehow ended up in Greene Co., Pennsylvania. Married Susan Isabel McCarl about 1880. His birth dates vary from 1860 to 1865, depending on where I look. Family legend is that his father (name unknown) was captain of a ship that took him and his wife (name also unknown) to the bottom of Lake Erie. There may have been older siblings, but their names are also unknown, as is their fate.

I'm hoping that some of this connects somehow to your tree, and would appreciate anything you may have on the Scully family.

John and Belle's children were Earl, Elsa (married Hubert Benson), Ken, Carl(Samuel McCarl)(married Mabel Bourassa), Nell (married Don Ames), Velma(married Gilbert Orr).

Hi,

Collinsville, Troy, Belleville and Millstadt were coal mining areas up to the 1920's and 1930's. I have found that the miners who worked together moved together to various places. I know that my family moved to What Cheer, Iowa another mining area for a time, but came back to the Collinsville, East St. Louis area. I sometimes research for others and recently found several Jeromes in Centreville/Centerville and Alta Sita (near where the Aluminum Ore Co.was)years ago. You might check the census for the Jeromes there. What Cheer had many Irishmen there at that time.

There is a Michael Scully in our background and he was found in Ennis or Ennismon, County Clare, with his family and younger brother, James, before he came to the U.S. I don't know if he was in England first, but I have to assume that he was since some of his family settled in Hanley, Staffordshire County, England before they moved to the U.S. Michael landed up with quite a large clan here in the U.S. and I have met most of them. We are distantly related. I have a feeling their parents were from County Mayo, but I don't have any proof. Since they were all Catholic and the Catholics were persecuted in Ireland at that time, I doubt there are many records and the Irish charge quite a bit for a research, which is beyond my means. The Michael Scully here lived in St. Clair County, IL.

Marilyn,

I am first seeing the message that you left. I have seen your families while researching in Collinsville. The Jeromes, I believe, were first in Cahokia or Centreville, IL, which is near East St. Louis, IL across the river from St. Louis, MO. I recently did a French tree for a friend and came across several Jeromes in the places above. Good luck on your hunting.

Mary Ann

Marilyn,

Since both of your names are French, I would highly suggest checking Cahokia and Centreville for both sides. Those areas in the 1800's to the early 1900's were loaded with French. I was raised in E. St. L. until I was seven and then raised in Belleville so I remember many of the names, plus I have seen them on the census. I lived in E. St. L. from 1946 to 1953 and lived near St. Elizabeth Church. I went to hifh school at Notre Dame in Belleville so a lot of the East St. Louis girls went there too. Good Luck!

What I have found about some of the Scullys is that they worked the coal mines in England, after the famine in Ireland, and then some went to Pennsylvania and worked the mines there. This is a repeat, but many then came to St. Clair and Madison Counties, in Illinois, to work the coalmines there. In Collinsville, Madison Co., there is a coalmine museum and they may have information there on the miners. Watch Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa was also a coal mining area and many of the Collinsville families moved there to work, but most came back to Illinois. Good luck in your hunting.

Regarding Jeromes, I came across them in Centreville, St. Clair County, IL this past couple of weeks researching the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church records, via Ancestry. I would also check Holy Family's records in Cahokia, but they are in French.
