John H. Seagraves, Surry County, North Carolina

My gg-grandfather Madison C. Meadows died in Surry County, NC in 1910; his wife Hester Ann Meadows died there in late 1912. Their estate, what there was of it, was administered by a J.H. Seagraves. The only person by that name in that area that I can find is:

In the 1910 Mt. Airy census is the following:
Dwelling/family #282/286:
SEAGRAVES, John H., [3]7, born NC, carpenter
Sarah, wife, 45, born NC
Fred, son, 15, born NC
[Note: "J.H. Segraves" "made his mark" on the estate papers]

In the 1900 Mt. Airy census, dwelling/family #247/251, is this:
Seagraves, John H., May 1876, 22, married 2 years, farmer
Sarah, wife, Apr 1864, 35, married 2 years, 3 children / 3 living
Fredrick, son, Mar 1894, 6

I am trying to determine what the connection was between this Seagraves and the Meadows' - they were not neighbors in the census'; Madison Meadows was from West Virginia and his wife Hester was from Virginia.

Anybody know anything about this Seagraves??

Thank you.
Arley Meadows

Glad to hear from you. We do not have much on the Seagraves family and would love to know more about them. I know that Issac and Polly Seagraves were in Lincoln Co. Tennessee. They are on the 1850 census. Several family members listed with them. I know that Maneriva was born 1/2/1840 there and passed away 1/11/1925 in Sallisaw OK. Also she had a brother Gabriel, brother Alvin, sister Polly. Maneriva married Jessie B Jackson in AR. They lived in Crawford Co AR where most of their children were born. Their children were Jessie Melton, Melissa, Maggie, Ada, Jim, Susan Belle, Lena, and Robert Lee. Robert Lee is our line. I hope this will help some. Do you know who Issac's parents were, and are they English, Scottish, German, or Native American? This is the line most of doing Jackson research are stuck on. Thanks so much. I will look for more information and pass it on to you. Wanda

I believe that Margie (or Margaret) Scegraves/Seegraves/Seagraves is the neice of Vera Seagraves/Weber/Stone and Walter Dempsey Seagraves. Likely the grandaughter of Thomas S. Seegraves and Ada Rowand. I have info on the family.

We are desperately searching for any info on Vera. Her son Joseph (Virgil) Weber is still living at age 92 and his sister Marjorie (Mabel Inez) Weber Gaither Hudson is still alive at age 90 and are looking for info on what happened to their mother Vera after she left him at an orphanage in Albuquerque and left Mabel with a foster family by the name of. Horace and Claudia Gaither of Potter Co, TX.

Vera has been traced to a 1st marriage with Kenneth P. Weber (the children's father) and a second marriage to Benjamin Hatchet Stone in Deming & Central, NM in 1922. She was divorced from Hatchet Stone by 1923 after just 4 months of marriage. She supposidely was near San Diego, CA in 1923.

Deb Slager (no relation) but researching for Joseph Weber and his daughter Kathy Weber Cano of Albuquerque, NM.

Vera Seagraves (aka Vera STONE or WILLIS?) b. 16 Apr 1900 LA

Joseph Weber, age 92 is searching for his mother Vera Seagraves/Weber/Stone/ perhaps Willis. She was born April 16 1900 in Louisiana to Thomas S. Seagraves and Ada Rowand. She had two brothers Walter Dempsey Seagraves b. near Jonesboro, Louisiana and James Robert Seegraves b. 1895 in Clay, Louisiana.

Vera separated from her first husband Kenneth P. WEBER in 1920 in Kansas or New Mexico. Joseph (aka Virgil) age 4 was sent to a boys orphanage in Albuquerque, NM and his younger sister Mabel Inez (aka Marjorie Mabel) was given to a foster family in Potter Co, TX by the name of Horace and Claudia (DOBBS) GAITHER.

** Joseph Weber was reunited with his long lost 90 year old sister just one month ago. Now they really want to know what happened to their mother and whether they have any half siblings still alive.

Vera, by all accounts was going to come back for the kids. She never did. She married a 2nd time to Benjamin Hatchet "Joe" STONE in Deming, NM in Oct 1921 but she left that marriage by February 1922 after 4 months. Hatchet's divorce plea looks for her in San Diego, CA in 1924 as Vera STONE or Billy STONE. She never showed up for court so a "no contest" divorce was given to Hatchet in Central, Grant Co, NM.

On the 1930 Census of Beaumont, Jefferson County, TX I find a Vera WILLIS with a 4 year old son John W. She is listed as a widow and a clerk in a shop. This Vera WILLIS is also listed with a birth state of Louisiana and a fathers state of Alabama which fits our Vera. John Walter WILLIS has a birth record in Jefferson County, TX for 11 July 1925. No father has been established yet but the census record states father born in Minnesota.

Can anyone help Joseph with finding either Vera or John Walter WILLIS?

Vera is the daughter of Thomas & Ida Rowand Seagraves.
In 1900 Thomas & Ada Seegraves are found on the Police Jury Ward 3, Jackson Co, Louisiana with son Dempsey age 9,Robert age 5 and daughter Velha age 1/12.

Vera is found on the 1910 Chaves, NM census with father Thomas S. Seagraves (Seegraves/Seegroves), mother Ada, son James R. Dempsey was not listed but thought to be drafted into Army.

She married Kenneth P. Weber and had two children from that marriage. On the 1920 Kingman, Kansas census she was with husband Kenneth Weber and her father Thomas Seagraves (mis-spelled McGroves but definately Seagraves),son Virgil(aka Joseph)age 4 & daughter Mabel Inez age 2. Mother Ada died 21 Apr 1917 at Wichita Falls, Texas.

Kenneth Weber was avoiding the draft and abandoned the family probably in New Mexico. Virgil was placed in an orphanage at age 4 and renamed Joseph by the nuns. Mabel is later found in Michigan about 1935 when she wrote New Mexico for her ammended birth certificate but she has disappeard from records too. She appears to have been with a foster family according to the afidavit of the foster mother. Joseph Weber is age 90+ and still wants to find his sister or her descendants.

Vera disappears from records after 1920. She may have remarried and moved on with her life without the 1st two children. Some accounts have her married to a George F. TYRA in Deming, NM but the proof that this Vera who also went by the last name Johnson is the same woman is elusive.
Vera Johnson Tyra had a sister named Lou Deniston who lived in Tuscon, AZ at one time in the 1940's or 1950's. A check of Lou Deniston's marriage record if it can be found would solve the surname issue bit we don't know the husband's name. Both women are said to have taught school and graduated college in SW Arkansas to SW Oklahoma.
If you can help with this mystery I need to hear from you.

Deborah Slager (for granddaughter Kathy Weber Cano)

I do not know if I have the right Dempsey Seagraves. The family I am looking for is Thomas Seagraves originally of Louisiana, Married Ida Rowand (b, Texas). Ida died about 1917 in Wichita Falls, Texas and was buried in Louisiana. Thomas was found on the 1920 Kingman, Kansas census with daughter Vera Seagraves Weber, wife of Kenneth P. Weber. Thomas had four living children that I have found. Dempsey who appears to have gone to California, Vera (Mrs. Kenneth Weber), daughter Velha, and son James. Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated especially info on Velha or any other daughters.

Ada ROWAND
Eliza M. b. abt 1858 AL
Ella J. b. abt 1861 AL (dau of Amanda?)
Lila "Lela" b. abt 1864 AL (dau of Amanda?)
Married 2nd to Amanda ?? maiden name unknown
John H. b. abt 1868 AL
William P. b. abt 1870 AL
Ollie b. abt 1872 AL
Sallie b. abt 1874
Amanda ?? I believe that James Robinson was the brother of Henry's first wife Sarah as he (James) is shown in Henry's household on the 1860 Chambers, AL census.

I have info to share on the descendants of Henry's 1st child Thomas S. Seagraves who moved to New Mexico. Thomas had only 3 living children - William Dempsey b. Apr 1890 married Mary NOE, James Robert b. Nov 1894 married Rosala ??, and Vera H. F. b. April 1898-1901 married 1st Kenneth P. WEBER, divorced? Disappeared after 1920. Abandoned children.

Vera H.F. Seagraves, daughter of Thomas and Ida Rowand Seagraves, b. 1901 in Louisiana. Lived in Hagerman, Chaves Co, MN in 1910 with parents and brothers, Dempsey & Robert. Her son, Virgil (aka Joseph) Weber is looking for info on both her and his sister Mabel Inez Weber.
Vera married Kenneth P. Weber and is found on the Kingman, Kingman Kansas census of 1920. Shoetly after that census Vera left her son Virgil (aka Joseph) at the St. Joseph orphanage in Albuquerque, NM telling the nuns that she would return for him. She never did. He ran away from the orphanage at age 12 and lived near Albuquerque most of his life. His father Kenneth P. Weber (born TUTTLE), son of Mary (maiden name unknown)Tuttle WEBER,was running from the WWI draft when the family split up in 1920.

Joseph found his father and was reunited in the 1950's. His little sister Mabel was born July 7, 1918 at Artesia, NM and apparently was placed in foster care sometime after 1920. She wrote for her birth certificate in 1942 and again in 1971 with an affidavit from her foster mother, Mrs. H. L. GAITHER ammending the certificate to read Marjory Mabel WEBBER. The certificate was mailed to 822 Ship Street, St Joseph, Michigan. The house was reported town down when family members tried to find Marjory Mabel in St Joseph, MI.

Joseph is still living as of August 2007 and wants to find his little sister and find out what happened to his mother.
Posted for Kathy Weber Cano,Albuquerque, NM.grandaughter of Joseph Weber.
Clemson Seagraves and Wife Sarah

To those of us who descend from this couple, I want to challenge you all to help me clarify, fix, or further solidify the maiden name of Clemson's wife Sarah.

I would like to present the following case, as to why I have taken the name McCune/McClune from her name, as I do not believe it to be her maiden name.

On the 1850 census from subdivision 45, Jackson, GA, Clemson 30 is listed with Sarah 30, their children: Nancy A.M. 5, Burgis 3, and James 8/12.

In the same household is Mathilda McCune 39 years old, with a child Sarah McCune, 5 years old.

I would like to say, Sarah wife of Clem, wasn't likely to be a McCune. Mathilda is obviously the mother of Sarah McCune, age 5. However, the name McCune would have to be that of her husband, not that of her parentage.

Later, Mathilda 60, is in the census 1870 Clarke County, Ward 1, Athens with Sarah 25 and a child Eugenia 3.

I have yet to find a marriage record for Clem and Sarah anywhere in Georgia. He was born in NC, but was the last of his family born there, as they moved then to Madison County GA. Sarah lists no all census records as being born in GA, and I find it unlikely they were married out of the state.

So, if there is any other proof to dispute this, or to support mine? Please post. I would like to correct this years old mistake if I can persuade other researchers. SMILES!

Carey Seagraves Werlein
