Hello Cousin John, I thoroughly enjoyed your transparency about black/white issue. My name is Keith Scurlark. I am a black man residing in North Carolina; however I was born in raise in Dallas Texas. My dad (Eural Scurlark) was born in West, Texas and his father Herman Scurlock or Grand Father William Scurlock was born in Sabine.

Some black relatives spell their name Scurlock, however most spell their names Scurlark. A few months ago my daughter and I learned that Scurlock was the correct spelling while talking with older family members and working on our family tree project.

Here’s the black Scurlock (Scurlark) ancestral trace that I have. There are many William Scurlock’s and this makes the connections a bit difficult.

William Scurlock (1824) and Dillard Scurlock (1862) both appear to be related as 3rd generational grandfathers to my 2nd generation grandfather William H Scurlock. I know this is not correct, but after hours (days) of searching records, I cannot make a direct connection as this time

Great, Great, Great grandfather – 85% accurate

William Scurlock born 1824 in Tennessee
Isabella Scurlock born 1843 in Tennessee
William H. Scurlock – child born 1884

Great, Great grandfather

Dillard Scurlark born 1862 in Tennessee (Race listed) as Mulatto – 90 percent accurate
Mary Scurlock 41 - child
David Scurlock 28 - child
Henry Scurlock 26 - child
Eugene Scurlock 19 - child
Dillard Scurlock 17 - child
Jane Scurlock 14 -child

Great grandfather - 100 percent accurate

Willie H. Scurlock, born 1884, born Texas, also spelled his name Scurlark
Esley Scurlock born 1878 born Texas

Ora Scurlock - child
Levern Scurlock - child
John C Scurlock - child
Willie M Scurlock - child
Carrie B Scurlock - child
Herman Scurlock - child

Grandfather – 100 percent accurate
Herman Scurlock, also spelled his name Scurlark – Grandfather. born in Houston, 1915, Died in Midland Texas, 1991
Rosie Scurlark – Grandmother
Eural Scurlark child
Lizzie Mae Scurlark –child
Wilma Scurlark –child

Dad -100 percent accurate
Eural Scurlark – Born in Lovelady, Texas
-
I look forward with talking to you soon.

God Bless,
Keith Scurlark

I am not a subscriber to ancestry right now, so I can not click on the photo. I was hoping who ever posted it would send it to me.

I don't believe I found anything new since talking to you other than Robert Scurlock's obit (son of Oscar and Rose)...go onto find a grave. It is under Bobby not Robert. There is also a photo.

Melinda

Does anyone have any information on the black Texas Scurlocks? My family keeps telling me that we have a "Scullock" in the family lineage, but I could not find that surname, and came upon this one. We are originally from Sabine County, TX, but no one took the surname in my family- story is that Grandafther "Scullock" married a black women (who would have been something like my gg or ggg grandmother). He was run out of town by the rest of the white residents and took all of the children with him that looked white, leaving the children that could not "pass" with their mother. The story ends there- I know this sounds horrible but it is the absolute truth (it was the times)- anyone have any information or have heard this story please help! We also have a picture of the husband and wife which has been passed through the family, which may give you an idea of the timeline (it is not a daguerreotype photo from what I can tell).

We start our Scurlock line with Nancy Ann Scurlock b: Abt 1764 in Pittsboro,Chatham Co.,N.C. She married Matthew Ramsey 11/19/1780 in Chatham Co.,N.C. Her parents were Thomas Scurlock and Ann Linkhorne(not her maiden name but I do not know it yet). His father was Mial Scurlock who married Sarah Howard. His father was Michael Scurlock b: 1675 in VA. and d: 14 Nar 1757. So far that is as far back as I have gotten. But, if you live in Texas, there is a great photo of William Scurlock in the museum at Presidio La Bahia, located in Goliad,Tx. He is buried along with 340 troops under Colonel James Walker Fannin who were captured at the Battle of Coleta Creek, under orders of the Mexican dictator,General Santa Anna. The museum director will mail you a copy of that photo for a small donation and postage. Their mailing address is Presidio La Bahia,P.O. Box 57,Goliad,Texas 77963,phone # (361) 645-3752.

The men and Fannin were taken outside and about a block behind the the Presidio and all killed and buried in a huge trough dug by the Mexicans. Today there is a monument to commemorate our loss.

I am new to this and looking through my mothers work on the family. I know lots about the family and where they are buried because my grandmother Mary Etta Poore daughter of Johnathan is my grandmother. She has taken me to cemetaries in both counties and Union county. I talked yesterday to relatives Poores in Clinton, Tn and in Andersonville Tn. My grandmothers brother Edward Poore are all alive except one daughter vdarhur@msn.com

I found an interesting marriage of James and Lidy Scurlock in NC Oct 30 1783. I'm pretty certain that James is the father of Joshua b 20 May 1790 Stokes Co NC d 15 Apr 1854 who was married to Martha Witt Long 29 Jul 1819 and who is the father of Hugh Alexander Scurlock b 9/11/1822 Jackson Co Oh and died 7/2/1895 Fort Levenworth KS in a Soldiers hom. who is the father of George WH 1855, Simon Armstead 1857, Emma 7/22/1865 and Joshua I 4/22/1868 who married Mary Elizabeth 9 Jun 1895(Lizzie) Bradford b 11 Jun 1878...Joshua amd Mary Elizabeth had a number of kids, Toleto, Ovid, Ulvin, Clifford...there are more. My Friend was born Mary Elizabeth Scurlock and her father was Ulvin....Anyway, I haven't yet found the tie in between Hugh Alexander Scurlock and Joseph Scurlock Senior...found quite a few different sites that name Joseph as his father, but with no specifics....the dates seem to logically match and locations and I just need to find the tie in. Maybe there's some help out there. The other thing I am curious about is that my friend said that his mother or grandmother was full blooded American Indian...Mary Elizabeth Bradford Scurlock or Adeline McCray who married Hugh Alexander Scurlock....but I haven't been able to find anything on that and thought that maybe it's on the Scurlock side....

JOSIAH G. "DOC" SCURLOCK, born January 11, 1850, died July 25, 1929. Rode with BILLY THE KID during the Lincoln County Wars in New Mexico. Josiah was born in Alabama and studied medicine, earning him the nickname "Doc". He later moved to New Mexico and hired on as a cow hand with an English nobleman cattle rancher named John Tunstall. Another of the more famous cow hands was Mr. William H. Bonney, better known as "Billy the Kid". Mr. Tunstall was murdered and thus started the Lincoln County War of New Mexico. After the end of the Lincoln County War, all involved were given a pardon by the governor, except for "the Kid". "Doc" gave away his guns, except for a squirrel gun, sold a gold mine for $500.00 (later sold for $75,000.00) and moved his family to Tuscola in the Texas panhandle. Later, he and family moved to Eastland, Texas where "Doc" lived until his death in 1929. "Doc" didn't speak much of his "outlaw" days due to the many who still wanted him dead. He worked for the highway department in Eastland and wrote book reports and book reviews for students at the University of Texas. found on http://www.eastland.net/city/cemetery/cemetery.htm
