Hi Maisie 42:
I spoke to Maureen's sister, Brenda, earlier today. She had spoken to Maureen, who would love to re-establish contact with you. The whole family did indeed live at Bowmanston. Kindly send me an email at fitzroett@yahoo.ca so that I can forward it to Maureen. She will then contact you.

Glad I can be of help. Eileen Forde is a my late Mum's first cousin, on her father's side. My grandmother was a Seale who married a Seale -- apparently no family. So long for now,
Fitz Roett.

Hi there:

I am quite sure I know the person you are seeking!!! My mother was her aunt. Do you remember the plantation where she lived? Please let me know. What were the names of her brother and sister?

Please reply, so I can tell her. I note your post is over one year old so hope you still check periodically.

Thank you

Hi, Cousin! =]) This is Beth aka "Shorty". You've _got_ to be Ailie!! Because I've been in touch frequently with Kirstie in the past couple of years, and she knows I've been doing the Seale family tree -- she probably never thought to mention it, haha. Your nephew Sam even came and visited with me a year ago when he and Joel were on their cross-Canada journey! So happy to be in touch with you now as well!!!!!

My Mum, your Aunt Marg, just turned 94 at the beginning of October. If you were to call her, she'd be truly surprised and absolutely delighted! She's keeping well, still living on her own in an apartment in the west end of Hamilton, and actually still driving as well! She plays bridge once a week or so, does the newspaper crossword daily, and reads reads reads. So her thinking processes and long-term memory are great, although of course the short-term/yesterday stuff sometimes eludes her a bit, just like Kirstie tells me things do for Auntie Mary!

My apologies for all the exclamation marks =]). It's just that I'm so amazed and excited to receive your message, especially in reply to my posting about Great-Uncle Howell Seale. The facts you've mentioned, other than the Murray names, I don't believe I had on file, so thank you for them.

What I'd really like to do is get in touch with any of that branch of the family who might still be around, somewhere in the world. Mum has no idea what became of them, nor do any of the other Seale cousins in Barbados or the US with whom I've been in contact over the past 4 years. Although I haven't asked our cousin Pat W. in England yet . . . I'll have to get on that sometime soon.

Anyway, it's wonderful that we've finally made contact, and I'd love to correspond directly with you, if you're interested. My email is SealeCousins-Beth@yahoo.ca. If you email to me there, I'll send you the link and password to my TribalPages family tree website for our Barbados heritage (still a work in progress), which you might find interesting. =])

By the way, I have both a daughter and a son, both of whom are currently living out in BC, in Kelowna and North Van respectively (altho my son is moving to somewhere in the interior at the end of Oct, he doesn't know where yet).

I hope to hear from you again, anytime soon. This cousin-finding is great fun!! All the best, TTFN . . . . =]) Beth

Hello
My mother is Mary Joyce Wilkinson (daughter of Marie Louise Seale who married Ellis Horatio Wilkinson) Her Aunt Florence Seale married a cousin Dalby Seale and had 2 children, Joyce & Margaret. Margaret married and has 1 daughter - Beth(nicknamed Shorty). Beth is married I believe has 1 daughter. My mother says Howell & Susannah's daughter Mildred who married Walter Murray did have 1 duaghter named Jill and she visited with my parents in Edmonton when I was a child. I will be contacting Aunt Margy shortly (Beths mom) as she apparently has the most info on family history. For some more info check the Frew family as I am currently working on it.
From the book "Texas Riverman" by William Seale, p. 106: "Besides being overseer (for Lewis Seale), Uncle Dick was a preacher and established a congregation of slaves one month after the Seales' arrival in Jasper County. Uncle Dick claimed that while beside his mother in a slave caravan, years before being sold to the Seales, he had seen George Washington riding down a Virginia street...In the eyes of his master and the community he could do no wrong....Lewis and Joshua Seale gave Uncle Dick money to build a church house of his own (in the Indian Creek community). In 1853 the church was finished and Uncle Dick called it Dixie Baptist Church".
Thanks for your post, Beth. I have researched this family for many years, but I have never come across any record that lists any of the sons of Charles Seale & Lydia Muse with two given names, including their son Thomas Seale (1759-1825). I've seen many tax records and land deeds for him, none of which show him with a middle name or initial. Do you know of some source that shows "Charles" was his middle name?

Thanks again,

Tim

One more thing....

The Dixie Baptist Church is still located next to the Indian Creek Cemetery. You might write them to see if they have any written records on Richard/Dick Seale.
If my memory serves me correctly, there were many Seale markers within the cemetery. The cemetery is predominantly a black cemetery. Joshua Seale, his wife and son Lewis Seale are also buried in the Cemetery.

Lisa

Re: Richard "Dick" Seale Jasper County Texas

A marker next to Joshua Seale's grave in the Indian Creek Cemetery, Jasper County, Texas, is inscribed:

"To the memory of Rev. Richard Seale and his wife Phyllis, b. abt. 1810 d. abt 1890. "Uncle Dick & Aunt Phyllis" came to Texas with the Seale's and founded Dixie Church about 1/2 mile south of the cemetery. They remained with the Seale's and did church work as long as they lived."

From JOURNAL OF MISSISSIPPI HISTORY, v. 27, pub. 1965, an article entitled "Minutes of Antioch Baptist Church.":

" In Feb. 1843, Joshua and Eleanor Seale were received by letter from a Baptist Church at Mars Hill, Jasper Co.,MS. In September of that same year, the church received Dick, black servant of Joshua, into the fellowship."

The 1850 slave census of Union Parish, Louisiana shows the following slaves of Joshua Seale:

1 Male age 45, 1 Female age 35, 1 Female age 2
(I would believe this to be Richard and perhaps Phyllis and their child)

Subsequent census records, I "think" in Jasper County, Texas, included Richard Seale. These records show Richard/Dick as being born after 1800. If this is true, there is no way Dick could have encountered President George Washington. President Washington died in 1799. Yes, I have read the stories as well but the time table doesn't add up as to this being a factual occurance.

Let me know if I can assist you any further. Joshua Seale was my direct ancestor.

Lisa

I would copy it and email it to you but it is light and I don't think it will copy.

What I have is a reciept for when Joshua (I hate to use bought or purchased but cant' think of a better word right now) purchased Uncle Dick. I will paraphrase the document and not include the legalise.

On January 23, 1835 Joshua purchased Uncle Dick about 22 or 23 years old for $850.00 from John L. Knox in Hinds County Mississippi.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for the information. That is helpful. I've already started researching John L. Knox to see if I can discover anything else. I've traced him to Virginia and I've read that Richard Seale was born in Virginia.

I can find John L. Knox on the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Monroe Virginia Censuses. It's difficult to research during that time frame though because only the head of household is listed.

There was a fire at some point and the church was rebuilt. I don't remember where I read this, but I think the courthouse in Jasper Texas has a list of the marriages performed by Dick Seale. I don't know if I will be able to find any information on his mother. I know it will be difficult, but I might check some Mississippi documents.

On my "radar", I have a Thomas Charles Seale, 1759-1825, born and died in the USA. He's not part of _my_ family tree, but of a distantly related tree which has been reasonably well-researched and documented by others whose data entries can be found on Rootsweb.com.

I don't recall whether any of those researchers had recorded a burial location for this individual, but in that era the family was mostly in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. Try searching on Rootsweb for him, with father Charles Seale and a son Moses Seale.

If this is of any help, I might be able to put you in touch with a genealogically-interested descendent of Thomas Charles Seale, one who currently lives in Louisiana.

Happy sleuthing!
=]) Beth

Hi, Janet. I'd love to help, and a few names (your great-grandmother's?) and perhaps a date or two if you know them, would help determine whether my Seale family has anything to do with yours. Many Barbadians, including a goodly number of the people in my family tree, emigrated to North America (both the U.S. and Canada, where I am) in the 1800s, because of trade and -- what else? -- the economy of the times, so a connection between us is entirely possible.

Last summer, I set up a members-only-access website at TribalPages.com, with all my Seale and Haynes family info. If any of your ancestor names match with mine, I'll send you the link and password, so you can look through it for yourself. But I'd appreciate it if you'd provide a few more details first, please, and I'll see what I can do.

TTFN,
Beth
