Hi Barbara, My great grandfather was Michael Seabrook. His son, my grandfather, Herbert John Seabrook was born on the 19th May 1877 in Hatfield, England. He married Susie May Yarrow on the 15 February 1906 in St. Stephens Church, Paddington, London. He died on the 4 September 1950 in Base Hospital, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. He lived at this time at 1334 Gregory Street, Ballarat. He had 6 children, Winifred Ethel, Geoffrey John, Norman, Ronald Herbert (my father) Kathleen Mabel and Grace Elizabeth.

A John Seabrook has an article on the Early Families of Wheathampstead site, but I am not sure if this connects with my family. Just google, early families of wheathampstead and you will see the listing under Seabrook.

Regards, Jennifer

I've just noticed your message posted a year ago. Michael Seabrook was the younger brother of George Seabrook, my great great grandfather, parents George and Mary Seabrook. Their children were: George b.1826; Ann b. 1828; John b.1832; Thomas b.1835; Michael b.1836. I have quite a bit of info on their parents and ancestors but you may already have this by now. I was really interested to hear that Michael's son, Herbert, emigrated to Australia and would love to know more - when, where, what did he do, and his children/descendants, including yourself. Please let me know if you want any more from me. Best wishes, Barbara

I haven't been searching but I've just stumbled on this thread. I think Dave (early post) may be my second cousin. I think that our two Granddads (Christopher and William) did some growing up around Edmonton Green, not far from London area, for a while. Don't recall where birthplace was.
Their Dad, John died during First World War.
From what I understand, "Seabrook" is a derivation of the original name; from "seabrooke" - before that, it may have changed a few times from "Soegbroc" reportedly from Old English "quiet" or "slow" brook.

At this point in time, no one has any idea of who Mary really was; even research in recent years has not come up with further information on her, but it has been revealed that the Seabrook thing came from early reasearch done by someone who mis-interpreted a phrase from a legal document in which Seabrook was mentioned. Unfortunately, when we deal with early English records for our ancestors, we are still all too often at a loss for information that we need, from parish records that have not been found.

I am sure the rest of the family history is correct but most likely the part about Mary being a Seabrook was picked up by the author at the time as "gospel" as it was by so many authors/researchers at the time. But a lot of time has passed since then and more information has come to light that made genealogists begin to question this and thus most of us seasoned researchers now say she was not Mary Seabrook. I do not use it for her surname, considering information I have found since posting the query.

There is no date, or author listed. Most of the book has hand written information on the photos and history of each branch of the family, but the most extensive is from Ira moving to Michigan, what is written in the book is this Facts relating to the creation of the book came from C. Antoinette Shepard, who held the records of our family. She is the daughter of Celia Adelaide, married to James Shephard. Celia Adelaide is the daughter of Lucy Preston who married William Gaylord Curtis. Information was handed down in family bibles, records and deeds. Lucy was the daughter of Luman Preston who is the fifth child of Samuel and Lucy Preston born May 5 1778 in Wallingford, Conn. Samuel born on April 24,1746 is the son of Jehiel and Thankful, Jehiel (3/4/1755)the son of Eliasaph and Deborah Preston. Eliasaph II 1/26/1679 is the son of Eliasaph (married three times) who is the son of William and Mary. I tried to upload photos but was not able, I will scan in another format and send tomorrow.

I have an old family book "Preston" that is so old the pages are no longer connected to the binding. it has many pages hand written, but the section on William and Mary is written.William had three wives. Mary was the daughter of Robert Seabrook. She was the last wife of William. She is the one that presented his will to the court at New Haven on September 7, 1647. She is also the wife that accompanied him on the ship "True Love" he was 44 and she was 34. Six children came with them they arrived in Massachusetts, and settled in New Haven, and signed the fundamental agreement on January 4,1639. I also have a copy of the will.

Hi Julie,

I have just read a (rather old) post of yours on from 2000, about Ellen Seabrook. I believe I am descended from her brother Josiah b. (about) 1849. I’d love to get in contact with you and find out about his family in the UK. I previously had no information about his other family members. He and his wife Mary Voyzey Lintern had 12 children in the Paddington area of Sydney in the period 1870 - 1894!

I look forward to hearing from you !
Thanks
Helen Lewsam (Nee Seabrook)
I have managed to trace my Seabrooks back to Thomas Seabrook in Guildford in the early 1800s.

I would be very interested to share research with you. I am hoping to find where Thomas came from and also to confirm who all his children were. I suspect that other than my ancestor he also had another son William and a daughter Mary.

There were Seabrooks in Surrey south of Guildford in the late 1700s and I suspect that mine are from there rather than being from Hereford where most Seabrooks seem to be from - although that said maybe some time earlier than the late 1700s they moved from Hereford down to Surrey before moving to London.

Look forward to hearing from you

Take care
Debby

Hello,
My Grandfather served on HMAS Sydney 1st July 1913 to 4th July 1916.His name was Ernest Smart. My grandfather had numerous studio portrait photos in postcard format of fellow seamen. Only yesterday my sister and I were going through them and I have brought home one with the signed subscription on the face of the photo ' Sincerely Yours W Seabrook March 11th '16.' There is no hat/hatband showing the name of his ship but he is dressed in an Australian Naval uniform. My grandfather had numerous photos of fellow seamen. Obviously a common practise to swap photos. I will more than willingly send you a scan via email of this photo as it has ben my intention when bringing it home, was to find family who may be interested. Please eel free to email me at cassimaty@gmail.com looking forward to hearing back.
Wendy

Hello Tina, thanks for getting back to me. I have attempted to attached the photo I have. Hope this works. If not I can try again to an email address of yours if you want me to. I have seen that The Australian War Memorial holds in their collections, medals and diaries relating to J.W Seabrook. Did he stay in Australia after the war? Are you related to him? I would be very happy to send you copies of this photo if you would like me to also. It was my intention when going through these photos belonging to my grandfather, to return any individual photos to family. I would love to do this for the Seabrook family. I will be so honoured if you acknowledge the photo coming from my grandfather, Ernest Smart via his family. Ernest's youngest daughter Joan, my sister's and cousins would all be interested to see and if possible to obtain a copy of your completed project. Could you please let us know when it becomes available so we can purchase copies for our families. hope to hear back that you received the photo. (my sister holds a few other photos pertaining to the Emden and if you like I will scan and send them to you also) regards Wendy Cassimaty, Faulconbridge. NSW. Australia

My father is Geoffrey Arnold Seabrook, he has two sisters, Barbara and Jill or Gillian.
Hi Glennys
Thankyou for your reply. I would be most grateful for any information you could give me regarding my great grandfather Michael Seabrook (brother of John if we are talking about the right Michael). Michael was killed near the Great Northern Railway where he was a station inspector in 1882. His wife was Eliza (or Sarah, which was on my grandfathers death certificate)He was born in 1837 Hatfield Hertfordshire. Michael's son Herbert John Seabrook was born in 1877, married Susie Yarrow in 1906 St. Stephens Church Paddington, London and then they immigrated to Australia. My father Ronald Herbert Seabrook was his son.
Are there any links with your side ie John Seabrook?
Regards, Jennifer

I am always interested in any sources of information that I may have not have seen. In looking over what I found since my query (much of which came from NEHGR on the NEHGS web-site), I came to the conclusion that Mary was not a Seabrook but I still have no idea of who the wife of William Preston was. What do you have; what kind of record book do you have and what does it tell us?

"Marie Preston" is listed on the Truelove but no indication that she was ever Marie Seabrook. Everything found for her after he marriage rings true and is proven, but nothing to indicate/prove she was indeed Mary/Marie Seabrook. Research done after I posted my query led me to think this was another case of someone so long ago assuming something from a deed or a will - a Seabrook mentioned but with nothing to indicate he was related to Marie (---) Preston. Unfortunately, even before computers/internet, bad information/mis information was shared and traveled like the plague among researchers and to this day is still used by many no matter what new evidence has come to light. Of course, if someone has finally found proof that Mary was a Seabrook, I am eager to see it.
