This is fabulous! I have the family bible that lists an infant that died 11 Dec 1845. Now I know where the child is buried - and also have an idea where the family was living at the time. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! If there is anything I can do to reciprocate, please do not hesitate to let me know. Kind Regards,
Mary

I am descended from Harry H. Searl's oldest brother, James Clinton, born 1871 and died 1955. James Clinton was married twice.

As you already known, Harry H.'s parents were William Gershom and Mena (Cox) Searl.

William Gershom was the second son of James Clinton Searl (1823-1900) and his first wife, Martha Jane Obdyke (1820/23-1866). The other children were: Francis H (1846-1851); Francis C (1852-1875); and Harry (1860-1860).

James Clinton Searl married a second time to Amelia E. Leininger (1845-?) during 1867. His parents were Francis Searl (1795-1856) and Margaret Price (?-1862), who were married 1822 in Philadelphia.

Francis was the ancestor who emigrated from England to Philadelphia. He arrived in the city on August 30, 1808 aboard the Union. We have photocpied the ship's manifest, where he is listed simply as "F. Searle." Francis lived with the James Searl family in the city. They were probably related in some way through family in Devon County, England, specifically the Stoke Damerel parish (near Plymouth). James Searl may have been his Francis' uncle, but there is no evidence to support that conclusion.

Francis was the second of eight children christened in Stoke Damerel, Devon County to Zechariah (1769-?) and Elizabeth (Febus)(1769-?) Searle. Notice that the English family used the final "e" on the surname.

Zechariah had moved to Stoke Damerel from the ancestral home in Egloskerry parish, near Launceston. His father was Joseph Searle (1744-1821) and mother Charity Kenner (1745-?). Joseph was the sixth of eleven children.

Joseph's parents were Zechariah (1713-1768) and Catherine Pike (1712-1790). I have dubbed this Zechariah as the "Egloskerry Patriarch." He and Catherine were married in Egloskerry on September 4, 1733. The Egloskerry Patriarch's name was used repeatedly for generations, although slight varations in the spelling of the forename occurred.

There are no records of the Egloskerry Patriarch's parents. It is unlikely he was born in that parish since his name does not appear in the christening register that goes back quite a ways. He was probably one of several boys born to a family that lived near Egloskerry, but this is speculation on my part. When you get back to the 17th century, the trail fades.

If you would like more detailed dates for any of these folks, please let me know. I may be able to email you the family tree (four sheets). They have been digitized.

Hope this has been helpful.

I am a member of this family (actually a second cousin to Patricia Searl who responded to your post in August of 2005) and have researched my ancestors back to the early 1700s in Cornwall County, England. Specifically, the family lived in the tiny parish of Egloskerry, a few miles west of Launceston, and had a presence there for close to 200 years! Some of the family lived in the nearby parish of Stoke Climsland and a few others moved to New Zealand.

The members of the family from England spelled the surname with a final "e" (Searle), consistent with the formal and older usage. The "e" was dropped by a portion of the family in the United States as a result of a second marriage. If you are still looking for more information please let me know.

Laura,
Don't know if you've found this already, but George's parents were John Searl b. 17 Aug 1795 Tioga, Chemung Co. NY and Elizabeth Merrill b. 23 Feb 1801 in PA. They married 5 Aug 1830 in Greene Co. OH. John Searl was one of five brothers to settle Searl's Ridge, Selby Twp. Bureau Co. IL in the mid-1830s. John died 31 Dec 1858 in Bureau County, IL and his wife Elizabeth (Merrill) Searl died 25 April 1883 in Bureau County, IL. Both are buried in Searl's Ridge Cemetery. I have quite a bit on this family. George A. served in the Civil War, and his brothers and sisters were Harriet, Eliza, John, Addison Newton and Albert.

I'm trying to figure out if Rebecca Neely was the daughter of the William D. Neely and Henrieta Searl who married 17 June 1834 in Greene County, OH. That would make John and Rebecca Neely first cousins, but believe me, that's not a first for this family.

dorrie

Hi there,
I am at a dead end with James and Lucinda (Traub) Searle(s) (name appears both ways in records - spellings include Serl, Serls, Sorril, among others.) I also believe that James may be James W. Searle (the "W" may be for "Wallace" - although that is speculation based on the fact that they named a son Wallace)

From the family bible, I know James and Lucinda were married in Lehighton, Pennsylvania in June of 1839. They had several children including my great grandfather John Nelson Searle (m. Elizabeth Miller). Lucinda died in Dubois, Pennsylvania around 1901.

There is also a family story that Lucinda Traub was a Native American - or of Native American descent. However, I can find no record of any Traubs, except for one George Traub around 1810. Further, I am at a complete dead end with James Searle.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Mary
Jane, I believe this is the group of Sarles that I am trying to gather information on. Ansel Sarles shows up in Floyd county first and buys land in Clark county in 1820. His wife is Margaret, children are Isaac, Lydia, Elizabeth Louisa all born in NY around 1800 and Catherine b. in Indiana 1821 Is anyone else researching this family? James appears often as a family name. They are buried in the Hendrix-Sarles cemetery in Silver Creek

I don't have too much information yet, right now I'm working off a chart, but I can supply some more names and dates.

I'm new to this, so I will find a much better way to supply you with an electronic version of my charts, but for now, and in case anyone on the list has connections to any of the names provided:

William Gersham Searl (1850-1922)
son of James Clinton Searl (1820-1875) Philadelphia, PA and Martha J. Obdyke (1820-1866)

James Clinton Searl, son of Francis Searl (1794-1856) Philadelphia PA and Margaret Price (1789-1862)

Francis Searl son of John Searle (1770-1825) Bucks County, PA (?) and Catherine Searle (1775?- ?)

Martha J Obdyke, daughter of Gersham Obdyke dates unknown

Margaret Price, daughter of Catherine --- (1763-1849) and --- Price (1760-?)

Menau Cox (1866-1925) [I also have her listed on another chart as Amelia Elizabeth Cox] daughter of Charles P. Cox and Mary A. Kinsella (unknown dates, but Ireland appears under her name)

I don't have the same sons listed for William Searl and Menau Cox, but I do have James Clinton Searl (1871-1955) Philadelphia PA, Married in 1891 and Divorced in 1907 to Ida Estelle French (1875-1941)

Their son is my great grandfather: Clinton Mena Searl (b. Oct 19, 1892 in Philadelphia, PA. Died Oct 15, 1973 in Paulsboro, NJ. Married Oct 14, 1914 in Philadelphia, PA. to Rose Elenor Nestor (born August 11, 1893 in Philadelphia PA, died Oct -- 1973 in Clarksboro, NJ.

Rose Elenor Nestor, daughter of Edward Alyisious Nestor and Ann Kearny (dates unknown)

Children of Rose Nestor and Clinton Searl: Clinton, Robert Howard, (my grandfather) Eleanor, Gordon, Donald, Paul and Mary Searl. (Much more information about these, including emails, if needed.)

I hope this is clear, as I said I will work on compiling an electronic chart, but for now, hopefully this can help you a bit.

My goodness you are the first person to ever reply. I know next to nothing about him. What I do have comes from information that my mother gave a social worker shortly before my birth and her death. In 1942 (Oct) he would have been about 29 years of age. Five feet ten inches tall, blond hair, blue eyes and "good natured", and he may have enjoyed dancing. A high school graduate with one year of college. His parents may have been divorced. He was probably in the military and it was believed that he was married. My mother had family in Glendale, CA, so I am assuming that he was in Southern California somewhere. I doubt that he was aware that I existed. I would love to have historical information on where the family originated. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I apologize that I could not offer any real information to you. Linda Yarbrough

I am looking for an Honor Searl/e/s. She is found on the 1850 R. I. census in Warwick. After that, it appears her husband died and she is not found on the 1860 census. Any info on her would be appreciated. Her maiden name could have been Tourgee, Targer, Targe, etc.

Thank you.

Arlene

Ambrose SEARL obit

MR. AMBROSE SEARL

Mr. Ambrose Searl, whose demise was briefly mentioned in last week’s issue, died very suddenly and without warning at his home on Monday afternoon, Feb. 9th, and had he lived until the following Saturday, the 15th, he would have been seventy-nine years of age. He had been in poor health for several months but was again able to be up and about, and that same forenoon he had been up town, visiting with various friends and acquaintances and making preparations to celebrate his birthday with a dinner for his G. A. R. comrades and the news of his sudden death was a great shock to the entire community.

Deceased was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 15, 1846, coming west when still a young man. He enlisted in the Civil Was and was a private in Co. E., 17th regiment of Ohio Infantry, being enrolled the 18th day of August, 1864, and was honorably discharged, June 5th, 1865.

Soon after coming here, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline A. Victory, a daughter of Jefferson Victory, to which union were born two children, Lenna, now Mrs. Strutz of Superior and Eugene A. Searl of this city.

Mr. Searl was a man of sterling qualities as a man of loyalty to home and family, a neighbor and friend to everyone. He was a member of the John E. Perkins Post No. 98, G. A. R. and a member of the Soldiers’ Relief Commission and always took an active part in all local affairs of a patriotic nature.

Mr. Searl lived a life of every day christianity as a man of good deeds wherever he could minister them to others. Besides the sorrowing widow and two children who are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father, there is one grandson, John W. Foley and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral services were held from the home on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, with interment in the Augusta cemetery, the Rev. J. T. Kneen of the M. E. church officiating.

Augusta Eagle-Times (Augusta, WI), 19 Feb 1925

Re: Amy SEARL b. 1841 md Henry William BLITON 1860

I am a descendent of Amy Searl and Henry Bliton. But do not know anything about them. All that I do have is Henry William, was born on 6/20/1840 and died on2/25/1919. Henry William Bliton married Amy Searl (B: 12/12/1841-D:11/21/1930). Their son Thomas Bliton (1880-1970) married Ada Bolles (1878-1955). Thomas and Ada (Bolles) Bliton lived in Yorkshire/Arcade NY area. Thomas and Ada are my g-g-grandparents. Any help filling in the gaps, siblings, etc... appreciated

Troy E. SEARL of So. Calif. ca 1940-1950

I've never heard of Lowell Searl before, but my father (Troy E. Searl) moved to Southern California back in the 1940s-1950s with his mother and father and siblings. Try looking up Troy W. Searl (DOB: June 10th, 1919/DOD: Oct. 15th, 1991) to see if he was related to Lowell at all? If you need any more info, what little I have, feel free to ask.
